Lake La Thuile, in the Northern French Prealps (874 m a.s.l.), provides an 18 m long sedimentary sequence spanning the entire Lateglacial/Holocene period. The high resolution multi-proxy (sedimentological, palynological, geochemical) analysis of the uppermost 6.2 meters reveals the Holocene dynamics of erosion in the catchment in response to landscape modifications. The mountain belt is at relevant altitude to study past human activities and the watershed is sufficiently disconnected from large valleys to capture a local sedimentary signal. From 12,000 to 10,000 cal. BP (10 to 8 ka cal. BC), the onset of hardwood species triggered a drop in erosion following the Lateglacial/Holocene transition. From 10,000 to 4500 cal. BP (8 to 2.5 ka cal. BC), the forest became denser and favored slope stabilization while erosion processes were very weak. A first erosive phase was initiated at ca . 4500 cal. BP without evidence of human presence in the catchment. Then, the forest declined at approximately 3000 cal. BP, suggesting the first human influence on the landscape. Two other erosive phases are related to anthropic activities: approximately 2500 cal. BP (550 cal. BC) during the Roman period and after 1600 cal. BP (350 cal. AD) with a substantial accentuation in the Middle Ages. In contrast, the lower erosion produced during the Little Ice Age, when climate deteriorations are generally considered to result in an increased erosion signal in this region, suggests that anthropic activities dominated the erosive processes and completely masked the natural effects of climate on erosion in the late Holocene.

Effects of soil properties on the accumulation of metals to wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) were evaluated at two sites with different pH and organic matter content of the soil. pH and organic matter content significantly affected accumulation of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in earthworms and vegetation. For Cd, Cu and Zn these effects propagated through the food web to the wood mouse. Soil-to-kidney ratios differed between sites: Cd: 0.15 versus 3.52, Cu: 0.37 versus 1.30 and Zn: 0.33-0.83. This was confirmed in model calculations for Cd and Zn. Results indicate that total soil concentrations may be unsuitable indicators for risks that metals pose to wildlife. Furthermore, environmental managers may, unintentionally, change soil properties while taking specific environmental measures. In this way they may affect risks of metals to wildlife, even without changes in total soil concentrations.

The dataset is based on samples taken during October 2008 in the North-Eastern Aegean Sea. NH4 excretion rate: Mesozooplankton is collected by vertical tows within the Black sea water body mass layer in the NE Aegean, using a WP-2 200 µm net equipped with a large non-filtering cod-end (10 l). Macrozooplankton organisms are removed using a 2000 µm net. A few unsorted animals (approximately 100) are placed inside 8 bottles of 350 or 650 ml filled with GF/F or 0.2 µm Nucleopore filtered seawater and then on a wheell at dim light and maintaining the in situ temperature. 4 bottles without animals are used as control. After 24hours bottles are opened and water samples taken for NH4 chemical analysis. Then the bottle content is filtered on pre-combusted preweighted CF/F filters, which are then dried at 60 C and weighted. Calculations are made as described by Ikeda et al. (2000). Samples for the NH4 determination were collected in pre-cleaned 50 ml Duran bottles and analysed onboard immediately after collection. Ammonium concentration was measured on a Perkin Elmer Lambda 25 UV/VIS Spectrometer according to the method of Koroleff (1970). PO4 excretion rate: Mesozooplankton is collected by vertical tows within the Black sea water body mass layer in the NE Aegean, using a WP-2 200 µm net equipped with a large non-filtering cod-end (10 l). Macrozooplankton organisms are removed using a 2000 µm net. After 24hours bottles are opened and water samples taken for PO4 chemical analysis. Then the bottle content is filtered on pre-combusted preweighted CF/F filters, which are then dried at 60 C and weighted. Calculations are made as described by Ikeda et al. (2000). Samples for the determination of PO4 were collected in pre-cleaned 50 ml polyethylene volumetric tubes and analysed on board immediately after collection. PO4 concentration was measured on a Perkin Elmer Lambda 25 UV/VIS Spectrometer following the protocol of Murphy and Riley (1962). O2 consumption rate: Mesozooplankton is collected by vertical tows within the Black sea water body mass layer in the NE Aegean, using a WP-2 200 µm net equipped with a large non-filtering cod-end (10 l). Macrozooplankton organisms are removed using a 2000 µm net. After 24hours bottles are opened and water samples taken for O2 chemical analysis. Then the bottle content is filtered on pre-combusted preweighted CF/F filters, which are then dried at 60 C and weighted. Calculations are made as described by Ikeda et al. (2000). For the dissolved O2 determination, the samples were fixed immediately after collection and analysed with the Winkler method as modified by Carpenter (1965a and 1965b). Carbon specific CO2 respiration rate: O2 consumption rate was converted to CO2 production using a RQ value of 0.87 (Mayzaud et al. 2005). Conversion of mesozooplankton dry weight to carbon was done using the % of carbon content measured in the same station from the SESAME dataset of zooplankton biomass. Carbon specific NH4 excretion rate: Conversion of mesozooplankton dry weight to carbon was done using the % of carbon content measured in the same station from the SESAME dataset of zooplankton biomass. Carbon specific PO4 excretion rate: Conversion of mesozooplankton dry weight to carbon was done using the % of carbon content measured in the same station from the SESAME dataset of zooplankton biomass.

The Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, ca. 55 Ma) is an abrupt, profound perturbation of climate and the carbon cycle associated with a massive injection of isotopically light carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system. As such, it provides an analogue for understanding the interplay between phytoplankton and climate under modern anthropogenic global-warming conditions. However, the accompanying enhanced dissolution poses uncertainty on the reconstruction of the affected ecology and productivity. We present a high-resolution record of bulk isotopes and nannofossil absolute abundance from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1135 on the Kerguelen Plateau, Southern Indian Ocean to quantitatively constrain for the first time the influence of dissolution on paleoecological reconstruction. Our bulk-carbonate isotope record closely resembles that of the classic PETM site at ODP Site 690 on the opposite side of the Antarctic continent, and its correlation with those from ODP Sites 690, 1262 and 1263 records allows recognition of 14 precessional cycles upsection from the onset of the carbon isotopic excursion (CIE). This, together with a full range of common Discoasteraraneus and an abundance crossover between Fasciculithus and Zygrhablithusbijugatus, indicates the presence of the PETM at Site 1135, a poorly known record with calcareous fossils throughout the interval. The strong correlation between the absolute abundances of Chiasmolithus and coccolith assemblages reveals a dominant paleoecological signal in the poorly preserved fossil assemblages, while the influence of dissolution is only strong during the CIE. This suggests that r-selected taxa can preserve faithful ecological information even in the severely-altered assemblages studied here, and therefore provide a strong case for the application of nannofossils to paleoecological studies in better-preserved PETM sections. The inferred nannoplankton productivity drops abruptly at the CIE onset, but rapidly increases after the CIE peak, both of which may be driven by nutrient availability related to ocean stratification and vertical mixing due to changed sea-surface temperatures.

Mechanisms responsive to hypercapnia (elevated CO2 concentrations) and shaping branchial energy turnover were investigated in isolated perfused gills of two Antarctic Notothenioids (Gobionotothen gibberifrons, Notothenia coriiceps). Branchial oxygen consumption was measured under normo- versus hypercapnic conditions (10,000 ppm CO2) at high extracellular pH values. The fractional costs of ion regulation, protein and RNA synthesis in the energy budgets were determined using specific inhibitors. Overall gill energy turnover was maintained under pH compensated hypercapnia in both Antarctic species as well as in a temperate zoarcid (Zoarces viviparus). However, fractional energy consumption by the examined processes rose drastically in G. gibberifrons (100-180%), and to a lesser extent in N. coriiceps gills (7-56%). In conclusion, high CO2 concentrations under conditions of compensated acidosis induce cost increments in epithelial processes, however, at maintained overall rates of branchial energy turnover.
