Joints intended for welding frequently show variations in geometry and position, for which it is unfortunately not possible to apply a single set of operating parameters to ensure constant quality. The cause of this difficulty lies in a number of factors, including inaccurate joint preparation and joint fit up, tack welds, as well as thermal distortion of the workpiece. In plasma arc keyhole welding of butt joints, deviations in the gap width may cause weld defects such as an incomplete weld bead, excessive penetration and burn through. Manual adjustment of welding parameters to compensate for variations in the gap width is very difficult, and unsatisfactory weld quality is often obtained. In this study a control system for plasma arc keyhole welding has been developed and used to study the effects of the real time control of welding parameters on gap tolerance during welding of austenitic stainless steel AISI 304L. The welding tests demonstrated the beneficial effect of real time control on weld quality. Compared with welding using constant parameters, the maximum tolerable gap width with an acceptable weld quality was 47% higher when using the real time controlled parameters for a plate thickness of 5 mm. In addition, burn through occurred with significantly larger gap widths when parameters were controlled in real time. Increased gap tolerance enables joints to be prepared and fit up less accurately, saving time and preparation costs for welding. In addition to the control system, a novel technique for back face monitoring is described in this study. The test results showed that the technique could be successfully applied for penetration monitoring when welding non magnetic materials. The results also imply that it is possible to measure the dimensions of the plasma efflux or weld root, and use this information in a feedback control system and, thus, maintain the required weld quality.

The RPC Detector Control System (RCS) is the main subject of this PhD work. The project, involving the Lappeenranta University of Technology, the Warsaw University and INFN of Naples, is aimed to integrate the different subsystems for the RPC detector and its trigger chain in order to develop a common framework to control and monitoring the different parts. In this project, I have been strongly involved during the last three years on the hardware and software development, construction and commissioning as main responsible and coordinator. The CMS Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) system consists of 912 double-gap chambers at its start-up in middle of 2008. A continuous control and monitoring of the detector, the trigger and all the ancillary sub-systems (high voltages, low voltages, environmental, gas, and cooling), is required to achieve the operational stability and reliability of a so large and complex detector and trigger system. Role of the RPC Detector Control System is to monitor the detector conditions and performance, control and monitor all subsystems related to RPC and their electronics and store all the information in a dedicated database, called Condition DB. Therefore the RPC DCS system has to assure the safe and correct operation of the sub-detectors during all CMS life time (more than 10 year), detect abnormal and harmful situations and take protective and automatic actions to minimize consequential damages. The analysis of the requirements and project challenges, the architecture design and its development as well as the calibration and commissioning phases represent themain tasks of the work developed for this PhD thesis. Different technologies, middleware and solutions has been studied and adopted in the design and development of the different components and a big challenging consisted in the integration of these different parts each other and in the general CMS control system and data acquisition framework. Painelajittimet ovat yleisimpiä hiokkeen lajitteluun käytettyjä lajittimia. Painelajittimien suorituskyky on parantunut viimeisten vuosikymmenien aikana niin paljon, että pyörrepuhdistuksesta on pääosin voitu luopua osana hiokkeen lajittelua. Painelajittimen erinomaisuus perustuu siihen, että sillä voidaan erottaa massasta hyvinkin erilaisia epäpuhtauksia. Nykyään vallitsevia painelajittelun trendejä ovat sakeuden nosto, energiankulutuksen vähentäminen sekä eri fraktioiden erottumisen tehostuminen. Kaikilla pyritään vähentämään vedenkäyttöä ja parantamaan massan ominaisuuksia jatkoprosesseja silmälläpitäen. Tässä työssä tarkasteltiin painelajittimen roottorin kierrosnopeuden vaikutusta akseptimassan laatuun. Luodaan malli freeness-pudotukselle lajittimen yli. Sekä tarkastellaan myös automaatioon pohjautuvan säädön käyttöönottoa lajittimen akseptimassan freenesvaihteluiden tasaamiseksi. Toisaalta tehdään myös suppea selvitys lajittimien energiankulutuksista erilaisilla roottorin pyörimisnopeuksilla. Tuotantokäytössä oleviin lajittimiin asennettujen invertterisäätöjen ja koepisteistä saatujen tulosten avulla voidaan todeta, että laskemalla roottorin pyörimisnopeutta voidaan lajittimessa tapahtuvaa freenespudotusta kasvattaa. Samalla saavutetaan hyötyjä myös muissa massan ominaisuuksissa, kuten vetolujuudessa. Automaattisäädön käyttöönotolla saavutetaan huomattavasti pienempi hajonta akseptimassan freeneksessä. Rejektilinjan lajittimissa hajonta lähes puolittui ja päälinjan lajittimissa päästiin noin kolmanneksen parannukseen. Energian kulutuksia tutkittaessa huomataan, että roottorin kierrosnopeutta alentamalla voidaan merkittävästi vähentää lajittimien energian kulutusta. Parhaassa tapauksessa voidaan säästää neljännes lajittelun energiakustannuksissa.

The topic of this thesis is the simulation of a combination of several control and data assimilation methods, meant to be used for controlling the quality of paper in a paper machine. Paper making is a very complex process and the information obtained from the web is sparse. A paper web scanner can only measure a zig zag path on the web. An assimilation method is needed to process estimates for Machine Direction (MD) and Cross Direction (CD) profiles of the web. Quality control is based on these measurements. There is an increasing need for intelligent methods to assist in data assimilation. The target of this thesis is to study how such intelligent assimilation methods are affecting paper web quality. This work is based on a paper web simulator, which has been developed in the TEKES funded MASI NoTes project. The simulator is a valuable tool in comparing different assimilation methods. The thesis contains the comparison of four different assimilation methods. These data assimilation methods are a first order Bayesian model estimator, an ARMA model based on a higher order Bayesian estimator, a Fourier transform based Kalman filter estimator and a simple block estimator. The last one can be considered to be close to current operational methods. From these methods Bayesian, ARMA and Kalman all seem to have advantages over the commercial one. The Kalman and ARMA estimators seems to be best in overall performance.

Robotin ohjelmointi on aikaa vievää ja tarvitsee robotin ohjelmoinnin tuntevan operaattorin toimimaan robotin opettajana. Saadakseen robottisolun kustannustehokkaaksi operaattorilla olisi hyvä olla useampi solu hoidettavanaan samaan aikaan. Tämä ei ole suuri ongelma suurille yrityksille, joissa voi olla kymmeniä robottisoluja. Jos kyseessä on pieni tai keskisuuri yritys, automatisointi-investointi voi jäädä tekemättä ohjelmoinnin vaikeuden aiheuttaman ongelman vuoksi. Diplomityössä keskityttiin tutkimaan robotisointia pienten ja keskisuurten yritysten kannalta. Teoriaosassa on keskitytty robottisolun suunnittelun kannalta tarvittaviin perustietoihin robotin rakenteesta, ohjausjärjestelmästä, ohjelmoinnista sekä turvallisuudesta. Näiden perustietojen lisäksi on huomioitu hitsauksen automatisointia sekä taluttamalla ohjelmoitavan robottisolun tekninen konsepti. Taluttamalla ohjelmoitavan robottisolun konseptin käsittelyosassa on myös perehdytty taluttamalla ohjelmoinnin vaatimiin komponentteihin kuten voima/vääntö-anturi. Robottisolun suunnittelu on tehtävä koneasetuksen vaatimusten mukaan. Turvallisuus osiossa on käsitelty koneasetuksen vaatimuksia koneensuunnittelulle ja käytännön osassa on käsitelty Winnovan taluttamalla ohjelmoitavan robottisolun suunnittelua koneasetuksen ohjeiden mukaan. Käytännön osassa on tutkittu taluttamalla ohjelmoinnin tuomia etuja muihin ohjelmointimenetelmiin nähden sekä suoritettu investointilaskelmat taluttamalla ohjelmoitavasta ja opettamalla ohjelmoitavasta robottisolusta. Koetuloksista nähdään taluttamalla ohjelmoinnin olevan nopeampi ja yksinkertaisempi tapa ohjelmoida robottia kuin opettamalla ohjelmointi. Investointilaskelmien vertailusta nähdään taluttamalla ohjelmoinnin tulevan opettamalla ohjelmointia edullisemmaksi vaihtoehdoksi käyttökustannusten edullisuuden ansiosta.

The irrigation management based on the monitoring of the soil water content allows for the minimization of the amount of water applied, making its use more efficient. Taking into account these aspects, in this work, a sensor for measuring the soil water content was developed to allow real time automation of irrigation systems. This way, problems affecting crop yielding such as irregularities in the time to turn on or turn off the pump, and excess or deficit of water can be solved. To develop the sensors were used stainless steel rods, resin, and insulating varnish. The sensors measuring circuit was based on a microcontroller, which gives its output signal in the digital format. The sensors were calibrated using soil of the type “Quartzarenic Neosoil”. A third order polynomial model was fitted to the experimental data between the values of water content corresponding to the field capacity and the wilting point to correlate the soil water content obtained by the oven standard method with those measured by the electronic circuit, with a coefficient of determination of 93.17%, and an accuracy in the measures of ±0.010 kg kg-1. Based on the results, it was concluded that the sensor and its implemented measuring circuit can be used in the automation process of irrigation systems.

In this doctoral thesis, a power conversion unit for a 10 kWsolid oxide fuel cell is modeled, and a suitable control system is designed. The need for research was identified based on an observation that there was no information available about the characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell from the perspective of power electronics and the control system, and suitable control methods had not previously been studied in the literature. In addition, because of the digital implementation of the control system, the inherent characteristics of the digital system had to be taken into account in the characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell as well the methods for the modeling and control of the DC/DC converter and the grid converter are studied by a literature survey. Based on the survey, the characteristics of the SOFC as an electrical power source are identified, and a solution to the interfacing of the SOFC in distributed generation is proposed. A mathematical model of the power conversion unit is provided, and the control design for the DC/DC converter and the grid converter is made based on the proposed interfacing solution. The limit cycling phenomenon is identified as a source of low-frequency current ripple, which is found to be insignificant when connected to a grid-tied converter. A method to mitigate a second harmonic originating from the grid interface is proposed, and practical considerations of the operation with the solid oxide fuel cell plant are presented. At the theoretical level, the thesis discusses and summarizes the methods to successfully derive a model for a DC/DC converter, a grid converter, and a power conversion unit. The results of this doctoral thesis can also be used in other applications, and the models and methods can be adopted to similar applications such as photovoltaic systems. When comparing the results with the objectives of the doctoral thesis, we may conclude that the objectives set for the work are met. In this doctoral thesis, theoretical and practical guidelines are presented for the successful control design to connect a SOFC-based distributed generation plant to the utility grid.

In this work the implementation of the active magnetic bearing control system in a single FPGA is studied. Requirements for the full magnetic bearing control system are reviewed. Different control methods for active magnetic bearings are described shortly. Flux and the current base controllers are implemented in a FPGA. Suitability of the con-trollers for a low-cost magnetic bearing application is studied. Floating-point arithmetic’s are used in the controllers to ease designing burden and improve calculation precision. Per-formance of the flux controller is verified with simulations.

Tämä kandityön aihe liittyy LUT Energialla lukuvuonna 2012 – 2013 käynnissä olevaan tutkimukseen, jossa tutkitaan sähkömoottorin laakerivirtojen syntyä. Tätä tutkimusta varten tarvittiin sähkömoottorin etäohjausjärjestelmä, jonka avulla tutkimuksessa käytettävän sähkömoottorin käyttäytymistä voitaisiin tutkia erilaisien käyttöprofiileiden funktiona. Tässä kandityössä suunnitellaan ja toteutetaan edellä kuvattu järjestelmä. Toteutuksessa hyödynnetään nykyaikaista automaatiotekniikkaa, joka yhdessä Ethernet-lähiverkkotekniikan kanssa mahdollistaa etäohjauksen. Valmiin etäohjausjärjestelmän avulla käyttäjä pystyy sekä käynnistämään että sammuttamaan sähkömoottorin, ja määrittämään käyttöprofiilin ON- ja OFF-tilojen ajalliset kestot sekä käyntinopeudet.

Työssä tutkitaan mahdollisuutta hyödyntää sähkömoottorien nopeudensäätöön suunniteltuja kaupallisia taajuusmuuttajia osana aktiivisesti säädetyn magneettilaakeroinnin säätöjärjestelmää. Magneettilaakerijärjestelmän ohjaamiseksi tarvitaan vahvistin, jonka tehtävänä on muuntaa paikkasäätöjärjestelmältä tuleva ohjearvo virraksi, jännitteeksi tai magneettivuoksi voiman tuottamiseksi laakerikäämityksellä. Nykyaikaiset modernit taajuusmuuttajat mahdollistavat säätöalgoritmien suorittamisen sekä liitynnän muuhun automaatiojärjestelmään kenttäväylien kautta. Tämän järjestelmäintegraation myötä olisi mahdollista rakentaa modulaarinen säätöjärjestelmä hyödyntäen luotettavaksi todettuja teollisuusautomaatiotuotteita vain muutamalla itse magneettilaakerijärjestelmään liittyvällä tuotteella. Haluttaessa hyödyntää kolmivaiheinen taajuusmuuttaja mahdollisimman tehokkaasti magneettilaakerin teholähteenä tulee laakerikäämityksien kytkeytymistä taajuusmuuttajaan tarkastella tarkemmin. Kirjallisuustutkimuksessa keskitytään taajuusmuuttajan tehokytkimien muodostaman vaihtosuuntaajan eri rakennevaihtoehtojen sekä virtasäädön dynaamisten ominaisuuksien tarkasteluun. Soveltuvien rakennevaihtoehtojen sekä virtasäädön suorituskyky todennetaan simuloinnein ja lopuksi todellisella koelaitteistolla. Magneettilaakeroinnilla varustetun sähkökoneen roottorin onnistunut leijuttaminen viiden vapausasteen suhteen paikkasäädettynä sekä mittauksien tulokset osoittavat, ettei taajuusmuuttajien järjestelmäarkkitehtuurista löydy merkittäviä esteitä muuttajien hyödyntämiseksi magneettilaakerisovelluksissa.

This paper studies the effect of time delay on the active non-linear control of dynamically loaded flexible structures. The behavior of non-linear systems under state feedback control, considering a fixed time delay for the control force, is investigated. A control method based on non-linear optimal control, using a tensorial formulation and state feedback control is used. The state equations and the control forces are expressed in polynomial form and a performance index, quadratic in both state vector and control forces, is used. General polynomial representations of the non-linear control law are obtained and implemented for control algorithms up to the fifth order. This methodology is applied to systems with quadratic and cubic non-linearities. Strongly non-linear systems are tested and the effectiveness of the control system including a delay for the application of control forces is discussed. Numerical results indicate that the adopted control algorithm can be efficient for non-linear systems, chiefly in the presence of strong non-linearities but increasing time delay reduces the efficiency of the control system. Numerical results emphasize the importance of considering time delay in the project of active structural control systems.

An Autonomous Mobile Robot battery driven, with two traction wheels and a steering wheel is being developed. This Robot central control is regulated by an IPC, which controls every function of security, steering, positioning localization and driving. Each traction wheel is operated by a DC motor with independent control system. This system is made up of a chopper, an encoder and a microcomputer. The IPC transmits the velocity values and acceleration ramp references to the PIC microcontrollers. As each traction wheel control is independent, it's possible to obtain different speed values for each wheel. This process facilities the direction and drive changes. Two different strategies for speed velocity control were implemented; one works with PID, and the other with fuzzy logic. There were no changes in circuits and feedback control, except for the PIC microcontroller software. Comparing the two different speed control strategies the results were equivalent. However, in relation to the development and implementation of these strategies, the difficulties were bigger to implement the PID control.

This work analyzes an active fuzzy logic control system in a Rijke type pulse combustor. During the system development, a study of the existing types of control for pulse combustion was carried out and a simulation model was implemented to be used with the package Matlab and Simulink. Blocks which were not available in the simulator library were developed. A fuzzy controller was developed and its membership functions and inference rules were established. The obtained simulation showed that fuzzy logic is viable in the control of combustion instabilities. The obtained results indicated that the control system responded to pulses in an efficient and desirable way. It was verified that the system needed approximately 0.2 s to increase the tube internal pressure from 30 to 90 mbar, with an assumed total delay of 2 ms. The effects of delay variation were studied. Convergence was always obtained and general performance was not affected by the delay. The controller sends a pressure signal in phase with the Rijke tube internal pressure signal, through the speakers, when an increase the oscillations pressure amplitude is desired. On the other hand, when a decrease of the tube internal pressure amplitude is desired, the controller sends a signal 180º out of phase.

TVO suunnittelee reaktoritehon 10 %:n korotusta Olkiluoto 1 ja 2 -voimalaitoksille. Reaktoriteho nostetaan 2500 MW:sta 2750 MW:iin polttoaineen rikastusastetta nostamalla ja pääkiertovirtausta kasvattamalla. Samalla syöttövesivirtaus reaktoriin ja tuorehöyryvirtaus turpiineille kasvaa. Lauhteenpuhdistusjärjestelmän kapasiteettia ei voida kuitenkaan kasvattaa, joten massavirran lisäys toteutetaan ottamalla käyttöön korkeapainesivulauhteen eteenpäinpumppaus. Lauhteen esilämmityslinjojen, lauhteenpuhdistuksen ja syöttövesipumppujen massavirta säilyy siten nykyisellään. Muita merkittäviä tehonkorotukseen liittyviä laitosmuutoksia ovat pääkiertopumppujen uusinta ja korkeapaineturpiinin muutokset. Tehonkorotetun prosessin käytettävyyden varmistamiseksi tehdään häiriöanalyysejä Apros-prosessisimulointiohjelmistoa käyttäen. OL1 ja OL2 -laitoksista on olemassa validoitu 2500 MW:n laitosmalli, josta muokatulla 2750 MW:n laitosmallilla simuloinnit tehdään. Häiriöanalyysien avulla selvitetään säätöjärjestelmien kyky pitää prosessin tila hallinnassa ilman suojausautomaation laukeamista. Simuloituihin tapauksiin kuuluu pumppujen ja venttiilien vikaantumistapauksia sekä turpiini- ja reaktoripuolen pikasulku- ja osittaispikasulkutapauksia. Myös meriveden lämpötilan vaikutusta häiriötilanteisiin tarkastellaan. Analyysien perusteella voimalaitosten ohjaus- ja suojausautomaatio toimivat hyvin myös korotetulla teholla. Tehonkorotuksen jälkeiset suuremmat massavirrat aiheuttavat kuitenkin voimakkaampia reaktoripaineen ja -tehon vaihteluita varsinkin venttiilien sulkeutumistapauksissa. Simuloinnit osoittivat, että tehonkorotus 2500 MW:sta 2750 MW:iin on mahdollinen, mutta aiheuttaa pieniä muutoksia laitoksen suojausjärjestelmien laukaisurajoihin.

The assembly and maintenance of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) vacuum vessel (VV) is highly challenging since the tasks performed by the robot involve welding, material handling, and machine cutting from inside the VV. The VV is made of stainless steel, which has poor machinability and tends to work harden very rapidly, and all the machining operations need to be carried out from inside of the ITER VV. A general industrial robot cannot be used due to its poor stiffness in the heavy duty machining process, and this will cause many problems, such as poor surface quality, tool damage, low accuracy. Therefore, one of the most suitable options should be a light weight mobile robot which is able to move around inside of the VV and perform different machining tasks by replacing different cutting tools. Reducing the mass of the robot manipulators offers many advantages: reduced material costs, reduced power consumption, the possibility of using smaller actuators, and a higher payload-to-robot weight ratio. Offsetting these advantages, the lighter weight robot is more flexible, which makes it more difficult to control. To achieve good machining surface quality, the tracking of the end effector must be accurate, and an accurate model for a more flexible robot must be constructed. This thesis studies the dynamics and control of a 10 degree-of-freedom (DOF) redundant hybrid robot (4-DOF serial mechanism and 6-DOF 6-UPS hexapod parallel mechanisms) hydraulically driven with flexible rods under the influence of machining forces. Firstly, the flexibility of the bodies is described using the floating frame of reference method (FFRF). A finite element model (FEM) provided the Craig-Bampton (CB) modes needed for the FFRF. A dynamic model of the system of six closed loop mechanisms was assembled using the constrained Lagrange equations and the Lagrange multiplier method. Subsequently, the reaction forces between the parallel and serial parts were used to study the dynamics of the serial robot. A PID control based on position predictions was implemented independently to control the hydraulic cylinders of the robot. Secondly, in machining, to achieve greater end effector trajectory tracking accuracy for surface quality, a robust control of the actuators for the flexible link has to be deduced. This thesis investigates the intelligent control of a hydraulically driven parallel robot part based on the dynamic model and two schemes of intelligent control for a hydraulically driven parallel mechanism based on the dynamic model: (1) a fuzzy-PID self-tuning controller composed of the conventional PID control and with fuzzy logic, and (2) adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system-PID (ANFIS-PID) self-tuning of the gains of the PID controller, which are implemented independently to control each hydraulic cylinder of the parallel mechanism based on rod length predictions. The serial component of the hybrid robot can be analyzed using the equilibrium of reaction forces at the universal joint connections of the hexa-element. To achieve precise positional control of the end effector for maximum precision machining, the hydraulic cylinder should be controlled to hold the hexa-element. Thirdly, a finite element approach of multibody systems using the Special Euclidean group SE(3) framework is presented for a parallel mechanism with flexible piston rods under the influence of machining forces. The flexibility of the bodies is described using the nonlinear interpolation method with an exponential map. The equations of motion take the form of a differential algebraic equation on a Lie group, which is solved using a Lie group time integration scheme. The method relies on the local description of motions, so that it provides a singularity-free formulation, and no parameterization of the nodal variables needs to be introduced. The flexible slider constraint is formulated using a Lie group and used for modeling a flexible rod sliding inside a cylinder. The dynamic model of the system of six closed loop mechanisms was assembled using Hamilton’s principle and the Lagrange multiplier method. A linearized hydraulic control system based on rod length predictions was implemented independently to control the hydraulic cylinders. Consequently, the results of the simulations demonstrating the behavior of the robot machine are presented for each case study. In conclusion, this thesis studies the dynamic analysis of a special hybrid (serialparallel) robot for the above-mentioned special task involving the ITER and investigates different control algorithms that can significantly improve machining performance. These analyses and results provide valuable insight into the design and control of the parallel robot with flexible rods.
