Ancillary service plays a key role in maintaining operation security of the power system in a competitive electricity market. The spinning reserve is one of the most important ancillary services that should be provided effectively. This paper presents the design of an integrated market for energy and spinning reserve service with particular emphasis on coordinated dispatch of bulk power and spinning reserve services. A new market dispatching mechanism has been developed to minimize the cost of service while maintaining system security. Genetic algorithms (GA) are used for finding the global optimal solutions for this dispatch problem. Case studies and corresponding analyses have been carried out to demonstrate and discuss the efficiency and usefulness of the proposed method.

A multiwavelength generation in a random distributed feedback fiber laser based on hybrid Raman and erbium gain and a Lyot all-fiber spectral filter is demonstrated for the first time. The use of erbium-doped fiber allows a multi-wavelength generation to be achieved at lower pump powers in comparison with random fiber lasers based on Raman gain only. The operating bandwidth and flatness of power distribution between different lines in generation are also improved in the hybrid gain configuration.

This thesis describes an investigation into methods for controlling the mode distribution in multimode optical fibres. The major contributions presented in this thesis are summarised below. Emerging standards for Gigabit Ethernet transmission over multimode optical fibre have led to a resurgence of interest in the precise control, and specification, of modal launch conditions. In particular, commercial LED and OTDR test equipment does not, in general, comply with these standards. There is therefore a need for mode control devices, which can ensure compliance with the standards. A novel device consisting of a point-load mode-scrambler in tandem with a mode-filter is described in this thesis. The device, which has been patented, may be tuned to achieve a wide range of mode distributions and has been implemented in a ruggedised package for field use. Various other techniques for mode control have been described in this work, including the use of Long Period Gratings and air-gap mode-filters. Some of the methods have been applied to other applications, such as speckle suppression and in sensor technology. A novel, self-referencing, sensor comprising two modal groups in the Mode Power Distribution has been designed and tested. The feasibility of a two-channel Mode Group Diversity Multiplexed system has been demonstrated over 985m. A test apparatus for measuring mode distribution has been designed and constructed. The apparatus consists of a purpose-built video microscope, and comprehensive control and analysis software written in Visual Basic. The system may be fitted with a Silicon camera or an InGaAs camera, for measurement in the 850nm and 130nm transmission windows respectively. A limitation of the measurement method, when applied to well-filled fibres, has been identified and an improvement to the method has been proposed, based on modelled Laguerre Gauss field solutions.

Multiwavelength lasing in the random distributed feedback fiber laser is demonstrated by employing an all fiber Lyot filter. Stable multiwavelength generation is obtained, with each line exhibiting subnanometer line-widths. A flat power distribution over multiple lines is obtained, which indicates that the power between lines is redistributed in nonlinear mixing processes. The multiwavelength generation is observed both in first and second Stokes waves. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

We report on the effective side detection of radiation-mode out-coupling from blazed fiber Bragg gratings (BFBGs) fabricated in single-mode fiber (SMF) and multimode fiber (MMF). The far-field radiation power distribution from BFBGs have been measured achieving a high spatial-spectral resolution (0.17 mm/nm). We have also investigated comparatively the transmission-loss characteristics of BFBGs in both fiber types, fabricated using phase-mask and holographic inscription techniques. Our results reveal clearly that the radiation out-coupling from BFBGs is significantly stronger and spectrally more confined in MMF than in SMF.

Multiwavelength lasing in the random distributed feedback fiber laser is demonstrated by employing an all fiber Lyot filter. Stable multiwavelength generation is obtained, with each line exhibiting sub-nanometer line-widths. A flat power distribution over multiple lines is also obtained, which indicates the contribution of nonlinear wave mixing towards power redistribution and equalization in the system. The multiwavelength generation is observed simultaneously in first and second Stokes waves. © 2014 SPIE.

Lasers with random distributed feedback (DFB) owing to Rayleigh scattering in optical fibers [1] have attracted a great interest: a number of papers demonstrating new laser schemes and applications have been proposed [2-7] recently. Moreover, the generation output power and, more generally, generation power distribution could be described both analytically and numerically within simple balance models [8-9]. However, spectral properties of random DFB fiber lasers are not studied except some attempt made in [10]. Generation spectrum of random DFB fiber laser is quite broad (more than 1 nm), and physical mechanisms of its formation and broadening are still unclear. There is no any practical solution up to date to minimize the generation spectrum width. Here we experimentally show the way to minimize the generation spectral width. © 2013 IEEE.

We demonstrate that a distributed Raman amplification scheme based on random distributed feedback (DFB) fiber laser enables bidirectional second-order Raman pumping without increasing relative intensity noise (RIN) of the signal. This extends the reach of 10 × 116 Gb/s DP-QPSK WDM transmission up to 7915 km, compared with conventional Raman amplification schemes. Moreover, this scheme gives the longest maximum transmission distance among all the Raman amplification schemes presented in this paper, whilst maintaining relatively uniform and symmetric signal power distribution, and is also adjustable in order to be highly compatible with different nonlinearity compensation techniques, including mid-link optical phase conjugation (OPC) and nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT).

Electrical energy is an essential resource for the modern world. Unfortunately, its price has almost doubled in the last decade. Furthermore, energy production is also currently one of the primary sources of pollution. These concerns are becoming more important in data-centers. As more computational power is required to serve hundreds of millions of users, bigger data-centers are becoming necessary. This results in higher electrical energy consumption. Of all the energy used in data-centers, including power distribution units, lights, and cooling, computer hardware consumes as much as 80%. Consequently, there is opportunity to make data-centers more energy efficient by designing systems with lower energy footprint. Consuming less energy is critical not only in data-centers. It is also important in mobile devices where battery-based energy is a scarce resource. Reducing the energy consumption of these devices will allow them to last longer and re-charge less frequently. Saving energy in computer systems is a challenging problem. Improving a system's energy efficiency usually comes at the cost of compromises in other areas such as performance or reliability. In the case of secondary storage, for example, spinning-down the disks to save energy can incur high latencies if they are accessed while in this state. The challenge is to be able to increase the energy efficiency while keeping the system as reliable and responsive as before. This thesis tackles the problem of improving energy efficiency in existing systems while reducing the impact on performance. First, we propose a new technique to achieve fine grained energy proportionality in multi-disk systems; Second, we design and implement an energy-efficient cache system using flash memory that increases disk idleness to save energy; Finally, we identify and explore solutions for the page fetch-before-update problem in caching systems that can: (a) control better I/O traffic to secondary storage and (b) provide critical performance improvement for energy efficient systems.

A Waveguide Microgripper utilizes flexible optical waveguides as gripping arms, which provide the physical means for grasping a microobject, while simultaneously enabling light to be delivered and collected. This unique capability allows extensive optical characterization of the structure being held such as transmission, reflection or fluorescence. One of the simplest capabilities of the waveguide microgripper is to be able to detect the presence of a microobject between the microgripper facets by monitoring the transmitted intensity of light coupled through the facets. The intensity of coupled light is expected to drop when there is an object obstructing the path of light. The optical sensing and characterization function of the microgripper is a strong function of the optical power incident on the structure of interest. Hence it is important to understand the factors affecting the power distribution across the facet. The microgripper is also capable of detecting the fluorescence. This capability of microgripper is expected to have applications in medical, bio-medical and related fields.
