Transport is one the essential services for the development of most economic activities. In the forestry sector, the main transport used to carry wood from the forest to local consumption is road. The transport increases the producing costs of wood and may be responsible of a high percentage in the final price of the wood sold in the industry. To reduce the company’s costs and increase the efficiency of forest production those transport activities must be analyzed and improved. In that context, an economic analysis is the main objective of this work, evaluating three different types of log transport from a sawmill in São Paulo´s Southwest region. For this, a data collection was done to compound the costs and the incomes of timber transport, and that way, to do the economic analyses of each transport. The monitoring activities were done in the second 2013 half-year and the research achieved economic viability results utilizing tools and methods of Economic Engineering

There are many studies about longitudinal modulus of elasticity of wood, but you can´t say the same of transverse modulus, especially for conifers. The study aimed to characterize and compare the species Pinus elliottii var. elliottii and Pinus elliottii var. elliottii x Pinus cariabeae hondurensis (hybrid), and the longitudinal modulus of elasticity (E) and lateral (G) in bending, to analyze the modulus of elasticity in different spaces and to verify the species studied the ideal range is equal to 21 times the height of the specimen, as prescribed in the normative document NBR 7190/1997, as well as analyzing the relationship G = E/20 defined in the normative document NBR 7190/1997. The wood came from the farm located in Paranapanema, split at the mill São José and the rest of the work was conducted at the Experimental Itapeva Campus - UNESP. Were removed fourteen specimens of each species. The average values of the modulus of elasticity and cross were, respectively, 5828 MPa and 452 MPa for Pinus elliottii var. elliottii and 6407 MPa and 320 MPa for the species of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii x Pinus cariabeae hondurensis (hybrid). The trend lines for the plotted graphs showed an exponential behavior to near linear 21he will equal the constant after this value. We have found the relationship G = E/13, for Pinus elliottii var. elliottii and G = E/20 for hybrid. The results of the modulus and strength for Pinus elliottii var. elliottii and the hybrid were lower than those reported in the literature, showing that this batch inferior quality to apply to structures

This study aimed to analyze the increase of yield provided by a software optimization cutting in a pine sawmill, located at southwest region of São Paulo, city of Itapeva. First were measured 10 logs that were processed by conventional sawing system by measuring the volume of products in the process output. Then using a cutting optimization software, that generated cuts diagrams, 10 logs, from 25 to 26 cm diametrical class, were processed by sawing system optimized. For the conventional sawing, the value found to yield was 41.80%, whereas for the unfolding optimized showed the value of 61.79%, resulting in a difference of 19.99%. This study shows that there is room for significant improvement of performance in sawmills sawing with the use of optimization software as the employee at work

Bamboo has been studied because of its peculiar mechanical properties and numerous possibilities of use, besides being a fast-growing grass and short cutting cycle. This study aimed to analyze the mechanical characteristics of wood-bamboo composite material, where the samples were developed from the combination of layers of bamboo as a structural reinforcement in solid pieces of pine and EGP panel parts. The species of wood used was Pinus taeda, and the bamboo species Guadua angustifolia and Dendrocalamus giganteus. All work was conducted at the Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP in the laboratory of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Wood. Tests including the density and tension parallel to grain of the bamboo species used and the static bending of composites in order to use this in the furniture industry. For the tests have been used as a basis the requirements of the normative document NBR 7190/97. The values obtained in the tests showed a significant increase in strength and stiffness compared to unreinforced parts, where there was an increase in MOE and MOR in static bending in all specimens used in evidence. The results showed the possibility of reducing sections in furniture components and the possibility of improving the mechanical properties of parts with defects found in wood of Pinus Itapeva region of São Paulo

With the growing world energy demand mainly from developing countries like Brazil, Russia, India and China, the search for efficient sources of energy becomes a challenge for the coming years. Among the most widely used alternative sources, biomass is the one that grows in a more pronounced way. This study will assess the real possibility of having it as a heat source in an Organic Rankine Cycle, which employ heat transfer fluids as working fluids instead of water. From a regional data collection in agricultural production and their potential rice production and the resulting husk was defined as more appropriate. The availability of husks together with an amount of eucalyptus wood, provided by a company in the region on a monthly basis, were analyzed, and the low participation of the wood was discarded by the thermal contribution of little significance. Based on this, it was established the calorific value of fuel for thermodynamic calculations and the cycle to be used. It was then carried out the choice of working fluid from the literature and their availability in the library of software used for the simulations, the Engineering Equation Solver - ESS. The fluid most appropriate for the burning of biomass, Octamethyltrisiloxane (OMTS), was not included in the software and so the R227ea and R134a were selected. After the initial parameters modeling definition, as condensing temperature, efficiency and live steam conditions, the simulations were performed, and only the R227ea remained within the feasible thermodynamic and technological ranges. With this fluid the turbine power output was 265.7 [kW] for a scenario of 24 hours/day burning, 800.3 [kW] to biomass burning for 8 hours/day and 2134 [kW] for burning only 3 hours/day. In Brazil there are many cases of cities that suffer from flooding. It often destroys much of the structure of the city, and isolates many families. Relying on emergency measures for these cases and similar cases is of utmost importance. This paper proposes the development of a project of a timber bridge that can be used in emergency situations such as occurs in situations of floods and especially on side roads. It is considered one type of structural bridge which has, among other characteristics, an easy transportation and assembly of the elements. The development is carried out, at this early stage of the project, only about the verification and sizing of structural elements of the superstructure of the bridge. For this purpose, it relies on computer programs, and fundamentally on PCFrame Visual Taco. The first allows you to model the structure and determine the efforts of calculating the elements, and the second one assists at the scaling and the verifications in accordance with the Brazilian technical standards for timber bridges. The wood used in the project comes from the tree Eucalyptus saligna, which is easy to acquaint and manipulate and comes from the region Vale do Paraíba. The bridge in this case of application should have the characteristics mentioned below: short execution time, simplicity of structure and an assembly of a relatively low cost

The Brazilian textile industry has been a highlight in the global economy. Connected with this high economic performance there is the water consumption and the generation of great volumes of wastewater which present high concentrations of dyes and chemical substances. One of the main techniques used in the treatment of textile effluents is adsorption, which has the activated carbon as the main adsorbent. Recently, studies have been developed to find alternative materials to activated carbon and exhibiting good adsorption capacity of dyes. The aim of this work is to study the potential of sawdust as adsorbent of low cost to remove the dye Direct Green 26. The results of this type of dye removal were obtained through the study of adsorption isotherms obtained by spectrophotometry in the UV-visible region analyzed by the Langmuir model. Finally, a comparison was made of these results with those of other adsorbents. Results showed that the average removal of dye, using sawdust, was 78.8% for an initial concentration of 500mg / L and the maximum adsorption capacity of 119mg / g. These results demonstrate the great potential of sawdust as an adsorbent for the dye Direct Green 26.

This paper had the objective of determining the transition regions between the juvenile and mature wood of Corymbia citriodora (Eucalyptus citriodora) of 29 years of age from the Experimental Station of Forest Science (EECFA-LCF/ESALQ-USP), located in Anhembi, in the State of São Paulo. The regions of juvenile and mature wood were characterized through anatomical studies - axial fiber length - following the recommendations of the International Association of Wood Anatomists (1989) using disks at the DBH of the trees. The measurements of fiber length were made in equipment for acquisition, diagnosis and image analysis. Five slices were made for every centimeter, in the radial direction and six fiber lengths per slice were measured, producing 30 measurements per sample region. In the total, 1740 lengths of fiber were measured in three disks that were studied. Results indicate a trend of accentuated and linear increase for the length of fibers, from the pith to 11 cm of radial of about 79%. Between 12 cm and 19 cm of the radius, fibers length remained almost constant, and from that point on, the fiber length tended to slightly increase to the bark. It can be concluded that for these trees, at this height of sampling, when the tree has 29 years of age, the extension of the juvenile wood goes up to 52% of its radius.

O tema desta pesquisa consiste no desenvolvimento das técnicas de aplicação da madeira de reflorestamento como base na construção habitacional de interesse social. Considera-se suas potencialidades para a realização de uma arquitetura que seja socialmente justa, tecnicamente viável, e acessível economicamente através de uma sistemática por autoconstrução. A pesquisa apresenta, de maneira geral, o estudo e sistematização de tecnologias construtivas em madeira, aplicadas na região sul do país, em especial na cidade de Florianópolis/SC. Buscam-se, portanto, indicadores de desempenho no processo de produção da habitação, para contribuir no aperfeiçoamento dos sistemas construtivos, do ponto de vista da durabilidade, e também na proposição de novas alternativas.

This paper presents the determination of a mean solar radiation year and of a typical meteorological year for the region of Funchal in the Madeira Island, Portugal. The data set includes hourly mean and extreme values for air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed and hourly mean values for solar global and diffuse radiation for the period 2004-2014, with maximum data coverage of 99.7%. The determination of the mean solar radiation year consisted, in a first step, in the average of all values for each pair hour/day and, in a second step, in the application of a five days centred moving average of hourly values. The determination of the typical meteorological year was based on Finkelstein-Schafer statistics, which allows to obtain a complete year of real measurements through the selection and combination of typical months, preserving the long term averages while still allowing the analysis of short term events. The typical meteorological year validation was carried out through the comparison of the monthly averages for the typical year with the long term monthly averages. The values obtained were very close, so that the typical meteorological year can accurately represent the long term data series. The typical meteorological year can be used in the simulation of renewable energy systems, namely solar energy systems, and for predicting the energy performance of buildings.
