External assessment of myocardial glucose metabolism with $\sp{18}$F-2 -deoxy-2 -fluoro-D-glucose

Despite the popularity of the positron emitting glucose analog, ($\sp{18}$F) -2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose (2FDG), for the noninvasive "metabolic imaging" of organs with positron emission tomography (PET), the physiological basis for the tracer has not been tested, and the potential of 2FDG for the rapid kinetic analysis of altered glucose metabolism in the intact heart has not been fully exploited. We, therefore, developed a quantitative method to characterize metabolic changes of myocardial glucose metabolism noninvasively and with high temporal resolution.^ The first objective of the work was to provide direct evidence that the initial steps in the metabolism of 2FDG are the same as for glucose and that 2FDG is retained by the tissue in proportion to the rate of glucose utilization. The second objective was to characterize the kinetic changes in myocardial glucose transport and phosphorylation in response to changes in work load, competing substrates, acute ischemia and reperfusion, and the addition of insulin. To assess changes in myocardial glucose metabolism isolated working rat hearts were perfused with glucose and 2FDG. Tissue uptake of 2FDG and the input function were measured on-line by external detection. The steady state rate of 2FDG phosphorylation was determined by graphical analysis of 2FDG time-activity curves.^ The rate of 2FDG uptake was linear with time and the tracer was retained in its phosphorylated form. Tissue accumulation of 2FDG decreased within seconds with a reduction in work load, in the presence of competing substrates, and during reperfusion after global ischemia. Thus, most interventions known to alter glucose metabolism induced rapid parallel changes in 2FDG uptake. By contrast, insulin caused a significant increase in 2FDG accumulation only in hearts from fasted animals when perfused at a sub-physiological work load. The mechanism for this phenomenon is not known but may be related to the existence of two different glucose transporter systems and/or glycogen metabolism in the myocardial cell.^ It is concluded that (1) 2FDG traces glucose uptake and phosphorylation in the isolated working rat heart; and (2) early and transient kinetic changes in glucose metabolism can be monitored with high temporal resolution with 2FDG and a simple positron coincidence counting system. The new method has revealed transients of myocardial glucose metabolism, which would have remained unnoticed with conventional methods. These transients are not only important for the interpretation of glucose metabolic PET scans, but also provide insights into mechanisms of glucose transport and phosphorylation in heart muscle. ^

Mineralogy and age determination of sediment core D11957P

The Tore Seamount is a circular, volcano-like feature 100 km in diameter with its summit at 2200 m water depth and a small, 5000 m deep basin in its interior. It is situated approximately 300 km west of Lisbon and is surrounded by deep abyssal plains. This site with a standard pelagic stratigraphy is the southernmost point where the so-called Heinrich events have so far been recorded. A succession of alternating interglacial/glacial periods reveals a stratigraphic record back to the beginning of isotopic stage 7 (225 kyr). Climatic changes are identifiable by coherent variations in colour, carbonate content and distribution of ice-rafted detritus in the carbonate-free fraction. Inputs of ice-rafted quartz are well defined. Characteristics in common with other sites showing Heinrich layers include a high terrigenous to biogenic ratio, a dramatic decrease in the accumulation rate of foraminifera shells, an increase in dolomite abundance and the occurrence of polar foraminiferal species indicating southwards penetration of cold waters which lead us to consider a wider southeastern extent of the North Atlantic ice-rafted detritus belt than hitherto. If the presently accepted position of the Polar Front is maintained, icebergs must have been swept southwards from the southern boundary of the pack ice in a current merging into the ancestral Canary Current, bringing ice-rafted material to the Tore Seamount. The coincidence of reddish-feldspar, probably derived from the northern Appalachian Triassic red facies, with the transparent quartz suggests at least a partial Labrador source for all the Heinrich layers here, including HL 3. In comparison to other sites in the entire North Atlantic, two exceptions stand out: the absence of HL 5 and the low detritus to biogenics ratio for HL 3. The simultaneous occurrence of these two types of ice-rafted minerals is a new piece in the puzzle of the origin of Heinrich layers.

An iridium anomaly has been found in coincidence with the known microtektite level in cores from Deep Sea Drilling Project site 149 in the Caribbean Sea. The iridium was probably not in the microtektites but deposited simultaneously with them; this could occur if the iridium was deposited from a dust cloud resulting from a bolide impact, as suggested for the anomaly associated with the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. Other workers have deduced that the microtektites are part of the North American strewn tektite field, which is dated at about 34 million years before present, and that the microtektite horizon in deep-sea cores is synchronous with the extinction of five radiolarian species. Mass extinctions also occur in terrestrial mammals within 4 million years of this time. The iridium anomaly and the tektites and microtektites are supportive of a major bolide impact about 34 million years ago.

Phytol and phytyldiol concentrations at DYFAMED time series station and sediment trap

Particulate samples from the water column were collected monthly from depths of 5-150 m, between May 1996 and March 1997, in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea (Ligurian Sea) as part of the DYFAMED project within the French JGOFS program. These samples were analyzed by gas chromatography-electron impact mass spectrometry for their phytol and 3-methylidene-3,7,11-trimethylhexadecan-1,2-diol (phytyldiol) content. The corresponding Chlorophyll Phytyl side chain Photodegradation Index, molar ratio of phytyldiol to phytol, was calculated and the mean amount of chlorophyll photodegraded within the euphotic zone estimated. Seasonal differences in the chlorophyll photodegradation process appear in the one-year study. The chlorophyll appeared more photodegraded in the surface water (generally more than 40% photodegraded at 5-10 m) than at the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) (40-50 m) observed in the summer stratified waters (about 20% photodegraded). This difference was attributed to the healthy state of the phytoplankton community (coincidence with the highest primary production levels) and to the lower intensity of irradiance at the DCM level. On the other hand, the bulk of the detrital chlorophyll (chlorophyll associated with phytodetritus, phaeopigments) undergoes photodegradation before it sinks out of the photic zone. However, in January (winter mixed water) the pigments exported towards the sea floor were less photodegraded. This is thought to result from a shorter period of residence of the pigments in the photic zone due to vertical convection and grazing activity of macrozooplankton (salps), which are producers of rapid sinking fecal pellets.

Characteristics of the spatial structure of vertical synoptic currents were calculated from data of the density field surveys in order to estimate their influence on distribution of chlorophyll a concentration. Comparisons of chlorophyll concentration and vertical currents were implemented for two multidisciplinary surveys in the Black Sea carried out in summer, 1991 and in winter, 1994. The results showed qualitative and quantitative indications of coincidence of characteristics cited and, in particular, significant positive values of the correlation coefficient (0.65 for the summer survey and 0.83 for the winter one).

Relative abundance and isotopic composition of calcite, dolomite and siderite from ODP Leg 164 sites

Authigenic carbonate mineral distributions are compared to pore-water geochemical profiles and used to evaluate diagenesis within sedimentary sections containing gas hydrates on the Blake Ridge (Ocean Drilling Program Sites 994, 995, and 997). Carbonate mineral distributions reveal three distinct diagenetic zones. (1) Carbonate minerals in the upper 20 m are primarily biogenic and show no evidence of diagenesis. The d13C and d18O values of calcite within this zone reflects marine carbonate (~0 per mil Peedee belemnite [PDB]) formed in equilibrium with seawater. (2) Between 20 and 100 mbsf, calcite d13C values are distinctly negative (as low as -7.0 per mil), and authigenic dolomite is common (~2-40 wt%) with d13C values between -3.6 per mil and 13.7 per mil. (3) Below 100 mbsf, dolomite abundance decreases to trace amounts, and disseminated siderite becomes the pervasive (~2-30 wt%) authigenic carbonate. Both siderite textures and stable isotope values indicate direct precipitation from pore fluids rather than dolomite replacement. The d13C and d18O values of siderite vary from 5.0 per mil to 10.9 per mil and 2.9 per mil to 7.6 per mil, respectively. Comparisons between the d13C profiles of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and pore-water concentration gradients, with the d13C and d18O values of authigenic carbonates, delineate a distinct depth zonation for authigenic carbonate mineral formation. Coincidence of the most negative d13CDIC values (<=-38 per mil) and negative d13C values of both calcite and dolomite, with pore-water alkalinity increases, sulfate depletion, and decreases in interstitial Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations at and below 20 mbsf, suggests that authigenic calcite and dolomite formation is initiated at the base of the sulfate reduction zone (~21 mbsf) and occurs down to ~100 mbsf. Siderite formation apparently occurs between 120 and 450 mbsf; within, and above, the gas hydrate-bearing section of the sediment column (~200-450 mbsf). Siderite d13C and d18O values are nearly uniform from their shallowest occurrence to the bottom of the sedimentary section. However, present-day pore-water d13CDIC values are only similar to siderite d13C values between ~100 and 450 mbsf. Furthermore, calculated equilibrium d18O values of siderite match the measured 18O values of siderite between 120 and 450 mbsf. This interval is characterized by high alkalinity (40-120 mM) and low Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations, conditions that are consistent with siderite formation.

Organic matter composition of Cretaceous sediments of the central Pacific Ocean

Complete records of organic-carbon-rich Cretaceous strata were continuouslycored on the flanks of the Mid-Pacific Mountains and southern Hess Rise in the central North Pacific Ocean during DSDP Leg 62. Organic-carbon-rich laminated silicified limestones were deposited in the western Mid-Pacific Mountains during the early Aptian, a time when that region was south of the equator and considerably shallower than at present. Organic-carbon-rich, laminated limestone on southern Hess Rise overlies volcanic basement and includes 136 m of stratigraphic section of late Albian to early Cenomanian age. This limestone unit was deposited rapidly as Hess Rise was passing under the equatorial high-productivity zone and was subsiding from shallow to intermediate depths. The association of volcanogenic components with organic-carbon-rich strata on Hess Rise in the Mid-Pacific Mountains is striking and suggests that there was a coincidence of mid-plate volcanic activity and the production and accumulation of organic matter at intermediate water depths in the tropical Pacific Ocean during the middle Cretaceous. Pyrolysis assays and analyses of extractable hydrocarbons indicate that the organic matter in the limestone on Hess Rise is composed mainly of lipid-rich kerogen derived from aquatic marine organisms and bacteria. Limestones from the Mid-Pacific Mountains generally contain low ratios of pyrolytic hydrocarbons to organic carbon and low hydrogen indices, suggesting that the organic matter may contain a significant proportion of land-derived material, possibly derived from numerous volcanic islands that must have existed before the area subsided. The organic carbon in all samples analyzed is isotopically light (d13C -24 to -29 per mil) relative to most modern rine organic carbon, and the lightest carbon is also the most lipid-rich. There is a positive linear correlation between sulfur and organic carbon in samples from Hess Rise and from the Mid-Pacific Mountains. The slopes and intercepts of C-S regression lines however, are different for each site and all are different from regression lines for samples from modern anoxic marine sediments and from Black Sea cores. The organic-carbon-rich limestones on Hess Rise, the Mid-Pacific Mountains, and other plateaus and seamounts in the Pacific Ocean are not synchronous but do occur within the same general middle Cretaceous time period as organic-carbon-rich lithofacies elsewhere in the world ocean, particularly in the Atlantic Ocean. Strata of equivalent age in the deep basins of the Pacific Ocean are not rich in organic carbon, and were deposited in oxygenated environments. This observation, together with the evidence that the plateau sites were considerably shallower and closse to the equator during the middle Creataceous suggests that local tectonic and hydrographic conditions may have resulted in high surface-water productivity and the preservation of organic matter in an oxygen-deficient environment where an expanded mid-water oxygen minimum developed and impinged on elevated platforms and seamounts.

Por otra parte, el nombre y la función dramática de Teónoe están realmente demasiado cercanos a aquellos de Téano (la sacerdotisa de Eleusis citada por Plutarco como la única en haberse negado a maldecir a Alcibíades), como para que la similitud onomástica sea fortuita.

De los conflictos laborales a las huelgas generales : Algunos apuntes para pensar su dinámica 2002-2012 en Argentina

El trabajo reflexiona sobre la relación conflictos laborales-huelgas generales en el período 2002-2012 en Argentina a partir del debate Iñigo Carrera-Adrian Piva sobre la huelga general como indicador de los momentos de ascenso y descenso de la lucha de clases, y vinculando dicha relación con algunas discusiones entre las tesis económicas y políticas del conflicto laboral. Incluye una reconstrucción estadística de la conflictividad laboral con datos del Centro de Estudios Nueva Mayoría, Taller de Estudios Laborales y el Ministerio de Trabajo, Empleo y Seguridad Social. Finalmente, reconstruye las huelgas generales a partir de los periódicos Página 12 y La Nación. La relación entre estos tipos de conflicto está históricamente determinada y es por lo tanto, cambiante. En la década se observa desacople mas que coincidencia en ambas protestas, sin embargo, el análisis de las huelgas generales del período cristaliza ciertas transformaciones vividas por el movimiento obrero organizado en nuestro país.

Entrelíneas para una introspección poética : Rubén Darío y Antonio Machado en 1903

Este trabajo intenta mostrar una actitud poética común coincidente entre Antonio Machado y Rubén Darío. Dicha actitud, que consiste en defender la introspección como fórmula adecuada para la expresión poética, es perceptible en un momento determinado de la trayectoria poética individual de cada uno. Sin embargo, es interesante ver cómo se muestra en el diálogo estético que ambos establecen a través de su creación como ofrenda al otro: aquellos poemas en los que el paratexto se dedica al otro pero el texto no se adecua (no utilizan el ritmo, el tono y el léxico) a quien va dirigida la dedicatoria. Obras que son parte de uno mismo, canto a sí mismo, y, sin embargo, se ofrecen al otro. Esta ofrenda puede apreciarse, desde nuestra perspectiva, en dos poemas concretos: "El canto de los niños", y "Caracol". Dedicados del uno al otro, son analizados en coincidencia estética entre Darío y Machado en torno a la fecha de 1903.

"Heliodoros/putifar" y el culto solar de Heliopolis (o las Etiópicas, una Loa a Augusto)

En este trabajo mostramos que, si hubo un culto solar en las Etiópicas de Heliodoro, no es el de Émesa del siglo III d.C. de los Severos, sino el de la antigua Heliópolis egipcia, que provee la base de la astronomía antigua. El gran sacerdote del templo del Sol (Ra) de Heliópolis se llamaba, en hebreo, "Putifar"; en griego, "Heliodoros": extraordinaria coincidencia, ya que el motivo de la mujer de Putifar de Génesis 39.7-20 ocupa un lugar destacado en la trama de la novela, pero ésta atiende estrictamente a sus modelos griegos clásicos. Proponemos, además, que la composición de la obra coincide con o surge del Carmen Sæculare de Horacio.

Isotopic record across the Aptian/Albian boundary of ODP Hole 171-1049C

Geochemical analyses of extraordinarily well preserved late Aptian-early Albian foraminifera from Blake Nose (Ocean Drilling Program Site 1049) reveal rapid shifts of d18O, d13C, and 87Sr/88Sr in the subtropical North Atlantic that may be linked to a major planktic foraminifer extinction event across the Aptian/Albian boundary. The abruptness of the observed geochemical shifts and their coincidence with a sharp lithologic contact is explained as an artifact of a previously undetected hiatus of 0.8-1.4 million years at the boundary contact, but the values before and after the hiatus indicate that major oceanographic changes occurred at this time. 87Sr/88Sr increase by ~0.000200, d13C values decrease by 1.5 per mil to 2.2 per mil, and d18O values decrease by ~1.0 per mil (planktics) to 0.5 per mil (benthics) across the hiatus. Further, both 87Sr/88Sr ratios and d18O values during the Albian are anomalously high. The 87Sr/88Sr values deviate from known patterns to such a degree that an explanation requires either the presence of inter-basin differences in seawater 87Sr/88Sr during the Albian or revision of the seawater curve. For d18O, planktic values in some Aptian samples likely reflect a diagenetic overprint, but preservation is excellent in the rest of the section. In well preserved material, benthic foraminiferal values are largely between 0.5 and 0.0 per mil and planktic samples are largely between 0.0 per mil to -1.0 per mil, with a brief excursion to -2.0 per mil during OAE 1b. Using standard assumptions for Cretaceous isotopic paleotemperature calculations, the d18O values suggest bottom water temperatures (at ~1000 -1500 m) of 8-10°C and surface temperatures of 10-14°C, which are 4-6°C and 10-16°C cooler, respectively, than present-day conditions at the same latitude. The cool subtropical sea surface temperature estimates are especially problematic because other paleoclimate proxy data for the mid-Cretaceous and climate model predictions suggest that subtropical sea surface temperatures should have been the same as or warmer than at present. Because of their exquisite preservation, whole scale alteration of the analyzed foraminifera is an untenable explanation. Our proposed solution is a high evaporative fractionation factor in the early Albian North Atlantic that resulted in surface waters with higher d18O values at elevated salinities than commonly cited in Cretaceous studies. A high fractionation factor is consistent with high rates of vapor export and a vigorous hydrological cycle and, like the Sr isotopes, implies limited connectivity among the individual basins of the Early Cretaceous proto-Atlantic ocean.
