Two bottom sediment cores (BP00-23/7 and BP00-7/6) recovered from the Yenisei transect in the southern Kara Sea are described. Data on their grain size composition, clay and heavy mineral assemblages, and distribution of a large group of chemical elements are presented. Radiocarbon dates based on AMS C-14 method suggest the Holocene age of sediments in the cores. Literature data on physical properties and foraminifers have also been analyzed. The facies affiliation of the lithostratigraphic subdivisions has been unraveled. History of the Yenisei River runoff in the Holocene has been reconstructed on the basis of different indicators.

Siwalik paleosol and Bengal Fan sediment samples were analyzed for the abundance and isotopic composition of n-alkanes in order to test for molecular evidence of the expansion of C4 grasslands on the Indian subcontinent. The carbon isotopic compositions of high-molecular-weight alkanes in both the ancient soils and sediments record a shift from low d13C values (ca. -30 per mil) to higher values (ca. -22 per mil) prior to 6 Ma. This shift is similar in magnitude to that recorded by paleosol carbonate and fossil teeth, and is consistent with a relatively rapid transition from dominantly C3 vegetation to an ecosystem dominated by C4 plants typical of semi-arid grasslands. The n-alkane values from our paleosol samples indicate that the isotopic change began as early as 9 Ma, reflecting either a growing contribution of C4 plants to a dominantly C3 biomass or a decrease in water availability to C3 plants. Molecular and isotopic analyses of other compounds, including n-alcohols and low-molecular weight n-alkanes indicate paleosol organic matter contains contributions from a mixture of sources, including vascular plants, algae and/or cyanobacteria and microorganisms. A range of inputs is likewise reflected in the isotopic composition of the total organic carbon from these samples. In addition, the n-alkanes from two samples show little evidence for pedegenic inputs and we suggest the compounds were derived instead from the paleosol's parent materials. We suggest the record of vegetation in ancient terrestrial ecosystems is better reconstructed using isotopic signatures of molecular markers, rather than bulk organic carbon. This approach provides a means of expanding the spatial and temporal records of C4 plant biomass which will help to resolve possible tectonic, climatic or biological controls on the rise of this important component of the terrestrial biosphere.

Many genera of modern planktic foraminifera are adapted to nutrient-poor (oligotrophic) surface waters by hosting photosynthetic symbionts, but it is unknown how they will respond to future changes in ocean temperature and acidity. Here we show that ca. 40 Ma, some fossil photosymbiont-bearing planktic foraminifera were temporarily 'bleached' of their symbionts coincident with transient global warming during the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO). At Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 748 and 1051 (Southern Ocean and mid-latitude North Atlantic, respectively), the typically positive relationship between the size of photosymbiont-bearing planktic foraminifer tests and their carbon isotope ratios (d13C) was temporarily reduced for ~100 k.y. during the peak of the MECO. At the same time, the typically photosymbiont-bearing planktic foraminifera Acarinina suffered transient reductions in test size and relative abundance, indicating ecological stress. The coincidence of minimum d18O values and reduction in test size-d13C gradients suggests a link between increased sea-surface temperatures and bleaching during the MECO, although changes in pH and nutrient availability may also have played a role. Our findings show that host-photosymbiont interactions are not constant through geological time, with implications for both the evolution of trophic strategies in marine plankton and the reliability of geochemical proxy records generated from symbiont-bearing planktic foraminifera.

We present modern B/Ca core-top calibrations for the epifaunal benthic foraminifer Nuttallides umbonifera and the infaunal Oridorsalis umbonatus to test whether B/Ca values in these species can be used for the reconstruction of paleo-D[[CO3]2-]. O. umbonatus originated in the Late Cretaceous and remains extant, whereas N. umbonifera originated in the Eocene and is the closest extant relative to Nuttallides truempyi, which ranges from the Late Cretaceous through the Eocene. We measured B/Ca in both species in 35 Holocene sediment samples from the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern Oceans. B/Ca values in epifaunal N. umbonifera (~ 85-175 µmol/mol) are consistently lower than values reported for epifaunal Cibicidoides (Cibicides) wuellerstorfi (130-250 µmol/mol), though the sensitivity of D[[CO3]2-] on B/Ca in N. umbonifera (1.23 ± 0.15) is similar to that in C. wuellerstorfi (1.14 ± 0.048). In addition, we show that B/Ca values of paired N. umbonifera and its extinct ancestor, N. truempyi, from Eocene cores are indistinguishable within error. In contrast, both the B/Ca (35-85 µmol/mol) and sensitivity to D[[CO3]2-] (0.29 ± 0.20) of core-top O. umbonatus are considerably lower (as in other infaunal species), and this offset extends into the Paleocene. Thus the B/Ca of N. umbonifera and its ancestor can be used to reconstruct bottom water D[[CO3]2?], whereas O. umbonatus B/Ca appears to be buffered by porewater [[CO3]2-] and suited for constraining long-term drift in seawater B/Ca.

Sediment samples taken at close intervals across four major unconformities (middle Miocene/upper Miocene, lower Oligocene/upper Oligocene, lower Eocene/upper Eocene, lower Paleocene/upper Paleocene) at DSDP-IPOD Site 548, Goban Spur, reveal that coeval biostratigraphic gaps, sediment discontinuities, and seismic unconformities coincide with postulated low stands of sea level. Foraminiferal, lithic, and isotopic analyses demonstrate that environments began to shift prior to periods of marine erosion, and that sedimentation resumed in the form of turbidites derived from nearby upper-slope sources. The unconformities appear to have developed where a water-mass boundary intersected the continental slope, rhythmically crossing the drill site in concert with sea-level rise and fall.

Past changes in sea-surface productivity in the Oyashio Current are evaluated on the basis of abundances of biological constituents in sediments from Leg 186 sites. Organic carbon contents at Sites 1150 and 1151 are moderate (0.5 to 1.5 wt%) and have an algal origin as indicated by low C/N ratios (<10) and by carbon isotopic compositions ranging from -23.4 to -21.3. A decreasing trend in organic carbon contents, carbon isotope ratios, and C/N ratios occurs with depth at both sites, probably as a consequence of diagenetic degradation of organic matter. Mass accumulation rates (MARs) determined for organic carbon and carbonates at Sites 1150 and 1151 show an abrupt increase between ~5 and 7 Ma. Similar results have been reported for sites in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean for the same time interval. As it has been previously suggested, the observed increase in MAR for both carbonate and organic carbon at Leg 186 sites probably resulted from augmented nutrient supply either from continental sources or from a more vigorous ocean circulation.
