A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system based on an interrogating technique by two parallel matched gratings was designed and theoretically discussed. With an interrogation grating playing the role of temperature compensation grating simultaneously, the wavelength drifts induced by temperature and strain were discriminated. Additionally, the expressions of temperature and strain were deduced for our solution, and dual-value problem and cross sensitivity were solved synchronously through data processing. The influence of the FBG's parameters on the dynamic range and precision was discussed. Besides, the change of environment temperature cannot influence the dynamic range of the sensor system through temperature tuning. The system proposed in this paper will be of great significance to accelerate the real engineering applications of FBG sensing techniques. (c) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

A general class of single degree of freedom systems possessing rate-independent hysteresis is defined. The hysteretic behavior in a system belonging to this class is depicted as a sequence of single-valued functions; at any given time, the current function is determined by some set of mathematical rules concerning the entire previous response of the system. Existence and uniqueness of solutions are established and boundedness of solutions is examined.
An asymptotic solution procedure is used to derive an approximation to the response of viscously damped systems with a small hysteretic nonlinearity and trigonometric excitation. Two properties of the hysteresis loops associated with any given system completely determine this approximation to the response: the area enclosed by each loop, and the average of the ascending and descending branches of each loop.
The approximation, supplemented by numerical calculations, is applied to investigate the steady-state response of a system with limited slip. Such features as disconnected response curves and jumps in response exist for a certain range of system parameters for any finite amount of slip.
To further understand the response of this system, solutions of the initial-value problem are examined. The boundedness of solutions is investigated first. Then the relationship between initial conditions and resulting steady-state solution is examined when multiple steady-state solutions exist. Using the approximate analysis and numerical calculations, it is found that significant regions of initial conditions in the initial condition plane lead to the different asymptotically stable steady-state solutions.

A series of new single-step methods and their corresponding algorithms with automatic step size adjustment for model equations of fiber Raman amplifiers are proposed and compared in this paper. On the basis of the Newton-Raphson method, multiple shooting algorithms for the two-point boundary value problems involved in solving Raman amplifier propagation equations are constructed. A verified example shows that, compared with the traditional Runge-Kutta methods, the proposed methods can increase the accuracy by more than two orders of magnitude under the same conditions. The simulations for Raman amplifier propagation equations demonstrate that our methods can increase the computing speed by more than 5 times, extend the step size significantly, and improve the stability in comparison with the Dormand-Prince method. The numerical results show that the combination of the multiple shooting algorithms and the proposed methods has the capacity to rapidly and effectively solve the model equations of multipump Raman amplifiers under various conditions such as co-, counter- and bi-directionally pumped schemes, as well as dual-order pumped schemes.

The magnetoexcitonic optical absorption of a GaAs bulk semiconductor driven by a terahertz (THz) field is investigated numerically. The method of the solution of the initial-value problem, in combination with the perfect matched layer technique, is used to calculate the optical susceptibility, with Coulomb interaction, Landau quantization, and THz fields involved nonperturbatively. It shows that there appear replicas and sidebands of magnetoexciton of different Landau levels, which greatly enrich the magneto-optical spectrum in the presence of a driving THz field. Transverse trace-free (TT) tensors play an important role in the initial conditions of numerical relativity, containing two of the component freedoms. Expressing a TT tensor entirely, by the choice of two scalar potentials, is not a trivial task however. Assuming the added condition of axial symmetry, expressions are given in both spherical and cylindrical coordinates, for TT tensors in flat space. A coordinate relation is then calculated between the scalar potentials of each coordinate system. This is extended to a non-flat space, though only one potential is found. The remaining equations are reduced to form a second order partial differential equation in two of the tensor components. With the axially symmetric flat space tensors, the choice of potentials giving Bowen-York conformal curvatures, are derived. A restriction is found for the potentials which ensure an axially symmetric TT tensor, which is regular at the origin, and conditions on the potentials, which give an axially symmetric TT tensor with a spherically symmetric scalar product, are also derived. A comparison is made of the extrinsic curvatures of the exact Kerr solution and numerical Bowen-York solution for axially symmetric black hole space-times. The Brill wave, believed to act as the difference between the Kerr and Bowen-York space-times, is also studied, with an approximate numerical solution found for a mass-factor, under different amplitudes of the metric.

A Newton–Raphson solution scheme with a stress point algorithm is presented for the implementation of an elastic–viscoplastic soilmodel in a finite element program. Viscoplastic strain rates are calculated using the stress and volumetric states of the soil. Sub-incrementsof time are defined for each iterative calculation of elastic–viscoplastic stress changes so that their sum adds up to the time incrementfor the load step. This carefully defined ‘iterative time’ ensures that the correct amount of viscoplastic straining is accumulated overthe applied load step. The algorithms and assumptions required to implement the solution scheme are provided. Verification of the solutionscheme is achieved by using it to analyze typical boundary value problems.

During 1990's the Wavelet Transform emerged as an important signal processing tool with potential applications in time-frequency analysis and non-stationary signal processing.Wavelets have gained popularity in broad range of disciplines like signal/image compression, medical diagnostics, boundary value problems, geophysical signal processing, statistical signal processing, pattern recognition, underwater acoustics etc.In 1993, G. Evangelista introduced the Pitch- synchronous Wavelet Transform, which is particularly suited for pseudo-periodic signal processing. The work presented in this thesis mainly concentrates on two interrelated topics in signal processing, viz. the Wavelet Transform based signal compression and the computation of Discrete Wavelet Transform. A new compression scheme is described in which the Pitch-Synchronous Wavelet Transform technique is combined with the popular linear Predictive Coding method for pseudo-periodic signal processing. Subsequently,A novel Parallel Multiple Subsequence structure is presented for the efficient computation of Wavelet Transform. Case studies also presented to highlight the potential applications.

In the present paper we use a time delay epsilon > 0 for an energy conserving approximation of the nonlinear term of the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations. We prove that the corresponding initial value problem (N_epsilon)in smoothly bounded domains G \subseteq R^3 is well-posed. Passing to the limit epsilon \rightarrow 0 we show that the sequence of stabilized solutions has an accumulation point such that it solves the Navier-Stokes problem (N_0) in a weak sense (Hopf).

This presentation discusses the role and purpose of testing in the systems/Software Development Life Cycle. We examine the consequences of the 'cost curve' on defect removal and how agile methods can reduce its effects. We concentrate on Black Box Testing and use Equivalence Partitioning and Boundary Value Analysis to construct the smallest number of test cases, test scenarios necessary for a test plan.

We discuss the implementation of a method of solving initial boundary value problems in the case of integrable evolution equations in a time-dependent domain. This method is applied to a dispersive linear evolution equation with spatial derivatives of arbitrary order and to the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, in the domain l(t)
