This study was designed to assess sex-related differences in the selection of an appropriate strategy when facing novelty. A simple visuo-spatial task was used to investigate exploratory behavior as a specific response to novelty. The exploration task was followed by a visual discrimination task, and the responses were analyzed using signal detection theory. During exploration women selected a local searching strategy in which the metric distance between what is already known and what is unknown was reduced, whereas men adopted a global strategy based on an approximately uniform distribution of choices. Women's exploratory behavior gives rise to a notion of a secure base warranting a sense of safety while men's behavior does not appear to be influenced by risk. This sex-related difference was interpreted as a difference in beliefs concerning the likelihood of uncertain events influencing risk evaluation. Toro Toro (T) and Yungas (Y) have been described as genetically well differentiated populations of the Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) complex in Bolivia. Here we use geometric morphometrics to compare samples from these populations and new populations (Bolivia and Nicaragua), representing distant geographical origins, qualitative morphological variation ("one-spot" or "two-spots" phenotypes), ecologically distinct traits (peridomestic and silvatic populations), and possibly different epidemiological roles (transmitting or nor transmitting Leishmania chagasi). The Nicaragua (N) (Somotillo) sample was "one-spot" phenotype and a possible peridomestic vector. The Bolivian sample of the Y was also "one-spot" phenotype and a demonstrated peridomestic vector of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The three remaining samples were silvatic, "two-spots" phenotypes. Two of them (Uyuni and T) were collected in the highlands of Bolivian where VL never has been reported. The last one (Robore, R) came from the lowlands of Bolivia, where human cases of VL are sporadically reported. The decomposition of metric variation into size and shape by geometric morphometric techniques suggests the existence of two groups (N/Y/R, and U/T). Several arguments indicate that such subdivision of Lu. longipalpis could correspond to different evolutionary units.

The subfamily Triatominae is actually represented by 137 species distributed among 6 tribes and 19 genera. Within this subfamily, the genus Panstrongylus, Berg 1879, is composed by 13 species widespread in sylvatic, peridomestic, and domestic habitats of Neotropical regions. These species are vectors of Chagas disease and consequently are found associated with its main hosts, such as birds and mammals. Interest in species of this genus has been increasing in the last few years. Reports of several authors indicate these Triatominae to invade and colonize houses, increasing their epidemiological significance. Morphometry was used in this study to investigate correlations among possible closely related species. We measured 224 specimens among 13 species through a set of metric variables of the head. The results indicated that the genus Panstrongylus seems to be homogeneous since 10 of the 14 species were shown to be closely related.

En aquest document s'introdueixen els conceptes bàsics necessaris per a l'execució de mètriques de productivitat de programari. Després de la introducció, s'estudien amb detall les mètriques de productivitat més emprades actualment, que són línies de codi (mètrica orientada a les dimensions del projecte), punts de funció (orientada a la funcionalitat del projecte, específica per a projectes de gestió), punts de característica (semblant a punts de funció, però més genèrica i útil per a altres tipus de projectes) i punts de casos d'ús (també orientada a la funció i específica per a projectes d'orientació a objectes). S'hi explica com es pot aconseguir, a partir d'aquestes mètriques i amb l'ajut de models d'estimació de productivitat, com ara el model COCOMO II, les estimacions de l'esforç necessari per a desenvolupar un projecte de programari i la distribució de l'esforç en totes les etapes del projecte a partir de les estimacions de la fase de desenvolupament. També es tracta, encara que no amb tanta profunditat, de la mètrica

ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the, nature of space-time as described by the theory of general relativity. It mainly argues that space-time can be naturally interpreted as a physical structure in the precise sense of a network of concrete space-time relations among concrete space-time points that do not possess any intrinsic properties and any intrinsic identity. Such an interpretation is fundamentally based on two related key features of general relativity, namely substantive general covariance and background independence, where substantive general covariance is understood as a gauge-theoretic invariance under active diffeomorphisms and background independence is understood in the sense that the metric (or gravitational) field is dynamical and that, strictly speaking, it cannot be uniquely split into a purely gravitational part and a fixed purely inertial part or background. More broadly, a precise notion of (physical) structure is developed within the framework of a moderate version of structural realism understood as a metaphysical claim about what there is in the world. So, the developement of this moderate structural realism pursues two main aims. The first is purely metaphysical, the aim being to develop a coherent metaphysics of structures and of objects (particular attention is paid to the questions of identity and individuality of these latter within this structural realist framework). The second is to argue that moderate structural realism provides a convincing interpretation of the world as described by fundamental physics and in particular of space-time as described by general relativity. This structuralist interpretation of space-time is discussed within the traditional substantivalist-relationalist debate, which is best understood within the broader framework of the question about the relationship between space-time on the one hand and matter on the other. In particular, it is claimed that space-time structuralism does not constitute a 'tertium quid' in the traditional debate. Some new light on the question of the nature of space-time may be shed from the fundamental foundational issue of space-time singularities. Their possible 'non-local' (or global) feature is discussed in some detail and it is argued that a broad structuralist conception of space-time may provide a physically meaningful understanding of space-time singularities, which is not plagued by the conceptual difficulties of the usual atomsitic framework. Indeed, part of these difficulties may come from the standard differential geometric description of space-time, which encodes to some extent this atomistic framework; it raises the question of the importance of the mathematical formalism for the interpretation of space-time.

The trabecular bone score (TBS) is a gray-level textural metric that can be extracted from the two-dimensional lumbar spine dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) image. TBS is related to bone microarchitecture and provides skeletal information that is not captured from the standard bone mineral density (BMD) measurement. Based on experimental variograms of the projected DXA image, TBS has the potential to discern differences between DXA scans that show similar BMD measurements. An elevated TBS value correlates with better skeletal microstructure; a low TBS value correlates with weaker skeletal microstructure. Lumbar spine TBS has been evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. The following conclusions are based upon publications reviewed in this article: 1) TBS gives lower values in postmenopausal women and in men with previous fragility fractures than their nonfractured counterparts; 2) TBS is complementary to data available by lumbar spine DXA measurements; 3) TBS results are lower in women who have sustained a fragility fracture but in whom DXA does not indicate osteoporosis or even osteopenia; 4) TBS predicts fracture risk as well as lumbar spine BMD measurements in postmenopausal women; 5) efficacious therapies for osteoporosis differ in the extent to which they influence the TBS; 6) TBS is associated with fracture risk in individuals with conditions related to reduced bone mass or bone quality. Based on these data, lumbar spine TBS holds promise as an emerging technology that could well become a valuable clinical tool in the diagnosis of osteoporosis and in fracture risk assessment. © 2014 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

This presentation aims to make understandable the use and application context of two Webometrics techniques, the logs analysis and Google Analytics, which currently coexist in the Virtual Library of the UOC. In this sense, first of all it is provided a comprehensive introduction to webometrics and then it is analysed the case of the UOC's Virtual Library focusing on the assimilation of these techniques and the considerations underlying their use, and covering in a holistic way the process of gathering, processing and data exploitation. Finally there are also provided guidelines for the interpretation of the metric variables obtained.

Self-organizing maps (Kohonen 1997) is a type of artificial neural network developedto explore patterns in high-dimensional multivariate data. The conventional versionof the algorithm involves the use of Euclidean metric in the process of adaptation ofthe model vectors, thus rendering in theory a whole methodology incompatible withnon-Euclidean geometries.In this contribution we explore the two main aspects of the problem:1. Whether the conventional approach using Euclidean metric can shed valid resultswith compositional data.2. If a modification of the conventional approach replacing vectorial sum and scalarmultiplication by the canonical operators in the simplex (i.e. perturbation andpowering) can converge to an adequate solution.Preliminary tests showed that both methodologies can be used on compositional data.However, the modified version of the algorithm performs poorer than the conventionalversion, in particular, when the data is pathological. Moreover, the conventional ap-proach converges faster to a solution, when data is \well-behaved".Key words: Self Organizing Map; Artificial Neural networks; Compositional data

The sample space is in this case the interval (α,+∞), α & 0, which can be structured as a real Euclidean space in different ways. In this paper we present a novel structure from motion (SfM) approach able to infer 3D deformable models from uncalibrated stereo images. Using a stereo setup dramatically improves the 3D model estimation when the observed 3D shape is mostly deforming without undergoing strong rigid motion. Our approach first calibrates the stereo system automatically and then computes a single metric rigid structure for each frame. Afterwards, these 3D shapes are aligned to a reference view using a RANSAC method in order to compute the mean shape of the object and to select the subset of points on the object which have remained rigid throughout the sequence without deforming. The selected rigid points are then used to compute frame-wise shape registration and to extract the motion parameters robustly from frame to frame. Finally, all this information is used in a global optimization stage with bundle adjustment which allows to refine the frame-wise initial solution and also to recover the non-rigid 3D model. We show results on synthetic and real data that prove the performance of the proposed method even when there is no rigid motion in the original sequence

Purpose:To functionally and morphologically characterize the retina and optic nerve after transplantation of Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and Glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) secreting mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into glaucomatous rat eyes. Methods:Chronic ocular hypertension (COH) was induced in Brown Norway rats. Lentiviral constructs were used to transduce rat MSCs to produce BDNF, GDNF, or green fluorescent protein (GFP). The fellow eyes served as internal controls. Two days following COH induction, eyes received intravitreal injections of transduced MSCs. Electroretinography was performed to assess retinal function. Tonometry was performed throughout the experiment to monitor IOP. 42 days after MSC transplantation, rats were euthanized and the eyes and optic nerves were prepared for analysis. Results:Increased expression and secretion of BDNF and GDNF from lentiviral-transduced MSCs was verified using ELISA, and a bioactivity assay. Ratio metric analysis (COH eye/ Internal control eye response) of the Max combined response A-Wave showed animals with BDNF-MSCs (23.35 ± 5.15%, p=0.021) and GDNF-MSCs (28.73 ± 3.61%, p=0.025) preserved significantly more visual function than GFP-MSC treated eyes MSCs (18.05 ± 5.51%). Animals receiving BDNF-MSCs also had significantly better B-wave (33.80 ± 7.19%) and flicker ERG responses (28.52 ± 10.43%) than GFP-MSC treated animals (14.06 ± 12.67%; 3.52 ± 0.07%, respectively). Animals receiving GDNF-MSC transplants tended to have better function than animals with GFP-MSC transplants, but were not statistically significant (p=0.057 and p=0.0639). Conclusions:Mesenchymal stem cells are an excellent source of cells for autologous transplantation for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. We have demonstrated that lentiviral- transduced MSCs can survive following transplantation and preserve visual function in glaucomatous eyes. These results suggest that MSCs may be an ideal cellular vehicle for delivery of specific neurotrophic factors to the retina.

Image registration is an important component of image analysis used to align two or more images. In this paper, we present a new framework for image registration based on compression. The basic idea underlying our approach is the conjecture that two images are correctly registered when we can maximally compress one image given the information in the other. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we show that the image registration process can be dealt with from the perspective of a compression problem. Second, we demonstrate that the similarity metric, introduced by Li et al., performs well in image registration. Two different versions of the similarity metric have been used: the Kolmogorov version, computed using standard real-world compressors, and the Shannon version, calculated from an estimation of the entropy rate of the images

Although native to the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia, Aedes albopictus is now found on five continents, primarily due to its great capacity to adapt to different environments. This species is considered a secondary vector of dengue virus in several countries. Wing geometric morphometrics is widely used to furnish morphological markers for the characterisation and identification of species of medical importance and for the assessment of population dynamics. In this work, we investigated the metric differentiation of the wings of Ae. albopictus samples collected over a four-year period (2007-2010) in São Paulo, Brazil. Wing size significantly decreased during this period for both sexes and the wing shape also changed over time, with the wing shapes of males showing greater differences after 2008 and those of females differing more after 2009. Given that the wings play sex-specific roles, these findings suggest that the males and females could be affected by differential evolutionary pressures. Consistent with this hypothesis, a sexually dimorphic pattern was detected and quantified: the females were larger than the males (with respect to the mean) and had a distinct wing shape, regardless of allometric effects. In conclusion, wing alterations, particularly those involving shape, are a sensitive indicator of microevolutionary processes in this species.

A ubiquitous assessment of swimming velocity (main metric of the performance) is essential for the coach to provide a tailored feedback to the trainee. We present a probabilistic framework for the data-driven estimation of the swimming velocity at every cycle using a low-cost wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU). The statistical validation of the method on 15 swimmers shows that an average relative error of 0.1 ± 9.6% and high correlation with the tethered reference system (rX,Y=0.91 ) is achievable. Besides, a simple tool to analyze the influence of sacrum kinematics on the performance is provided.
