Se considera que la historia de la veterinaria, como profesión o actividad organizada, tiene su inicio no a partir de 1793 con la apertura de Real Colegio Escuela de Veterinaria de Madrid, sino que se remonta a la regularización oficial de un arte liberal de la albeitería en el año 1500, con la creación del Tribunal del Protoalbeiterato. A partir de ese momento y distribuidos por toda España, trabajan los albéitares como herradores y sanadores de animales, dentro de los conocimientos que se tenía entonces. Durante tres siglos, hombres muy diversos ejercieron primero el arte de la albeitería y después la profesión de la veterinaria y convivieron durante 50 años de manera oficial. Sin embargo, la veterinaria en femenino se estrena tímidamente en 1925 y ha evolucionado durante todos estos años para encontrarse en 2015 en una situación de superioridad numérica pero desigualdad según el ámbito profesional, el nivel de responsabilidad y el nivel de remuneración...

[ES]En el campo de la medicina veterinaria actual las opciones informáticas disponibles para la investigación y el análisis biomecánico se encuentran limitadas a herramientas que usan tecnología punta para realizar análisis y que requieren de un equipo especializado de alto coste. Hay un espectro de posibilidades por debajo de ese mercado en el que es posible cubrir otras necesidades más comunes. El presente Proyecto Fin de Carrera utiliza la metodología de desarrollo iterativo e incremental para la creación de una solución software con el objetivo de facilitar la labor de evaluación y diagnóstico de animales en el campo de la veterinaria clínica, tanto en la prevención de enfermedades como para la rehabilitación en caso de accidente o herida...

Se analizó un estudio de caso atendido en la Clínica “VIDA ” el 21 de noviembre del 2013. Inicialmente se procedió a la valoración de su estado físico y de salud considerando la edad de la paciente. A partir de la inspección clínica y anamnesis se procedió a brindar un diagnóstico de la patología que presentaba, para fundamentar las principales causas y consecuencia que gen eran las patologías reproductivas en la especie canina. El estudio de caso es una investigación cualitativa de tipo participativa, cuya base es la descripción de sucesos ocurridos en un momento determinado el cual consistía en el análisis de un estudio de caso que no pueden duplicarse por las condiciones individuales del sujeto y de su entorno en particular . El paciente era una perra de 12 años , llamada princesa que t enía completo su programa de vacunación y desparasitación. Después del último celo tuvo descargas vaginal es hemorrágicas , durante 6 días el cual alarmó a la dueña, ya que no mostró síntomas característicos de postraciones . Era alimentada con concentrado, su estro era normal . Se le brindó atención ambulatoria y s e le realizaron exámenes clínicos , realizando la anamnesis , sin mostrar dolor a la palpación, no se detectaron masas abdominales, no se realizó exploración vagina l debido a que la paciente no habí a sido incorporada para reproducción. Se determinó como piómetra en diagnostico presu ntivo, aplicándole vit. K p or tres días y al cuarto día una dosis de medroxiprogesterona para detener el sangrado. A l no haber efecto en el sangrado, se optó por la extirpación quirúrgica del útero el cual se real izó sin problemas, encontrándose: cuernos uterinos y útero hiperplásicos , endometrio con fibromas y pequeñas neoplasias. Se identificó neoplasia uterina causada por quistes ováricos, estrés, trastorno psicológico de adaptabilidad a la ausencia de la dueña, creando un desorde n en las estructuras de cascada del sistema endocrino, viéndose afectado por la relació n de la edad de la paciente. Terminada la cirugía se le entregó la mascota a su dueña junto con las indicaciones postoperatoria pero ya en su casa la paciente murió por complicaciones post quirúrgica no identificadas .

Machado de Assis (1839-1908) is considered the most important Brazilian writer and a great universal literary figure. Little is know about his medical, personal and family history. He hid his «disease» as much as possible. Machado referred to «strange things» having happened to him in his childhood. He described seizures as «nervous phenomena», «absenses», «my illness». Laet observed a seizure and described it as: «... when Machado approached us and spoke to me in disconnected words. I looked at him in surprise and found his features altered. Knowing that from time to time he had nervous problems,... and only permitted Machado take the Laranjeiras Street car, when I saw that he was completely well». A photographically documented seizure is shown. Alencar wrote, «The preoccupation with health was frequent: either he was having the consequences of a fit or was foreboding one». It is clear that Machado presented localized symptomatic epilepsy with complex partial seizures secondarily generalized of unknown etiology. The seizures which began in infancy or childhood had remission in adolescence and then recurred in his thirties and became more frequent in his later years. His depression got markedly worse with age. In our opinion, the greatest consequence of Machado's epilepsy, was his psychological suffering due to the prejudice of the times. Despite this Machado showed all his genius, which is still actual and universal.

Estudo conduzido com o objetivo de contribuir para o planejamento e implementação de políticas de qualificação profissional no campo da saúde. Foram analisados 14 cursos de graduação da área da saúde: biomedicina, ciências biológicas, educação física, enfermagem, farmácia, fisioterapia, fonoaudiologia, medicina, medicina veterinária, nutrição, odontologia, psicologia, serviço social e terapia ocupacional, no período de 1991 a 2008. Dados sobre número de ingressantes, taxa de ocupação de vagas, distribuição de concluintes por habitante, gênero e renda familiar foram coletados a partir dos bancos do Ministério da Educação. Para o curso de medicina, a relação foi de 40 candidatos por vaga nas instituições públicas contra 10 nas privadas. A maioria dos ingressantes era composta por mulheres. A região Sudeste concentrou 57% dos concluintes, corroborando o desequilíbrio de distribuição regional das oportunidades de formação de profissionais de saúde e indicando a necessidade de políticas de incentivo à redução dessas desigualdades.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a widely spread zoonotic disease. In Brazil the disease is caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi. Peridomestic sandflies acquire the etiological agent by feeding on blood of infected reservoir animals, such as dogs or wildlife. The disease is endemic in Brazil and epidemic foci have been reported in densely populated cities all over the country. Many clinical features of Leishmania infection are related to the host-parasite relationship, and many candidate virulence factors in parasites that cause VL have been studied such as A2 genes. The A2 gene was first isolated in 1994 and then in 2005 three new alleles were described in Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum. In the present study we amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced the A2 gene from the genome of a clonal population of L. (L.) infantum chagasi VL parasites. The L. (L.) infantum chagasi A2 gene was amplified, cloned, and sequenced in. The amplified fragment showed approximately 90% similarity with another A2 allele amplified in Leishmania (Leishmania) donovani and in L.(L.) infantum described in literature. However, nucleotide translation shows differences in protein amino acid sequence, which may be essential to determine the variability of A2 genes in the species of the L. (L.) donovani complex and represents an additional tool to help understanding the role this gene family may have in establishing virulence and immunity in visceral leishmaniasis. This knowledge is important for the development of more accurate diagnostic tests and effective tools for disease control.

Ehrlichiosis is a disease caused by rickettsial organisms belonging to the genus Ehrlichia. In Brazil, molecular and serological studies have evaluated the occurrence of Ehrlichia species in dogs, cats, wild animals and humans. Ehrlichia canis is the main species found in dogs in Brazil, although E. ewingii infection has been recently suspected in five dogs. Ehrlichia chaffeensis DNA has been detected and characterized in mash deer, whereas E. muris and E. ruminantium have not yet been identified in Brazil. Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis caused by E. canis appears to be highly endemic in several regions of Brazil, however prevalence data are not available for several regions. Ehrlichia canis DNA also has been detected and molecularly characterized in three domestic cats, and antibodies against E. canis were detected in free-ranging Neotropical felids. There is serological evidence suggesting the occurrence of human ehrlichiosis in Brazil but its etiologic agent has not yet been established. Improved molecular diagnostic resources for laboratory testing will allow better identification and characterization of ehrlichial organisms associated with human ehrlichiosis in Brazil.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is an emerging disease most likely caused by Rickettsia rickettsii. The objective of the present study was to estimate the seroprevalence of BSF rickettsia infections in equines from six horse farms located in Londrina County, Paraná, Southern Brazil. Six owners of horse farms situated in Cambé, Santa Fé, Guaraci and Londrina municipalities participated in the study. All farms were located in areas where BSF has not been reported. A total of 273 horses were sampled and their sera were tested by indirect Immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using R. rickettsii and R. parkeri antigens. Titers equal to and greater than 64 were considered positive. Of 273 sera tested, 15 (5.5%) reacted to R. rickettsii and 5 (1.8%) to R. parkeri. Five out of the six farms studied revealed seropositive animals and seropositivity rate ranged from 0 to 13%. The titers ranged from 64 to 512, and four samples had a titer of 512. Nine animals reacted to R. rickettsii with titers four-fold higher than those for R. parkeri. These results suggest that horses in Northern Paraná may have been exposed to rickettsiae identical or closely related to R. rickettsii.

The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of Cryptosporidium in domestic animals in rural properties surrounding rain forest fragments within the municipality of Teodoro Sampaio, southeastern Brazil. Conventional sucrose flotation method followed by molecular characterization of the parasites by sequencing PCR products amplified from SSU rRNA gene were used. Stool samples were collected from domestic animals raised as pets and livestock in all rural properties surrounding three forest fragments. Samples from cattle (197), equine (63), pigs (25), sheep (11), and dogs (28) were collected from 98 rural properties. The frequency of occurrence of Cryptosporidium within each animal species was 3.0% (6/197) among cattle and 10.7% (3/28) among dogs. Cryptosporidium was not detected in stool samples from equine, sheep, and pigs. All sequences obtained from the six samples of calves showed molecular identity with Cryptosporidium andersoni while all sequences from dog samples were similar to C. canis. The frequency of occurrence of Cryptosporidium in these domestic animal species was low. The absence of C. parvum in the present study suggests that the zoonotic cycle of cryptosporidiosis may not be relevant in the region studied. The presence of Cryptosporidium species seldom described in humans may be, otherwise, important for the wild fauna as these animals are a source of infection and dissemination of this protozoan to other animal species. The impact and magnitude of infection by C. andersoni in wild ruminants and C. canis in wild canids have to be assessed in future studies to better understand the actual importance of these species in this region.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is a vector-borne zoonosis caused by Rickettsia rickettsii bacteria. Dogs can be host sentinels for this bacterium. The aim of the study was to determine the presence of antibodies against Rickettsia spp. in dogs from the city of São José dos Pinhais, State of Paraná, Southern Brazil, where a human case of BSF was first reported in the state. Between February 2006 and July 2007, serum samples from 364 dogs were collected and tested at 1:64 dilutions by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) against R. rickettsii and R. parkeri. All sera that reacted at least to one of Rickettsia species were tested against the six main Rickettsia species identified in Brazil: R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, R. bellii, R. rhipicephali, R. amblyommii and R. felis. Sixteen samples (4.4%) reacted to at least one Rickettsia species. Among positive animals, two dogs (15.5%) showed suggestive titers for R. bellii exposure. One sample had a homologous reaction to R. felis, a confirmed human pathogen. Although Rickettsia spp. circulation in dogs in the area studied may be considered at low prevalence, suggesting low risk of human infection, the present data demonstrate for the first time the exposure of dogs to R. bellii and R. felis in Southern Brazil.
