La poética de lo Icárico

El presente trabajo tiene como centro fundamental el tema de la caída y su relación con la muerte y el lenguaje. Al conjunto de estos elementos hemos dado en denominar Poética de lo Icárico tomando dicho nombre del mito griego de Ícaro. El trabajo de exposición de esta poética aparece configurado en tres capítulos. En el primero se postula un plano para la génesis y el concepto de lo icárico a partir de los tres héroes míticos de la caída: Ícaro, Lucifer y Cristo; el objetivo aquí es identificar y desarrollar los elementos que estructuran esta poética. El segundo capítulo avanza hacia la manifestación de lo icárico en la modernidad, principalmente en autores como Charles Baudelaire, Friedrich Nietzsche, pero, sobre todo, a partir de Baudelaire se analiza una cuarta encarnación del héroe mítico de lo icárico en la figura del poeta moderno; la presencia de Nietzsche está directamente relacionada con la crítica y desmonte de este héroe tal y como llega a Baudelaire, desde el espacio del mito, pero así mismo son importante autores como Lewis Carroll y Carlos Castaneda, quienes preludian ya el desarrollo de la relación de la caída con el lenguaje. La plenitud de este desarrollo se lleva a cabo en el tercer capítulo con el análisis del poema Altazor, del poeta chileno Vicente Huidobro. La tesis que sustenta este capítulo y culmina el trabajo de exposición, plantea el poema de Huidobro como la puesta en plenitud de la poética de lo icárico que se resuelve precisamente en el momento en que Huidobro logra que la caída funcione dentro del poema como su esencia misma, en la medida en que lo determina o determina de manera absoluta el lenguaje con el cual está escrito, y, de este modo, con Huidobro, la relación inicial entre la caída, la muerte y el lenguaje termina siendo la totalidad misma de un poema que, en cuanto a lo icárico, abre para la poesía hispanoamericana nuevas posibilidades de lo poético.

Lewis Fry Richardson's forecast factory - for real

The idea that supercomputers are an important part of making forecasts of the weather and climate is well known amongst the general population. However, the details of their use are somewhat mysterious. A concept used to illustrate many undergraduate numerical weather prediction courses is the idea of a giant 'forecast factory,' conceived by Lewis Fry Richardson in 1922. In this article, a way of using the same idea to communicate key ideas in numerical weather prediction to the general public is outlined and tested amongst children from local schools.

Epoxide ring opening in a zinc(II) complex in water without any Lewis acid catalyst: formation of only one diastereomer out of 2

The epoxide ring in 5,6-dihydro-5,6-epoxy-1,10-phenanthroline (L) opens up in its reaction with 4-methylaniline and 4-methoxyaniline in water in equimolar proportion at room temperature without any Lewis acid catalyst to give a monohydrate of 6-(4-methyl-phenylamino)-5,6-dihydro-1,10-phenanthrolin-5-ol (L′·H2O) and 6-(4-methoxyphenyl-amino)-5,6-dihydro-1,10-phenanthrolin-5-ol (L″) respectively. Reaction time decreases from 72 to 14 h in boiling water. But the yields become less. Reaction of L with Zn(ClO4)2·6H2O in methanol in 3:1 molar ratio at room temperature affords white [ZnL3](ClO4)2·H2O. The X-ray crystal structure of the acetonitrile solvate [ZnL3](ClO4)2·MeCN has been determined which shows that the metal has a distorted octahedral N6 coordination sphere. [ZnL3](ClO4)2·2H2O reacts with 4-methylaniline and 4-methoxyaniline in boiling water in 1:3 molar proportion in the absence of any Lewis acid catalyst to produce [ZnL′3](ClO4)2·4H2O and [ZnL″3](ClO4)2·H2O, respectively in 1–4 h time in somewhat low yield. In the 1H NMR spectra of [ZnL′3](ClO4)2·4H2O and [ZnL″3](ClO4)2·H2O, only one sharp methyl signal is observed implicating that only one diastereomer out of the 23 possibilities is formed. The same diastereomers are obtained when L′·H2O and L″ are reacted directly with Zn(ClO4)2·6H2O in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature in very good yields. Reactions of L′·H2O and L″ with Ru(phen)2Cl2·2H2O (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) in equimolar proportion in methanol–water mixture under refluxing condition lead to the isolation of two diastereomers of [Ru(phen)2L′](ClO4)2·2H2O and [Ru(phen)2L″](ClO4)2·2H2O.

John Lewis Partnership lessons in logical incrementalism and organic growth: a case study and interview with the Chairman, Mr Charlie Mayfield

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how strategy is developed and implemented in an organisation with an unusual ownership model. Partnerships are not a prevalent form of ownership but as this case demonstrates they can be extremely effective. Furthermore this case demonstrates how logical incrementalism can be used to implement major strategic decisions. Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on company documentary evidence and a semi-structured interview with Mr Charlie Mayfield, Chairman of John Lewis Partnership. A chairman has a helicopter view of business whose perspectives are rarely captured by strategy researchers. This case study offers an insight into strategic thinking of a chairman and chief executive of a successful company. Research limitations/implications – The case study and interview offer a unique insight into the rationale behind strategic decisions within a successful partnership that has grown organically in a highly competitive retail market without high gearing. Originality/value – This case study sheds light on strategic moves within partnership. Furthermore, very few case studies offer insight into the thinking of a chief executive who has successfully managed a business in a turbulent environment.

Earl of Aylesford v Morris (1873)

A Characteristic of a landmark case is that it stands for a proposition of law. In Earl of Aylesford v Morris,1 Lord Selborne held that where there existed an inequality between contracting parties, with weakness on one side and an extortionate advantage taken of that weakness on the other, the contract could not stand unless the party claiming the benefit of the contract could rebut the presumption by establishing that the transaction was ‘fair, just and reasonable’. This chapter examines the historical circumstances behind the formulation of this proposition.

Home range and habitat use by the roadside hawk, Rupornis magnirostris (Gmelin, 1788) (Aves: Falcaniformes) in southeastern Brazil

Although most raptor species are found mainly in the tropics, information on their home range and spatial requirements in the Neotropics is still scarce. In this study, we used radio telemetry to evaluate the home range and the habitat use and selection of five Roadside hawks, Rupornis magnirostris (Gmelin, 1788) in a heterogeneous landscape in southeastern Brazil. The average home range size calculated using the adaptive kernel method (95% isopleth) was 126.1ha (47.4-266.7ha), but using the minimum convex polygon method (95% isopleth) it was 143.54ha (32.6-382.3ha). The roadside hawk explored a wide variety of habitats, most of them opportunistically, as suggested in the literature. Despite this, habitat quality could influence home range size and promote habitat selection. The observation of habitat use as expected, as well as the relatively small home range size, could be related to the generalist/opportunistic behaviour of the roadside hawk.

New insights on the Lewis acidity of diorganolead(IV) compounds: Diphenyllead(IV) complexes with N,O,S-chelating ligands

The reactions of PbPh2(OAC)(2) with alkylglyoxylate thiosemicarbazones (HRGTSC, R = Et, Bu) afforded complexes of the type [PbPh2(GTSC)] center dot H2O, [PbPh2(RGTSC)(2)] and [PbPh2Cl(BUGTSC)]. The structures of HRGTSC (R = Me, Et, Bu), [PbPh2(OAc)(RGTSC)](R = Me, Et, Bu), [PbPh2Cl(BuGTSC)] and [PbPh2(GTSC)] center dot H2O have been studied by X-ray diffraction. [PbPh2(OAc)(RGTSC)] and [PbPh2(GTSC)] center dot H2O have [PbC2NO3S] kernels and the coordination sphere of the metal is pentagonal bipyramidal. [PbPh2Cl(BuGTSC)] has a [PbC2NOSCI] kernel and the coordination geometry around lead is pentagonal bipyramidal with one vacant site. Analysis of the bond distances in [PbPh2(GTSC)] center dot H2O suggests a significant affinity between diphenyllead(IV) and carboxylate donor groups, supporting a borderline acidic character for this organometallic cation. H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra in DMSO-d(6) suggest the partial dissociation of the acetate in [PbPh2(OAc)(RGTSC)] solutions and indicate some differences in the coordination mode of the two RGTSC(-) ligands in [PbPh2(RGTSC)(2)] complexes.
