External, prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) straps can be used to enhance the shear strength of existing reinforced concrete beams. In order to effectively design a strengthening system, a rational predictive theory is required. The current work investigates the ability of the modified compression field theory (MCFT) to predict the behavior of rectangular strap strengthened beams where the discrete CFRP strap forces are approximated as a uniform vertical stress. An unstrengthened control beam and two strengthened beams were tested to verify the predictions. The experimental results suggest that the MCFT could predict the general response of a strengthened beam with a uniform strap spacing < 0.9d. However, whereas the strengthened beams failed in shear, the MCFT predicted flexural failures. It is proposed that a different compression softening model or the inclusion of a crack width limit is required to reflect the onset of shear failures in the strengthened beams.

The influence of particle shape on the stress-strain response of fine silica sand is investigated experimentally. Two sands from the same source and with the same particle size distribution were examined using Fourier descriptor analysis for particle shape. Their grains were, on average, found to have similar angularity but different elongation. During triaxial stress path testing, the stress-strain behavior of the sands for both loading and creep stages were found to be influenced by particle elongation. In particular, the behavior of the sand with less elongated grains was more like that of rounded glass beads during creep. The results highlight the role of particle shape in stress transmission in granular packings and suggest that shape should be taken more rigorously into consideration in characterizing geomaterials. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group.

The response of surface structures to tunnelling induced ground movements is an area of great importance for any urban tunnelling project. Testing described in this paper aims to investigate soil structure interaction effects by observing the response of aluminium beams of varying stiffness to tunnelling, using the 8 m diameter beam centrifuge at Cambridge University. Soil and structure displacements are extensively monitored through a photo imaging technique which enables a detailed analysis of the interaction behaviour. Results to date indicate that the relative structure-soil stiffness is the governing factor in determining how a structure will respond to tunnelling. This parameter is highly dependent on both the structure and soil stiffness. It is also shown that contrary to common assumptions in the literature, negligible axial strains are transferred into the structure. This paper outlines the results of the research to date. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Are there any benefits in allowing orders and products to be able to manage their own progress through a supply chain? The notion of associating (and even embedding) information management and reasoning capabilities with a physical product has been discussed for over ten years now. This talk will review the notions of product intelligence and examine the rationales for these models and the practicality of their implementation. Both theoretical and practical issues associated with product intelligence will be examined referencing a number of trial deployments in manufacturing, logistics and aerospace equipment servicing. © 2012 IFAC.

A numerical model is established and validated to study the behavior of porous seabed under solitary wave propagation. Using Biot's poro-elastic theory, the problem is formulated as a two dimensional plane strain problem, and it is modelled using the Finite Element Method. The responses due to the solitary wave are compared with those of linear waves of the same height. It is found that regardless of the wave period, stresses due to solitary waves are generally larger. This indicates a higher potential for shear failure at the seabed under solitary waves. Implications on liquefaction need further investigation. This paper explores the influence of the piled foundation on the building response to excavation-induced deformations. The influence of the type of foundation, the position of positive and negative skin friction zones, and the flexibility of the piles is evaluated with respect to both horizontal and vertical soil deformations. Case histories from the Netherlands are included from Amsterdam (North South Line) and Rotterdam (a building adjacent to the Willemspoortunnel). Most of the buildings are founded on timber piles ranging in length from 12-17 m. Conclusions are drawn about the interaction between the piled building and the soil deformation. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.
