Current low-level networking abstractions on modern operating systems are commonly implemented in the kernel to provide sufficient performance for general purpose applications. However, it is desirable for high performance applications to have more control over the networking subsystem to support optimizations for their specific needs. One approach is to allow networking services to be implemented at user-level. Unfortunately, this typically incurs costs due to scheduling overheads and unnecessary data copying via the kernel. In this paper, we describe a method to implement efficient application-specific network service extensions at user-level, that removes the cost of scheduling and provides protected access to lower-level system abstractions. We present a networking implementation that, with minor modifications to the Linux kernel, passes data between "sandboxed" extensions and the Ethernet device without copying or processing in the kernel. Using this mechanism, we put a customizable networking stack into a user-level sandbox and show how it can be used to efficiently process and forward data via proxies, or intermediate hosts, in the communication path of high performance data streams. Unlike other user-level networking implementations, our method makes no special hardware requirements to avoid unnecessary data copies. Results show that we achieve a substantial increase in throughput over comparable user-space methods using our networking stack implementation.

In this paper we examine a number of admission control and scheduling protocols for high-performance web servers based on a 2-phase policy for serving HTTP requests. The first "registration" phase involves establishing the TCP connection for the HTTP request and parsing/interpreting its arguments, whereas the second "service" phase involves the service/transmission of data in response to the HTTP request. By introducing a delay between these two phases, we show that the performance of a web server could be potentially improved through the adoption of a number of scheduling policies that optimize the utilization of various system components (e.g. memory cache and I/O). In addition, to its premise for improving the performance of a single web server, the delineation between the registration and service phases of an HTTP request may be useful for load balancing purposes on clusters of web servers. We are investigating the use of such a mechanism as part of the Commonwealth testbed being developed at Boston University.

Traditional motion capture techniques, for instance, those employing optical technology, have long been used in the area of rehabilitation, sports medicine and performance analysis, where accurately capturing bio-mechanical data is of crucial importance. However their size, cost, complexity and lack of portability mean that their use is often impractical. Low cost MEMS inertial sensors when combined and assembled into a Wireless Inertial Measurement Unit (WIMU) present a possible solution for low cost and highly portable motion capture. However due to the large variability inherent to MEMS sensors, such a system would need extensive characterization to calibrate each sensor and ensure good quality data capture. A completely calibrated WIMU system would allow for motion capture in a wider range of real-world, non-laboratory based applications. Calibration can be a complex task, particularly for newer, multi-sensing range capable inertial sensors. As such we present an automated system for quickly and easily calibrating inertial sensors in a packaged WIMU, demonstrating some of the improvements in accuracy attainable.

For efficient use of metal oxides, such as MnO(2) and RuO(2), in pseudocapacitors and other electrochemical applications, the poor conductivity of the metal oxide is a major problem. To tackle the problem, we have designed a ternary nanocomposite film composed of metal oxide (MnO(2)), carbon nanotube (CNT), and conducting polymer (CP). Each component in the MnO(2)/CNT/CP film provides unique and critical function to achieve optimized electrochemical properties. The electrochemical performance of the film is evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, and constant-current charge/discharge cycling techniques. Specific capacitance (SC) of the ternary composite electrode can reach 427 F/g. Even at high mass loading and high concentration of MnO(2) (60%), the film still showed SC value as high as 200 F/g. The electrode also exhibited excellent charge/discharge rate and good cycling stability, retaining over 99% of its initial charge after 1000 cycles. The results demonstrated that MnO(2) is effectively utilized with assistance of other components (fFWNTs and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) in the electrode. Such ternary composite is very promising for the next generation high performance electrochemical supercapacitors.

The demands of the process of engineering design, particularly for structural integrity, have exploited computational modelling techniques and software tools for decades. Frequently, the shape of structural components or assemblies is determined to optimise the flow distribution or heat transfer characteristics, and to ensure that the structural performance in service is adequate. From the perspective of computational modelling these activities are typically separated into: • fluid flow and the associated heat transfer analysis (possibly with chemical reactions), based upon Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology • structural analysis again possibly with heat transfer, based upon finite element analysis (FEA) techniques.

Gel filtration on soft gels has been employed for over 40 years for the separation, desalting and molecular weight estimation of peptides and proteins. Technical improvements have given rise to high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) on rigid supports, giving more rapid run times and increased resolution. Initially, these packings were more suitable for the separation of proteins than of peptides, but supports that operate in the fractionation range
