For the first time in its history, the International Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation migrated to a site outside of the United States. Thus the Eighteenth edition was hosted by the Mazatlán Research Unit of the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología of the Mexican National Autonomous University (UNAM) in Mazatlán, Sinaloa (Mexico) where it was held from 3-7, March, 1998. Above all, our symposium is prominent for its dynamism and enthusiasm in bringing together specialists from the world´s sea turtle populations. In an effort to extend this philosophy, and fully aware of how fast the interest in sea turtles has grown, the organizers paid special attention to bring together as many people as possible. With the tremendous efforts of the Travel Committee and coupled with a special interest by the Latin American region´s devotees, we managed to get 653 participants from 43 countries. The number of presentations increased significantly too, reaching a total of 265 papers, ranging from cutting-edge scientific reports based on highly sophisticated methods, to the experiences and successes of community-based and environmental education programs. A priority given by this symposium was the support and encouragement for the construction of "bridges" across cultural and discipline barriers. We found success in achieving a multinational dialogue among interest groups- scientists, resource managers, decision makers, ngo's, private industry. There was a broad representation of the broad interests that stretch across these sectors, yet everyone was able to listen and offer their own best contribution towards the central theme of the Symposium: the conservation of sea turtles and the diversity of marine and coastal environments in which they develop through their complicated and protracted life cycle. Our multidisciplinary approach is highly important at the present, finding ourselves at a cross roads of significant initiatives in the international arena of environmental law, where the conservation of sea turtles has a key role to play. Many, many people worked hard over the previous 12 months, to make the symposium a success. Without knowledge of basic seafloor characteristics, the ability to address any number of critical marine and/or coastal management issues is diminished. For example, management and conservation of essential fish habitat (EFH), a requirement mandated by federally guided fishery management plans (FMPs), requires among other things a description of habitats for federally managed species. Although the list of attributes important to habitat are numerous, the ability to efficiently and effectively describe many, and especially at the scales required, does not exist with the tools currently available. However, several characteristics of seafloor morphology are readily obtainable at multiple scales and can serve as useful descriptors of habitat. Recent advancements in acoustic technology, such as multibeam echosounding (MBES), can provide remote indication of surficial sediment properties such as texture, hardness, or roughness, and further permit highly detailed renderings of seafloor morphology. With acoustic-based surveys providing a relatively efficient method for data acquisition, there exists a need for efficient and reproducible automated segmentation routines to process the data. Using MBES data collected by the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS), and through a contracted seafloor survey, we expanded on the techniques of Cutter et al. (2003) to describe an objective repeatable process that uses parameterized local Fourier histogram (LFH) texture features to automate segmentation of surficial sediments from acoustic imagery using a maximum likelihood decision rule. Sonar signatures and classification performance were evaluated using video imagery obtained from a towed camera sled. Segmented raster images were converted to polygon features and attributed using a hierarchical deep-water marine benthic classification scheme (Greene et al. 1999) for use in a geographical information system (GIS). If a product is being designed to be genuinely inclusive, then the designers need to be able to assess the level of exclusion of the product that they are working on and to identify possible areas of improvement. To be of practical use, the assessments need to be quick, consistent and repeatable. The aim of this workshop is to invite attendees to participate in the evaluation of a number of everyday objects using an assessment technique being considered by the workshop organisers. The objectives of the workshop include evaluating the effectiveness of the assessment method, evaluating the accessibility of the products being assessed and to suggest revisions to the assessment scales being used. The assessment technique is to be based on the ONS capability measures [1]. This source recognises fourteen capability scales of which seven are particularly pertinent to product evaluation, namely: motion, dexterity, reach and stretch, vision, hearing, communication, and intellectual functioning. Each of these scales ranges from 0 (fully able) through 1 (minimal impairment) to 10 (severe impairment). The attendees will be asked to rate the products on these scales. Clearly the assessed accessibility of the product depends on the assumptions made about the context of use. The attendees will be asked to clearly note the assumptions that they are making about the context in which the product is being assessed. For instance, with a hot water bottle, assumptions have to be made about the availability of hot water and these can affect the overall accessibility rating. The workshop organisers will not specify the context of use as the aim is to identify how assessors would use the assessment method in the real world. The objects being assessed will include items such as remote controls, pill bottles, food packaging, hot water bottles and mobile telephones. the attendees will be encouraged to assess two or more products in detail. Helpers will be on hand to assist and observe the assessments. The assessments will be collated and compared and feedback about the assessment method sought from the attendees. Drawing on a preliminary review of the assessment results, initial conclusions will be presented at the end of the workshop. More detailed analyses will be made available in subsequent proceedings. It is intended that the workshop will provide workshop attendees with an opportunity to perform hands-on assessment of a number everyday products and identify features which are inclusive and those that are not. It is also intended to encourage an appreciation of the capabilities to be considered when evaluating accessibility.

The aim of the project is to determine the shelf life of ready mussel products when frozen and stored at –20 ± 2 °C. Two kinds of flour were used (plain and spiced). The products were stored on styrofoam tablets and covered by stretch film at –20 ± 2 °C. During storage physical, sensorical and chemical analyses were made once a month. We found that the shelf life of the ready mussel product is 120 days dependent on sensorical, physical and chemical parameters.

Strong mechanical forces can, obviously, disrupt cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesions, e.g., cyclic uniaxial stretch induces instability of cell adhesion, which then causes the reorientation of cells away from the stretching direction. However, recent experiments also demonstrated the existence of force dependent adhesion growth (rather than dissociation). To provide a quantitative explanation for the two seemingly contradictory phenomena, a microscopic model that includes both integrin-integrin interaction and integrin-ligand interaction is developed at molecular level by treating the focal adhesion as an adhesion cluster. The integrin clustering dynamics and integrin-ligand binding dynamics are then simulated within one unified theoretical frame with Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the focal adhesion will grow when the traction force is higher than a relative small threshold value, and the growth is dominated by the reduction of local chemical potential energy by the traction force. In contrast, the focal adhesion will rupture when the traction force exceeds a second threshold value, and the rupture is dominated by the breaking of integrin-ligand bonds. Consistent with the experiments, these results suggest a force map for various responses of cell adhesion to different scales of mechanical force. PMID: 20542514

Biological studies of Heterotis niloticus were conducted for three years in the middle River Niger. Scales were found to be the most suitable structure in ageing Heterotis which was validated by length/histogram curve. Annual rings were found to be formed between March to June. Growth was rapid in the first two years and they reached sexual maturity at 2 years. The male grow longer while the female are bulkier. The length-weight relationship of male and female Heterotis did not differ significantly and the resulting equation for male was W = 1.25L super(2.5) and W = 1.6L super(2.7) for females respectively where W = weight (g) and L = total length. The total length to body scale relationship was found to be L = 14.3R super(2.6) where (R = oral radius of scale Heterotis growth was found to be allometric

Effects of flame stretch on the laminar burning velocities of near-limit fuel-lean methane/air flames have been studied experimentally using a microgravity environment to minimize the complications of buoyancy. Outwardly propagating spherical flames were employed to assess the sensitivities of the laminar burning velocity to flame stretch, represented by Markstein lengths, and the fundamental laminar burning velocities of unstretched flames. Resulting data were reported for methane/air mixtures at ambient temperature and pressure, over the specific range of equivalence ratio that extended from 0.512 (the microgravity flammability limit found in the combustion chamber) to 0.601. Present measurements of unstretched laminar burning velocities were in good agreement with the unique existing microgravity data set at all measured equivalence ratios. Most of previous 1-g experiments using a variety of experimental techniques, however, appeared to give significantly higher burning velocities than the microgravity results. Furthermore, the burning velocities predicted by three chemical reaction mechanisms, which have been tuned primarily under off-limit conditions, were also considerably higher than the present experimental data. Additional results of the present investigation were derived for the overall activation energy and corresponding Zeldovich numbers, and the variation of the global flame Lewis numbers with equivalence ratio. This thesis presents structural investigations of molecular ions and ionic clusters using vibrational predissociation spectroscopy. Experimentally, a pulsed beam of the mass-selected ion is crossed by a tunable infrared laser beam generated by a Nd:YAG pumped LiNbO_3 optical parametric oscillator. The resulting fragment ion is mass-analyzed and detected, with its intensity as a function of the laser wavelength being the "action" spectrum of the parent ion. In the case of SiH_7^+, we observed a vibrational band centered at 3866 cm^(-1) with clear P, Q, R branches, which is assigned as a perturbed H_2 stretch. The absence of a second H_2 band suggests that the ion forms a symmetric complex with a structure H_2•SiH_3^+•H_2 , in contrast to the species CH_7^+, which has the structure CH_5^+•H_2. The infrared spectra of NO_2^+(H_2O)_n clusters exhibit a marked change with cluster size, indicating that an intracluster reaction occurs with sufficient solvation. Specifically, in NO_2^+(H_2O)_n clusters where n≤3, H_2O binds to a nitronium ion core; but at n=4 the NO_2^+ reacts, transforming the cluster to a new structure of H_3O^+•(H_2O)_(n_2)•HNO_3. For protonated chlorine nitrate, we have observed two distinct isomers previously predicted by ab initio calculations: NO_2^+•(HOC1), the lowest energy isomer, and (ClO)(HO)NO^+, a covalently bonded isomer about 20 kcal/mol higher in energy. Both isomers decompose to NO_2^+ and HOCl upon photo-excitation. These results for HClONO_2^+ lend strong support to the involvement of an ionic mechanism in the reaction of ClONO_2 on polar stratospheric cloud surfaces, a critical step in the dramatic springtime depletion of ozone over Antarctica. Current research activities on halide-solvent clusters and metal-ligand complexes as well as technological improvements of the apparatus are also discussed.

Spectroscopic investigations of hydrogen-bonding and van der Waals' interactions m molecular clusters were studied by the techniques of infrared predissociation and resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopies (REMPI). Ab initio calculations were applied in conjunction for data interpretation.

The infrared predissociation spectroscopy of CN^-•(H_2O)_n (n = 2 - 6) clusters was reported in the region of 2950 - 3850 cm^(-1). The hydrogen bondings for the C-site and N-site binding, and among the water molecules were identified for n = 2 to 4. A spectral transition was observed for n = 5 and 6, implying that the anion was surface-bound onto the water aggregates in larger clusters.

The infrared predissociation spectroscopy of Br^-•(NH_3) and I^-•(NH_3)_n (n =1-3) clusters was reported in the region of 3050-3450 cm^(-1). For the Br^-•(NH_3) complex, a dominating ionic NH stretch appeared at 3175 cm^(-1), and the weaker free NH stretch appeared at 3348 cm^(-1). The observed spectrum was consistent to the structure in which there was one nearly linear hydrogen bond between Br^- and the NH_3 moiety. For the I^- •(NH_3) complex, five distinct IR absorption bands were observed in the spectrum. The spectrum was not consistent with basic frequency patterns of three geometries considered in the ab initio calculations - complex with one, two and three hydrogen bondings between I^- and the NH_3 moiety. Substantial inhomogenous broadening were displayed in the spectra for I^-•(NH_3)_n (n =2-3), suggesting the presence of multiple isomers.

The REMPI spectroscopy of the bound 4p ^2П 1/2 and ^2П 3/2 states, and the dissociative 3d ^2Σ^+ 1/2 state in the Al•Ar complex was reported. The dissociative spectrum at Al^+ channel suggested the coupling of the 4p ^2П 1/2,3/2 states to the repulsive 3d ^2Σ^+ 1/2 state. The spin-electronic coupling was further manifested in the dissociative Al^+ spectrum of the 3d ^2Σ^+ 1/2 state. Using the potential energy curves obtained from ab initio calculations, a bound → continuum Franck-Condon-intensity simulation was performed and compared with the one-photon 3d ^2Σ^+ 1/2 profile. The agreement provided evidence for the petturbation above the Al(3d)Ar dissociation limit, and the repulsive character of the 3d ^2Σ^+ 1/2 state.

The Young's modulus, stress-strain curves, and failure properties of glass bead-filled EPDM vulcanizates were studied under superposed hydrostatic pressure. The glass bead-filled EPDM was employed as a representation of composite systems, and the hydrostatic pressure controls the filler-elastomer separation under deformation. This separation shows up as a volume change of the system, and its infuence is reflected in the mechanical behavior as a reinforcing effect of variable degree.

The strain energy stored in the composite system in simple tension was calculated by introducing a model which is described as a cylindrical block of elastomer with two half spheres of filler on each end with their centers on the axis of the cylinder. In the derivation of the strain energy, assumptions were made to obtain the strain distribution in the model, and strain energy-strain relation for the elastomer was also assumed. The derivation was carried out for the case of no filler-elastomer separation and was modified to include the case of filler-elastomer separation.

The resulting strain energy, as a function of stretch ratio and volume of the system, was used to obtain stress-strain curves and volume change-strain curves of composite systems under superposed hydrostatic pressure.

Changes in the force and the lateral dimension of a ring specimen were measured as it was stretched axially under a superposed hydrostatic pressure in order to calculate the mechanical properties mentioned above. A tensile tester was used which is capable of sealing the whole system to carry out a measurement under pressure. A thickness measuring device, based on the Hall effect, was built for the measurement of changes in the lateral dimension of a specimen.

The theoretical and experimental results of Young's modulus and stress-strain curves were compared and showed fairly good agreement.

The failure data were discussed in terms of failure surfaces, and it was concluded that a failure surface of the glass-bead-filled EPDM consists of two cones.

n-heptane/air premixed turbulent flames in the high-Karlovitz portion of the thin reaction zone regime are characterized and modeled in this thesis using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) with detailed chemistry. In order to perform these simulations, a time-integration scheme that can efficiently handle the stiffness of the equations solved is developed first. A first simulation with unity Lewis number is considered in order to assess the effect of turbulence on the flame in the absence of differential diffusion. A second simulation with non-unity Lewis numbers is considered to study how turbulence affects differential diffusion. In the absence of differential diffusion, minimal departure from the 1D unstretched flame structure (species vs. temperature profiles) is observed. In the non-unity Lewis number case, the flame structure lies between that of 1D unstretched flames with "laminar" non-unity Lewis numbers and unity Lewis number. This is attributed to effective Lewis numbers resulting from intense turbulent mixing and a first model is proposed. The reaction zone is shown to be thin for both flames, yet large chemical source term fluctuations are observed. The fuel consumption rate is found to be only weakly correlated with stretch, although local extinctions in the non-unity Lewis number case are well correlated with high curvature. These results explain the apparent turbulent flame speeds. Other variables that better correlate with this fuel burning rate are identified through a coordinate transformation. It is shown that the unity Lewis number turbulent flames can be accurately described by a set of 1D (in progress variable space) flamelet equations parameterized by the dissipation rate of the progress variable. In the non-unity Lewis number flames, the flamelet equations suggest a dependence on a second parameter, the diffusion of the progress variable. A new tabulation approach is proposed for the simulation of such flames with these dimensionally-reduced manifolds.

Recently, the amino acid sequences have been reported for several proteins, including the envelope glycoproteins of Sindbis virus, which all probably span the plasma membrane with a common topology: a large N-terminal, extracellular portion, a short region buried in the bilayer, and a short C-terminal intracellular segment. The regions of these proteins buried in the bilayer correspond to portions of the protein sequences which contain a stretch of hydrophobic amino acids and which have other common characteristics, as discussed. Reasons are also described for uncertainty, in some proteins more than others, as to the precise location of some parts of the sequence relative to the membrane.

The signal hypothesis for the transmembrane translocation of proteins is briefly described and its general applicability is reviewed. There are many proteins whose translocation is accurately described by this hypothesis, but some proteins are translocated in a different manner.

The transmembraneous glycoproteins E1 and E2 of Sindbis virus, as well as the only other virion protein, the capsid protein, were purified in amounts sufficient for biochemical analysis using sensitive techniques. The amino acid composition of each protein was determined, and extensive N-terminal sequences were obtained for E1 and E2. By these techniques E1 and E2 are indistinguishable from most water soluble proteins, as they do not contain an obvious excess of hydrophobic amino acids in their N-terminal regions or in the intact molecule.

The capsid protein was found to be blocked, and so its N-terminus could not be sequenced by the usual methods. However, with the use of a special labeling technique, it was possible to incorporate tritiated acetate into the N-terminus of the protein with good specificity, which was useful in the purification of peptides from which the first amino acids in the N-terminal sequence could be identified.

Nanomole amounts of PE2, the intracellular precursor of E2, were purified by an immuno-affinity technique, and its N-terminus was analyzed. Together with other work, these results showed that PE2 is not synthesized with an N-terminal extension, and the signal sequence for translocation is probably the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the protein. This N-terminus was found to be 80-90% blocked, also by Nacetylation, and this acetylation did not affect its function as a signal sequence. The putative signal sequence was also found to contain a glycosylated asparagine residue, but the inhibition of this glycosylation did not lead to the cleavage of the sequence.

Neste trabalho estudou-se a complexação do poli(acrilato de sódio), PAS, com aminpentacianoferrato de sódio,APCF. As reações de complexação ocorreram imediatamente com a formação de uma coloração amarela com total solubilização do polímero na solução 0,032 M molar do complexo. As soluções mostraram-se estáveis por 48 h e após esse período observou-se alterações na natureza do complexo polimérico com a formação de precipitado. O UV foi usado como ferramenta de caracterização do complexo. O máximo de absorção obtido após dissolução imediata foi de 405 nm com desvio para o azul (398 nm) e um pequeno efeito hipercrômico. As amostras mantidas à temperatura ambiente por mais de 48 h deram origem a precipitados, que como a solução, absorveram com máximo de 364, 389 e 398 nm. O Complexo PAS-APCF foi também caracterizado através de FTIR por ATR e apresentou pequenas variações no espectro do material de partida (PAS). Um incremento na intensidade da deformação axial assimétrica do grupo carboxilato (1651 cm-1) e a presença do estiramento em 2055 cm-1 do grupo cianeto, diferentemente do APCF (2048 cm-1), confirmaram a formação do complexo PAS-APCF. As freqüências de absorção observadas para o complexo foram compatíveis com a presença de estruturas mono e bidentadas de complexação. As análises de TGA e DSC também foram utilizadas para a caracterização das estruturas. O estudo modelo envolvendo a complexação de sais sódicos de diácidos orgânicos de diferentes tamanhos de cadeia (oxalato, malonato, succinato, glutarato e adipato), diferentemente do PAS, promoveu um desvio para o vermelho na frequência máxima de absorção junto de um pequeno efeito hipercrômico (421 nm). Esta variação pode também ser observada quando do emprego de acetato de sódio, indicando, provavelmente, apenas a formação de estruturas monodentadas
