In this study, the mechanical properties of a closed-cell aluminium foam have been investigated by compressive tests. The deformation behaviors of the aluminium foams were studied using X-ray microtomography (XMT). Aluminium foam samples with various cell size distributions and cell
morphologies were intentionally selected to investigate the effect of the cell characteristics on the deformation behaviors. Results indicated that the deformation of the aluminium foams under compressive loading was localized in narrow continuous deformation bands having widths of order of a cell diameter. The cells in the deformation bands collapsed by a mixed deformation mechanism, which includes mainly bending, and also minor buckling and yielding as well. Different fractions of the three deformation modes led to variations in the peak stress and energy absorption for different foam samples with the same density. It was also found that the cell morphology affected the deformation mechanism significantly, whilst the cell size showed little influence. Those cells with defects such as corrugations, curvatures and non-uniformities in the wall thickness were the initiators of the deformation bands of the aluminium foam.

Low dietary intakes of the n-3 long-chain PUFA (LCPUFA) EPA and DHA are thought to be associated with increased risk for a variety of adverse  outcomes, including some psychiatric disorders. Evidence from  observational and intervention studies for a role of n-3 LCPUFA in depression is mixed, with some support for a benefit of EPA and/or DHA in major depressive illness. The present study was a double-blind randomised controlled trial that evaluated the effects of EPA+DHA supplementation (1.5 g/d) on mood and cognitive function in mild to moderately depressed  individuals. Of 218 participants who entered the trial, 190 completed the planned 12 weeks intervention. Compliance, confirmed by plasma fatty acid concentrations, was good, but there was no evidence of a difference between supplemented and placebo groups in the primary outcome - namely, the depression subscale of the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales at 12 weeks. Mean depression score was 8.4 for the EPA+DHA group and 9.6 for the placebo group, with an adjusted difference of - 1.0 (95 % CI - 2.8, 0.8; P = 0.27). Other measures of mood, mental health and cognitive function, including Beck Depression Inventory score and attentional bias toward threat words, were similarly little affected by the intervention. In conclusion, substantially increasing EPA+DHA intake for 3 months was found not to have beneficial or harmful effects on mood in mild to moderate depression. Adding the present result to a meta-analysis of previous relevant randomised controlled trial results confirmed an overall negligible benefit of n-3 LCPUFA supplementation for depressed mood.

In the present study, pure titanium (Ti) plates were firstly treated to form various types of oxide layers on the surface and then were immersed into simulated body fluid (SBF) to evaluate the apatite-forming ability. The surface morphology and roughness of the different oxide layers were measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the surface energies were determined based on the Owens–Wendt (OW) methods. It was found that Ti samples after alkali heat (AH) treatment achieved the best apatite formation after soaking in SBF for three weeks, compared with those without treatment, thermal or H2O2 oxidation. Furthermore, contact angle measurement revealed that the oxide layer on the alkali heat treated Ti samples possessed the highest surface energy. The results indicate that the apatite-inducing ability of a titanium oxide layer links to its surface energy. Apatite nucleation is easier on a surface with a higher surface energy.

Some of the critical properties for a successful orthopedic or dental implant material are its biocompatibility and bioactivity. Pure titanium (Ti) and zirconium (Zr) are widely accepted as biocompatible metals, due to their non-toxicity. While the bioactivity of Ti and some Ti alloys has been extensively investigated, there is still insufficient data for Zr and titanium-zirconium (TiZr) alloys. In the present study, the bioactivity, that is, the apatite forming ability on the alkali and heat treated surfaces of Ti, Zr, and TiZr alloy in simulated body fluid (SBF), was studied. In particular, the effect of the surface roughness characteristics on the bioactivity was evaluated for the first time. The results indicate that the pretreated Ti, Zr and TiZr alloy could form apatite coating on their surfaces. It should be noted that the surface roughness also critically affected the bioactivity of these pretreated metallic samples. A surface morphology with an average roughness of approximately 0.6 microm led to the fastest apatite formation on the metal surfaces. This apatite layer on the metal surface is expected to bond to the surrounding bones directly after implantation.

There is a plethora of studies that investigate evidence for the behaviour of stock prices using univariate techniques for unit roots. Whether or not stock prices are characterised by a unit root have implications for the efficient market hypothesis, which asserts that returns of a stock market are unpredictable from previous price changes. The extant literature has found mixed evidence on the integrational properties of stock prices. In this paper, for the first time, we provide evidence on the unit root hypothesis for G7 stock price indices using the Lagrangian multiplier panel unit root test that allows for structural breaks. Our main finding is that stock prices are stationary processes, inconsistent with the efficient market hypothesis.

Objectives
The purpose of this study was to investigate the bond strength of apatite layer on titanium (Ti) substrate coated by biomimetic method and to improve the bonding of apatite layer to Ti substrate by optimizing the alkali heat-treatment process.

Methods
Ti plates pre-treated with an alkali solution of 10 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were heat-treated at 600 °C for 1 h at different atmospheres: in air and in vacuum. A dense apatite layer formed on top of the sodium titanate layer after soaking the alkali and heat-treated Ti samples in simulated body fluid (SBF) for up to 3 weeks. The bond strengths of the sodium titanate layer on Ti substrate, and apatite layer on the sodium titanate layer, were measured, respectively, by applying a tensile load. The fracture sites were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Results
The apatite layer on the substrate after alkali heat-treatment in air achieved higher bond strength than that on the substrate after alkali heat-treatment in vacuum. It was found that the interfacial structure between the sodium titanate and Ti substrate has a significant influence on the bond strength of the apatite layer.

Significance
It is advised that titanium implants can achieve better osseointegration under load-bearing conditions by depositing an apatite layer in vivo on a Ti surface subjected to alkali and heat-treated in air.

There is interest in the degree to which fats in dairy foods contribute to CHD. We undertook a systematic review to investigate the effect of dairy  consumption on CHD using prospective cohort studies. A systematic search of electronic databases identified studies relating dairy food intake in adulthood to episodes or death from CHD, IHD and myocardial infarction. Included studies were assessed for quality based on study methodology, validity of dietary assessment, success of follow-up, standardised  assessment of CHD, IHD or myocardial infarction end points and  appropriateness of statistical adjustment. Data from twelve cohorts involving >280 000 subjects were included. Most studies had follow-up of >80 %, adjusted statistically for three or more confounders and used standard criteria to determine end points. About half the studies used a validated FFQ, administered the FFQ more than once or had follow-up of >20 years. Fewer than half the studies involved subjects representative of the general population. Four of the twelve cohorts found no association between dairy intake and CHD. Eight studies reported varying relationships between different dairy foods and CHD or differential associations based on race, sex or over time. Although dairy foods contribute to the SFA composition of the diet, this systematic review could find no consistent evidence that dairy food consumption is associated with a higher risk of CHD. This could be due to the limited sensitivity of the dietary assessment methods to detect an effect of a single food in a mixed diet on complex clinical outcomes.

Background: Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a link between dietary fibre deficiency and prevalence of many “Western diseases” particularly colon related diseases. Many of the health benefits associated with dietary fibre are attributed to their prebiotic effect. However, not all fibres have the same prebiotic potential or the same impact on colon health.

Objective: To examine the in vitro fermentation properties of individual and mixed dietary fibres by measuring fermentation byproducts over time.

Design: Wheat bran and guar gum were selected for this study. Individual and mixed dietary fibres were added to batch fermentation system and were inoculated with fresh faecal inoculum (n= 4). Positive (inulin) and negative (no substrate) fermenters were also used to determine the differences. The pH of the five fermenters was adjusted to a baseline of 5.5 and 6.8 representing the pH of the proximal and distal sections of the colon respectively. Samples were drawn out of the fermenters at 0, 3, 9 and 24 hours for the analysis of pH, ammonia and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs).

Outcomes
: There were no significant differences in the pH levels at various time points between fermenters adjusted to pH 5.5 at baseline. However, in fermenters adjusted to pH 6.8 the pH of the fermenter containing wheat bran increased over the time (24h (P = 0.017)) due to production of a high amount of ammonia. The total SCFAs production was greater in fermenters containing combined fibres.

Conclusion
: There is a large inter-individual variation in the prebiotic effect of all types of dietary fibres, however, in the present study, dietary fibre combinations showed greater prebiotic potential compared with the individual fibres.

Background: Low glycemic index (GI) carbohydrates have been linked to increased satiety. The drive to eat may be mediated by postprandial changes in glucose, insulin and gut peptides.
Objective
: To investigate the effect of a low and a high GI diet on day-long (10 h) blood concentrations of glucose, insulin, cholecystokinin (CCK) and ghrelin (GHR).
Design: Subjects (n¼12) consumed a high and a low GI diet in a randomized, crossover design, consisting of four meals that were matched for macronutrients and fibre, and differed only in carbohydrate quality (GI). Blood was sampled every 30–60 min and assayed for glucose, insulin, CCK and GHR.
Results: The high GI diet resulted in significantly higher glucose and insulin mean incremental areas under the curve (IAUC, P¼0.027 and P¼0.001 respectively). CCK concentration was 59% higher during the first 7 h of the low GI diet (394±95 pmol/l min) vs the high GI diet (163±38 pmol/l min, P¼0.046), but there was no difference over 10 h (P¼0.224). GHR concentration was inversely correlated with insulin concentration (Pearson correlation 0.48, P¼0.007), but did not differ significantly between the low and high GI diets.
Conclusions: Mixed meals of lower GI are associated with lower day-long concentrations of glucose and insulin, and higher CCK after breakfast, morning tea and lunch. This metabolic profile could mediate differences in satiety and hunger seen in some, but not all, studies.

Porous titanium with a porosity of 75% was fabricated by space-holder sintering through powder metallurgy. The effect of the alkali and heat treatment on the strength of the porous titanium was investigated. Results indicated that the alkali and heat treatment led to a significant decrease in the strength of the porous titanium, whichwas causedby the degradation due to corrosion of the struts of the porous titanium with a layer of the reaction products, grain pullout and micro-cracks.

We have prepared polymer gel electrolytes with alkali metal ionic liquids (AMILs) that inherently contain alkali metal ions. The AMIL consisted of sulfate anion, imidazolium cation, and alkali metal cation. AMILs were mixed directly with poly(3-sulfopropyl acrylate) lithium salt or poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) lithium salt to form polymer gels. The ionic conductivity of these gels decreased with increasing polymer fraction, as in general ionic liquid/polymer mixed systems. At low polymer concentrations, these gels displayed excellent ionic conductivity of 10−4 to 10−3 S cm−1 at room temperature. Gelation was found to cause little change in the 7Li diffusion coefficient of the ionic liquid, as measured by pulse-field-gradient NMR. These data strongly suggest that the lithium cation migrates in successive pathways provided by the ionic liquids.

An experiment was conducted to measure the effect of diet on circulating concentrations of metabolic hormones and metabolites in cows undergoing extended lactations. Two groups of 6 Holstein-Friesian cows managed for lactations of 670 d were used in the experiment. One group was fully fed on a total mixed ration (TMR), whereas the other group grazed fresh pasture supplemented with grain (P+G). On 7 occasions between 332 and 612 d in milk, concentrations of metabolic hormones and glucose were measured in the blood plasma of each cow. Cows fed TMR gained more weight and body condition than P+G cows, but did not produce more milk during the study period. Only 3 of the TMR cows continued to lactate until 612 d in milk compared with all 6 of the P+G cows. Blood plasma from cows fed TMR had higher concentrations of glucose, insulin, glucagon, insulin-like growth factor 1, and leptin, but lower concentrations of growth hormone, than that from P+G cows. These changes were consistent with the preferential deposition of energy into adipose tissue at the expense of milk production and presumably were induced by a diet that provided precursors for gluconeogenesis that were in excess of the requirements for maintenance and prevailing milk production. The mechanism responsible for some TMR cows putting on excess weight and reducing or ceasing milk production is uncertain, but this observation has important implications for the nutritional management of cows in extended lactation programs.

This work investigates the effect of nanosized Al2O3 addition on the sinterability of YSZ electrolyte. (1-x)YSZ + Al2O3 ceramics with compositions x = 0 to 0.01 were prepared by the conventional mixed oxide route from a commercial powder suspension (particle size <50 nm), and sintered at 1200 to 1500 degrees C for 2 hours in air. Densification, phase evolution, and microstructure were characterized by SEM/EDS and XRD. An improvement in sintered density was observed for the samples with 0.2 to 0.5 mol% Al2O3, though depending on the sintering temperature. Only cubic zirconia was detected as crystalline phase, although XRD features suggested chemical interactions depending upon the amount of Al2O3. The grain size of YSZ was homogeneous and no second phase segregation was detected in the tested range of incorporated nano-Al2O3 and sintering temperatures.

In this work, we investigated the oxygen permeation properties of barium bismuth iron oxide within the family of [Ba2−3xBi3x−1][Fe2xBi1−2x]O2+3x/2 for x = 0.17–0.60. The structure changed progressively from cubic to tetragonal and then to hexagonal as function of x in accordance with the different relative amounts of bismuth on A-site and B-site of ABO3−δ perovskite lattices. We found that the oxygen flux and electrical conductivity correlated strongly, and it was prevalent for the cubic structure (x = 0.33–0.40) which conferred the highest oxygen flux of 0.59 ml min−1 cm−2 at 950 °C for a disk membrane x = 0.33 with a thickness of 1.2 mm. By reducing the thickness of the disk membrane to 0.8 mm, the oxygen flux increased to 0.77 ml min−1 cm−2, suggesting both surface kinetics and ion diffusion controlled oxygen flux, though the former was more prominent at higher temperatures. For disk membranes x = 0.45–0.60, the perovskite structure changed to tetragonal and hexagonal, and the oxygen flux was insignificant below 900 °C, clearly indicating electron conduction properties only. However, for two compositions with relatively high bismuth content, e.g. x = 0.55 and 0.60, there was a sudden and significant rise of oxygen permeability above 900 °C, by more than one order of magnitude. These materials changed conduction behavior from metallic to semiconductor at around 900 °C. These results suggest the advent of mixed ionic electronic conducting properties caused by the structure transition as bismuth ions changed their valence states to compensate for the oxygen vacancies formed within the perovskite lattices.

The main purpose of this paper is to extend the empirical research on the behavior of credit spreads on the USD denominated Malaysian bonds. We find that international political events have more influence on the changes of bond yield spreads from Malaysian USD issues than domestic events. Significant results are consistent across different issues. However, the resignation by the former Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, created a mixed response from the market. Using an error correction model, this study also found that the monetary policy by the US Federal Reserve has a long-term and significant impact on the behavior of the Malaysian USD issues. This study also provides further evidence that the current theoretical framework is sufficient to explain changes in the credit spread of bonds issued by the emerging market.
