An explanation for the observed variations in the output behaviour of SOI transistors with different buried oxide thicknesses is presented. At low drain bias, the temperature effects are relatively insignificant while at high drain bias, the temperature effects dominate the nonlinear behaviour of the output characteristics.

An integrated multiwavelength grating cavity (MGC) laser fabricated by selective area regrowth is demonstrated. In addition to allowing wavelength conversion, the device can perform various important network functions such as space switching and multiplexing. The use of the device for these functions offers several advantages from a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network, such as flexibility, reduced component count, size, and the associated cost reduction.

During a study of the distribution of penaeid prawns in Sri Lanka waters a difference was noticed in the species composition from one estuary to another. Moreover, a marked monthly fluctuation in the relative abundance of the different penaied species was also observed. This indicated migratory behaviour. In order to study this phenomenon in the different species of prawns, regular samples of prawns were collected from two estuaries on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, namely at Moratuwa/Panadura and at Negombo. The investigation was spread over a period of three years from 1957-1959.

An attempt was made to study the input-output relationships and economics of pangas monoculture and carp-pangas polyculture in Bangladesh. By analyzing the data collected from 50 pangas farms and 55 carp-pangas farms, the study has investigated the production systems of two technologies and the effects of fingerling stocking and applications of feed and fertilizer on fisheries income. The data were collected from the fishermen of Trishal and Bhaluka of Mymensingh district, and Kahaloo and Adamdighee of Bogra district during 2001-02. For pangas monoculture, the stocking density was 31,561 per ha while it was 55,017 per ha in carp-pangas polyculture. Most of the farmers used urea, TSP and lime before stocking. Rice and wheat bran happened to be the most common feed ingredients for both types of culture in general. Other important ingredients used were mustard oil-cakes, rice polish, wheat flour, fish meal, bone meal, soybean meal and poultry litter. In terms of quantities, rice bran and wheat bran dominated the farmers list. Rice and wheat bran together constituted about 60% of all studied feeds. Feed cost constituted 59.13% of total costs for pangas monoculture and 67.44% for carp-pangas polyculture. Per ha productions of pangas and carp-pangas in a single culture cycle were 15,508 kg and 19,745 kg, respectively. Per ha gross profits were estimated to be Tk 310,311 and Tk 464,418 for pangas monoculture and carp-pangas polyculture, respectively. Net profit appeared to be Tk 264,216 per ha for pangas monoculture and Tk 416,509 per ha for carp-pangas polyculture. The BCRs calculated were 1.46 and 1.68 for monoculture and polyculture, respectively. The break-even costs per kg of fish were estimated at Tk 36.93 for pangas and Tk 30.93 for mixed species which was much lower than the prices the producers received. Break-even productions were estimated at 10,702 kg per ha for pangas monoculture and 11,784 kg per ha for carp-pangas polyculture. Fingerling and feed cost, and pond size significantly explained the variation of income from pangas monoculture. These factors have significantly influenced the income from the crop. Functional analysis shows that 1% increase in the feed cost might increase 0.51% of pangas income and 0.41% in carp-pangas income. No other inputs had shown this much of responses to increasing income from a fish.

Experiments were undertaken in order to measure the diel fluctuations in the catch of the post-larvae of P. japonicus in relation to the tidal cycles, light conditions and water temperature. The fluctuations are discussed comparing them with other post-larvae Penaeus species appearing along shore waters in the Philippines.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) of the excitatory synaptic inputs plasticity in the hippocampus is believed to underlie certain types of learning and memory. Especially, stressful experiences, well known to produce long-lasting strong memories of the event themselves, enable LTD by low frequency stimulation (LFS, 3 Hz) but block LTP induction by high frequency stimulation (HFS, 200 Hz). However, it is unknown whether stress-affected synaptic plasticity has an impact on the output plasticity. Thus, we have simultaneously studied the effects of stress on synaptic plasticity and neuronal output in the hippocampal CA1 region of anesthetized Wistar rats. Our results revealed that stress increased basal power spectrum of the evoked synchronized-spikes and enabled LTD induction by LFS. The induction of stress-facilitated LTD but not LFS induced persistent decreases of the power spectrum of the synchronized-spikes and the frequency of the spontaneous unitary discharges; However, HFS induced UP in non-stressed animals and increased the power spectrum of the synchronized-spikes, without affecting the frequency of the spontaneous unitary discharges, but HFS failed to induce UP in stressed animals without affecting the power spectrum of the synchronized-spikes and the frequency of the spontaneous unitary discharges. These observations that stress-facilitated LTD induces the output plasticity through the synchronized-spikes and spontaneous unitary discharges suggest that these types of stress-related plasticity may play significant roles in distribution, amplification and integration of encoded information to other brain structures under stressful conditions. Three novel designs of adaptively modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modems using subcarrier modulation (AMOOFDM-SCM) are proposed, for the first time, each of which requires a single IFFT/FFT operation. These designs has a number of salient advantages including a significantly simplified modem configuration due to the involvement of a single IFFT/FFT operation, input/output reconfigurability, dynamic bandwidth allocation capability, cost reduction and system flexibility and performance robustness to variations in transmission link conditions. Investigations show that these three modems are capable of supporting >60Gb/s AMOOFDM-SCM signal transmission over 20km, 40km and 60km single-mode fibre-based intensity modulation and direct detection transmission links without optical amplification and chromatic dispersion compensation. In this paper, we demonstrate synchronization of two electrically coupled MEMS oscillators incorporating nearly identical silicon tuning fork microresonators. It is seen that as the output of the oscillators are coupled, they exhibit a synchronized response wherein the output amplitudes and signal-to-noise ratios of the two oscillators are improved relative to the case where the two oscillators are uncoupled. The observed output frequency of each oscillator before coupling is 219402.4 Hz and 219403.6 Hz respectively. In contrast, when the oscillators are driven simultaneously, they lock at a common output frequency of 219401.3 Hz and their outputs are found to be out-of-phase with respect to each other. A 6 dBm gain in output power and a reduction in the phase fluctuations of the output signal are observed for the coupled oscillators compared to the case when the oscillators are uncoupled. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper advocates 'reduce, reuse, recycle' as a complete energy savings strategy. While reduction has been common to date, there is growing need to emphasize reuse and recycling as well. We design a DC-DC buck converter to demonstrate the 3 techniques: reduce with low-swing and zero voltage switching (ZVS), reuse with supply stacking, and recycle with regulated delivery of excess energy to the output load. The efficiency gained from these 3 techniques helps offset the loss of operating drivers at very high switching frequencies which are needed to move the output filter completely on-chip. A prototype was fabricated in 0.18μm CMOS, operates at 660MHz, and converts 2.2V to 0.75-1.0V at ∼50mA.1 © 2008 IEEE.

The design and manufacture of a prototype chip level power supply is described, with both simulated and experimental results. Of particular interest is the inclusion of a fully integrated on-chip LC filter. A high switching frequency of 660MHz and the design of a device drive circuit reduce losses by supply stacking, low-swing signaling and charge recycling. The paper demonstrates that a chip level converter operating at high frequency can be built and shows how this can be achieved, using zero voltage switching techniques similar to those commonly used in larger converters. Both simulations and experimental data from a fabricated circuit in 0.18μm CMOS are included. The circuit converts 2.2V to 0.75∼1.0V at ∼55mA. ©2008 IEEE.
