The electronic structure of the lowest-lying electronic states of W(2) were investigated at the CASPT2 level. The ground state is a X(1)Sigma(+)(g) state, followed by the a(3)Delta(u), b(3)Sigma(+)(u) and A(1)Delta(u) electronic states. Seven low-lying Omega-states were computed: (1)0(g)(+), (2)3(u), (3)2(u), (4)1(u), (5)0(u)(-), (6)1(u), and (7)2(u), with the ground state corresponding to the (1)0(g)(+)(X(1)Sigma(+)(g)) state. Comparison with the other VIB transition metal group dimers indicates a common pattern of electronic structure and spectroscopic properties. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Accurate potential energy curves, dissociation energies and spectroscopic constants for several low-lying doublet and quartet electronic states of CaAl were investigated using the CASSCF/MRCI methodology, and the cc-pVQZ basis set. Our results represent an improvement over a previous theoretical description, and also characterizes new higher excited states not previously investigated, thus confirming the assignment of four excited states investigated experimentally. With the theoretical transition moment functions, transition probabilities and radiative lifetimes were estimated via Einstein spontaneous emission coefficients. (c) 2008 Elsevier B. V. Multiconfigurational SCF and second-order perturbation theory have been employed to study seven low-lying singlet and triplet electronic states of the Mo-2 molecule. The bond order of the ground state has been analyzed based on the effective bond order (EBO), indicating that a fully developed sextuple bond is formed between the two Mo atoms. The experimentally observed excited states a(3)Sigma(+)(u) and A(1)Sigma(+)(u) have been determined and the so-called (3)Lambda excited state identified as the b(3)Sigma(+)(u) state, in agreement with experimental expectations. Results from infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy and kinetics of singly hydrated, protonated proline indicate that the water molecule hydrogen bonds preferentially to the formally neutral carboxylic acid at low temperatures and at higher temperatures to the protonated N-terminus, which bears the formal charge. Hydration isomer populations obtained from IRPD kinetic data as a function of temperature are used to generate a van`t Hoff plot that reveals that C-terminal binding is enthalpically favored by 4.2-6.4 kJ/mol, whereas N-terminal binding is entropically favored by 31-43 J/(mol K), consistent with a higher calculated barrier for water molecule rotation at the C-terminus.

Accurate potential energy curves, dipole moment functions, dissociation energies, and molecular constants for several low-lying singlet and triplet electronic states of BeS were investigated using the CASSCF/MRCI methodology, and the cc-pV5Z basis set for beryllium, and the aug-cc-pV(5+d) Z set for sulfur. Besides presenting improved results for the three lowest lying states, this study presents the first theoretical characterization of another set of nine excited states so far unknown experimentally. Our results are sufficiently accurate to reliably guide the experimental search and characterization of these states, and also to confirm the experimental assignment of the B(1)Sigma(+) excited state. A relativistic four-component study was performed for the XeF(2) molecule by using the Dirac-Coulomb (DC) Hamiltonian and the relativistic adapted Gaussian basis sets (RAGBSs). The comparison of bond lengths obtained showed that relativistic effects on this property are small (increase of only 0.01 angstrom) while the contribution of electron correlation, obtained at CCSD(T) or CCSD-T levels, is more important (increase of 0.05 angstrom). Electron correlation is also dominant over relativistic effects for dissociation energies. Moreover, the correlation-relativity interaction is shown to be negligible for these properties. The electron affinity, the first ionization potential and the double ionization potential are obtained by means of the Fock-space coupled cluster (FSCC) method, resulting in DC-CCSD-T values of 0.3 eV, 12.5 eV and 32.3 eV, respectively. Vibrational frequencies and some anharmonicity constants were also calculated under the four-component formalism by means of standard perturbation equations. All these molecular properties are, in general, ill satisfactory agreement with available experimental results. Finally, a partition in terms of charge-charge flux-dipole flux (CCFDF) contributions derived by means of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) in non-relativistic QCISD(FC)/3-21G* calculations was carried out for XeF(2) and KrF(2). This analysis showed that the most remarkable difference between both molecules lies on the charge flux contribution to the asymmetric stretching mode, which is negligible in KrF(2) but important in XeF(2). The 4.5S RNA molecule of Escherichia coli is essential to cell viability. It has been shown that depletion of this molecule inhibits protein synthesis, induces the heat shock response, and generally slows cell growth. The molecule has also been implicated in protein secretion, as in cells depleted of 4.5S RNA, an unsecreted precursor to ?-lactamase accumulates (pre-?-lactamase). A role in protein secretion is further supported by structural similarities with the 7S RNA molecule of eukaryotic SRP, specific binding to SRP54, and its homolog in E. coli, P48, and the ability of 7S RNA from certain archaebacteria to suppress 4.5S RNA depletion. In this study I have utilized strains with mutant forms of the 4.5S RNA genes in order to study the effect of altered 4.5S RNA on cell physiology. These strains have their mutant 4.55 RNA under the control of the tryptophan synthetic operon. Decreased growth rates, inhibited cell division, and altered protein synthesis all result from these mutations.

Surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) is used for single-molecule detection from spatially resolved 1-mum(2) sections of a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer deposited onto a Ag film. The target molecule, his (benzimidazo) thioperylene (BZP), is dispersed in an arachidic acid monomolecular layer containing one BZP molecule per mum(2) which is also the probing area of the Raman microscope. For concentrated samples (attomole quantities in the field of view), average SERRS, surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF), and Raman imaging, including line mapping and global images at different temperatures, were recorded. Single-molecule SERRS spectra, obtained using an LB monolayer, present changes in bandwidth and relative intensities, highlighting the properties of single-molecule SERRS that are lost in average SERRS measurements of mixed LB monolayers obtained at the same temperatures. Also, the dilute system phenomenon of blinking is discussed with regard to results obtained from LB monolayers. The dilution process used in the single-molecule LB SERRS work is independently supported by fluorescence results obtained from very dilute solutions with monomer concentrations down to 10(-12) M.

Calculation for the electronic excitation of the ground state of H-2 to B (1) Sigma(u)(+) and b(3) Sigma(u)(+) states by positronium- (Ps) atom impact has been carried out using the first Born approximation considering discrete Ps excitations up to n = 6 and Ps ionization in the final state. To include the effect of electron exchange, we propose an alternative approximation scheme in the light of the Rudge approach, which takes into account the composite nature of the Ps-atom projectile.
