This final report ‘Development and promotion of IPM strategies for silverleaf whitefly in vegetables’ summarises the research and extension into development and implementation of IPM programs for silverleaf whitefly in vegetables. Chemical and biologicontrol for Silverleaf Whitefly in pumpkin, brassica, bean and sweet potatoes.

Alternaria Fruit Spot: New Directions

This project determined the identity of causal pathogens, epidemiology and disease cycle of Alternaria leaf blotch and fruit spot in Australian apples and provided a management strategy for both diseases for inclusion in the integrated fruit production manual.

Alternative fruit fly management for market access for apples

Difficulty with control of Queensland fruit fly with four cultivars of apples on the Granite Belt, Qld. Warnings that the insecticides dimethoate & fenthion might be removed from the market for apples, had been current for several years. Dimethoate was widely used as a post harvest control measure as well as an in-field treatment. Fenthion also had and still has in-field usage. The project attempted to find a replacement for these control measures.

Traffic tolerance of warm season turfgrasses under Community Sportsfield Conditions

The four-year Horticulture Australia (HAL) project is the first scientific study within Australia to assess simulated and actual wear studies of warm-season turfgrasses suitable for sportfield use. The study has allowed researchers and turf professionals to compare traffic (wear and compaction) tolerance and turf management requirements (e.g. mowing) of the current dominant varieties.

Alternative fruit fly control for market access and to enhance IPM in eggplant

Eggplant was identified as another fruit fly host commodity where recent changes to interstate market access requirements are causing problems for industry. The proposed research aims to develop a systems approach to meet interstate market access requirements.

TU10025 Erosion control - turf research and development facility

The aim of this project is to construct a large-scale erosion control education and demonstration facility at Redland Research Station. This will be done in collaboration with the Australian turf industry (as members of the steering committee) and consultant researcher Dr Rob Loch (project partner). The project will employ a part-time industry development officer (IDO) for Turf Australia to increase engagement with the project by the target audience. The project’s main strategy is to extend the research results from HAL funded project Optimising Turf Use to Minimise Soil Erosion on Construction Sites TU08033 so that the maximum return on investment can be derived for the turf levy payers and HAL from that study.

Cross-industry preparedness for Cotton leaf curl disease

Cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) is a major biosecurity threat to the Australian cotton industry. This proposal seeks cross-industry investment from the cotton (CRDC) and horticulture (HAL) industries to address the threat of exotic whitefly-transmitted viruses. Testing of silverleaf whitefly, the vector of CLCuD, could provide an alternative, cheaper strategy for early warning disease surveillance compared to surveys for disease symptoms. Control of whitefly-transmitted viruses in Australia and overseas will be reviewed to produce an integrated management package for their control in Australia. This will also involve a workshop with key stakeholders and selected overseas participants, to develop a working party to help formulate this package.
