Amino acid-based geochronological analyses were carried out on fossil mollusc shell and foraminifera from Unit 3.1, Cape Roberts Project core CRP-1. Ratios of D-alloIsoleucine to L-Isoleucine (D/L) were measured from 19 fossil samples using cation exchange High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) methods. Preliminary interpretation of these results suggest that Unit 3.1 contains carbonate fossils having multiple ages. The interpreted ages have a bimodal distribution between ~220 Ka (Quaternary) and ~2.4 Ma (Pliocene). However, these results lack a comprehensive regional and taxonomic context for amino acid studies in Antarctica and therefore should be regarded as preliminary age estimates of fossil shell ages.

Site 40 was located by the JOIDES Pacific Advisory Panel in the region between the Molokai and Clarion Fracture Zones with the objective of recovering a continuous sediment core for the paleontologic and biostratigraphic study of the variation in sediment components at the transition between the North Pacific gyral and the Equatorial Current System.

Site 39 was located in the region between the Pioneer and Murray Fracture Zones, with the objective of recovering a continuous sediment core for paleontologic and stratigraphic study of the longitudinal variations in sediment components in the eastern Pacific. This site was selected, together with the adjacent ones in the north-south line along 140°W, to provide information on the geologic history of the North Pacific gyral, insofar as this might be recorded in the sediments.

Site 41 marks the transition from the North Pacific gyral to the Equatorial Current System. The JOIDES Pacific Advisory Panel selected a site at this latitude along the longitudinal profile of 140°W in order to obtain information on the history of migrations of these current systems.

The JOIDES Pacific Advisory Panel proposed Site 37 to meet two principal objectives: to determine the significance of the magnetic anomaly pattern, and the longitudinal profile of the sediment sequence in the eastern Pacific. Site 37 was to be located on the same magnetic anomaly as was Site 33 (#10, 32 million years age), for comparison across the intervening Mendocino Fracture Zone. As basement had not been reached at Site 33, this objective could not be met specifically. However, sediment comparison across the fracture zone was possible.

<p>In this paper, Sr<sub>2</sub>Fe<sub>1.5</sub>Mo<sub>0.4</sub>Nb<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>6-δ</sub> (SFMNb)-xSm<sub>0.2</sub>Ce<sub>0.8</sub>O<sub>2-δ</sub> (SDC) (x = 0, 20, 30, 40, 50 wt%) composite cathode materials were synthesized by a one-pot combustion method to improve the electrochemical performance of SFMNb cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). The fabrication of composite cathodes by adding SDC to SFMNb is conducive to providing extended electrochemical reaction zones for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrates that SFMNb is chemically compatible with SDC electrolytes at temperature up to 1100 °C. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicates that the SFMNb-SDC composite cathodes have a porous network nanostructure as well as the single phase SFMNb. The conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of the composite cathodes decrease with the increased content of SDC, while the electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) exhibits that SFMNb-40SDC composite cathode has optimal electrochemical performance with low polarization resistance (R<sub>p</sub>) on the La<sub>0.9</sub>Sr<sub>0.1</sub>Ga<sub>0.8</sub>Mg<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> electrolyte. The R<sub>p</sub> of the SFMNb-40SDC composite cathode is about 0.047 Ω cm<sup>2</sup> at 800 °C in air. A single cell with SFMNb-40SDC cathode also displays favorable discharge performance, whose maximum power density is 1.22 W cm<sup>-2</sup> at 800 °C. All results indicate that SFMNb-40SDC composite material is a promising cathode candidate for IT-SOFCs.</p>

2-(4-Amino-3-methylphenyl)-5-fluorobenzothiazole (5F 203) and related compounds are a series of anti-cancer candidate pharmaceuticals (Table 1.), that have been shown to activate the AhR. We show that these compounds are high affinity ligands for the rat AhR, but a quantitative assay for their ability to induce CYP1A1 RNA in H4IIEC3 cells, a measure of activation of the AhR, showed a poor relationship between affinity for the AhR and ability to induce CYP1A1 RNA. 5F 203, an agonist with low potency, was able to antagonise the induction of CYP1A1 RNA by TCDD, while IH 445, a potent agonist, did not antagonise the induction of CYP1A1 RNA by TCDD, and Schild analysis confirmed 5F 203 to be a potent antagonist of the induction of CYP1A1 RNA by TCDD in H4IIEC3 cells. In contrast, several benzothiazoles show potent induction of CYP1A1 RNA in human MCF-7 cells, and 5F 203 is unable to detectably antagonise the induction of CYP1A1 RNA in MCF-7 cells, showing a species difference in antagonism. Evaluation of the antiproliferative activity of benzothiazoles showed that the ability to agonise the AhR correlated with growth inhibition both in H4IIEC3 cells for a variety of benzothiazoles, and between H4IIEC3 and MCF-7 cells for 5F 203, suggesting an important role of agonism of the AhR in the anti-proliferative activity of benzothiazoles.

En el campo educativo, hablar de cambios es intrÃnseco a la labor, a la generación de nuevos espacios de aprendizaje y de tiempos de conciencia social. Frente a los retos y la continuidad de la lÃnea del tiempo, las sociedades que van de la mano de la educación y la formación, se tornan grandes, dinámicas y diversas. Diversidad que en el Ecuador es un hecho palpable en cada rostro, en cada aroma, en cada tramo y colorida creencia humana, mágica o efÃmera que ronda a los que nos llamamos ecuatorianos. Este ha sido siempre nuestro motivo de andar…la diversidad. Porque somos miles en uno desde la montaña hasta el mar. La forma de sentir al paÃs es una de las formas de aprendizaje que nos ubica en el lugar que amamos y al cual sentimos pertenecer, y en esa pertenencia se marcan los primeros distanciamientos del otro. Nos consideramos propios y ajenos, sin dejar de buscar nuestro espacio, nuestras formas de amar y de crecer dÃa a dÃa. Se nos convierte en lengua y comida, todo aquello que vamos tomando y se nos va ofreciendo alrededor. Casi se convierte en una búsqueda esencial, el derecho a ser quienes sentimos ser y revelarnos ante las etiquetas y márgenes. En esta lucha interna, la formación de valores se convierte en estrategia necesaria para dejar detrás las oscuras huellas de la soberbia y trazar guÃas que acerquen lo común de los seres humanos. Las formas propias de vida y la herencia que un dÃa fueron motivo de disputa de poder y ubicación polÃtico – social, hoy deben transformarse en recursos para entablar relaciones de armonÃa y bien común. Es en este marco en el que, los nuevos procesos polÃticos, económicos y sociales del Ecuador han dado paso a la valoración del ser humano - y por lo tanto a su desarrollo - , como una forma de lograr una base social dispuesta a enfrentar retos profundos hacia la superación individual y colectiva...

A fitoterapia e a homeopatia são consideradas as duas principais práticas não hegemônicas. A temática introdutória desta Unidade apresenta o contexto nacional e internacional que levou nosso paÃs a adotar polÃticas públicas para inserção de práticas integrativas e complementares no sistema de saúde. O conteúdo avança de forma mais especÃfica, para a história da criação das polÃticas e as principais diretrizes que fomentaram o desenvolvimento e a inserção de tais práticas terapêuticas não hegemônicas no SUS, dentro do contexto da assistência farmacêutica. A discussão evolui para as PolÃticas públicas estabelecidas para o setor (PNPIC e PNPMF) e ao final do conteúdo, converge para uma abordagem sobre as estratégias para implantação das práticas não hegemônicas nos serviços de saúde.

Excessive occlusal surface wear can result in occlusal disharmony, functional and esthetic impairment. As a therapeutic approach, conventional single crowns have been proposed, but this kind of treatment is complex, highly invasive and expensive. This case report describes the clinical outcomes of an alternative minimally invasive treatment based on direct adhesive-pin retained restorations. A 64-year-old woman with severely worn dentition, eating problems related to missing teeth and generalized tooth hypersensitivity was referred for treatment. Proper treatment planning based on the diagnostic wax-up simulation was used to guide the reconstruction of maxillary anterior teeth with direct composite resin over self-threading dentin pins. As the mandibular remaining teeth were extremely worn, a tooth-supported overdenture was installed. A stabilization splint was also used to protect the restorations. This treatment was a less expensive alternative to full-mouth rehabilitation with positive esthetic and functional outcomes after 1.5 years of follow-up.

High levels of substrate-based 1,5-stereoinduction are obtained in the boron-mediated aldol reactions of beta-oxygenated methyl ketones with achiral and chiral aldehydes. Remote induction from the boron enolates gives the 1,5-anti adducts, with the enolate pi-facial selectivity critically dependent upon the nature of the beta-alkoxy protecting group. This 1,5-anti aldol methodology has been strategically employed in the total synthesis of several natural products. At present, the origin of the high level of 1,5-anti induction obtained with the boron enolates is unclear, although a model based on a hydrogen bonding between the alkoxy oxygen and the formyl hydrogen has been recently proposed.
