Dye incorporation in polyphosphate gels: synthesis and theoretical calculations

ABSTRACT: In this work we described theoretical calculations on the electronic structure and optical properties of the dyes crystal violet and malachite green based in semiempirical methods (Parametric Method 3 and Intermediate Neglect of Differential Overlap / Spectroscopic - Configuration Interaction) and the synthesis of a new hybrid material based upon the incorporation of these dyes in an aluminum polyphosphate gel network. The samples are nearly transparent, free-standing thick films. The optical properties of the entrapped dyes are sensitive to chemical changes within the matrix caused either by gel aging or external stimulli such as exposition to acidic and basic vapors that can percolate within the matrix. Our theoretical modeling is in good agreement with the experimental results for the dyes.

Investigação das características I x V e C x V de NCPS puro, com nitrogênio substitucional carregado (-1 e +1) e com grupos doador (NO2)-aceitador (NH2) através de métodos derivados de hartree-fock

Neste trabalho, fizemos uma investigação sobre o estudo teórico das características I x V e C x V de Nanotubo Carbono de Parede Simples (NCPS) puro, com Nitrogênio substitucional carregado com cargas -1 (caracterizando um indicativo de dopagem tipo n) e +1 (caracterizando um indicativo de dopagem tipo p) e na presença de grupos doador (NO₂)-aceitador (NH₂), através da simulação computacional do estado fundamental de NCPS, bem como de sua estrutura eletrônica e propriedades ópticas, utilizando parametrizações semi-empíricas AM1 (Austin Mudel 1) e ZINDO/S-ClS (Zerner´s lntermediate Neglect of Differential Orbital/Spectroscopic - Cunfiguration lnteraction Single) derivadas da Teoria de Hartree-Fock baseada em técnicas de química quântica. Por meio deste modelo teórico analisamos as propriedades ópticas e eletrônicas, de maior interesse para esses materiais, a fim de se entender a melhor forma de interação desses materiais na fabricação de dispositivos eletrônicos, tais como TECs (Transistores de Efeito de Campo) ou em aplicações em optoeletrônica tais como DEL (Dispositivo Emissor de Luz). Observamos que NCPS com Nitrogênio substitucional apresentam defeitos conformacionais do tipo polarônico. Fizemos as curvas dos espectros UV-visível de Absorção para NCPS armchair e zigzag puro, com Nitrogênio substitucional carregado com cargas (-1 e +1) e na presença de grupos doador (NO₂)-aceitador (NH₂), quando perturbados por intensidades diferentes de campo elétrico. Verificamos que em NCPS zigzag ao aumentarmos a intensidade do campo elétrico, suas curvas sofrem grandes perturbações. Obtivemos as curvas p x E, I x V e C x V para esses NCPS, concluímos que NCPS armchair possui comportamento resistor, pois suas curvas são lineares e zigzag possui comportamento semelhante ao dos dispositivos eletrônicos importantes para o avanço tecnológico. Assim, nossos resultados estão de bom acordo com os resultados experimentais e teóricos de NCPS puro e com Nitrogênio encontrados na literatura.

Ab Initio correlated all electron Dirac-Fock calculations for eka-francium fluoride (E119F)

Resultados obtidos por cálculos Dirac-Fock correlacionados de 4 componentes para o fluoreto do elemento E119 (Eka-Frâncio) com base estável e precisa, livre de prolapso variacional, são reportados neste trabalho. No nível CCSD(T), a distância de equilíbrio R_e, frequência harmônica ω_e e energia de dissociação D_e são 2,432 Å, 354,97 cm_-1 e 116,92 kcal mol_-1, respectivamente. Também são reportados base livre de prolapso variacional de 4 componentes para o elemento 119, uma curva analítica de energia potencial precisa e o espectro vibracional a partir dos dados obtidos no nível CCSD(T). Nossos resultados sugerem que a molécula E119F deva ser menos iônica que seus fluoretos alcalinos homólogos mais leves, em contraste com o senso químico comum baseado nas propriedades periódicas - era de se esperar nesta molécula a ligação química mais iônica possível. Também encontramos que a correção do tipo modelo de carga para negligenciar as integrais do tipo SS resulta em erros insignificantes e acelera os cálculos cerca de 3 vezes no nível CCSD(T) e cerca de 4 vezes no nível DFT/B3LYP.

A new clinical sign probably associated to left hemiplegia with left hemineglect syndrome: the crossed legs

Objetivo : Descrever um novo sinal clínico associado à síndrome de negligência unilateral (SNU) em pacientes com acidente vascular cerebral isquêmico (AVCi). Método : Em 150 pacientes com acidente vascular cerebral isquêmico, foram realizadas tomografias de crânio e aplicada a National Institute of Health Stroke Scale. Aqueles pacientes com lesões vasculares à direita, hemiplegia esquerda e perna direita persistentemente cruzada sobre a esquerda, foram submetidos a testes específicos para SNU. Trinta pacientes também com lesões vasculares à direita, hemiplegia esquerda, porém sem evidências de permanecerem com as pernas cruzadas, foram submetidos aos mesmos testes clínicos. Resultados : Entre 150 pacientes com AVCi, 9 apresentaram lesão vascular cerebral à direita, hemiplegia esquerda e tendência em permanecer com a perna direita cruzada sobre a esquerda. Em 8 deles, testes específicos realizados nos primeiros dias de internação, confirmaram SNU à esquerda. Um paciente morreu antes que os testes pudessem ser aplicados. Dos 30 pacientes que não cruzaram as pernas, os testes foram normais em 20. Dez pacientes apresentaram alterações mínimas, insuficientes para o diagnóstico de SNU. Conclusão : A perna direita cruzada sobre a esquerda pode representar um novo sinal semiológico associado à hemiplegia esquerda e SNU à esquerda.

Negligência unilateral pós-acidente vascular encefálico: atuação da Terapia Ocupacional

Unilateral Neglect Syndrome is one of the consequences of cerebral vascular accident (CVA) generally following right parietal lobe lesion, leading to the impairment of perceptive visual, spatial and attention functions. The patient affected does not realize the environmental stimuli on the contralesional hemibody. Occupational therapy plays an important role in caring for this patient, seeking the recovery of perception, attention and social engagement. This study aimed to describe and evaluate the results of occupational therapy intervention and treatment in a single Unilateral Neglect Syndrome post CVA patient. Data were obtained from a survey of the patient’s medical records and interviews of his therapist and caretaker. The analysis of the patient’s medical records and his therapist’s report showed that the patient responded satisfactorily to treatment, presenting a decrease of the left unilateral neglect at the end of the study period. The favorable outcome of the patient outlined the relevance of evaluating the effects of Occupational Therapy interventions for clinical unilateral neglect syndrome.

The importance of sensing one's movement in the world for the sense of personal identity

Within philosophy and cognitive science, the focus in relation to the problem of personal identity has been almost exclusively on the brain. We submit that the resulting neglect of the body and of bodily movements in the world has been detrimental in understanding how organisms develop a sense of identity. We examine the importance of sensing one’s own movements for the development of a basic, nonconceptual sense of self. More specifically, we argue that the origin of the sense of self stems from the sensitivity to spontaneous movements. Based on this, the organism develops a sense of “I move” and, finally, a sense of “I can move”. Proprioception and kinesthesis are essential in this development. At the same time, we argue against the traditional dichotomy between so-called external and internal senses, agreeing with Gibson that perception of the self and of the environment invariably go together. We discuss a traditional distinction between two aspects of bodily self: the body sense and the body image. We suggest that they capture different aspects of the sense of self. We argue that especially the body sense is of great importance to our nonconceptual sense of self. Finally, we attempt to draw some consequences for research in cognitive science, specifically in the area of robotics, by examining a case of missing proprioception. We make a plea for robots to be equipped not just with external perceptual and motor abilities but also with a sense of proprioception. This, we submit, would constitute one further step towards understanding creatures acting in the world with a sense of themselves.

This work presents an intervention at the Guaratinguetá Railway Station and its surroundings, including this area in the urban context, at this moment isolated of the activities and citizen attentions, offering new activities on this commercial area. The selected area finds itself in a state of neglect and forgetfulness from the urban relations. Located between the periphery of the commercial center and the Paraiba do Sul River, the correlation is tension between the advancement of shops, the railway line, and the natural barrier of the Paraiba River. On the context of these limits, the railroad and the river stand as barriers for the center expansion and the flows that connect the old part of the town with the new part, which is growing and is called “post-city river”. These barriers have relegating properties around them to isolation, despite being located in the center. The area choice and this intervention seeks to break this isolation and the barrier flow, linking areas of opposite sides to form a leak through the barrier of the railway line. The pedestrian flow is prioritized in the project, this flow will be attracted by the program offered and by the new created areas, increasing the space utilization by users and breaking the isolation of urban activities. And entering the area in the context of life of city residents. The attraction of these new flows will be through the implementation of a Cultural Center, supplying a lack of city by spaces that offer this type of activity. Its implementation aims to attract and modify the activities of these spaces and the surrounding areas, one side facing the commercial center, and another facing the river, linking this two sides at the same time that this link provides the expansion of distance traveled and known

The current financial and economic crisis: empirical and methodological issues

In this paper we describe the main causes of the recent financial crisis as a result of many theoretical, methodological, and practical shortcomings mostly according to heterodox, but also including some important orthodox economists. At theoretical level, there are problems concerning teaching and using economic models with overly unrealistic assumptions. In the methodological front, we find the unsuspected shadow of Milton Friedman’s ‘unrealisticism of assumptions’ thesis lurking behind the construction of this kind of models and the widespread neglect of methodological issues. Of course, the most evident shortcomings are at the practical level: (i) huge interests of the participants in the financial markets (banks, central bankers, regulators, rating agencies mortgage brokers, politicians, governments, executives, economists, etc. mainly in the US, Canada and Europe, but also in Japan and the rest of the world), (ii) in an almost completely free financial and economic market, that is, one (almost) without any regulation or supervision, (iii) decision-taking upon some not well regarded qualities, like irresponsibility, ignorance, and inertia; and (iv) difficulties to understand the current crisis as well as some biases directing economic rescues by governments. Following many others, we propose that we take this episode as an opportunity to reflect on, and hopefully redirect, economic theory and practice.
