Purpose. To evaluate the effects of captopril (Cpt) on carbohydrate metabolism and growth hormone (GH) in adults hypertensive obese patients with normal (NGT) or impaired (IGT) glucose tolerance and left ventricular hypertrophy. Methods. Ten patients (53 ± 8 years), 8 women and 2 men, white, body mass index (BMI) ≥ 26 kg/m2, left ventricular mass index (LVMI) > 135 g/m2 in man and > 110 g/m2 in woman, with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 95-115 mmHg after 3 weeks of placebo, were identified by oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT-75 g) as either with NGT or IGT, and treated with Cpt 25 mg t.i.d. for 8 weeks. At the 8 weeks, dosage was increased to 50 mg b.i.d. if DBP > 90 mmHg or the decrease of the DBP < 10%, during the next 8 weeks. OGTT and clonidine tests (0,04 mg/kg) with determinations, every 30 minutes of glucose, insulin, and GH during 2 hours, were performed. Results. Cpt lowered SBP and DBP in the NGT group and IGT group. The LVMI and the left ventricular mass (LVM) decreased in the IGT group with no significant change in the NGT group. Cpt promoted in the IGT group decrease in the area under the curve (AUC) of glucose, and AUC of insulin, with increase of the AUC of the percent of the β cell function, AUC of HC, and insulin sensitivity index with no significantly change in the NGT group. Conclusion. Adults hypertensive obese patients with IGT had decreased significantly in mean fasting level of GH concentrations compared to age, race, and BMI matched hypertensive patients with NGT. Treatment with Cpt induced a significant increased of the GH, with improvement of the metabolism in patients with IGT.

Staphylococcus aureus is a very important hospital and community pathogen. This species is related to supurative disease, systemic and widespread metastatic lesions. The ability of S. aureus to develop resistance to antibiotics, more recently to methicillin, associates this bacteria with epidemic outbreaks of severe nosocomial infection. The source of staphylococcal infection is a patient with a staphylococcal lesion or a career member of the hospital staff. We aimed to detect the frequency of S. aureus isolated from anterior nares and oral cavities among the hospital staff in Bauru - SP, and to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates. Within 213 of the staff members analyzed. S. aureus was found in 94 (44.13%) of careers, with 47 (50%) of nasal carriers, 23 (24.4%) of oral carriers and 24 (25.5%) of both carriers. The biochemical characteristics analyzed for the species identification were similar to S. aureus ATCC 29213. All strains identified as S. aureus showed varied sensibility to the antimicrobial agents tested. No vancomicin resistant strains and only 8 (8.5%) strains with oxacilin resistance were found.

Enterobacter spp. are considered important causing agents of infection, specially in hospitalized individuals. The natural resistance of these microorganisms and the great facility to develop resistance to new antimicrobial agents make this genus an important object of study. In this work, 176 strains isolated from various clinical samples were used from hospitalized patients (University Hospital Domingos Leonardo Cerávolo) and from clinic patients (Clinical Laboratory from Unoeste), both situated in Presidente Prudente - SP. E. cloacae (78.9%), E. aerogenes (7.9%) and E. (pantoea) agglomerans (3.9%) were the ones more frequently isolated. Eleven antimicrobial agents were tested by the disk diffusion method and around 90% of the strains presented resistance to the cephalotin, ampicillin and cefaclor. Strains of E. (pantoea) agglomerans presented wide profile of sensibility However one strain of E. cloacae presented resistance to all the antimicrobial agents. The antimicrobial agents with greater inhibitory activity were imipenem and cefepime, for this reason these antimicrobial agents could be the treatment of choice in emergencial therapeutic. This emergencial therapy can be applied with relative security, whereas the data obtained in this study show homogeneity in the profile of sensibility to these antimicrobial agents, independent of the infection site and from the isolated species. The ESBL enzyme could not be detected in no one of the strains by the double diffusion test.

The aim of this study was the assessment of isolation frequency and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of nonfermenting Gram-negative bacilli. Ninety eight strains of nonfermenting Gram-negative bacilli, isolated from several clinical materials of patients admited at the Dr. Domingos Leonardo Cerávolo University Hospital and at Dr. Odilo Antunes Siqueira State Hospital, as well as from every outpatient; assisted at Laboratory of Clinical Analysis of Unoeste University, Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, in the period of October 1999 to April 2001 were analyzed. The most frequent species were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (65.3%) and Acinetobacter baumannii (23.5%). The frequency of the other isolated species was smaller than 2.5%. In the antimicrobial susceptibility tests, the two species more prevalent showed high resistance. The antibiotic most active in vitro was the imipenem, with 79.6% in microdiluition method, and 76.6% in diffusion method, for Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains and 100.0% in both microdiluition and diffusion methods, for Acinetobacter baumannii. The cephalosporins of third generation, the ciprofloxacin and the aminoglycosides, presented percentage of susceptibility varying from 22.4 to 69.7%. These results bring implications to the emergency use of the antimicrobial agents in the treatment of patients with severe infection.

This work aims to express the production and consumption changes occurred in the State of São Paulo in line with the logistics, the systems of movement and the economic flows. The mentioned productive and consumption devolutions towards the interior just was possible in the fast rhythm, with the hierarchical combination of some basic elements, such as: 1) the logistics as strategy, planning and management (including in the concession of public services to the private enterprise) of transports, storage and communications; 2) the technological improvement of systems of movement (infrastructure and means of transportation) and 3) the economic flows (goods, services, informations, capital gains and people) in the territory. Thus, we go to an analysis of the impacts of the fifth logistics revolution and the alternatives between systems of movement and territorial fluidity in the service of corporative demands in the space pertaining to the State of São Paulo. © Copyright Scripta Nova, 2009.

Introduction: Calculated indexes from laboratory measurements and the determination of plasma markers are commonly used in cardiovascular risk assessment. Objective: To use triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio, estimate of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle size and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels to the clinical and laboratorial assessment of coronary risk among patients with coronary disease. Material and methods: Sixty patients were chosen accordingly, 36 female (F) (65 ± 9 years of age) and 24 male (M) (55 ± 10 years of age) diagnosed with stable ischemic cardiopathy at Ana Neri Hospital, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The investigation was carried out at the Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory of the College of Pharmacy at Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Blood samples were collected after a 12-hour fast to determine hs-CRP, lipid profile and risk indicators. All data were assessed through Syncron LX®20 Beckman Coulter. The inferential analysis results were considered significant when p ≤ 5%. Data analysis was carried out with GraphPad Prism® (4.03 version) software. Results: Data analysis showed a positive correlation between hs-CRP and triglycerides/HDL-C ratio only among women (r = 0.4; p = 0.0442), n = 36. The analysis of other parameters did not show any significance. Conclusion: The triglycerides/HDL-C ratio and hs-CRP may be used as indicators of increase in cardiovascular risk among women with coronary artery disease (CAD).

The cephalalgias are frequently associated with the temporomandibular disorders being common to find an increase of pain sensitivity in these patients. Thus, the objective of present study was to assess the sensitivity to palpation in patients presenting with chronic temporomandibular disorders comparing two groups one with headache and other without it, respectively. The temporomandibular disorders and the primary cephalalgias were diagnosed according the Diagnostic Criteria for the Research of Temporomandibular Disorders and by a questionnaire based on the International Classification of the Cephalalgias (2004). Location, assessment and grouping of muscular and articular areas for palpation were carried out according to the Diagnostic Criteria for above mentioned disorders, considering bilaterally the masseter muscle, the temporalis muscle, the cervical region and the temporomandibular joint. Sample included 213 (88.0 %) of women and 29 (12.0 %) men with a mean age of 37.41 years. The mean of number of zones positive to palpation in the groups without headaches, tension headache, migraine and daily chronic headache were: 12.43, 14.38, 15.21 and 15.62 (p= 0.107) (min 2 max 22). The areas of temporalis muscle showed significant differences among groups (p= 0.007). The number of painful points was not statistically different among groups and only in the temporalis muscle there were differences with statistical significant to palpation.

The application of fungicides in the aerial organs is control strategy to macrospora spot caused by fungus Stenocarpella macrospora. The objective of this study was to determine the sensitivity of S. macrospora to fungicides by inhibition of mycelial growth (MG) and conidial germination (CG). It was eval uated 12 fungicides belonging to the chemical groups of the benzimidazoles, triazoles and strobilurins, six concentrations and two isolates of the fungus (SC and MT). The fungicides were diluted in sterile distilled water and added to the culture medium of potato dextrose agar (mycelium) and water-agar (spore) after sterilization. The percentage of inhibition of MC and CG was calculed in comparison with control, estimating of 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50). The fungicides tested were effective in inhibiting the MC. The IC50 was less than 1 ppm for all fungicides. There was no difference between isolates. The inhibition of CG had higher fungitoxicity strobilurins, and the IC50 was between 0.0035 and 0.03 ppm, and the isolated SC showed the higher sensitivity to the fungicides. The IC50 values obtained for fungicides and specific S. macrospora will be useful in monitoring the sensitivity of the fungus, especially in regions with intense demand for fungicides in corn.
