Sixty artists explore the nocturnal. Curated by Tom Hammick. The evening hour too gives us the irresponsibility which darkness and lamplight bestow. We are no longer quite ourselves. – Virginia Woolf, Street Haunting: A London Adventure, 1930 Towards Night is an exhibition exploring the nocturnal through paintings, prints and drawings by over sixty artists. Drawing on the nineteenth century European Romantic tradition, the show surveys contemporary and historical connections to wonderment and dystopia at dusk, twilight, night and dawn. Towards Night juxtaposes key paintings and prints by Constable, Friedrich, Munch, Nolde, Palmer and Turner, some of the best known visionaries of the Romantic tradition with contemporary artists who work with the transformative aspects of nightfall to convey emotional responses of awe, anxiety and solitude, love and loss, revelry, insomnia, and journey’s end. The exhibition opens with direct and positive responses to the natural world; Marc Chagall’s exotic dreamlike evening in The Poet Reclining (1915) sits close to eighteenth century Indian miniatures depicting brightly painted figures offset against darkening monsoon clouds, and William Crozier’s Balcony at Night, Antibes (2007), of a plant, blue and iridescent against the cool night sky. As the exhibition progresses, the dystopias become darker and more disturbing, and the connections between artists and works intensify: Emma Stibbon’s Rome Aqueduct (2011) takes on a heightened sense of pathos alongside Caspar David Friedrich’s Winter Landscape (1811); Peter Doig’s cinematic Echo Lake (1998) conjures up an increased sense of contemporary angst; and Prunella Clough’s False Flower (1993), a magical tree defying brutalism by growing out of concrete, becomes more miraculous near Night Shift (2015) Nick Carrick’s tomblike high rise. Tom Hammick’s Violetta Alone (2015) and Michael Craig Martin’s Ash Tray (2015), reinforce hedonistic aspects of night-time revelry alongside Four AM, Betsy Dadd’s young woman drinking in the early hours of the morning and L.S. Lowry’s drunken people in a pub in The Crowd (1922). In the final room, a cluster of works explores dreams and insomnia, from Louise Bourgeois’ Spirals (2010) to Munch’s lovers embracing in The Kiss (1902). Tom Hammick, curator of the show said “This exhibition has grown way beyond its original conception, to become a magnificent survey of painting and printmaking from over two hundred years based around the central tenet of night. Chitosan is chitin in deacetylated form and is the main constituent of crustacean exoskeletons. Commercially, chitosan is dried in tray driers, and during the operation, polymerization may occur as the chitosan is composed of carbohydrates. The aim of this work was to analyze chitosan in spouted bed and thin-layer drying, considering viscosity average molecular weight of the chitosan samples in the process. Results showed that spouted bed-dried chitosan presented a molecular weight value similar (160 kDa) to that of the raw one (150 kDa). However, when dried on tray dryers, the molecular weight was 300 kDa, indicating that molecule polymerization occurred.

The aim of the study was the optimisation of Spirulina platensis drying on convective hot air through the response surface methodology. The responses were thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and phycocyanin loss percentage values in final product. Experiments were carried out in perforated tray drier with parallel air flow, and the wet samples thickness and drying air temperatures were in range of 3–7 mm and 50–70 °C, respectively. The statistical analysis showed significant effect (P < 0.05) for air temperature and samples thickness. In the best drying condition, 55 °C and 3.7 mm, presented the phycocyanin loss percentage and the TBA values of approximately 37% and 1.5 mgMDA kg−1, respectively. In this drying condition, the fatty acids composition of the microalgae Spirulina did not show significance difference (P > 0.05) in relation to fresh biomass. The lipid profile of dried product presented high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (34.4%), especially the gamma-linolenic acid (20.6%).

The traditional process of filling the medicine trays and dispensing the medicines to the patients in the hospitals is manually done by reading the printed paper medicine chart. This process can be very strenuous and error-prone, given the number of sub-tasks involved in the entire workflow and the dynamic nature of the work environment. Therefore, efforts are being made to digitalise the medication dispensation process by introducing a mobile application called Smart Dosing application. The introduction of the Smart Dosing application into hospital workflow raises security concerns and calls for security requirement analysis. This thesis is written as a part of the smart medication management project at Embedded Systems Laboratory, A° bo Akademi University. The project aims at digitising the medicine dispensation process by integrating information from various health systems, and making them available through the Smart Dosing application. This application is intended to be used on a tablet computer which will be incorporated on the medicine tray. The smart medication management system include the medicine tray, the tablet device, and the medicine cups with the cup holders. Introducing the Smart Dosing application should not interfere with the existing process carried out by the nurses, and it should result in minimum modifications to the tray design and the workflow. The re-designing of the tray would include integrating the device running the application into the tray in a manner that the users find it convenient and make less errors while using it. The main objective of this thesis is to enhance the security of the hospital medicine dispensation process by ensuring the security of the Smart Dosing application at various levels. The methods used for writing this thesis was to analyse how the tray design, and the application user interface design can help prevent errors and what secure technology choices have to be made before starting the development of the next prototype of the Smart Dosing application. The thesis first understands the context of the use of the application, the end-users and their needs, and the errors made in everyday medication dispensation workflow by continuous discussions with the nursing researchers. The thesis then gains insight to the vulnerabilities, threats and risks of using mobile application in hospital medication dispensation process. The resulting list of security requirements was made by analysing the previously built prototype of the Smart Dosing application, continuous interactive discussions with the nursing researchers, and an exhaustive stateof- the-art study on security risks of using mobile applications in hospital context. The thesis also uses Octave Allegro method to make the readers understand the likelihood and impact of threats, and what steps should be taken to prevent or fix them. The security requirements obtained, as a result, are a starting point for the developers of the next iteration of the prototype for the Smart Dosing application.

A quitina é encontrada principalmente nos exoesqueletos de crustáceos, insetos e na parede celular de fungos. O biopolímero quitosana é obtido através da hidrólise alcalina da quitina. A despolimerização da quitosana é realizada para se obter um produto com valores baixos de massa molecular. O uso da quitosana em diversas áreas é diretamente relacionada com a massa molecular e o grau de desacetilação do polímero. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram o estudo da cinética de secagem de quitina em camada delgada utilizando um modelo difusivo, considerando a resistência externa à transferência de massa; a determinação do comportamento da massa molecular média viscosimétrica da quitosana, durante a secagem convectiva, em camada delgada; a otimização das etapas de desacetilação e despolimerização da quitosana. A quitina foi obtida de resíduos de camarão. Os experimentos da secagem de quitina e da quitosana foram em secador de bandejas, a 60°C, sendo que para a quitina foram utilizadas duas velocidades do ar de 0,5 e 1,5 m/s. A estimativa da viscosidade intrínseca foi através da equação de Huggins e a massa molecular da quitosana foi calculada pela equação de Mark-Houwink-Sakurada. As otimizações da reação de desacetilação e despolimerização foram realizadas utilizando a metodologia da superfície de resposta. Para a reação de desacetilação foram variados o tempo e a temperatura. Para a reação de despolimerização foram analisados a concentração de ácido clorídrico, a temperatura e o tempo de reação. O modelo difusivo com difusividade efetiva variável, utilizado para analisar a secagem de quitina, apresentou concordância com os dados experimentais, onde foi observado o efeito da resistência externa à transferência de massa, quando utilizada a menor velocidade do ar. A condição ótima da reação de desacetilação para massa molecular foi observada na temperatura de 130°C em 90 min, e correspondeu a massa molecular de 150 kDa e um grau de desacetilação de 90%. A operação de secagem da quitosana causou um aumento na massa molecular média viscosimétrica de 27% e este aumento foi linear com o tempo e a umidade do polímero, apresentando duas regiões. As condições da reação de despolimerização para alcançar 50 kDa foram à temperatura de reação de 65°C, concentração de ácido clorídrico de 35% v/v. Nestas condições a cinética de despolimerização foi de pseudo-primeira ordem, apresentando duas fases.

A Spirulina apresenta propriedades antioxidantes o que favorece seu uso como alimento funcional, fato que tem motivado a sua comercialização para a formulação de alimentos diversos e com finalidades terapêuticas. A secagem ganha importância durante produção de Spirulina, uma vez que a umidade necessária, para garantir que não ocorra degradação da biomassa desidratada durante o armazenamento, é alcançada através do conhecimento dos parâmetros que caracterizam a operação. Neste estudo foi utilizada a secagem com bomba de calor, um método alternativo, pois viabiliza a operação com temperaturas inferiores as tradicionalmente utilizadas, além de seu funcionamento ser independente das condições meteorológicas do ambiente. O trabalho experimental da secagem de Spirulina sp. foi iniciado com um estudo comparativo entre a secagem com bomba de calor (SBC) e a secagem tradicional (ST). O efeito dos diferentes métodos utilizados sob a amostra foi comparado em relação à cinética da operação e as características da microalga desidratada (cor, ficocianina, compostos fenólicos totais e atividade antioxidante total). As temperaturas do ar foram de 50 e 60ºC e a umidade absoluta da SBC foi dez vezes inferior a utilizada durante a ST. Os parâmetros que caracterizam a secagem foram influenciados pela temperatura do ar, bem como, pela baixa umidade absoluta na SBC. Os valores do tempo total da SBC foram 40% inferiores aos encontrados para a secagem ST, em ambas as temperaturas do ar. A maior preservação das características da Spirulina foi obtida na SBC e temperatura do ar de 50°C, e nesta condição os valores foram 14% (ficocianina), 60% (compostos fenólicos) e 10% (atividade antioxidante) superiores aos encontrados na mesma condição para a ST. Isto evidencia que o método de secagem é determinante na qualidade do produto desidratado. Posteriormente, foi realizado o estudo da cinética da SBC, bem como a otimização da operação de secagem e a reidratação das amostras desidratadas nas diferentes condições de secagem. O estudo foi realizado através de um planejamento fatorial 32, tendo como fatores de estudo a temperatura do ar (30, 40 e 50ºC) e a espessura da bandeja (1, 3 e 5 mm). As respostas utilizadas foram ficocianina, compostos fenólicos, atividade antioxidante total e cor da microalga desidratadas. Também foram realizadas a microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e as curvas termogravimétricas (DSC) das amostras desidratadas. A secagem apresentou um curto período de taxa constante, delimitado pela umidade crítica, sendo que, seus valores foram influenciados apenas pela temperatura do ar de secagem. O modelo Logarítmico forneceu elevados valores de R2ajust e os menores valores de soma dos erros quadráticos (SSE) e de critério informativo de Akaike (AIC). Os valores das energias de ativação para as espessuras de 1, 3 e 5 mm, foram na faixa de 20-23 kJ mol-1. A condição de operação mais adequada, para a secagem de Spirulina sp. com bomba de calor, foi obtida na temperatura do ar de 50°C e espessura da bandeja de 5 mm, com valores de ficocianina, compostos fenólicos, atividade antioxidante total e diferença de cor de 19,60 mg g-1, 1508 µgEAG g-1, 52,6% e 5,71, respectivamente. Os termogramas (DSC) evidenciaram que em 50 ºC e espessura de 5 mm, o produto apresentou maior estabilidade térmica. As amostras de Spirulina sp. desidratadas apresentaram estrutura morfológica (MEV), aparentemente, rígida e heterogênea, e os seus percentuais de reidratação corresponderam a 85-91% da umidade da microalga in natura.

La recomendación de esta valoración es de compra de la acción de Cartón de Colombia S.A., con un precio objetivo de $ 12,723, el cual fue calculado con la metodología de flujos de caja descontados y valoración por múltiplos para hallar el valor fundamental de las filiales -- La recomendación se basa en la buena dinámica que han tenido sus tres líneas de negocio: cartones y papeles, madera y plántulas de vivero y servicios, la cual se espera que continúe en los siguientes años creciendo de forma real -- Adicionalmente, se espera que en el 2016 empiece la construcción de una nueva planta de corrugados en Bogotá que funcionará con tecnología de punta y que servirá para poder satisfacer la demanda futura, ya que la empresa se encuentra operando con toda su capacidad instalada

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the hypothesis that the M. amazonicum prawns accept feeding in trays. Six ponds were stocked with 10 juveniles II (1.2 +/- 0.7 g) per m(2) in 02/14/2003. An entirely randomized experimental design with 2 treatments (feeding in trays or feeding to the throw) and 3 replicates was used. Prawn average weight, survival, productivity, and physical and chemical variables of the water were compared between treatments using "t" test of Student. Average weight, survival and productivity were, respectively, 7.2 +/- 0.3 g, 46.8 +/- 7.8% and 335 +/- 45 kg/ha in feeding tray treatment and 6.8 +/- 0.1 g, 85.8 +/- 5.2% and 586 +/- 42 kg/ha in feed to the throw treatment. Survival and productivity differed significantly (p<0.5), while that average weight didn't differ significantly. M. amazonicum needs to use further number of trays per area, possibly due to territorial and aggressive behavior.

In the last decades, intensive research has been carried out in order to replace oil-based polymers with bio-based polymers due to growing environmental concerns. So far, most of the barrier materials used in food packaging are petroleum-based materials. The purpose of the barrier is to protect the packaged food from oxygen, water vapour, water and fat. The mechanical and barrier properties of coatings based on starch-plasticizer and starch-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH)-plasticizer blends have been studied in the work described in this thesis. The plasticizers used were glycerol, polyethylene glycol and citric acid. In a second step, polyethylene coatings were extruded onto paperboard pre-coated with a starch-PVOH-plasticizer blend. The addition of PVOH to the starch increased the flexibility of the film. Curing of the film led to a decrease in flexibility and an increase in tensile strength. The flexibility of the starch-PVOH films was increased more when glycerol or polyethylene glycol was added than citric acid. The storage modulus of the starch-PVOH films containing citric acid increased substantially at high temperature. It was seen that the addition of polyethylene glycol or citric acid to the starch-PVOH blend resulted in an enrichment of PVOH at the surface of the films. Tensile tests on the films indicated that citric acid acted as a compatibilizer and increased the compatibility of the starch and PVOH in the blend. The addition of citric acid to the coating recipe substantially decreased the water vapour transmission rate through the starch-PVOH coated paperboard, which indicated that citric acid acts as a cross-linker for starch and/or PVOH. The starch-PVOH coatings containing citric acid showed oxygen-barrier properties similar to those of pure PVOH or of a starch-PVOH blend without plasticizer when four coating layers were applied on a paperboard. The oxygen-barrier properties of coatings based on a starch-PVOH blend containing citric acid indicated a cross-linking and increase in compatibility of the starch-PVOH blends. Polyethylene extrusion coating on a pre-coated paperboard resulted in a clear reduction in the oxygen transmission rate for all the pre-coating formulations containing plasticizers. The addition of a plasticizer to the pre-coating reduced the adhesion of polyethylene to pre-coated board. Polyethylene extrusion coating gave a board with a lower oxygen transmission rate when the paperboard was pre-coated with a polyethylene-glycol-containing formulation than with a citric-acid-containing formulation. The addition of polyethylene glycol to pre-coatings indicated an increase in wetting of the pre-coated paperboard by the polyethylene melt, and this may have sealed the small defects in the pre-coating leading to low oxygen transmission rate. The increase in brittleness of starch-PVOH films containing citric acid at a high temperature seemed to have a dominating effect on the barrier properties developed by the extrusion coating process.
