The fabrication of micro-channels in single-mode optical fibers is demonstrated using focused femtosecond laser processing and chemical etching. Straight line micro-channels are achieved based on a simple technique which overcomes limitations imposed by the fiber curved surface. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

A frequency-modulated continuous-wave technique is used to detect the presence of frequency shifts in the Rayleigh-backscattered light in a single-mode optical fiber as a result of a changing temperature. The system is able to detect a rate of temperature change of 0.014 K/s, when a 20-cm length of fiber is heated. The system is also able to demonstrate a spatial resolution of better than 15 cm.

In this paper, we described an efficient theoretical approach to determine the integral characteristics such as Mode Field Diameter (MFD) and V-parameter of the Weakly guiding waveguides. To test the described method we measured MFD for the commercially available step index single mode fibre with known parameters. The results of these measurements are presented for two different wavelengths. It is worth noting that the developed approach implies infinite cladding, thus care should be taken to avoid influence of finiteness of cladding when MFD compares to cladding diamete.

In this paper, we compare the nonlinear Shannon capacity of few-mode fibre systems operating with spatial-temporal digital signal processing to the nonlinear Shannon capacity of single-mode fibre systems operating with spectral-temporal digital signal processing. Combining these results with estimates of digital signal processing complexity for each option offers valuable insights to system designers.

We design a Raman fibre laser with a short cavity providing narrow-band generation. The laser is based on a commercial single-mode fibre (980-HP) span of 12 m length. The laser generates up to 11 W of intracavity power. Even at high generation power, the laser spectrum is narrow (less than 200 pm) - several times narrower than for conventional Raman fibre lasers based on longer fibres. The intensity dynamics reveals indications of mode correlations. © 2014 Astro Ltd.

The behavior of a temperature self-compensating, fiber, long-period grating (LPG) device is studied. This device consists of a single 325-µm-period LPG recorded across two sections of a single-mode B-Ge-codoped fiber—one section bare and the other coated with a 1-µm thickness of Ag. This structure generates two attenuation bands associated with the eighth and ninth cladding modes, which are spectrally close together (~60 nm). The attenuation band associated with the Ag-coated section is unaffected by changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium and can be used to compensate for the temperature of the bare-fiber section. The sensor has a resolution of ±1.0 × 10-3 for the refractive index and ±0.3 °C for the temperature. The effect of bending on the spectral characteristics of the two attenuation bands was found to be nonlinear, with the Ag-coated LPG having the greater sensitivity.

Transmission of a 73.7 Tb/s (96x3x256-Gb/s) DP-16QAM mode-division- multiplexed signal over 119km of few-mode fiber transmission line incorporating an inline multi mode EDFA and a phase plate based mode (de-)multiplexer is demonstrated. Data-aided 6x6 MIMO digital signal processing was used to demodulate the signal. The total demonstrated net capacity, taking into account 20% of FEC-overhead and 7.5% additional overhead (Ethernet and training sequences), is 57.6 Tb/s, corresponding to a spectral efficiency of 12 bits/s/Hz. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

Fiber Bragg gratings can be used for monitoring different parameters in a wide variety of materials and constructions. The interrogation of fiber Bragg gratings traditionally consists of an expensive and spacious peak tracking or spectrum analyzing unit which needs to be deployed outside the monitored structure. We present a dynamic low-cost interrogation system for fiber Bragg gratings which can be integrated with the fiber itself, limiting the fragile optical in- and outcoupling interfaces and providing a compact, unobtrusive driving and read-out unit. The reported system is based on an embedded Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) which is tuned dynamically at 1 kHz and an embedded photodiode. Fiber coupling is provided through a dedicated 45° micromirror yielding a 90° in-the-plane coupling and limiting the total thickness of the fiber coupled optoelectronic package to 550 µm. The red-shift of the VCSEL wavelength is providing a full reconstruction of the spectrum with a range of 2.5 nm. A few-mode fiber with fiber Bragg gratings at 850 nm is used to prove the feasibility of this low-cost and ultra-compact interrogation approach.

We examine the response of a pulse pumped quantum dot laser both experimentally and numerically. As the maximum of the pump pulse comes closer to the excited-state threshold, the output pulse shape becomes unstable and leads to dropouts. We conjecture that these instabilities result from an increase of the linewidth enhancement factor α as the pump parameter comes close to the excitated state threshold. In order to analyze the dynamical mechanism of the dropout, we consider two cases for which the laser exhibits either a jump to a different single mode or a jump to fast intensity oscillations. The origin of these two instabilities is clarified by a combined analytical and numerical bifurcation diagram of the steady state intensity modes.

We have experimentally demonstrated an active loading sensor system based on a fiber ring laser with singlepolarization output using an intra-cavity 45°-tilted fiber grating. When the laser cavity fiber is subjected to loading, the laser output is encoded with the loading information that can be measured and monitored by a standard power meter. The achieved loading sensitivity is 0.033/kg • m-1 and 0.042/kg • m-1 for two different interaction lengths. The experimental results clearly show that such a single-polarization fiber laser may be commercially developed into a low-cost, high-sensitivity loading sensor system.

We measure the radial profile of the photoelastic coefficient C(r) in single-mode polymer optical fibers (POFs), and we determine the evolution of C(r) after annealing the fibers at temperatures from 40°C to 80°C. We demonstrate that C(r) in the fibers drawn from a preform without specific thermal pre-treatment changes and converges to values between 1.2 and 1.6×10-12 Pa-1 following annealing at 80°C. The annealed fibers display a smoothened radial profile of C(r) and a lowered residual birefringence. In contrast, the mean value of C(r) of the fiber drawn from a preform that has been pre-annealed remains constant after our annealing process and is significantly higher, i.e., 4×10-12 Pa-1. The annealing process decreases the residual birefringence to a lower extent as well. These measurements indicate the impact of annealing on the thermal stability of the photoelastic coefficient of POFs, which is an essential characteristic in view of developing POF-based thermomechanical sensors.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of linear mode coupling on the efficiency of intermodal four-wave mixing and on the group delay statistics in few-mode fibres. The investigation will include not only the weak or strong linear coupling regimes, but also the transition region between them, the intermediate coupling regime. This analysis will allow to assess the level of coupling strength require to suppress the nonlinear distortion in a few-mode fibre below the level of distortion for single-mode propagation without mode coupling.
