Development and characterization of biopolymers was done in AIJU’s laboratories. AIJU, Technological Institute for children’s products and leisure is based in Spain. The work has the aim to study qualities and characteristics of bioplastics’ blends, in order to design where improvements can be executed. Biopolymers represent a sector with great development possibilities because they combine high technical potential and eco-sustainability. Nowadays, plastic pollution has becoming increasingly concerning, particularly in terms of management of waste. Bioplastics provide an alternative for the disposal of products, reducing the volume of waste and enhancing the end of life recovery. Despite the growing interest in biopolymers there is some gaps that need be filled. The main objective on this work, is the optimization of bioplastics mechanical properties, to find suitable substitutes, as similar as possible to conventional plastics. Firstly, investigations on processability of biomaterials has been deepen since the project deals with toy manufacturing’s sector. Thus, starting from laboratory scale the work aspires to expand industrially. By working with traditional machines, it was notable that, with some limited modifications, the equipment can perform the same functions. Therefore, operational processes do not emerge as an obstacle to the production chain. Secondly, after processing bio-blends, they are characterized by thermal tests (melt flow index, differential scanning calorimetry-DSC, thermogravimetry-TGA) and mechanical tests (traction and flexural tests, Charpy impact, SHORE D hardness and density). While the compatibility does not show relevant results, mechanical improvements has been visualized with addition of more ductile materials. The study was developed by inclusion of sustainable additive VINNEX® to blends. The thesis has highlighted that integration of more flexible materials provides elasticity without compromising bioplastics’ properties.

In this work, a stable MPC that maximizes the domain of attraction of the closed-loop system is proposed. The proposed approach is suitable to real applications in the sense that it accounts for the case of output tracking, it is offset free if the output target is reachable and minimizes the offset if some of the constraints are active at steady state. The new approach is based on the definition of a Minkowski functional related to the input and terminal constraints of the stable infinite horizon MPC. It is also shown that the domain of attraction is defined by the system model and the constraints, and it does not depend on the controller tuning parameters. Extracellular polysaccharides from three Erythroclonium spp. were shown, by a combination of compositional, linkage analyses, and Fourier transform infrared and C-13-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, to be highly substituted carrageenans with at least five types of repeating disaccharide units. These are the carrabiose 2,4'-disulfate of iota-carrageenan, carrabiose 2-sulfate of alpha-carrageenan, the 6'-O-methylated counterparts of each of these repeating units, and 4',6'-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)carrabiose 2-sulfate. The polysaccharides also contain significant amounts of unsubstituted, 4-linked galactopyranose and small amounts of 4-linked 3-O-methylgalactopyranose and terminal glycosyl residues. The carrageenan preparations of the three species are similar, differing only in the proportions of some components. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Galactoglucomannan (GGM) from cultures of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia has Man:Glc:Gal:Ara:Xyl in 1.0:1.1:1.0:0.1:0.04 ratio. Linkage analysis contained 4- and 4,6-Manp, 4-Glcp, terminal Galp and 2-Galp, small amounts and terminal Arap and terminal Xylp, and similar to 0.03 mol acetyl per mol of glucosyl residue. Treatment with alpha- and beta-D-galactosidases showed that the majority of the side-chains were either single Galp-alpha-(1 --> residues or the disaccharide Galp-beta-(1 --> 2)-Galp-alpha-(1 --> linked to O-6 of the 4-Manp residues of the glucomannan backbone. Analysis of the oligosaccharides generated by endo-(1 --> 4)-beta-mannanase digestion confirmed that the GGM comprises a backbone of predominantly alternating --> 4)-D-Manp-beta-(1 --> and --> Lt)-D-Glcp-beta-(1 --> branched at O-6 of 65% of the 4-Manp residues. The major oligosaccharide identified was D-Glcp-beta-(1 --> 4)-[D-Galp-beta-(1 --> 2)-D-Galp-alpha-(1 --> 6)]-D-Manp-beta-(1 --> 4)-D-Glcp-beta-(I --> 4)-[D-Galp-alpha-(1 --> 6)]-D-Manp-beta-(1 --> (27%), and most of the other oligosaccharides produced in significant quantities were based on this structure. Objective: Experimental study idealized to investigate the mechanical properties of deep flexor tendons of rabbits that underwent the tenotomy followed by tenorrhaphy and early application of therapeutic ultrasound with different intensities, in comparison to tendons submitted to tenorrhaphy only. Material and Method: Forty-four rabbits were divided into four experimental groups according to the ultrasound application. They were all submitted to a section of deep flexor tendon in zone 2 and immobilized with an orthosis maintained throughout the experiment. Group A received ultrasonic treatment with an intensity of 1.4 W/cm(2), group B with 0.6 W/cm(2), both in continuous mode, group C with 0.6 W/cm(2) SATA, in pulsated mode at 50% and group D did not receive any ultrasonic treatment. The ultrasonic frequency employed was 1 MHz. After euthanasia, the tendons were dissected and submitted to the mechanical test of traction and qualitative histological analysis. The evaluated mechanical properties were: maximum force, deformation in maximum force and stiffness. Results: There were no statistically significant differences among the experimental groups. Conclusion: Therapeutic ultrasound did not improve the mechanical properties of the flexor tendons after repair.

Background: One of the frequent questions in obstetric practice is to determine placental vascular changes that may account for abnormal Doppler flow velocity alterations in maternal uterine vessels from women and fetuses without pregnancy pathology. Methods: A retrospective morphometric study was realized using 27 placentas from patients submitted for Doppler flow velocity exam during pregnancy. The placentas were morphologically examined using hematoxylin-eosin staining. Measurements of villi were made with the use of a video camera coupled to a common light microscope and a computer with automatic image analyzing software. Results: Of the 27 placentas, 13 (48%) were of patients showing unaltered Doppler and 14 (52%) showing altered Doppler. The number of stem villi vessels was significantly larger in the placentas of patients with Doppler exam alterations (P = 0.003). This group also presented greater stem villi vessel thickness, although without significant difference. The number of intermediary and terminal villi vessels was greater in the placentas of patients with altered Doppler exams (P < 0.001), and a greater terminal villi area was observed in these cases (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The morphological proof that uterine artery Doppler flow velocity exam alterations are associated with placental vascular alterations demonstrates the importance of this exam during prenatal care, even in the absence of maternal-fetal alterations.

A/J and 129P3/J mouse strains have different susceptibilities to dental fluorosis, due to their genetic backgrounds. This study tested whether these differences are due to variations in water intake and/or F metabolism. A/J (susceptible to dental fluorosis) and 129P3/J mice (resistant) received drinking water containing 0, 10, or 50 ppm F. Weekly F intake, excretion and retention, and terminal plasma and femur F levels were determined. Dental fluorosis was evaluated clinically and by quantitative fluorescence (QF). Data were tested by two-way ANOVA. Although F intakes by the strains were similar, excretion by A/J mice was significantly higher due to greater urinary F excretion, which resulted in lower plasma and femur F levels. Compared with 129P3/J mice given 50 ppm F, significantly higher QF scores were recorded for A/J mice. In conclusion, these strains differ with respect to several features of F metabolism, and amelogenesis in the 129P3/J strain seems to be unaffected by high F exposure.

(E)-N-Hexadecyl-4-[2-(4-octadecyloxynaphthyl) ethenyl] quinolinium bromide, which has a wide-bodied chromophore and terminal n-alkyl groups, adopts a U-shape when spread at the air-water interface but a stretched conformation when compressed to ca. 35 mN m(-1). The high-pressure phase has a narrow stability range prior to collapse but may be extended from 40 to 60 mN m(-1) by co-spreading the dye in a 1 : 1 ratio with docosanoic acid. The mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film has a monolayer thickness of 4.6 +/- 0.2 nm which decreases to 2.5 +/- 0.1 nm layer(-1) in the bulk, the reduction arising from an interdigitating layer arrangement, both top and bottom. It is the first example of LB-Lego(R) and, in addition, represents the only fully interdigitating structure with non-centrosymmetrically aligned chromophores. They are tilted 38 degrees from the substrate normal. The second-harmonic intensity increases quadratically with the number of layers, i.e. as I-(N)(2 omega) = (I(1)N2)-N-2 omega, with a second-order susceptibility of chi ((2))(zzz) = 30 pm V-1 at 1064 nm for refractive indices of n(omega) = 1.55 and n(2 omega) = 1.73, d = 2.5 nm layer(-1) and phi = 38 degrees. Angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of these films provide no evidence of the bromide counterion, which suggests that it is replaced by OH 2 or HCO3-, which occur naturally in the aqueous subphase, or C21H43COO- from the co-deposited fatty acid. This probably applies to all cationic dyes deposited by the LB technique.

Areas of the limbic system of adult male Wistar rats were screened for kainic-acid-induced gene expression. Polymerase-chain-reactionbased differential display identified a 147-bp cDNA fragment, which represented an mRNA that was upregulated in the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus in the kainic-acid-treated animals. The sequence was 97.8% homologous to rat 14-3-3 zeta isoform mRNA. Detailed Northern analysis revealed increased mRNA levels in the entorhinal cortex I h after kainic acid exposure and continued elevation 24 h post-injection in both the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus. Western blot analyses confirmed that the protein product of this gene was also present in increased amounts over the same time period. Immunohistochemistry and terminal transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) detected expression of 14-3-3 protein exclusively in the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus, and only in TUNEL-positive neuronal cells. Expression of the tumor suppressor protein, p53 was also induced by kainate injection, and was co-localized with 14-3-3 zeta protein in selected cells only in the affected brain regions. The increase gene expression of 14-3-3 represents a transcription-mediated response associated with region selective neuronal damage induced by kainic acid. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. In-plane deformation of foams was studied experimentally by subjecting bidisperse foams to cycles of traction and compression at a prescribed rate. Each foam contained bubbles of two sizes with given area ratio and one of three initial arrangements: sorted perpendicular to the axis of deformation (iso-strain), sorted parallel to the axis of deformation (iso-stress), or randomly mixed. Image analysis was used to measure the characteristics of the foams, including the number of edges separating small from large bubbles N-sl, the perimeter (surface energy), the distribution of the number of sides of the bubbles, and the topological disorder mu(2)(N). Foams that were initially mixed were found to remain mixed after the deformation. The response of sorted foams, however, depended on the initial geometry, including the area fraction of small bubbles and the total number of bubbles. For a given experiment we found that (i) the perimeter of a sorted foam varied little; (ii) each foam tended towards a mixed state, measured through the saturation of N-sl; and (iii) the topological disorder mu(2)(N) increased up to an "equilibrium" value. The results of different experiments showed that (i) the change in disorder, Delta mu(2)(N), decreased with the area fraction of small bubbles under iso-strain, but was independent of it under iso-stress; and (ii) Delta mu(2)(N) increased with Delta N-sl under iso-strain, but was again independent of it under iso-stress. We offer explanations for these effects in terms of elementary topological processes induced by the deformations that occur at the bubble scale.

Although it is always weak between RFID Tag and Terminal in focus of the security, there are no security skills in RFID Tag. Recently there are a lot of studying in order to protect it, but because it has some physical limitation of RFID, that is it should be low electric power and high speed, it is impossible to protect with the skills. At present, the methods of RFID security are using a security server, a security policy and security. One of them the most famous skill is the security module, then they has an authentication skill and an encryption skill. In this paper, we designed and implemented after modification original SEED into 8 Round and 64 bits for Tag.

Olhando para a necessidade de auxiliar o movimento dos carrinhos de compras nas grandes superfícies, surgiu a ideia de desenvolver um sistema de accionamento flexível, que pudesse ser adaptado a diferentes tipos de carrinhos. O sistema deveria ser também de baixo custo e ter potencial de industrialização. Como em qualquer sistema de accionamento eléctrico foi necessário dimensionar e seleccionar um controlador e um motor, no entanto, dados os requisitos relativos à adaptabilidade do sistema foi necessário um esforço significativo para o desenvolvimento dos componentes mecânicos de tracção e transmissão. Considerando os requisitos de portabilidade foi também desenvolvido um sistema de alimentação a partir de baterias e feito um estudo preliminar relativo ao sistema de carregamento de baterias a ser instalado nos locais de utilização. Após a concepção, foi construído um protótipo que depois foi instalado num carrinho de compras. Os testes realizados demonstraram a viabilidade do sistema, quer pelo auxílio que podem dar aos utilizadores, quer pela flexibilidade e potencial de comercialização.

A crescente necessidade imposta pela gama de aplicações existentes, torna o estudo dos veículos autónomos terrestres um objecto de grande interesse na investigação. A utilização de robots móveis autónomos originou quer um incremento de eficiência e eficácia em inúmeras aplicações como permite a intervenção humana em contextos de elevado risco ou inacessibilidade. Aplicações de monitorização e segurança constituem um foco de utilização deste tipo de sistemas quer pela automatização de procedimentos quer pelos ganhos de eficiência (desde a eficiência de soluções multi-veículo à recolha e detecção de informação). Neste contexto, esta dissertação endereça o problema de concepção, o desenvolvimento e a implementação de um veículo autónomo terrestre, com ênfase na perspectiva de controlo. Este projecto surge pois no âmbito do desenvolvimento de um novo veículo terrestre no Laboratório de Sistemas Autónomos (LSA) do Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP). É efectuado um levantamento de requisitos do sistema tendo por base a caracterização de aplicações de monitorização, transporte e vigilância em cenários exteriores pouco estruturados. Um estado da arte em veículos autónomos terrestres é apresentado bem como conceitos e tecnologias relevantes para o controlo deste tipo de sistemas. O problema de controlo de locomoção é abordado tendo em particular atenção o controlo de motores DC brushless. Apresenta-se o projecto do sistema de controlo do veículo, desde o controlo de tracção e direcção, ao sistema computacional de bordo responsável pelo controlo e supervisão da missão. A solução adoptada para a implementação mecânica da estrutura do veículo consiste numa plataforma de veículo todo terreno (motociclo 4X4) disponível comercialmente. O projecto e implementação do sistema de controlo de direcção para o mesmo é apresentado quer sob o ponto de vista da solução electromecânica, quer pelo subsistema de hardware de controlo embebido e respectivo software. Tendo em vista o controlo de tracção são apresentadas duas soluções. Uma passando pelo estudo e desenvolvimento de um sistema de raiz capaz de controlar motores BLDC de elevada potência, a segunda passando pela utilização de uma solução através de um controlador externo. A gestão energética do sistema é abordada através do projecto e implementação de um sistema de controlo e distribuição de energia específico. A implementação do veículo foi alcançada nas suas vertentes mecânica, de hardware e software, envolvendo a integração dos subsistemas projectados especialmente bem como a implementação do sistema computacional de bordo. São apresentados resultados de validação do controlo de locomoção básico quer em simulação quer descritos os testes e validações efectuados no veículo real. No presente trabalho, são também tiradas algumas conclusões sobre o desenvolvimento do sistema e sua implementação bem como perspectivada a sua evolução futura no contexto de missões coordenadas de múltiplos veículos robóticos.
