Social network measures for "nosduocentered" networks, their predictive power on performance

Our purpose in this article is to define a network structure which is based on two egos instead of the egocentered (one ego) or the complete network (n egos). We describe the characteristics and properties for this kind of network which we call “nosduocentered network”, comparing it with complete and egocentered networks. The key point for this kind of network is that relations exist between the two main egos and all alters, but relations among others are not observed. After that, we use new social network measures adapted to the nosduocentered network, some of which are based on measures for complete networks such as degree, betweenness, closeness centrality or density, while some others are tailormade for nosduocentered networks. Behavioral Measures and their Correlation with IPM Iteration Counts on Semi-Definite Programming Problems

We study four measures of problem instance behavior that might account for the observed differences in interior-point method (IPM) iterations when these methods are used to solve semidefinite programming (SDP) problem instances: (i) an aggregate geometry measure related to the primal and dual feasible regions (aspect ratios) and norms of the optimal solutions, (ii) the (Renegar-) condition measure C(d) of the data instance, (iii) a measure of the near-absence of strict complementarity of the optimal solution, and (iv) the level of degeneracy of the optimal solution. We compute these measures for the SDPLIB suite problem instances and measure the correlation between these measures and IPM iteration counts (solved using the software SDPT3) when the measures have finite values. Our conclusions are roughly as follows: the aggregate geometry measure is highly correlated with IPM iterations (CORR = 0.896), and is a very good predictor of IPM iterations, particularly for problem instances with solutions of small norm and aspect ratio. The condition measure C(d) is also correlated with IPM iterations, but less so than the aggregate geometry measure (CORR = 0.630). The near-absence of strict complementarity is weakly correlated with IPM iterations (CORR = 0.423). The level of degeneracy of the optimal solution is essentially uncorrelated with IPM iterations.

Impacto de una intervención de precauciones de contacto sobre la infección intrahospitalaria en una unidad neonatal

Introducción : las infecciones intrahospitalarias llevan alta morbilidad y mortalidad en pacientes críticamente enfermos en unidades neonatales. Materiales y métodos : después de un período de observación de 5 meses, se realizó una intervención educativa en una unidad neonatal de referencia en Bogotá sobre adecuadas técnicas de aislamiento y precauciones de contacto, basados en la toma de cultivos de piel para evaluar la colonización microbiológica. Se evaluó la tasa de infecciones intrahospitalarias (IIH) de los dos períodos y se realizó un ajuste teniendo en cuenta variables confusoras que afectan el riesgo de infección intrahospitalaria a través de un modelo de regresión logística incondicional. Resultados : se evaluaron 450 neonatos. 78 pacientes tuvieron IIH, siendo mayor en el primer grupo (45 de 247; 18,2%), que en el de intervención educativa: (33 de 203; 16,2%). La IIH se presentó en 17 de 25 pacientes colonizados (66,7%), 15 de 44 pacientes no colonizados (34%) y uno de los 134 pacientes a los que no se les tomó muestra (0,75%; p<0,01). El modelo mostró que el riesgo de IIH fue mayor en el grupo no intervenido, (O.R. 1,99, I.C. 95%: 1,39-12,30); otros factores de riesgo identificados fueron el uso de nutrición parenteral, la presencia de cardiopatía congénita y una mayor estancia hospitalaria. Discusión : una intervención educativa sobre adecuadas técnicas de aislamiento y precauciones de contacto en neonatos, basados en la toma de cultivos de piel para evaluar la colonización microbiológica, se asoció con una menor tasa de IIH en el grupo intervenido en una UCIN.

The three systems for the protection of fundamental human rights in the European Union and exceptional measures against terrorism: the case of extraordinary extraditions (the CIA flights) with special reference to the Spanish case

This document is aimed first of all, make a small introductory reference on the three levels of protection of fundamental rights in Europe with the idea of helping to clarify and understand mainly to non-European systems that we are not talking. For that, based on this, going on to assess the impact generated in these systems suggest that the complaints alleged involvement of European countries in secret CIA flights to combat international terrorism, as well as investigate the responses that have given each protection of these areas to try to clarify them. 

Academic achievement in sciences: the role of preferences and educative assets

This paper provides new evidence on the effect of pupil’s self-motivation and academic assets allocation on the academic achievement in sciences across countries. By using the Programme for International Student Assessment 2006 (PISA 2006) test we find that both explanatory variables have a positive effect on student’s performance. Self-motivation is measured through an instrument that allows us to avoid possible endogeneity problems. Quantile regression is used for analyzing the existence of different estimated coefficients over the distribution. It is found that both variables have different effect on academic performance depending on the pupil’s score. These findings support the importance of designing focalized programs for different populations, especially in terms of access to information and communication technologies such as internet.
