Ferric trisacetylacetonate has been deposited within the zeolite MCM-41 and the product characterized by XRD and IR. In water at pH 7 it catalyzes the oxidation of phenol by H2O2, giving 58% conversion in 1 h at 50 degrees C: products are catechol (66%), hydroquinone (27%) and benzoquinone (7%). Other oxidants and solvents are much less effective. UV-VIS spectra suggest a radical substitution mechanism, and a pollution-free process for phenol hydroxylation is now possible.

Two groups of mixed oxides La2-xThxCuO4+/-lambda (0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.4) and La2-xSrxCuO4+/-lambda (0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) were prepared. Their crystal structures were studied with XRD and IR spectra, etc. Meanwhile, the average valence of Cu ions and nonstoichiometric oxygen (lambda) was measured through chemical analyses. Catalysis of the abovementioned mixed oxides was investigated in phenol hydroxylation, good results were obtained for some mixed oxides, and found that the catalysis of these mixed oxides have close relation with their defect structure and composition. A radical substitution mechanism was also proposed for this catalytic reaction.

The interaction between horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and the cryo-hydrogel was probed by using hydrazines which show high specificity of the reaction of the edge in the prosthetic heme of horseradish peroxidase. For comparison, the interaction of hydrazine with the horseradish peroxidase adsorbed on graphite electrode was also carried out by using steady-state response of the enzyme electrode and cyclic voltammetry. In order to obtain a proper explanation of the kinetic parameters for the enzymatic reaction, the theoretical expressions of I-max and K-M' in the Michaelis-Menten equation for the experimental system were provided. Oxidation-reduction properties of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) have been investigated by using direct electrochemical methods. Two successive separated distinct one-electron processes of HRP were obtained and the related physiological processes were described. The monolayer coverage of HRP at the electrode surface is about 50 pmol/cm(2). UV-Vis spectrophotometry and stable amperometry prove that the enzyme electrode possesses catalytic activity for H2O2 in the absence of a mediator and it might offer an opportunity to build the third generation of biosensors for analytes, such as H2O2, glucose and cholesterol etc. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds containing carbonate ion as the interlayer anion were prepared by coprecipitation under low supersaturation condition by mixing an aqueous solution of metal nitrates with an aqueous solutions of NaOH and Na2CO3, at room temperature, maintaining pH = 8-10 with vigorous stirring, Following the mixing, the resulting heavy slurry was aged at 353 K for 18 h with vigorous stirring, The precipitate was then filtered, washed several times with hot distilled water and dried in air at 353 K overnight, In this way, CuMI AlCO3-HTLcs and M-I AlCO3-HTLcs were synthesized and characterized by means of XRD and IR, The catalysis of the above mentioned HTLcs were investigated in the phenol hydroxylation with H2O2. The results indicated that all of the copper-containing HTLcs had a higher catalytic activity in the reaction, However, those catalysts that did not contain copper had no catalytic activity in this reaction, This means that copper was the active center in the phenol hydroxylation. Meanwhile, the mechanism was also proposed, which could be used to explain the main reason for higher activity for CuCuAlCO3-HTLcs in the phenol hydroxylation and the effect of Mg2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+ on activity of CuMI AlCO3-HTLcs.

Mixed oxides Ln(2)CuO(4+/-lambda)(Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) with K2NiF4 structure were prepared. Their crystal structures were studied with XRD and IR spectra. Meanwhile, the average valence of Cu ions and nonstoichiometric oxygen (lambda) were determined through chemical analyses. Catalysis of the above-mentioned mixed oxides in the phenol hydroxylation was investigated. Results show that the catalysis of these mixed oxides has close relation with their structures and composition. Substitution of A site atom in Ln(2)CuO(4+/-lambda) has a great influence on their catalysis in the phenol hydroxylation.

The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect of carbon black (CB) filled low density polyethylene (LDPE) composites was studied using electrical resistivity spectra, DSC, tensile mechanical analysis (TMA) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The three LDPEs used have a similar crystallinity and different melting index (MI). The experimental results indicate that the CB has no significant effect on the crystallinity and the long spacing of crystalline domains of LDPE. Based upon the TMA and dynamic elastic modulus spectra, it can be concluded that the PTC effect is related to the thermal expansion of the polymer matrix, and the NTC effect is caused by a decrease of the elastic modulus of the polymer at high temperatures. The NTC effect can be reduced by enhancing either the elastic modulus or the interaction between carbon black and matrix. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Monolayers of biological compounds including redox proteins and enzymes, and phospholipids have been immobilized on a gold electrode surface through self-assembling. These proteins and enzymes, such as cytochrome c, cytochrome c oxidase and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), immobilized covalently to the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid on a gold electrode, communicate directly electrons with the electrode surface without mediators and keep their physiological activities. The electron transfer of HRP with the gold electrode can also be mediated by the alkanethiol SAMs with electroactive group viologens on the gold electrode surface. All these direct electrochemistries of proteins and enzymes might offer an opportunity to build a third generation of biosensors without mediators for analytes, such as H2O2, glucose and cholesterol. Monensin and valinomycin have been incorporated into the bilayers on the gold electrode consisting of the SAMs of alkanethiol and a lipid monolayer, which have high selectivity for monovalent ions, and the resulting Na+ or K+ sensor has a wide linear range and high stability. These self-assembly systems provide a good mimetic model for studying the physiological function of a membrane and its associated enzyme. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Iron(II)-8-quinolino/MCM-41 is prepared. Its catalysis is studied in phenol hydroxylation using H2O2 (30%) as oxidant. The experiment shows that Iron(II)-8-quinolinol/MCM-41 has good catalytic activity and desired stability. Based on cyclic voltammetry, ESR, and UV-visible spectra studies of iron(II)-8-quinolinol complex in liquid phase, a radical substitution mechanism is proposed and used to demonstrate the experimental facts clearly. A stable, well-behaved self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of viologen-functionalized thiol was used to immobilize and electrically connect horseradish peroxidase (HRP) at gold electrode. Viologen groups in SAMs facilitated the electron transfer from the electrode to the protein active site so that HRP exhibited a quasi-reversible redox behavior. HRP adsorbed in the SAMs is very stable, and close to a monolayer with the surface coverage of 6.5 x 10(-11) mol/cm(2). The normal potential of HRP is -580 mV vs Ag/AgCl corresponding to ferri/ferro active center and the standard electron transfer rate constant is 3.41 s(-1) in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.1). This approach shows a great promise for designing enzyme electrodes with other redox proteins and practical use in tailoring a variety of amperometric biosensor devices. Superconductor mixed oxides were often used as catalysts at higher temperature in gas phase oxidations, and considered not suitable for lower temperature reactions in the liquid-solid phase; here the catalysis of YBa2Cu3O7+/-x and Y2BaCuO5+/-x in the phenol hydroxylation at lower temperature with H2O2 as oxygen donor was studied, and found that the superconductor YBa2Cu3O7+/-x, has no catalytic activity for phenol hydroxylation, but Y2BaCuO5+/-x does, even has better catalytic activity and stability than most previously reported ones. With the studies of catalysis of other simple metal oxides and perovskite-like mixed oxides, a radical substitution mechanism is proposed and the experimental facts are explained clearly, and draw a conclusion that the perovskite-like mixed oxides with (AO)(ABO(3)) and (AO)2(ABO(3)) structure have better catalytic activity than the simple perovskite oxides with (ABO(3))(3) structure alone, and (AO) structure unit is the key for the mixed oxides to have the phenol hydroxylation activity. No pollution of this process is very important for its further industrial application.

The interactions of lanthanide ions and the Ln-DTPA (DTPA = diethylenetriaminepentaacetate) complex with di palmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) bilayers are studied by 2D NOESY and FT-Raman spectroscopy. Proton NMR spectroscopic results show that lanthanide ions combine with phosphate groups in the polar region of the outer layer of DPPC liposomes, leading to the separation in chemical shift of the proton signal of N(CH3)(3) The conformational change of the O-C-C-N+ backbone from the gauche conformer to the trans one is not found; i.e., the orientation of the polar headgroup is still parallel to the surface of the bilayers. The Ln-DTPA complex at low concentration in a pH 7.4 solution localizes far away from bilayers and thereby has little effect on the structure of bilayers. The FT-Raman spectroscopic results indicate that lanthanide ions affect strongly the fluidity of acyl chains of DPPE bilayers while the Ln-DTPA complex affects it slightly.

Phenol hydroxylation catalyzed by iron(II)-1,10-phenanthroline is investigated through kinetics, ESR, W-Vis as well as cyclic voltammogram studies. The optimum reaction conditions are obtained for diphenols production. Radical substitution mechanism is first proposed to explain the effects of pH, reaction medium and other factors on the phenol hydroxylation with H2O2 as oxidant, and found that the coexisting of iron(II)-1,10-phenanthroline and iron(III)-1,10-phenanthroline is the key for phenol hydroxylation to occur with H2O2 as oxygen donor.
