Student poem composed by Jacob Abbot Cummings, 1799 September 16

Handwritten poem composed by Jacob Abbot Cummings when he was an undergraduate at Harvard College. The rhyming poem celebrates morning (as a metaphor for life) and describes the farmer, industrious milk maid, and market man. It begins, “Loud speaks the clarion of approaching day..." The poem is labeled "16 September 1799 Cummings" and is headed with a quote from John Milton's Paradise Lost: "Sweet in the breath of morn, her rising sweet, with song of earliest bird."

Letter from George Richards Minot to Daniel Kilham, 1777 December 1

Three-page handwritten letter from Harvard undergraduate George Richards Minot to his friend and Harvard graduate Daniel Kilham, dated December 1, 1777. The letter describes the discipline inflicted upon Minot and seven of his classmates by the Harvard government following a “Thanksgiving frolic,” and the retributions carried out by the students against a Tutor who recommended harsh measures for the accused students. The Early Faculty minutes for 1777 (UAIII 5.5, Volume 4, pages 75-76) describes the students’ crime as “making riotous & tumultuous noises in the Hall…committed in Presence of a number foreigners, & and on a day appointed by Authority for public Thanksgiving.”

Physik vor Gericht. Die forensische Physik am Institut für Rechtsmedizin der Universität Bern

Die Physik ist als Teil der exakten Wissenschaften objektiv und beschreibt alle in unserer Umwelt vorkommenden Ereignisse und ist deshalb als „neutrale Zeugin“ vor Gericht von zunehmender Bedeutung. Die forensische Physik beschäftigt sich wie die Physik allgemein mit Fragen zu den Gesetzmäßigkeiten der Natur und basiert auf der mathematischen Beschreibung von Ursache und Wirkung. Sie beantwortet u. a. Fragestellungen aus dem Bereich der Justiz, wobei das Augenmerk auf mechanische Einwirkungen auf Strukturen des menschlichen Körpers gerichtet wird. Dabei beschränkt sie sich hauptsächlich auf stumpfe und scharfe Gewalteinwirkung, wobei erstere den Sturz mit einschließt. Geschosse, die bekanntlich auch mechanisch auf den Körper einwirken, werden in der forensischen Ballistik bearbeitet. Die physikalischen Gesetze und das Wissen aus der forensischen Physik werden genutzt, um Tathergänge zu rekonstruieren, Gewalteinwirkungen – auch potenzielle – nach ihrer Gefährlichkeit zu beurteilen und um Zeugenaussagen auf ihre Vereinbarkeit mit den physikalischen Gesetzen zu prüfen.
