The genetic basis of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with its complex etiology is still largely elusive. Plasma levels of lipids and apolipoproteins are among the major quantitative risk factors for CVD and are well-established intermediate traits that may be more accessible to genetic dissection than clinical CVD end points. Chromosome 19 harbors multiple genes that have been suggested to play a role in lipid metabolism and previous studies indicated the presence of a quantitative trait locus (QTL) for cholesterol levels in genetic isolates. To establish the relevance of genetic variation at chromosome 19 for plasma levels of lipids and apolipoproteins in the general, out-bred Caucasian population, we performed a linkage study in four independent samples, including adolescent Dutch twins and adult Dutch, Swedish and Australian twins totaling 493 dizygotic twin pairs. The average spacing of short-tandem-repeat markers was 6 - 8 cM. In the three adult twin samples, we found consistent evidence for linkage of chromosome 19 with LDL cholesterol levels ( maximum LOD scores of 4.5, 1.7 and 2.1 in the Dutch, Swedish and Australian sample, respectively); no indication for linkage was observed in the adolescent Dutch twin sample. The QTL effects in the three adult samples were not significantly different and a simultaneous analysis of the samples increased the maximum LOD score to 5.7 at 60 cM pter. Bivariate analyses indicated that the putative LDL-C QTL also contributed to the variance in ApoB levels, consistent with the high genetic correlation between these phenotypes. Our study provides strong evidence for the presence of a QTL on chromosome 19 with a major effect on LDL-C plasma levels in outbred Caucasian populations.

Three pathological fractures occurred secondary to osteolytic lesions of multiple myeloma. Two long bone fractures were each stabilised using interlocking nail fixation augmented with polymethyl meth acral ate bone cement. One vertebral fracture was stabilised using Steinmann pins and PMMA. Successful stabilisation, rapid return to function and improvement in quality of life occurred in all fractures. The patient survived approximately eight months on concurrent chemotherapy.

This study aimed to develop a practical method of estimating energy expenditure (EE) during tennis. Twenty-four elite female tennis players first completed a tennis-specific graded test in which five different intensity levels were applied randomly. Each intensity level was intended to simulate a game of singles tennis and comprised six 14 s periods of activity alternated with 20 s of active rest. Oxygen consumption (VO2) and heart rate (HR) were measured continuously and each player's rate of perceived exertion (RPE) was recorded at the end of each intensity level. Rate of energy expenditure (EEVO2) during the test was calculated using the sum of VO2 during play and the 'O-2 debt' during recovery, divided by the duration of the activity. Using synchrotron X-ray grazing incidence diffraction, superlattice structures have been observed to develop in Langmuir-Blodgett films of cadmium arachidate as the temperature is raised. The previously reported superstructure in the stacked lamellae at room temperature changes at about 70 degreesC and there are further changes at about 90 and 103 degreesC before the major phase transition from stacked lamellae to hexagonally packed rods occurs at 107 degreesC (Langmuir 1997, 13, 1602). Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo geral compreender a proposta/ prática curricular do Atendimento Educacional Especializado (AEE) na Sala de Recursos Multifuncionais (SRM) enquanto função complementar na educação da criança pequena com deficiência e Transtornos Globais do Desenvolvimento (TGD). Partimos das constatações de que, nas duas últimas décadas, documentos oficiais, assim como pesquisas na área, apontam a necessidade de um trabalho pedagógico inclusivo, que atenda às demandas e características dos diferentes sujeitos matriculados. Questionamos se a proposta e prática curricular complementar do AEE, por meio da SRM, têm contribuído para a inclusão da criança pequena, público alvo da educação especial, nas práticas pedagógicas da sala de aula comum? Teoricamente buscamos as contribuições da Abordagem Histórico-Cultural para compreender o desenvolvimento e aprendizagem da criança com deficiência, assim como procuramos a interlocução com os teóricos do currículo, entre os quais Sacristán. Como metodologia, utilizamos a pesquisa-ação colaborativo-crítico. O lócus da pesquisa foi um Centro de Educação Infantil, situado em Vitória/ES, com uma sala de recurso multifuncional, modelo proposto pelo Ministério da Educação (MEC). Os sujeitos participantes foram crianças de 3 a 7 anos matriculadas no Centro Municipal de Educação Infantil (CMEI) e encaminhadas para o AEE, na SRM (seis crianças surdas, sete crianças com manifestações de TGD e uma criança com Síndrome de Down); dois professores de educação especial da SRM (uma professora da área da área de Deficiência Intelectual (DI), uma professora bilíngue e um instrutor surdo); professores regentes do turno da manhã CMEI e dois pedagogos. Como perspectiva teórico-metodológica, optamos pela rede significações (Rossetti-Ferreira, 2004) que tem seus pressupostos fundamentados na teoria histórico-cultural, que compreende os processos de desenvolvimento humano como atos de significação constituídos por múltiplas interações estabelecidas social e culturalmente pelos sujeitos durante toda a vida. A organização e análise dos dados ocorreram por meio dos movimentos, cenários e atores; as práticas curriculares inclusivas na/da escola: a SRM e a sala de aula comum em seus encontros e desencontros; a preocupação com o desenvolvimento psicomotor da criança; o brincar versus a aquisição da leitura e escrita; o diálogo entre o currículo da SRM e a sala de aula comum e os encontros colaborativos com os professores de educação especial, com as pedagogas e com as professoras regentes do CMEI. Algumas considerações importantes se destacam, entre as quais: a falta de formação e desconhecimento por parte dos professores de educação especial sobre a proposta curricular da educação infantil e práticas pedagógicas descontextualizadas e fragmentadas desenvolvidas na SRM, que dificultam a ação complementar ao trabalho da classe comum. Para as professoras das salas de atividades o AEE é viável na escola de educação infantil, mas não somente na SRM, concordam que deve haver o atendimento educacional especializado no turno em que a criança esteja matriculada; que ele pode ajudar na inclusão da criança público alvo da educação especial, por meio de práticas sociais e culturais lúdicas, linguísticas e intelectuais. Concluímos que as professoras desejam um AEE dinâmico, interlocutor, que se movimente na escola como um todo.

The radial undistortion model proposed by Fitzgibbon and the radial fundamental matrix were early steps to extend classical epipolar geometry to distorted cameras. Later minimal solvers have been proposed to find relative pose and radial distortion, given point correspondences between images. However, a big drawback of all these approaches is that they require the distortion center to be exactly known. In this paper we show how the distortion center can be absorbed into a new radial fundamental matrix. This new formulation is much more practical in reality as it allows also digital zoom, cropped images and camera-lens systems where the distortion center does not exactly coincide with the image center. In particular we start from the setting where only one of the two images contains radial distortion, analyze the structure of the particular radial fundamental matrix and show that the technique also generalizes to other linear multi-view relationships like trifocal tensor and homography. For the new radial fundamental matrix we propose different estimation algorithms from 9,10 and 11 points. We show how to extract the epipoles and prove the practical applicability on several epipolar geometry image pairs with strong distortion that - to the best of our knowledge - no other existing algorithm can handle properly.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of multiple centroids to study the adaptability of alfalfa genotypes (Medicago sativa L.). In this method, the genotypes are compared with ideotypes defined by the bissegmented regression model, according to the researcher's interest. Thus, genotype classification is carried out as determined by the objective of the researcher and the proposed recommendation strategy. Despite the great potential of the method, it needs to be evaluated under the biological context (with real data). In this context, we used data on the evaluation of dry matter production of 92 alfalfa cultivars, with 20 cuttings, from an experiment in randomized blocks with two repetitions carried out from November 2004 to June 2006. The multiple centroid method proved efficient for classifying alfalfa genotypes. Moreover, it showed no unambiguous indications and provided that ideotypes were defined according to the researcher's interest, facilitating data interpretation.

In sport there is a great need to obtain as much information as possible about the factors which affect the dynamics of play. This study uses sequential analysis and temporal patterns (T-patterns)to examine the evolution of defence (against an equal number of attackers)as used by the Spanish handball team at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The aim is to help handball coaches (during their training and gathering of professional experience)to understand the importance of the structure of defensive systems. This can be achieved through observational processes that reveal the evolution and adaptation of these defensive systems according to different variables: the match score, the response of the opposing team and progress through the tournament.

Moulds may produce a diversity of toxins such as aflatoxins, ochratoxins, trichothecenes, zearalenone, fumonisins and others. Although toxicological, environmental and epidemiological studies have addressed the problem of these toxins one by one, more than one mycotoxin are found usually in the same contaminated food. Risk assessment for humans potentially exposed to multimycotoxins suffers very much from the lack of adequate food consumption data. Furthermore, for a given mycotoxin, synergism and antagonism with other mycotoxins, found in the same food commodities, are not taken into account. Aflatoxin B1 and ochratoxin A belong to the most frequently occurring mycotoxins. This has repeatedly been demonstrated, however, normally, the risk resulting from their simultaneous occurrence is not considered. A descriptive study was developed to monitor air fungal contamination in one hospital food unit.

The aim of this longitudinal studywas to investigate the effect of a set of factors from multiple levels of influence: infant temperament, infant regulatory behavior, and maternal sensitivity on infant’s attachment. Our sample consisted of 48 infants born prematurely and their mothers. At 1 and 3 months of age, mothers described their infants’behavior using the Escala de Temperamento do Beb´e. At 3 months of age, infants’ capacity to regulate stress was evaluated during Tronick’s Face-to-Face Still-Face (FFSF) paradigm. At 9 months of age, mothers’ sensitivity was evaluated during free play using the CARE-Index. At 12 months of age, infants’ attachment security was assessed during Ainsworth’s Strange Situation. A total of 16 infants were classified as securely attached, 17 as insecure-avoidant, and 15 as insecure-resistant. Mothers of securely attached infantswere more likely than mothers of insecure infants to describe their infants as less difficult and to be more sensitive to their infants in free play. In turn, secure infants exhibited more positive responses during the Still-Face. Infants classified as insecureavoidant were more likely to self-comfort during the Still-Face and had mothers who were more controlling during free play. Insecure-resistant exhibited higher levels of negative arousal during the Still-Face and had mothers who were more unresponsive in free play. These findings show that attachment quality is influenced bymultiple factors, including infant temperament, coping behavior, and maternal sensitivity.

The aims of the study is to examine for intervention program of physical activity in the perception of fatigue, in patients with multiple sclerosis.
