The aim of the work was to study the effect of milking fraction on electrical conductivity of milk (EC) to improve its use in dairy goat mastitis detection using automatic EC measurements during milking. The experiment was carried out on a group of 84 Murciano-Granadina goats (28 primiparous and 56 multiparous). Goats were in the fourth month of lactation. A linear mixed model was used to analyse the relationship between EC or somatic cell count (SCC) of gland milk and parity, mammary gland health status, analysed fraction (first 100 mL=F-1; machine milk=F-2; and stripping milk=F-3) and their first order interactions. Additionally, the mastitis detection characteristics (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value) of SCC and EC were studied at different thresholds. All factors considered were significant for EC and SCC. EC decreased significantly as milking progressed (from F-1 to F-3) in both healthy and infected glands. EC was not significantly different between healthy and infected glands in F-1 and F-2 fractions, but EC of healthy glands (5.01 mS/cm) was significantly lower than in infected glands (5.03 mS/cm) at F-3.Mastitis detection characteristics of EC did not differ amongst studied fractions. The small significant difference of EC between healthy and infected glands obtained in F-3 fraction did not yield better sensitivity results compared to F-1 and F-2. The best EC mastitis detection characteristics were obtained at 5.20 mS/cm threshold (sensitivity of 70% and specificity of 50%). The best SCC mastitis detection characteristics were obtained at 300,000 cells/mL threshold and F-3 fraction (sensitivity of 85% and specificity of 65%).It was concluded that mastitis detection characteristics of EC were similar in the three milking fractions analysed, being slightly better for SCC in F-3 fraction. As shown in previous studies, there are no factors other than the mammary gland health status that affect milk EC and should be considered in the algorithms for mastitis detection to improve the results. The behaviour of dc longitudinal and transverse conductivity in self-assembled plastdoped films of polyaniline has been studied over the range of 9 K to 320 K, under different applied mechanical pressures. We observe a progressive evolution of the conductivity picture as the applied pressure is increased, especially in the transverse direction, where the conductivity tends to lower as the pressure is increased. The electrical conductivity of Mn doped SnO2 systems prepared by an organic route (Pechini's method) has been investigated as a function of antimony and niobium concentration. The conductivity increases with the increase of both concentration ions, however, in a different manner. While the conductivity of niobium doped ceramics increases with the power of 1.6 for the entire range of concentrations studied (0.01-0.7 mol%), the conductivity of antimony doped ceramics increases with the power of 1.9 in the range 0.01-0.05 mol% of Sb; 3.7 in the range 0.05-0.30 mol% and 1.8 in the range 0.30-0.70 mol%. This behavior is attributed to the existence of two stable oxidation states for antimony: Sb3+ and Sb5+, while for niobium there is only one: Nb5+. The power of 3.7 for Sb would be related to the segregation of this ion on the grain boundary accompanied by an additional contribution coming from the substitution of Sn2+ by Sb3+ on the grain surface.

The complete I-V characteristics of SnO(2)-based varistors, particularly of the Pianaro system SCNCr consisting in 98.9%SnO(2)+1%CoO+0.05%Nb(2)O(5)+0.05%Cr(2)O(3), all in mol%, have been seldom reported in the literature. A comparative study at low and high currents of the nonohmic behavior of SCNCr- and ZnO-based varistors (modified Matsuoka system) is proposed in this work. The SCNCr system showed higher nonlinearity coefficients in the whole range of measured current. The electrical breakdown field (E(b)) was twice as high for the SCNCr system (5400 V/cm) than for the ZnO varistor (2600 V/cm) due to a smaller average grain size of the former (4.5 mu m) with respect to the latter (8.5 mu m). Nevertheless, we consider that another important factor responsible for the high E(b) in the SCNCr system is the great number of electrically active interfaces (85%) as determined with electrostatic force microscopy (EFM). It was also established that the SCNCr system might be produced in disks of smaller dimensions than that of commercial ZnO-based product, with a 5.0 cm(-1) minimal area-volume (A/V) ratio. The SCNCr reached the saturation current in a short time because of the high resistivity of the grains, which is five times higher than that of the grains in ZnO-based varistors.

The preparation of the ZrO(2):8 mol % Y(2)O(3)/NiO (YSZ/NiO) composites by a modified liquid mixture technique is reported. Nanometric NiO particles dispersed over the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) were prepared, resulting in dense sintered specimens with no solid solution formation between the oxides. Such a feature allowed for the electrical characterization of the composites in a wide range of relative volume fraction, temperature, and oxygen partial pressure. The main results indicate that the composites have high electrical conductivity, and the transport properties in these mixed ionic-electronic (MIEC) composites are strongly dependent on the relative volume fraction of the phases, microstructure, and temperature. These parameters should hence be taken into consideration for the optimized design of MIEC composites for electrochemical applications. In this context, the composite was reduced under H(2) for the preparation of high-conductivity YSZ/Ni cermets for use as solid oxide fuel cell anode material with relatively low metal content. The electrical characteristics of oxidized poly(thionaphtheneindole) were investigated as a function of ambient relative humidity (r.h.). The current flowing through a pressed pellet of material between two massive gold electrodes plotted against voltage gives a wave-shaped curve with a halfwave potential at V = similar to 3 V. The current recorded at 4 V (plateau of the wave) is a sigmoidal function of r.h, with the inflexion point at similar to 60%. An interpretation of these findings is given, based on the influence of water on the dielectric constant of the material and on acid-base equilibrium between poly(thionaphtheneindole) and water, from which protons are produced. The behaviour of poly (thionaphtheneindole) as the active component of an amperometric humidity sensor is also reported.

Reactive pure and manganese-doped (5% and 10 at.%) ceria nanosized powders were prepared by the polymeric precursor technique. Physical properties of powder materials were studied by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. Characterization of powder compacts after fast firing at 1200 degrees C for 5 min was carried out by scanning electron microscopy and impedance spectroscopy measurements. The bulk apparent density of sintered pellets was determined for pellets of different compositions sintered at 1200 degrees C. A gradual decrease of the particle size occurs with increasing doping content. Relatively high values of apparent density were obtained after fast firing doped specimens at 1200 degrees C. DRIFT spectra evidence that a fraction of Mn ions was segregated onto particles surface. The electrical resistivity of sintered pellets reveals different mechanisms of conduction depending on the Mn content. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

The effects of soybean genotype and seed coat lignin content on bulk electrical conductivity were investigated. Seeds of nine soybean cultivars were hand harvested at R8 maturation stage in Londrina, PR., Brazil in 1995/96. Seeds were electrical conductivity tested using four replicates of 50 seeds per cultivar soaked in 75 mi of deionized water at 25 degrees C for 24 hours. Seed coat lignin content was determined using the potassium permanganate method. There was a significant relationship (R-2 = 0.84**) between electrical conductivity and seed coat lignin content, the latter being a characteristic that varies among soybean genotypes; the higher the amount of lignin in the seed coat, the lower the levels of seed exudates to the soaking solution and consequently the lower the electrical conductivity. It was concluded that seed soaking electrical conductivity is influenced by the seed coat lignin content, which is a characteristic that varies among soybean genotypes. Additionally, the EC test can be used as a valuable tool in the screening process for this characteristic, which is desirable for genetically improving soybean seed quality.

During the period from October/92 to September/94 experiments were carried out at the Seed Laboratory, FCAV/UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, using soybean seeds of different genotypes in order to evaluate the effect of genotype on the electrical conductivity (bulk conductivity) of soaked seeds. Seed moisture content (105 ± 3°C, 24 h), standard germination (four 50-seed samples, paper towel, 30°C), and vigor-accelerated aging (42°C, 48 h) were first determined. Undamaged soybean seeds were soaked in deionized water (four 50-seed samples, 75 ml, 25°C, 24 h) and electrical conductivity (μmhos.cm+1.g+1) was measured. Significant differences in conductivity were observed among genotypes having the same pattern of germination and vigor. The results have showed that electrical conductivity can be significantly influenced by genotype.

We discuss non-steady state electrical characteristics of a metal-insulator-metal structure. We consider an exponential distribution (in energy) of impurity states in addition to impurity states at a single energy level within the depletion region. We discuss thermal as well as isothermal characteristics and present an expression for the temperature of maximum current (Tm) and a method to calculate the density of exponentially distributed impurity states. We plot the theoretical curves for various sets of parameters and the variation of Tm, and Im (maximum current) with applied potential for various impurity distributions. The present model can explain the available experimental results. Finally we compare the non-steady state characteristics in three cases: (i) impurity states only at a single energy level, (ii) uniform energetic distribution of impurity states, and (iii) exponential energetic distribution of impurity states.
