The masses of neutron-deficient nuclides near the N=Z line with A=64-80 have been determined using a direct time-of-flight technique which employed a cyclotron as a high-resolution spectrometer. The measured atomic masses for (68)Se and (80)Y were 67.9421(3) u and 79.9344(2) u, respectively. The new values agree with the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation. The result for (68)Se confirms that this nucleus is a waiting point of the rp-process, and that for (80)Y resolves the conflict between earlier measurements. Using the present results and the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation compilation, the empirical interaction between the last proton and the last neutron in N=Z nuclei has been revisited and extended.

We present a broadband (460-980 nm) analysis of the nonlinear absorption processes in bulk ZnO, a large-bandgap material with potential blue-to-UV photonic device applications. Using an optical parametric amplifier we generated tunable 1-kHz repetition rate laser pulses and employed the Z-scan technique to investigate the nonlinear absorption spectrum of ZnO. For excitation wavelengths below 500 nm, we observed reverse saturable absorption due to one-photon excitation of the sample, agreeing with rate-equation modeling. Two-and three-photon absorption were observed from 540 to 980 nm. We also determined the spectral regions exhibiting mixture of nonlinear absorption mechanisms, which were confirmed by photoluminescence measurements. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

In this study, the one- and two-photon absorption spectra of seven azoaromatic compounds (five pseudostilbenes-type and two aminoazobenzenes) were theoretically investigated using the density functional theory combined with the response functions formalism. The equilibrium molecular structure of each compound was obtained at three different levels of theory: Hartree-Fock, density functional theory (DFT), and Moller-Plesset 2. The effect of solvent on the equilibrium structure and the electronic transitions of the compounds were investigated using the polarizable continuum model. For the one-photon absorption, the allowed pi ->pi(*) transition energy showed to be dependent on the molecular structures and the effect of solvent, while the n ->pi(*) and pi ->pi(*)(n) transition energies exhibited only a slight dependence. An inversion between the bands corresponding to the pi ->pi(*) and n ->pi(*) states due to the effect of solvent was observed for the pseudostilbene-type compounds. To characterize the allowed two-photon absorption transitions for azoaromatic compounds, the response functions formalism combined with DFT using the hybrid B3LYP and PBE0 functionals and the long-range corrected CAM-B3LYP functional was employed. The theoretical results support the previous findings based on the three-state model. The model takes into account the ground and two electronic excited states and has already been used to describe and interpret the two-photon absorption spectrum of azoaromatic compounds. The highest energy two-photon allowed transition for the pseudostilbene-type compounds shows to be more effectively affected (similar to 20%) by the torsion of the molecular structure than the lowest allowed transition (similar to 10%). In order to elucidate the effect of the solvent on the two-photon absorption spectra, the lowest allowed two-photon transition (dipolar transition) for each compound was analyzed using a two-state approximation and the polarizable continuum model. The results obtained reveal that the effect of solvent increases drastically the two-photon cross-section of the dipolar transition of the pseudostilbene-type compounds. In general, the features of both one- and two-photon absorption spectra of the azoaromatic compounds are well reproduced by the theoretical calculations.

In this work we report the preparation of a new blue-emitting material based on the templated synthesis of mesoporous silica (MCM-41) using micellar solutions of the newly synthesized monocationic metallosurfactant complex bis[1-benzyl-4-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole](4,4'-diheptadecyl-2,2'- bipyridine)-iridium(III) chloride in hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB). Under ambient conditions, significant increases in excited state lifetime and quantum yield values (up to 45%), were obtained for the solid materials in comparison to the corresponding micellar solutions. Solid state (1)H and (19)F NMR spectroscopies were successfully employed for quantifying the luminophore content in terms of Ir-surfactant to CTAB and Ir-surfactant to silica ratios.

We present an extensive study of the oxyborate material Co(5)Ti(O(2)BO(3))(2) using x-ray, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements. This material belongs to a family of oxyborates known as ludwigites which presents low-dimensional subunits in the form of three leg ladders in its structure. Differently from previously investigated ludwigites the present material does not show long-range magnetic order although it goes into a spin-glass state at low temperatures. The different techniques employed in this paper allow for a characterization of the structure, the nature of the low-energy excitations and the magnetic anisotropy of this system. Its unique magnetic behavior is discussed and compared with those of other magnetic ludwigites.

First-principles density-functional theory studies have reported open structures based on the formation of double simple-cubic (DSC) arrangements for Ru(13), Rh(13), Os(13), and Ir(13), which can be considered an unexpected result as those elements crystallize in compact bulk structures such as the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed lattices. In this work, we investigated with the projected augmented wave method the dependence of the lowest-energy structure on the local and semilocal exchange-correlation (xc) energy functionals employed in density-functional theory. We found that the local-density approximation (LDA) and generalized-gradient formulations with different treatment of the electronic inhomogeneities (PBE, PBEsol, and AM05) confirm the DSC configuration as the lowest-energy structure for the studied TM(13) clusters. A good agreement in the relative total energies are obtained even for structures with small energy differences, e. g., 0.10 eV. The employed xc functionals yield the same total magnetic moment for a given structure, i.e., the differences in the bond lengths do not affect the moments, which can be attributed to the atomic character of those clusters. Thus, at least for those systems, the differences among the LDA, PBE, PBEsol, and AM05 functionals are not large enough to yield qualitatively different results. In this work, we employed the effective coordination concept to study the local environments of the Ge, Sb, and Te atoms in the Ge(m)Sb(2n)Te(m+3n) compounds. From our calculations and analysis, we found an average effective coordination number (ECN) reduction of 1.59, 1.42, and 1.37, for the Ge, Sb, Te atoms in the phase transition from crystalline, ECN=5.55 (Ge), 5.73 (Sb), 4.37 (Te), to the amorphous phase, ECN=3.96 (Ge), 4.31 (Sb), 3.09 (Te), for the Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5) composition. Similar changes are observed for other compositions. Thus, our results indicate that the coordination changes from the crystalline to amorphous phase are not large as previously assumed in the literature, i.e., from sixfold to fourfold for Ge, which can contribute to obtain a better understanding of the crystalline to amorphous phase transition. The reverse engineering problem addressed in the present research consists of estimating the thicknesses and the optical constants of two thin films deposited on a transparent substrate using only transmittance data through the whole stack. No functional dispersion relation assumptions are made on the complex refractive index. Instead, minimal physical constraints are employed, as in previous works of some of the authors where only one film was considered in the retrieval algorithm. To our knowledge this is the first report on the retrieval of the optical constants and the thickness of multiple film structures using only transmittance data that does not make use of dispersion relations. The same methodology may be used if the available data correspond to normal reflectance. Background: Citrus canker is a disease that has severe economic impact on the citrus industry worldwide. There are three types of canker, called A, B, and C. The three types have different phenotypes and affect different citrus species. The causative agent for type A is Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, whose genome sequence was made available in 2002. Xanthomonas fuscans subsp. aurantifolii strain B causes canker B and Xanthomonas fuscans subsp. aurantifolii strain C causes canker C. Results: We have sequenced the genomes of strains B and C to draft status. We have compared their genomic content to X. citri subsp. citri and to other Xanthomonas genomes, with special emphasis on type III secreted effector repertoires. In addition to pthA, already known to be present in all three citrus canker strains, two additional effector genes, xopE3 and xopAI, are also present in all three strains and are both located on the same putative genomic island. These two effector genes, along with one other effector-like gene in the same region, are thus good candidates for being pathogenicity factors on citrus. Numerous gene content differences also exist between the three cankers strains, which can be correlated with their different virulence and host range. Particular attention was placed on the analysis of genes involved in biofilm formation and quorum sensing, type IV secretion, flagellum synthesis and motility, lipopolysacharide synthesis, and on the gene xacPNP, which codes for a natriuretic protein. Conclusion: We have uncovered numerous commonalities and differences in gene content between the genomes of the pathogenic agents causing citrus canker A, B, and C and other Xanthomonas genomes. Molecular genetics can now be employed to determine the role of these genes in plant-microbe interactions. The gained knowledge will be instrumental for improving citrus canker control.

Magnetic AFM probes known as MAClevers (R) were employed for sensing picogram amounts of magnetic nanoparticles, based on the cantilever frequency shifts resulting from the magnetically induced adsorption of mass. By using organothiol functionalized magnetic nanoparticles, this analytical strategy was successfully extended to the detection of gold nanoparticles, as confirmed by confocal Raman microscopy.

The effects of solvents on different chemical phenomena, including reactivity, spectroscopic data, and swelling of biopolymers can be rationalized by use of solvatochromic probes, substances whose UV-vis spectra, absorption, or emission are sensitive to the properties of the medium. Thermo-solvatochromism refers to the effect of temperature on solvatochromism. The study of both phenomena sheds light on the relative importance of the factors that contribute to solvation, namely, properties of the probe, those of the solvent (acidity, basicity, dipolarity/polarizability, and lipophilicity), and the temperature. Solvation in binary solvent mixtures is complex because of ""preferential solvation"" of the probe by some component of the mixture. A recently introduced solvent exchange model is based on the presence in the binary solvent mixture of the organic component (molecular solvent or ionic liquid), S, water, W, and a 1:1 hydrogen-bonded species (S-W). Solvation by the latter is more efficient than by its precursor solvents, due to probe-solvent hydrogen-bonding and hydrophobic interactions; dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-W is an exception. Solvatochromic data are employed in order to explain apparently disconnected phenomena, namely, medium effect on the pH-independent hydrolysis of esters, (1)H NMR data of water-ionic liquid (IL) mixtures, and the swelling of cellulose.

An acetylcholinesterase (AchE) based amperometric biosensor was developed by immobilisation of the enzyme onto a self assembled modified gold electrode. Cyclic voltammetric experiments performed with the SAM-AchE biosensor in phosphate buffer solutions ( pH = 7.2) containing acetylthiocholine confirmed the formation of thiocholine and its electrochemical oxidation at E-p = 0.28 V vs Ag/AgCl. An indirect methodology involving the inhibition effect of parathion and carbaryl on the enzymatic reaction was developed and employed to measure both pesticides in spiked natural water and food samples without pre-treatment or pre-concentration steps. Values higher than 91-98.0% in recovery experiments indicated the feasibility of the proposed electroanalytical methodology to quantify both pesticides in water or food samples. HPLC measurements were also performed for comparison and confirmed the values measured amperometrically.

The k(0)-method instrumental neutron activation analysis (k(0)-INAA) was employed for determining chemical elements in bird feathers. A collection was obtained taking into account several bird species from wet ecosystems in diverse regions of Brazil. For comparison reason, feathers were actively sampled in a riparian forest from the Marins Stream, Piracicaba, Sao Paulo State, using mist nets specific for capturing birds. Biological certified reference materials were used for assessing the quality of analytical procedure. Quantification of chemical elements was performed using the k(0)-INAA Quantu Software. Sixteen chemical elements, including macro and micronutrients, and trace elements, have been quantified in feathers, in which analytical uncertainties varied from 2% to 40% depending on the chemical element mass fraction. Results indicated high mass fractions of Br (max=7.9 mgkg(-1)), Co (max= 0.47 mg kg(-1)), Cr (max =68 mg kg(-1)), Hg (max =2.79 mg kg(-1)), Sb (max= 0.20 mg kg(-1)), Se (max=1.3 mg kg(-1)) and Zn (max =192 mg kg(-1)) in bird feathers, probably associated with the degree of pollution of the areas evaluated. In order to corroborate the use of k(0)-INAA results in biomonitoring studies using avian community, different factor analysis methods were used to check chemical element source apportionment and locality clustering based on feather chemical composition. A green and highly sensitive analytical procedure was developed for the determination of free chlorine in natural waters, based on the reaction with N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD). The flow system was designed with solenoid micro-pumps in order to improve mixing conditions by pulsed flows and to minimize reagent consumption as well as waste generation. A 100-cm optical path flow cell based on a liquid core waveguide was employed to increase sensitivity. A linear response was observed within the range 10.0 to 100.0 mu g L(-1), with the detection limit, coefficient of variation and sampling rate estimated as 6.8 mu g (99.7% confidence level), 0.9% (n = 20) and 60 determinations per hour, respectively. The consumption of the most toxic reagent (DPD) was reduced 20,000-fold and 30-fold in comparison to the batch method and flow injection with continuous reagent addition, respectively. The results for natural and tap water samples agreed with those obtained by the reference batch spectrophotometric procedure at the 95% confidence level. (C) 2010 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

An environmentally friendly analytical procedure with high sensitivity for determination of carbaryl pesticide in natural waters was developed. The flow system was designed with solenoid micro-pumps in order to improve mixing conditions and minimize reagent consumption as well as waste generation. A long pathlength (100 cm) flow cell based on a liquid core waveguide (LCW) was employed to increase the sensitivity in detection of the indophenol formed from the reaction between carbaryl and p-aminophenol (PAP). A clean-up step based on cloud-point extraction was explored to remove the interfering organic matter, avoiding the use of toxic organic solvents. A linear response was observed within the range 5-200 mu g L(-1) and the detection limit, coefficient of variation and sampling rate were estimated as 1.7 mu g L(-1) (99.7% confidence level), 0.7% (n=20) and 55 determinations per hour, respectively. The reagents consumption was 1.9 mu g of PAP and 5.7 mu g of potassium metaperiodate, with volume of 2.6 mL of effluent per determination. The proposed procedure was selective for the determination of carbaryl, without interference from other carbamate pesticides. Recoveries within 84% and 104% were estimated for carbaryl spiked to water samples and the results obtained were also in agreement with those found by a batch spectrophotometric procedure at the 95% confidence level. The waste of the analytical procedure was treated with potassium persulphate and ultraviolet irradiation, yielding a colorless residue and a decrease of 94% of total organic carbon. In addition, the residue after treatment was not toxic for Vibrio fischeri bacteria. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
