Investigation of manganese nodules from the Malvinas (Falkland) Plateau

Manganese nodules occurring within marine sediments of presumably Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene age from cores obtained by the Argentine oceanographic vessel ARA Islas Orcadas in 1977 on the Malvinas (Falkland) Plateau and neighbouring Scotia Sea were studied with the aim of comparing them with other fossil nodules found on the mainland of Argentina that were also ascribed to the marine environment. After optical mineralogical, chemical, X-ray and trace element analysis, the studied "nodules" proved to be actually wacke clasts cemented by manganese oxides with a high Fe/Mn ratio corresponding to a continental environment. The studied "nodules" thus differ from the Argentine mainland nodules and are supposed to have been transported from continental environments and then deposited in the marine realms. The wacke clasts became then nuclei for the deposition of the marine manganese oxides of the coatings. The proportion of trace elements, which is high, suggests the growth of the nodules in the marine environment.

Strength and attrition resistance of agglomerates and particulate coatings

The mechanical properties of a range of agglomerates and particulate coatings have been measured using a nanoindenter. The effect of formulation properties such as powder and binder properties on coating hardness is described. An attempt is also made to measure the fracture hardness with the nanoindenter. The use of indentation technology to measure fundamental agglomerate properties is critically analysed. Based on the indentation measurements and standard attrition test results, the coating hardness is found closely related to the attrition rate under standard conditions and can be used to screen different powder/binder formulations. Preparation and catalytic properties of ZrO2-Al2O3 composite oxide supported nickel catalysts for methane reforming with carbon dioxide

ZrO2-Al2O3 composite oxides and supported Ni catalysts were prepared, and characterized by N-2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The catalytic performance and carbon deposition was also investigated. This mesoporous composite oxide is shown to be a promising catalyst support. An increase in the catalytic activity and stability of methane and carbon dioxide reforming reaction was resulted from the zirconia addition, especially at 5wt% ZrO2 content. The Ni catalyst supported ZrO2-Al2O3 has a strong resistance to sintering and the carbon deposition in a relatively long-term reaction.

Preparation and characterization of copper catalysts supported on mesoporous Al2O3 nanofibers for N2O reduction to N2

A series of mesoporous Al2O3 samples with different porous structures and phases were prepared and used as supports for Cu/Al2O3 catalysts. These catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, NMR, TGA, XRD, and UV - vis spectroscopic techniques and tested for the catalytic reaction of N2O decomposition. The activity increased with the increasing calcination temperatures of supports from 450 to 900 degreesC; however, a further increase in calcination temperature up to 1200 degreesC resulted in a significant reduction in activity. Characterization revealed that the calcination temperatures of supports influenced the porous structures and phases of the supports, which in turn affected the dispersions, phases, and activities of the impregnated copper catalyst. The different roles of surface spinel, bulk CuAl2O4, and bulk CuO is clarified for N2O catalytic decomposition. Two mechanism schemes were thus proposed to account for the varying activities of different catalysts.

Phase-equilibrium data and liquidus for the system "MnO"-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 at Al2O3/SiO2 of 0.55 and 0.65

Phase-equilibrium data and liquidus isotherms for the system MnO-CaO-(Al2O3 + SiO2) at silicomanganese alloy saturation have been determined in the temperature range of 1373 to 1723 K. The results are presented in the form of the pseudoternary sections MnO-CaO-(Al2O3 + SiO2) with Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratios of 0.55 and 0.65. The primary-phase fields have been identified in this range of conditions.

Reducing the height of a circular array of monopoles using top hats and dielectric coatings

Using a Radial Guide Field Matching Method, an investigation is performed into reducing the height of an electronically steered circular array of monopole antennas composed of a central active element surrounded by passive elements being either short- or open-circuited. It is shown that a considerable height reduction can be achieved using top hats attached to monopoles ends and by applying dielectric coating underneath the top hats. The trade-off in achieving height reduction is narrower impedance bandwidth.
