The coordination compounds [Ni(μ-mal)(apy)2(H 2O)]·2.8H2O (1), [Mn(μ-mal)(H2O) 2] (2), (apyH)2[Cu(μ-mal)2] (3) and (apyH)2[Co(mal)2(H2O)2] (4) (mal = malonate, apy = p-aminopyridine) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, vibrational spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetometry. With exception of 4, the malonate group acts as bridging ligand leading to the formation of one-dimensional polymeric chains. In compound 1 it was observed the coordination of the p-aminopyridine in the axial positions of the distorted octahedral coordination sphere. The solid-state structure exhibits a high complex 3D network formed by several supramolecular interactions. Magnetic properties were determined for all members of the series and indicate that the materials behave are normal paramagnets, except the Mn polymer 2 which exhibits an antiferromagnetic ground state. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The influence of current density, at the interval 5-100 mA cm-2, on the structural and magnetic properties of electrodeposited (Co 100-xNix)100-yWy alloys (x = 23-33.5 at. % Ni, y = 1.7-7.3 at. % W) was studied from a glycine-containing bath. W-content decreases with the increase of the current density magnitude. X-ray data have shown stabilization of hexagonal close packed, face centered cubic or a mixture of these structures by modulating the applied cathodic current density, for values lower than 50 mA cm-2. Two structural phase transitions were observed: one from hexagonal close packed to face centered cubic structural transition occurring for a current density of 20 mA cm -2, and another one, from cubic crystalline phase to amorphous state, which happens for values higher than 50 mA cm-2. These structural phase transitions seem to be associated with the W-content as well as average crystalline grain sizes that reduce with increasing the current density value. The grain size effect may explain the face centered cubic stabilization in Co-rich CoNiW alloys, which was initially assumed to be basically due to H-adsorption/incorporation. Magnetic properties of Co-rich CoNiW alloys are strongly modified by the current density value; as a result of the changes on the W-content and their structural properties© 2013 Elsevier B.V. To evaluate variations of some anatomic structures of sellar and parasellar regions and their possible differences between genders and age groups. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) of 380 patients were performed to analyze the dimensions of the sphenoid sinus, pituitary gland, optic chiasm, intra-cavernous carotid distances, distance between columella nasal - sphenoid sinus; and columella nasal-pituitary gland. The patients age ranged between 20 and 80 years (mean age 48 years). The study included 235 females (mean age 53 years) and 145 males (mean age 40 years). The transverse length of the pituitary, the inter-carotid distance and the height of the pituitary were similar between genders and age groups. The width and height of the optic chiasm showed differences only between females of different ages. Males presented greater distances between nasal columella and sphenoid sinus. The most common type of pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus was the sellar, and depending on the age group, sphenoid sinus was larger in males than females. The anatomy of the Sellar and parasellar regions is complex and varies widely within the normal range. They are a small area, rich in anatomical details affecting multiple physiological systems in the body and, therefore, have great importance in several medical fields. A better understanding of these complex structures is essential in clinical diagnosis and treatment of disease.

PURPOSE: To investigate the accuracy of 1.0T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to measure the ventricular size in experimental hydrocephalus in pup rats. METHODS: Wistar rats were subjected to hydrocephalus by intracisternal injection of 20% kaolin (n=13). Ten rats remained uninjected to be used as controls. At the endpoint of experiment animals were submitted to MRI of brain and killed. The ventricular size was assessed using three measures: ventricular ratio (VR), the cortical thickness (Cx) and the ventricles area (VA), performed on photographs of anatomical sections and MRI. RESULTS: The images obtained through MR present enough quality to show the lateral ventricular cavities but not to demonstrate the difference between the cortex and the white matter, as well as the details of the deep structures of the brain. There were no statistically differences between the measures on anatomical sections and MRI of VR and Cx (p=0.9946 and p=0.5992, respectively). There was difference between VA measured on anatomical sections and MRI (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: The parameters obtained through 1.0T MRI were sufficient in quality to individualize the ventricular cavities and the cerebral cortex, and to calculate the ventricular ratio in hydrocephalus rats when compared to their respective anatomic slice.

Mixtures of 2-(4,5,6,7-tetrafluorobenzimidazol-2-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl (F4BImNN) and 2-(benzi-midazol-2-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl (BImNN.) crystallize as solid solutions (alloys) across a wide range of binary compositions. (F4BImNN)(x)(BImNN)((1-x)) with x < 0.8 gives orthorhombic unit cells, while x >= 0.9 gives monoclinic unit cells. In all crystalline samples, the dominant intermolecular packing is controlled by one-dimensional (1D) hydrogen-bonded chains that lead to quasi-1D ferromagnetic behavior. Magnetic analysis over 0.4-300 K indicates ordering with strong 1D ferromagnetic exchange along the chains (J/k = 12-22 K). Interchain exchange is estimated to be 33- to 150-fold weaker, based on antiferromagnetic ordered phase formation below Neel temperatures in the 0.4-1.2 K range for the various compositions. The ordering temperatures of the orthorhombic samples increase linearly as (1 - x) increases from 0.25 to 1.00. The variation is attributed to increased interchain distance corresponding to decreased interchain exchange, when more F4BImNN is added into the orthorhombic lattice. The monoclinic samples are not part of the same trend, due to the different interchain arrangement associated with the phase change.

In this paper, we present a method to order low temperature (LT) self-assembled ferromagnetic In1-xMnxAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The ordered In1-xMnxAs QDs were grown on top of a non-magnetic In0.4Ga0.6As/GaAs(100) QDs multi-layered structure. The modulation of the chemical potential, due to the stacking, provides a nucleation center for the LT In1-xMnxAs QDs. For particular conditions, such as surface morphology and growth conditions, the In1-xMnxAs QDs align along lines like chains. This work also reports the characterization of QDs grown on plain GaAs(100) substrates, as well as of the ordered structures, as function of Mn content and growth temperature. The substitutional Mn incorporation in the InAs lattice and the conditions for obtaining coherent and incoherent structures are discussed from comparison between Raman spectroscopy and x-ray analysis. Ferromagnetic behavior was observed for all structures at 2K. We found that the magnetic moment axis changes from [110] in In1-xMnxAs over GaAs to [1-10] for the ordered In1-xMnxAs grown over GaAs template. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Two novel coordination polymers with the formula {[Ln(2)(2,5-tdc)(3)(dmso)(2)].H2O}(n) (Ln = Tb(III) for (1) and Dy(III) for (2)), (2,5-tdc(2-) = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate and dmso = dimethylsulfoxide) have been synthesized by the diffusion method and characterized by thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Structure analysis reveals that 2,5-tdc(2-) play a versatile role toward different lanthanide ions to form three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in which the lanthanides ions are heptacoordinated. Photophysical properties were studied using excitation and emission spectra, where the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions D-5(4 ->) F-7(J) (J= 6, 5, 4 and 3) for (1) and (F9/2 -> HJ)-F-4-H-6 (J = 15/2, 13/2 and 11/2) for (2), indicating that 2,5-tdc(2-) is a good sensitizer. Introduction: Impairments in facial emotion recognition (PER) have been reported in bipolar disorder (BD) during all mood states. FER has been the focus of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies evaluating differential activation of limbic regions. Recently, the alpha 1-C subunit of the L-type voltage-gated calcium channel (CACNA1C) gene has been described as a risk gene for BD and its Met allele found to increase CACNA1C mRNA expression. In healthy controls, the CACNA1C risk (Met) allele has been reported to increase limbic system activation during emotional stimuli and also to impact on cognitive function. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of CACNA1C genotype on FER scores and limbic system morphology in subjects with BD and healthy controls. Material and methods: Thirty-nine euthymic BD I subjects and 40 healthy controls were submitted to a PER recognition test battery and genotyped for CACNA1C. Subjects were also examined with a 3D 3-Tesla structural imaging protocol. Results: The CACNA1C risk allele for BD was associated to FER impairment in BD, while in controls nothing was observed. The CACNA1C genotype did not impact on amygdala or hippocampus volume neither in BD nor controls. Limitations: Sample size. Conclusion: The present findings suggest that a polymorphism in calcium channels interferes FER phenotype exclusively in BD and doesn't interfere on limbic structures morphology. The weakening mechanisms involved in the collapse of complex impact craters are controversial. The Araguainha impact crater, in Brazil, exposes a complex structure of 40 km in diameter, and is an excellent object to address this issue. Its core is dominated by granite. In addition to microstructural observations, magnetic studies reveal its internal fabric acquired during the collapse phase. All granite samples exhibit impact-related planar deformation features (PDFs) and planar fractures (PFs), which were overprinted by cataclasis. Cataclastic deformation has evolved from incipient brittle fracturing to the development of discrete shear bands in the center of the structure. Fracture planes are systematically decorated by tiny grains (<10 mu m) of magnetite and hematite, and the orientation of magnetic lineation and magnetic foliation obtained by the anisotropies of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and anhysteretic remanence (AAR) are perfectly coaxial in all studied sites. Therefore, we could track the orientation of deformation features which are decorated by iron oxides using the AMS and AAR. The magnetic fabrics show a regular pattern at the borders of the central peak, with orientations consistent with the fabric of sediments at the crater's inner collar and complex in the center of the structure. Both the cataclastic flow revealed from microstructural observations and the structural pattern of the magnetic anisotropy match the predictions from numerical models of complex impact structures. The widespread occurrence of cataclasis in the central peak, and its orientations revealed by magnetic studies indicate that acoustic fluidization likely operates at all scales, including the mineral scales. The cataclastic flow made possible by acoustic fluidization results in an apparent plastic deformation at the macroscopic scale in the core. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper reports on the synthesis (chemical co-precipitation reaction) and characterization (X-ray diffraction, magnetization, and electron paramagnetic resonance) of nanosized Cd1-xMnxS particles with manganese concentration up to x = 0.73. Though the literature reports that nanosized (bulk) CdS can incorporate as much as 30% (50%) of manganese ion within its crystal structure we found manganese segregation at the nanoparticle surface at doping levels as low as 14%. We found that both XRD and magnetization data support the presence of the Mn3O4 phase (observed spin-glass transition around 43 K) at the high manganese doping levels whereas the EPR data strongly suggest preferential incorporation of manganese at the nanoparticle's surface, even at low manganese doping levels. Analyses of the experimental data strongly suggest the preparation of well-defined core/shell (Cd1-xMnxS/Mn3O4) structures at higher levels of manganese doping.

Spin systems in the presence of disorder are described by two sets of degrees of freedom, associated with orientational (spin) and disorder variables, which may be characterized by two distinct relaxation times. Disordered spin models have been mostly investigated in the quenched regime, which is the usual situation in solid state physics, and in which the relaxation time of the disorder variables is much larger than the typical measurement times. In this quenched regime, disorder variables are fixed, and only the orientational variables are duly thermalized. Recent studies in the context of lattice statistical models for the phase diagrams of nematic liquid-crystalline systems have stimulated the interest of going beyond the quenched regime. The phase diagrams predicted by these calculations for a simple Maier-Saupe model turn out to be qualitative different from the quenched case if the two sets of degrees of freedom are allowed to reach thermal equilibrium during the experimental time, which is known as the fully annealed regime. In this work, we develop a transfer matrix formalism to investigate annealed disordered Ising models on two hierarchical structures, the diamond hierarchical lattice (DHL) and the Apollonian network (AN). The calculations follow the same steps used for the analysis of simple uniform systems, which amounts to deriving proper recurrence maps for the thermodynamic and magnetic variables in terms of the generations of the construction of the hierarchical structures. In this context, we may consider different kinds of disorder, and different types of ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic interactions. In the present work, we analyze the effects of dilution, which are produced by the removal of some magnetic ions. The system is treated in a “grand canonical" ensemble. The introduction of two extra fields, related to the concentration of two different types of particles, leads to higher-rank transfer matrices as compared with the formalism for the usual uniform models. Preliminary calculations on a DHL indicate that there is a phase transition for a wide range of dilution concentrations. Ising spin systems on the AN are known to be ferromagnetically ordered at all temperatures; in the presence of dilution, however, there are indications of a disordered (paramagnetic) phase at low concentrations of magnetic ions.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is today precluded to patients bearing active implantable medical devices AIMDs). The great advantages related to this diagnostic modality, together with the increasing number of people benefiting from implantable devices, in particular pacemakers(PM)and carioverter/defibrillators (ICD), is prompting the scientific community the study the possibility to extend MRI also to implanted patients. The MRI induced specific absorption rate (SAR) and the consequent heating of biological tissues is one of the major concerns that makes patients bearing metallic structures contraindicated for MRI scans. To date, both in-vivo and in-vitro studies have demonstrated the potentially dangerous temperature increase caused by the radiofrequency (RF) field generated during MRI procedures in the tissues surrounding thin metallic implants. On the other side, the technical evolution of MRI scanners and of AIMDs together with published data on the lack of adverse events have reopened the interest in this field and suggest that, under given conditions, MRI can be safely performed also in implanted patients. With a better understanding of the hazards of performing MRI scans on implanted patients as well as the development of MRI safe devices, we may soon enter an era where the ability of this imaging modality may be more widely used to assist in the appropriate diagnosis of patients with devices. In this study both experimental measures and numerical analysis were performed. Aim of the study is to systematically investigate the effects of the MRI RF filed on implantable devices and to identify the elements that play a major role in the induced heating. Furthermore, we aimed at developing a realistic numerical model able to simulate the interactions between an RF coil for MRI and biological tissues implanted with a PM, and to predict the induced SAR as a function of the particular path of the PM lead. The methods developed and validated during the PhD program led to the design of an experimental framework for the accurate measure of PM lead heating induced by MRI systems. In addition, numerical models based on Finite-Differences Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations were validated to obtain a general tool for investigating the large number of parameters and factors involved in this complex phenomenon. The results obtained demonstrated that the MRI induced heating on metallic implants is a real risk that represents a contraindication in extending MRI scans also to patient bearing a PM, an ICD, or other thin metallic objects. On the other side, both experimental data and numerical results show that, under particular conditions, MRI procedures might be consider reasonably safe also for an implanted patient. The complexity and the large number of variables involved, make difficult to define a unique set of such conditions: when the benefits of a MRI investigation cannot be obtained using other imaging techniques, the possibility to perform the scan should not be immediately excluded, but some considerations are always needed.

In this work the growth and the magnetic properties of the transition metals molybdenum, niobium, and iron and of the highly-magnetostrictive C15 Laves phases of the RFe2 compounds (R: Rare earth metals: here Tb, Dy, and Tb{0.3}Dy{0.7} deposited on alpha-Al2O3 (sapphire) substrates are analyzed. Next to (11-20) (a-plane) oriented sapphire substrates mainly (10-10) (m-plane) oriented substrates were used. These show a pronounced facetting after high temperature annealing in air. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements reveal a dependence of the height, width, and angle of the facets with the annealing temperature. The observed deviations of the facet angles with respect to the theoretical values of the sapphire (10-1-2) and (10-11) surfaces are explained by cross section high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) measurements. These show the plain formation of the (10-11) surface while the second, energy reduced (10-1-2) facet has a curved shape given by atomic steps of (10-1-2) layers and is formed completely solely at the facet ridges and valleys. Thin films of Mo and Nb, respectively, deposited by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) reveal a non-twinned, (211)-oriented epitaxial growth as well on non-faceted as on faceted sapphire m-plane, as was shown by X-Ray and TEM evaluations. In the case of faceted sapphire the two bcc crystals overgrow the facets homogeneously. Here, the bcc (111) surface is nearly parallel to the sapphire (10-11) facet and the Mo/Nb (100) surface is nearly parallel to the sapphire (10-1-2) surface. (211)-oriented Nb templates on sapphire m-plane can be used for the non-twinned, (211)-oriented growth of RFe2 films by means of MBE. Again, the quality of the RFe2 films grown on faceted sapphire is almost equal to films on the non-faceted substrate. For comparison thin RFe2 films of the established (110) and (111) orientation were prepared. Magnetic and magnetoelastic measurements performed in a self designed setup reveal a high quality of the samples. No difference between samples with undulated and flat morphology can be observed. In addition to the preparation of covering, undulating thin films on faceted sapphire m-plane nanoscopic structures of Nb and Fe were prepared by shallow incidence MBE. The formation of the nanostructures can be explained by a shadowing of the atomic beam due to the facets in addition to de-wetting effects of the metals on the heated sapphire surface. Accordingly, the nanostructures form at the facet ridges and overgrow them. The morphology of the structures can be varied by deposition conditions as was shown for Fe. The shape of the structures vary from pearl-necklet strung spherical nanodots with a diameter of a few 10 nm to oval nanodots of a few 100 nm length to continuous nanowires. Magnetization measurements reveal uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis of magnetization parallel to the facet ridges. The shape of the hysteresis is depending on the morphology of the structures. The magnetization reversal processes of the spherical and oval nanodots were simulated by micromagnetic modelling and can be explained by the formation of magnetic vortices.

A study of maar-diatreme volcanoes has been perfomed by inversion of gravity and magnetic data. The geophysical inverse problem has been solved by means of the damped nonlinear least-squares method. To ensure stability and convergence of the solution of the inverse problem, a mathematical tool, consisting in data weighting and model scaling, has been worked out. Theoretical gravity and magnetic modeling of maar-diatreme volcanoes has been conducted in order to get information, which is used for a simple rough qualitative and/or quantitative interpretation. The information also serves as a priori information to design models for the inversion and/or to assist the interpretation of inversion results. The results of theoretical modeling have been used to roughly estimate the heights and the dip angles of the walls of eight Eifel maar-diatremes — each taken as a whole. Inversemodeling has been conducted for the Schönfeld Maar (magnetics) and the Hausten-Morswiesen Maar (gravity and magnetics). The geometrical parameters of these maars, as well as the density and magnetic properties of the rocks filling them, have been estimated. For a reliable interpretation of the inversion results, beside the knowledge from theoretical modeling, it was resorted to other tools such like field transformations and spectral analysis for complementary information. Geologic models, based on thesynthesis of the respective interpretation results, are presented for the two maars mentioned above. The results gave more insight into the genesis, physics and posteruptive development of the maar-diatreme volcanoes. A classification of the maar-diatreme volcanoes into three main types has been elaborated. Relatively high magnetic anomalies are indicative of scoria cones embeded within maar-diatremes if they are not caused by a strong remanent component of the magnetization. Smaller (weaker) secondary gravity and magnetic anomalies on the background of the main anomaly of a maar-diatreme — especially in the boundary areas — are indicative for subsidence processes, which probably occurred in the late sedimentation phase of the posteruptive development. Contrary to postulates referring to kimberlite pipes, there exists no generalized systematics between diameter and height nor between geophysical anomaly and the dimensions of the maar-diatreme volcanoes. Although both maar-diatreme volcanoes and kimberlite pipes are products of phreatomagmatism, they probably formed in different thermodynamic and hydrogeological environments. In the case of kimberlite pipes, large amounts of magma and groundwater, certainly supplied by deep and large reservoirs, interacted under high pressure and temperature conditions. This led to a long period phreatomagmatic process and hence to the formation of large structures. Concerning the maar-diatreme and tuff-ring-diatreme volcanoes, the phreatomagmatic process takes place due to an interaction between magma from small and shallow magma chambers (probably segregated magmas) and small amounts of near-surface groundwater under low pressure and temperature conditions. This leads to shorter time eruptions and consequently to structures of smaller size in comparison with kimberlite pipes. Nevertheless, the results show that the diameter to height ratio for 50% of the studied maar-diatremes is around 1, whereby the dip angle of the diatreme walls is similar to that of the kimberlite pipes and lies between 70 and 85°. Note that these numerical characteristics, especially the dip angle, hold for the maars the diatremes of which — estimated by modeling — have the shape of a truncated cone. This indicates that the diatreme can not be completely resolved by inversion.
