A few advanced bus-clamping pulse width modulation (ABCPWM) methods have been proposed recently for a three-phase inverter. With these methods, each phase is clamped, switched at nominal frequency, and switched at twice the nominal frequency in different regions of the fundamental cycle. This study proposes a generalised ABCPWM scheme, encompassing the few ABCPWM schemes that have been proposed and many more ABCPWM schemes that have not been reported yet. Furthermore, analytical closed-form expression is derived for the harmonic distortion factor corresponding to the generalised ABCPWM. This factor is independent of load parameters. The analytical expression derived here brings out the dependence of root-mean-square (RMS) current ripple on modulation index, and can be used to evaluate the RMS current ripple corresponding to any ABCPWM scheme. The analytical closed-form expression is validated experimentally in terms of measured weighted total harmonic distortion (THD) in line voltage (V-WTHD) and measured THD in line current (I-THD) on a 6 kW induction motor drive.

We investigated the potential of using novel zoledronic acid (ZOL)-hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticle based drug formulation in a rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. By a classical adsorption method, nanoparticles of HA loaded with ZOL (HNLZ) drug formulation with a size range of 100-130 nm were prepared. 56 female Wistar rats were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated at 3 months of age. Twelve weeks post surgery, rats were randomized into seven groups and treated with various doses of HNLZ (100, 50 and 25 mu g/kg, intravenous single dose), ZOL (100 mu g/kg, intravenous single dose) and HA nanoparticle (100 mu g/kg, intravenous single dose). Untreated OVX and sham OVX served as controls. After three months treatment period, we evaluated the mechanical properties of the lumbar vertebra and femoral mid-shaft. Femurs were also tested for trabecular microarchitecture. Sensitive biochemical markers of bone formation and bone resorption in serum were also determined. With respect to improvement in the mechanical strength of the lumbar spine and the femoral mid-shaft, the therapy with HNLZ drug formulation was more effective than ZOL therapy in OVX rats. Moreover, HNLZ drug therapy preserved the trabecular microarchitecture better than ZOL therapy in OVX rats. Furthermore, the HNLZ drug formulation corrected increase in serum levels of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide, osteocalcin, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b and C-telopeptide of type 1 collagen better than ZOL therapy in OVX rats. The results strongly suggest that HNLZ novel drug formulation appears to be more effective approach for treating severe osteoporosis in humans. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The trapezoidal rule, which is a special case of the Newmark family of algorithms, is one of the most widely used methods for transient hyperbolic problems. In this work, we show that this rule conserves linear and angular momenta and energy in the case of undamped linear elastodynamics problems, and an ``energy-like measure'' in the case of undamped acoustic problems. These conservation properties, thus, provide a rational basis for using this algorithm. In linear elastodynamics problems, variants of the trapezoidal rule that incorporate ``high-frequency'' dissipation are often used, since the higher frequencies, which are not approximated properly by the standard displacement-based approach, often result in unphysical behavior. Instead of modifying the trapezoidal algorithm, we propose using a hybrid finite element framework for constructing the stiffness matrix. Hybrid finite elements, which are based on a two-field variational formulation involving displacement and stresses, are known to approximate the eigenvalues much more accurately than the standard displacement-based approach, thereby either bypassing or reducing the need for high-frequency dissipation. We show this by means of several examples, where we compare the numerical solutions obtained using the displacement-based and hybrid approaches against analytical solutions.

Regional frequency analysis is widely used for estimating quantiles of hydrological extreme events at sparsely gauged/ungauged target sites in river basins. It involves identification of a region (group of watersheds) resembling watershed of the target site, and use of information pooled from the region to estimate quantile for the target site. In the analysis, watershed of the target site is assumed to completely resemble watersheds in the identified region in terms of mechanism underlying generation of extreme event. In reality, it is rare to find watersheds that completely resemble each other. Fuzzy clustering approach can account for partial resemblance of watersheds and yield region(s) for the target site. Formation of regions and quantile estimation requires discerning information from fuzzy-membership matrix obtained based on the approach. Practitioners often defuzzify the matrix to form disjoint clusters (regions) and use them as the basis for quantile estimation. The defuzzification approach (DFA) results in loss of information discerned on partial resemblance of watersheds. The lost information cannot be utilized in quantile estimation, owing to which the estimates could have significant error. To avert the loss of information, a threshold strategy (TS) was considered in some prior studies. In this study, it is analytically shown that the strategy results in under-prediction of quantiles. To address this, a mathematical approach is proposed in this study and its effectiveness in estimating flood quantiles relative to DFA and TS is demonstrated through Monte-Carlo simulation experiments and case study on Mid-Atlantic water resources region, USA. The topic of magnetized super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs is in the limelight, particularly in the last few years, since our proposal of their existence. By full-scale general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) numerical analysis, we confirm in this work the existence of stable, highly magnetized, significantly super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs with mass more than 3 solar mass. While a poloidal field geometry renders the white dwarfs oblate, a toroidal field makes them prolate retaining an overall quasi-spherical shape, as speculated in our earlier work. These white dwarfs are expected to serve as the progenitors of over-luminous type Ia supernovae.

In this paper, an alternative apriori and aposteriori formulation has been derived for the discrete linear quadratic regulator (DLQR) in a manner analogous to that used in the discrete Kalman filter. It has been shown that the formulation seamlessly fits into the available formulation of the DLQR and the equivalent terms in the existing formulation and the proposed formulation have been identified. Thereafter, the significance of this alternative formulation has been interpreted in terms of the sensitivity of the controller performances to any changes in the states or to changes in the control inputs. The implications of this alternative formulation to adaptive controller tuning have also been discussed.

Unreinforced masonry (URM) structures that are in need of repair and rehabilitation constitute a significant portion of building stock worldwide. The successful application of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) for repair and retrofitting of reinforced-concrete (RC) structures has opened new avenues for strengthening URM structures with FRP materials. The present study analyzes the behavior of FRP-confined masonry prisms under monotonic axial compression. Masonry comprising of burnt clay bricks and cement-sand mortar (generally adopted in the Indian subcontinent) having E-b/E-m ratio less than one is employed in the study. The parameters considered in the study are, (1) masonry bonding pattern, (2) inclination of loading axis to the bed joint, (3) type of FRP (carbon FRP or glass FRP), and (4) grade of FRP fabric. The performance of FRP-confined masonry prisms is compared with unconfined masonry prisms in terms of compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and stress-strain response. The results showed an enhancement in compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, strain at peak stress, and ultimate strain for FRP-confined masonry prisms. The FRP confinement of masonry resulted in reducing the influence of the inclination of the loading axis to the bed joint on the compressive strength and failure pattern. Various analytical models available in the literature for the prediction of compressive strength of FRP-confined masonry are assessed. New coefficients are generated for the analytical model by appending experimental results of the current study with data available in the literature. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

A lower-bound limit analysis formulation, by using two-dimensional finite elements, the three-dimensional Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion, and nonlinear optimization, has been given to deal with an axisymmetric geomechanics stability problem. The optimization was performed using an interior point method based on the logarithmic barrier function. The yield surface was smoothened (1) by removing the tip singularity at the apex of the pyramid in the meridian plane and (2) by eliminating the stress discontinuities at the corners of the yield hexagon in the pi-plane. The circumferential stress (sigma(theta)) need not be assumed. With the proposed methodology, for a circular footing, the bearing-capacity factors N-c, N-q, and N-gamma for different values of phi have been computed. For phi = 0, the variation of N-c with changes in the factor m, which accounts for a linear increase of cohesion with depth, has been evaluated. Failure patterns for a few cases have also been drawn. The results from the formulation provide a good match with the solutions available from the literature. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Here we extend the exploration of significantly super-Chandrasekhar magnetized white dwarfs by numerically computing axisymmetric stationary equilibria of differentially rotating magnetized polytropic compact stars in general relativity (GR), within the ideal magnetohydrodynamic regime. We use a general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) framework that describes rotating and magnetized axisymmetric white dwarfs, choosing appropriate rotation laws and magnetic field profiles (toroidal and poloidal). The numerical procedure for finding solutions in this framework uses the 3 + 1 formalism of numerical relativity, implemented in the open source XNS code. We construct equilibrium sequences by varying different physical quantities in turn, and highlight the plausible existence of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs, with masses in the range of 2-3 solar mass, with central (deep interior) magnetic fields of the order of 10(14) G and differential rotation with surface time periods of about 1-10 s. We note that such white dwarfs are candidates for the progenitors of peculiar, overluminous Type Ia supernovae, to which observational evidence ascribes mass in the range 2.1-2.8 solar mass. We also present some interesting results related to the structure of such white dwarfs, especially the existence of polar hollows in special cases.

General propagation properties and universal curves are given for double clad single mode fibers with inner cladding index higher or lower than the outer cladding index, using the parameter: inner cladding/core radii ratio. Mode cut-off conditions are also examined for the cases. It is shown that dispersion properties largely differ from the single clad single mode fiber case, leading to large new possibilities for extension of single mode operation for large wavelength tange. Paper demonstrates that how substantially we can extend the single mode operation range by using the raised inner cladding fiber. Throughout we have applied our own computations technique to find out the eigenvalue for a given modes. Detail derivations with all trivial mathematics for eigenmode equation are derived for each case. Paper also demonstrates that there is not much use of using depressed inner cladding fiber. We have also concluded that using the large inner cladding/inner core radius we can significantly increase the single mode operation range for the large wavelength region. (C) 2015 Elsevier GmbH. We investigate the effect of time-dependent cyclic-adiabatic driving on the charge transport in a quantum junction. We propose a nonequilibrium Green's function formalism to study the statistics of the charge pumped (at zero bias) through the junction. The formulation is used to demonstrate charge pumping in a single electronic level coupled to two (electronic) reservoirs with time-dependent couplings. An analytical expression for the average pumped current for a general cyclic driving is derived. It is found that for zero bias, for a certain class of driving, the Berry phase contributes only to the odd cumulants. In contrast, a quantum master equation formulation does not show a Berry-phase effect at all.

This work deals with the transient analysis of flexible multibody systems within a hybrid finite element framework. Hybrid finite elements are based on a two-field variational formulation in which the displacements and stresses are interpolated separately yielding very good coarse mesh accuracy. Most of the literature on flexible multibody systems uses beam-theory-based formulations. In contrast, the use of hybrid finite elements uses continuum-based elements, thus avoiding the problems associated with rotational degrees of freedom. In particular, any given three-dimensional constitutive relations can be directly used within the framework of this formulation. Since the coarse mesh accuracy as compared to a conventional displacement-based formulation is very high, the scheme is cost effective as well. A general formulation is developed for the constrained motion of a given point on a line manifold, using a total Lagrangian method. The multipoint constraint equations are implemented using Lagrange multipliers. Various kinds of joints such as cylindrical, prismatic, and screw joints are implemented within this general framework. Hinge joints such as spherical, universal, and revolute joints are obtained simply by using shared nodes between the bodies. In addition to joints, the formulation and implementation details for a DC motor actuator and for prescribed relative rotation are also presented. Several example problems illustrate the efficacy of the developed formulation.

Structures with governing equations having identical inertial terms but somewhat differing stiffness terms can be termed flexurally analogous. An example of such a structure includes an axially loaded non-uniform beam and an unloaded uniform beam, for which an exact solution exists. We find that there exist shared eigenpairs (frequency and mode shapes) for a particular mode between such structures. Non-uniform beams with uniform axial loads, gravity loaded beams and rotating beams are considered and shared eigenpairs with uniform beams are found. In general, the derived flexural stiffness functions (FSF's) for the non-uniform beams required for the existence of shared eigenpair have internal singularities, but some of the singularities can be removed by an appropriate selection of integration constants using the theory of limits. The derived functions yield an insight into the relationship between the axial load and flexural stiffness of axially loaded beam structures. The derived functions can serve as benchmark solutions for numerical methods. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A finite flexible perforated panel set in a differently perforated rigid baffle is considered. The radiation efficiency from such a panel is derived using a 2-D wavenumber domain formulation. This generalization is later used to represent a more practical case of a perforated panel fixed in an unperforated baffle. The perforations are in the form of an array of uniformly distributed circular holes. A complex impedance model for the holes available in the literature is used. An averaged fluid particle velocity is derived using the continuity equation and the surface pressure is derived using an appropriate momentum equation. The discontinuity in the perforate impedance (due to different hole dimensions or perforation ratio) at the panel-baffle interface is carefully taken into account. It is found that there exists a `coupling' of different wavenumbers of the spatially mean fluid particle velocity field. The change in the resonance frequencies and the modeshapes of the panel due to the perforations is taken into account using the Receptance method. Analytical expressions for the radiated power and radiation efficiency are derived in an integral form and numerical results are presented. Several comparisons are made to understand the radiation efficiency curves. Since both the resistive and reactive components of the hole impedance are taken into account, the model is directly applicable to micro-perforated panels also. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A closed, trans-scale formulation of damage evolution based on the statistical microdamage mechanics is summarized in this paper. The dynamic function of damage bridges the mesoscopic and macroscopic evolution of damage. The spallation in an aluminium plate is studied with this formulation. It is found that the damage evolution is governed by several dimensionless parameters, i.e., imposed Deborah numbers De* and De, Mach number M and damage number S. In particular, the most critical mode of the macroscopic damage evolution, i.e., the damage localization, is deter-mined by Deborah number De+. Deborah number De* reflects the coupling and competition between the macroscopic loading and the microdamage growth. Therefore, our results reveal the multi-scale nature of spallation. In fact, the damage localization results from the nonlinearity of the microdamage growth. In addition, the dependence of the damage rate on imposed Deborah numbers De* and De, Mach number M and damage number S is discussed.
