Palladium has a significant track record as a catalyst for a range of oxidation reactions and it has been explored for the selective oxidation of alcohols for many years. This chapter focuses on the two main types of aerobic Pd catalysts: heterogeneous and ligand-modulated systems. In the case of heterogeneous systems, the mechanistic understanding of these systems and the use of in situ and operando techniques to obtain this knowledge are discussed. The current state-of-the-art is also summarized in terms of catalytic performance and substrate scope for heterogeneous Pd-based catalysts. In terms of ligand-modulated systems, leading examples of molecular Pd(ii) catalysts which undergo direct O2 coupled turnover are highlighted. The catalyst performance for such catalysts is exemplified and mechanistic understanding for these molecular systems is discussed.

<p>Herein, we present a facile method for the formation of monodispersed metal nanoparticles (NPs) at room temperature from M(III)Cl3 (with M = Au, Ru, Mn, Fe or V) in different media based on <em>N</em>,<em>N</em>-dimethylformamide (DMF) or water solutions containing a protic ionic liquid (PIL), namely the octylammonium formate (denoted OAF) or the bis(2-ethyl-hexyl)ammonium formate (denoted BEHAF). These two PILs present different structures and redox-active structuring properties that influence their interactions with selected molecular compounds (DMF or water), as well as the shape and the size of formed metal NPs in these solutions. Herein, the physical properties, such as the thermal, transport and micellar properties, of investigated PIL solutions were firstly investigated in order to understand the relation between PILs structure and their properties in solutions with DMF or water. The formation of metal NPs in these solutions was then characterized by using UVâvis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. From our investigations, it appears that the PILs structure and their aggregation pathways in selected solvents affect strongly the formation, growths, the shape and the size of metal NPs. In fact by using this approach, the shape-/size-controlled metal NPs can be generated under mild condition. This approach suggests also a wealth of potential for these designer nanomaterials within the biomedical, materials, and catalysis communities by using designer and safer media based on PILs.</p>

The field of high atomic number nanoparticle radiosensitising agents is reviewed. After a brief discussion of the new mode of physicochemical action implied by irradiation of high atomic number nanoparticles embedded in biological systems, a series of exemplars are discussed. Silver-, gadolinium- and gold-based nanoparticles are discussed in order of increasing atomic number with functionalisation strategies being outlined. In vitro and in vivo evidence for radio-enhancement and the mechanisms attributed to the increased biological effect are discussed.

<p>The peroxometalate-based polymer immobilized ionic liquid phase catalyst [PO4{WO(O-2)(2)}(4)]@PIILP has been prepared by anion exchange of ring opening metathesis-derived pyrrolidinium-decorated norbornene/ cyclooctene copolymer and shown to be a remarkably efficient system for the selective oxidation of sulfides under mild conditions. A cartridge packed with a mixture of [PO4{WO(O-2)(2)}(4)]@PIILP and silica operated as a segmented or continuous flow process and gave good conversions and high selectivity for either sulfoxide (92% in methanol at 96% conversion for a residence time of 4 min) or sulfone (96% in acetonitrile at 96% conversion for a residence time of 15 min). The immobilized catalyst remained active for 8 h under continuous flow operation with a stable activity/selectivity profile that allowed 6.5 g of reactant to be processed (TON = 46 428) while a single catalyst cartridge could be used for the consecutive oxidation of multiple substrates giving activity-selectivity profiles that matched those obtained with fresh catalyst.</p>

This work deals with the optical properties of supported noble metal nanoparticles, which are dominated by the so-called Mie resonance and are strongly dependent on the particlesâ morphology. For this reason, characterization and control of the dimension of these systems are desired in order to optimize their applications. Gold and silver nanoparticles have been produced on dielectric supports like quartz glass, sapphire and rutile, by the technique of vapor deposition under ultra-high vacuum conditions. During the preparation, coalescence is observed as an important mechanism of cluster growth. The particles have been studied in situ by optical transmission spectroscopy and ex situ by atomic force microscopy. It is shown that the morphology of the aggregates can be regarded as oblate spheroids. A theoretical treatment of their optical properties, based on the quasistatic approximation, and its combination with results obtained by atomic force microscopy give a detailed characterization of the nanoparticles. This method has been compared with transmission electron microscopy and the results are in excellent agreement. Tailoring of the clustersâ dimensions by irradiation with nanosecond-pulsed laser light has been investigated. Selected particles are heated within the ensemble by excitation of the Mie resonance under irradiation with a tunable laser source. Laser-induced coalescence prevents strongly tailoring of the particle size. Nevertheless, control of the particle shape is possible. Laser-tailored ensembles have been tested as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), leading to an improvement of the results. Moreover, they constitute reproducible, robust and tunable SERS-substrates with a high potential for specific applications, in the present case focused on environmental protection. Thereby, these SERS-substrates are ideally suited for routine measurements.

The surface of a nanofiber that is formed from a self-assembling pseudopeptide has been decorated by gold and silver nanoparticles that are stabilized by a dipeptide. Transmission electron microscopic images make the decoration visible. In this paper, a new strategy of mineralizing a pseudopeptide based nanofiber by gold and silver nanoparticles with use of a two-component nanografting method is described.

We here report the synthesis, characterization and catalytic performance of new supported Ru(III) and Ru(0) catalysts. In contrast to most supported catalysts, these new developed catalysts for oxidation and hydrogenation reactions were prepared using nearly the same synthetic strategy, and are easily recovered by magnetic separation from liquid phase reactions. The catalysts were found to be active in both forms, Ru(III) and Ru(0), for selective oxidation of alcohols and hydrogenation of olefins, respectively. The catalysts operate under mild conditions to activate molecular oxygen or molecular hydrogen to perform clean conversion of selected substrates. Aryl and alkyl alcohols were converted to aldehydes under mild conditions, with negligible metal leaching. If the metal is properly reduced, Ru(0) nanoparticles immobilized on the magnetic support surface are obtained, and the catalyst becomes active for hydrogenation reactions. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different silver nanoparticles (SN) concentrations on the matrix composition and structure of Candida albicans and Candida glabrata biofilms. Methods and Results: Candida biofilms were developed in 6-well microtiter plates during 48 h. After, these biofilms were exposed to 13·5 or 54 μg SN ml-1 for 24 h. Then, extracellular matrices were extracted from biofilms and analysed chemically in terms of proteins, carbohydrates and DNA. To investigate the biofilm structure, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and epifluorescence microscopy were used. SN interfered with the matrix composition of Candida biofilms tested in terms of protein, carbohydrate and DNA, except for the protein content of C. albicans biofilm. By SEM, Candida biofilms treated with SN revealed structural differences, when compared with the control groups. Further, SN showed a trend of agglomeration within the biofilms. Epifluorescence microscopy images suggest that SN induced damage on cell walls of the Candida isolates tested. Conclusions: In general, irrespective of concentration, SN affected the matrix composition and structure of Candida biofilms and these findings may be related to the mechanisms of biocide action of SN. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study reveals new insights about the behaviour of SN when in contact with Candida biofilms. SN may contribute to the development of therapies to prevent or control Candida infections. © 2012 The Society for Applied Microbiology.

The sluggish kinetics of ethanol oxidation on Pt-based electrodes is one of the major drawbacks to its use as a liquid fuel in direct ethanol fuel cells, and considerable efforts have been made to improve the reaction kinetics. Herein, we report an investigation on the effect of the Pt microstructure (well-dispersed versus agglomerated nanoparticles) and the catalyst support (carbon Vulcan, SnO2, and RuO2) on the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol and its major adsorbed intermediate, namely, carbon monoxide. By using several structural characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, along with potentiodynamic and potentiostatic electrochemical experiments, we show that by altering both the Pt microstructure and the support, the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol can be improved up to a factor of 12 times compared to well-dispersed carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles. As a result of a combined effect, the interaction of Pt agglomerates with SnO2 yielded the highest current densities among all materials studied. The differences in the activity are discussed in terms of structural and electronic properties as well as by mass transport effects, providing valuable insights to the development of more active materials. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Silver/alanine nanocomposites with varying mass percentage of silver have been produced. The size of the silver nanoparticles seems to drive the formation of the nanocomposite, yielding a homogeneous dispersion of the silver nanoparticles in the alanine matrix or flocs of silver nanoparticles segregated from the alanine crystals. The alanine crystalline orientation is modified according to the particle size of the silver nanoparticles. Concerning a mass percentage of silver below 0.1%, the nanocomposites are homogeneous, and there is no particle aggregation. As the mass percentage of silver is increased, the system becomes unstable, and there is particle flocculation with subsequent segregation of the alanine crystals. The nanocomposites have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and they have been tested as radiation detectors by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in order to detect the paramagnetic centers created by the radiation. In fact, the sensitivity of the radiation detectors is optimized in the case of systems containing small particles (30 nm) that are well dispersed in the alanine matrix. As the agglomeration increases, particle growth (up to 1.5 mu m) and segregation diminish the sensitivity. In conclusion, nanostructured materials can be used for optimization of alanine sensitivity, by taking into account the influence of the particles size of the silver nanoparticles on the detection properties of the alanine radiation detectors, thus contributing to the construction of small-sized detectors.
