As Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are nearing the acceptable performance level for automotive and stationary applications, the focus on the research is shifting more and more toward enhancing their durability that still remains a major concern in their commercial acceptability. Hydrous ruthenium oxide (RuO2) is a promising material for pseudocapacitors due to its high stability, high specific-capacitance and rapid faradaic-reaction. Incorporation of carbon-supported RuO2 (RuO2/C) to platinum (Pt) is found to ameliorate both stability and catalytic activity of fuel cell cathodes that exhibit higher performance and durability in relation to Pt/C cathodes as evidenced by cell polarization, impedance and cyclic voltammetry data. The degradation in performance of Pt-RuO2/C cathodes is found to be only similar to 8% after 10000 accelerated stress test (AST) cycles as against similar to 60% for Pt/C cathodes after 7000 AST cycles under similar conditions. These data are in conformity with the Electrochemical Surface Area and impedance results. Interestingly, Pt-RuO2/C cathodes can withstand more than 10000 AST cycles with only a nominal loss in their performance. Studies on catalytic electrodes with X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and cross-sectional field-emission scanning electron microscopy reflect that incorporation of RuO2 to Pt helps mitigating aggregation of Pt particles and improves its stability during long-term operation of PEFCs. Present work describes the characterization of commercially available ZnO and its electrochemical investigation of dopamine in the presence of ascorbic acid. ZnO was characterized by powder XRD, UV-visible absorption, fluorescence, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The carbon paste electrode was modified with ZnO and ZnO/polyglycine for further electrochemical investigation of dopamine. The modified electrode shows good electrocatalytic activity towards the detection of dopamine with a reduction in overpotential. The ZnO/polyglycine modified carbon paste electrode (CPE/ZnO/Pgl) shows excellent electrochemical enhancement of peak currents for both dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) and for simultaneous detection of DA in the presence of high concentrations of AA with 0.214 V oxidation peak potential differences between them at pH 7.4. From the scan rate variation and concentration, the oxidation of DA and AA was found to be adsorption-controlled. The use of CPE/ZnO/Pgl is demonstrated for the detection of DA in blood serum and injection samples. This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012.

In this paper, we have carried out thin film characterization of poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene)-sultone (PProDOT-S), a derivative of electrochromic poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT). PProDOT-S was deposited onto transparent conducting oxide coated glass substrates by solution casting method. Single wavelength spectrophotometry is used to monitor the switching speed and contrast ratio at maximum wavelength (lambda (max)). The percentage transmittance at the lambda (max) of the neutral polymer is monitored as a function of time when the polymer film is repeatedly switched. This experiment gives a quantitative measure of the speed with which a film is able to switch between the two states i.e. the coloured and the bleached states. PProDOT-S films were switched at a voltage of 1 center dot 9 V with a switching speed of 2 s at lambda (max) of 565 nm and showed a contrast of similar to 37%. Cyclic voltammetry performed at different scan rates have shown the characteristic anodic and cathodic peaks. The structural investigations of PProDOT-S films by IR spectra were in good agreement with previously reported results. Raman spectra of PProDOT-S showed a strong Raman peak at 1509 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) and a weak peak at 1410 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) due to the C = C asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of thiophene rings. The morphological investigations carried out by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) of polymer films have shown that these polymers are found to be arranged in dense packed clusters with non-uniform distribution having an average width and length of 95 nm and 160 nm, respectively.

The use of an exfoliated graphite (EG) electrode in the square wave voltammetric detection of bisphenol A (a model phenolic pollutant) in water, whereby the phenolic electrode fouling challenge is mitigated, is described. The oxidation peak of BPA was observed at about 0.45 V in phosphate buffer solution at pH 10. The current response exhibited a linear relationship with the concentration over a range from 1.56 mu M-50 mu M. The detection limit was calculated to be 0.76 mu M. The EG electrode surface was renewed after each measurement with excellent reproducibility. A real sample application was also investigated.

Anatase Ag-TiO2 microwires with high sensitivity and photocatalytic activity were synthesized via polyol synthesis route followed by a simple surface modification and chemical reduction approach for attachment of silver. The superior performance of the Ag-TiO2 composite microwires is attributed to improved surface reactivity, mass transport and catalytic property as a result of wiring the TiO2 surface with Ag nanoparticles. Compared to the TiO2 microwires, Ag-TiO2 microwires exhibited three times higher sensitivity in the detection of cationic dye such as methylene blue. Photocatalytic degradation efficiency was also found to be significantly enhanced at constant illumination protocols and observation times. The improved performance is attributed to the formation of a Schottky barrier between TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles leading to a fast transport of photogenerated electrons to the Ag nanoparticles.

The morphology of nanocrystalline Co3O4 synthesized through microwave irradiation of a solution of a cobalt complex is found to depend reproducibly on the conditions of synthesis and, in particular, on the composition of the solvent used. Despite the rapidity of the process, oriented aggregation occurs under certain conditions, depending on solvent composition. Annealing the oriented samples leads to microstructures with significant porosity, rendering the material suitable as electrodes for electrochemical capacitors. Electrochemical analysis of the oxide samples was carried out in 0.1M Na2SO4 electrolyte vs. Ag/AgCl electrode. A stable specific capacitance of 221 F/g was measured for a meso-porous sample displaying oriented aggregation. Stability of these oxide materials were checked for longer charge-discharge cycling. A generalized top-spin analysis proposed some time ago in the context of the standard model and subsequently studied in varying contexts is now applied primarily to the case of e(+)e(-) -> t (tww) over bar with transversely polarized beams. This extends our recent work with new physics couplings of scalar (S) and tensor (T) types. We carry out a comprehensive analysis assuming only the electron beam to be transversely polarized, which is sufficient to probe these interactions, and also eliminates any azimuthal angular dependence due to the standard model or new physics of the vector (V) and axial-vector (A) type interactions. We then consider new physics of the general four-Fermi type of V and A type with both beams transversely polarized and discuss implications with longitudinal polarization as well. The generalized spin bases are all investigated in the presence of either longitudinal or transverse beam polarization to look for appreciable deviation from the SM prediction in case of the new physics. 90% confidence level limits are obtained on the interactions for the generalized spin bases with realistic integrated luminosity. In order to achieve this we present a general discussion based on helicity amplitudes and derive a general transformation matrix that enables us to treat the spin basis. We find that beamline basis combined with transverse polarization provides an excellent window of opportunity both for S, T and V, A new physics, followed by the off-diagonal basis. The helicity basis is shown to be the best in case of longitudinal polarization to look for new physics effects due to V and A. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.86.114019

The top polarization at the International Linear Collider (ILC) with transverse beam polarization is utilized in the process to probe interactions of the scalar and tensor type beyond the Standard Model and to disentangle their individual contributions. Confidence level limits of 90% are presented on the interactions with realistic integrated luminosity and are found to improve by an order of magnitude compared to the case when the spin of the top quark is not measured. Sensitivities of the order of a few times 10 (-aEuro parts per thousand 3) TeV (-aEuro parts per thousand 2) for real and imaginary parts of both scalar and tensor couplings at and 800 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) and completely polarized beams are shown to be possible.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes possess high conductivity and have advantages compared with their liquid counterparts. The polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based polymer is a good candidate for this purpose. The PEO/SnCl2/polyaniline composite (PSP composites) at different weight percentages were prepared in anhydrous acetonitrile media. Structural studies were carried out of the prepared composites by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy, and surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy. The sigma (dc) was carried out by a two-probe method, and it is found that the conductivity increases with an increase in temperature. The temperature-dependent conductivity of the composites exhibits a typical semi-conducting behavior and hence can be explained by the 1D variable range hopping model proposed by Mott. The electrochemical cell parameters for battery applications at room temperature have also been determined. The samples are fabricated for battery application in the configuration of Na: (PSP): (I-2 + C + sample), and their experimental data are measured using Wagner's polarization technique. The cell parameters result in an open-circuit voltage of 0.83 V and a short-circuit current of 912 mu A for PSP (70:30:10) composite. Hence, these composites can be used in polymer electrolyte studies.

The high efficiency of fuel-cell-powered electric vehicles makes them a potentially viable option for future transportation. Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are most promising among various fuel cells for electric traction due to their quick start-up and low-temperature operation. In recent years, the performance of PEFCs has reached the acceptable level both for automotive and stationary applications and efforts are now being expended in increasing their durability, which remains a major concern in their commercialization. To make PEFCs meet automotive targets an understanding of the factors affecting the stability of carbon support and platinum catalyst is critical. Alloying platinum (Pt) with first-row transition metals such as cobalt (Co) is reported to facilitate both higher degree of crystallinity and enhanced activity in relation to pristine Pt. But a major challenge for the application of Pt-transition metal alloys in PEFCs is to improve the stability of these binary catalysts. Dissolution of the non-precious metal in the acidic environment could alleviate the activity of the catalysts and hence cell performance. The use of graphitic carbon as cathode-catalyst support enhances the long-term stability of Pt and its alloys in relation to non-graphitic carbon as the former exhibits higher resistance to carbon corrosion in relation to the latter in PEFC cathodes during accelerated-stress test (AST). Changes in electrochemical surface area (ESA), cell performance and charge-transfer resistance are monitored during AST through cyclic voltammetry, cell polarization and impedance measurements, respectively. Studies on catalytic electrodes with X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy reflect that graphitic carbon-support resists carbon corrosion and helps mitigating aggregation of Pt and Pt3Co catalyst particles. Thermodynamic properties of Dysprosium rhodite (DyRhO3) are measured in the temperature range from 900 to 1,300 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of DyRhO3 with O-type perovskite structure from its components binary oxides, Dysprosia with C-rare earth structure and beta-Rh2O3 with orthorhombic structure, can be represented by the equation: Delta G(f(OX))(O) (+/- 182)/J mol(-1) = -52710+3.821(T/K). By using the thermodynamic data for DyRhO3 from experiment and auxiliary data for other phases from the literature, the phase relations in the system Dy-Rh-O are computed. Thermodynamic data for intermetallic phases in the binary system Dy-Rh, required for constructing the chemical potential diagrams, are evaluated using calorimetric data available in the literature for three intermetallics and Miedema's model, consistent with the phase diagram. The results are presented in the form of Gibbs triangle, oxygen potential-composition diagram, and three-dimensional chemical potential diagram at 1,273 K. Temperature-composition diagrams at constant oxygen partial pressures are also developed. The decomposition temperature of DyRhO3 is 1,732 (+/- 2.5) K in pure oxygen and 1,624 (+/- 2.5) K and in air at standard pressure.

The present study is focussed at establishing an appropriate electrolyte system for developing electrochemically stable and fluorine (F) containing titania (F-TiO2) films on Cp Ti by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. To fabricate the F-TiO2 films on Cp Ti, different electrolyte solutions of chosen concentrations of tri-sodium orthophosphate (TSOP, Na3PO4 center dot I2H2O), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and various F-containing compounds such as ammonium fluoride (NH4F), potassium fluoride (KF), sodium fluoride (NaF) and potassium fluorotitanate (K2TiF6) are employed. The structural and morphological characteristics, thickness and elemental composition of the developed films have been assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The in-vitro electrochemical corrosion behavior of the films was studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) environment by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The XRD and SEM-EDS results show that the rutile content in the films vary in the range of 15-37 wt% and the F and P contents in the films is found to be in the range of 2-3 at% and 2.9-4.7 at% respectively, suggesting that the anatase to rutile phase transformation and the incorporation of F and P into the films are significantly controlled by the respective electrolyte solution. The SEM elemental mapping results show that the electrolyte borne F and P elements are incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the films under study, the film developed with 5 g TSOP+2 g KOH+3 g K2TiF6 electrolyte system exhibits considerably improved in-vitro corrosion resistance and therefore best suited for biomedical applications. Photoassisted electrolysis of water is considered as an effective way of storing solar energy in the form of hydrogen fuel. This overall reaction involves the oxidation of water to oxygen at the anode and the reduction of protons to hydrogen at the cathode. Cobalt-phosphate-based catalyst (Co-Pi) is a potentially useful material for oxygen evolution reaction. In the present study, electrochemical deposition of Co-Pi catalyst is carried out on Au-coated quartz crystal from 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7) containing 0.5 mM Co2+ ion, along with the simultaneous measurement of mass changes at the electrode surface. Cyclic voltammograms and mass variations are recorded during the course of deposition. A current peak is observed at 0.92 V vs Ag/AgCl, 3 M KCl corresponding to oxidation of Co2+ ion. The mass of the electrode starts increasing at this potential, suggesting the deposition of a Co(III)-based insoluble product on the electrode surface. The stability of the catalyst is also studied at several potentials in both buffered and nonbuffered electrolyte by monitoring the real-time mass variations.

The configuration of hemoglobin in solution and confined inside silica nanotubes has been studied using synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering and electrochemical activity. Confinement inside submicron tubes of silica aid in preventing protein aggregation, which is vividly observed for unconfined protein in solution. The radius of gyration (R-g) and size polydispersity (p) of confined hemoglobin was found to be lower than that in solution. This was also recently demonstrated in case of confined hemoglobin inside layered polymer capsules. The confined hemoglobin displayed a higher thermal stability with Rg and p showing negligible changes in the temperature range 25-75 degrees C. The differences in configuration between the confined and unconfined protein were reflected in their electrochemical activity. Reversible electrochemical response (from cyclic voltammograms) obtained in case of the confined hemoglobin, in contrary to the observance of only a cathodic response for the unconfined protein, gave direct indication of the differences between the residences of the electroactive heme center in a different orientation compared to that in solution state. The confined Hb showed loss of reversibility only at higher temperatures. The electron transfer coefficient (alpha) and electron transfer rate constant (k(s)) were also different, providing additional evidence regarding structural differences between the unconfined and confined states of hemoglobin. Thus, absence of any adverse effects due to confinement of proteins inside the inorganic matrices such as silica nanotubes opens up new prospects for utilizing inorganic matrices as protein ``encapsulators'', as well as sensors at varying temperatures.
