The effective and efficient management of diversified business firms that supply multiple products and operate in multiple, dynamic markets, especially large multinational enterprises (MNEs), builds upon a number of specific governance principles. These governance principles allow the alignment of environmental characteristics, strategy and organization. Given the rising need to “learn from the world”, Doz et al., in their influential Harvard Business School Press book entitled From Global to Metanational, have proposed a new set of governance principles described under the “metanational” umbrella concept. This paper revisits the metanational, using a comparative institutional perspective; here we contrast multidivisional and metanational governance principles. A comparative institutional analysis suggests that the metanational's application potential in terms of actually improving the effectiveness and efficiency of MNE governance may be subject to more qualification than suggested by Doz et al. Senior MNE management must therefore reflect carefully before substituting metanational governance principles for the more conventional, multidivisional ones with established contributions to managerial effectiveness and efficiency.

The article looks at the role of consumers' social identities in their purchasing decisions, and hence in the creation of effective marketing strategies. It says that people generally belong to multiple social groups, any one of which may have the most salience for them in a given situation. It reports on social psychology research on how a person's connection with a particular social identity can be triggered and discusses the idea in the context of marketing products including the Toyota Prius hybrid-electric automobile, Nescafé instant coffee, and the Jeep all-terrain vehicle. The paper examines the process of bank internationalisation and explores how banks become international organisations and what this involves. It also makes an assessment of the significance of their international operations and determines whether banks are truly global organisations. The empirical data are based on the 60 largest banks in the world and content analysis is used to categorise the information into the eight international strategies of Atamer, Calori, Gustavsson, and Menguzzato-Boulard [Internationalisation strategies. In R. Calori, T. Atamer, & P. Nunes (Eds.), The dynamics of international competition – from practice to theory, strategy series (pp. 162–206). London: Sage (2000)] and Bryan, Fraser, Oppenheim, and Rall [Race for the World strategies to build a great global firm. Boston, MA: Harvard Business School Press (1999)]. The findings suggest that the majority of banks focus on countries or geographic regions in which they have some sort of cultural or economic affinity. Moreover, apart from a relatively small number of very large banks, they are international rather than truly global organisations.

We describe 17 children with nocturnal or early-morning seizures who were switched to a proportionally higher evening dose of antiepileptic drugs and were retrospectively reviewed for seizure outcome and side effects. Of 10 children with unknown etiology, clinical presentation was consistent with nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE) in 5 and benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) in 3. After a mean follow-up of 5.3 months, 15 patients were classified as responders: 11 of these became seizure free (5 NFLE, 1 BECTS, 5 with structural lesions) and 4 (2 BECTS, 2 with structural lesions) experienced 75-90% reductions in seizures. Among two nonresponders, seizures in one had failed to resolve with epilepsy surgery. Nine subjects (53%) received monotherapy after dose modification, and none presented with worsening of seizures. Two complained of transient side effects (fatigue/somnolence). Differential dosing led to seizure freedom in 64.7% (11/17) of patients, and 88.2% (15/17) experienced >= 50% reductions in seizures. A presente dissertação visa investigar, dentro de uma abordagem dialética, a visão do trabalhador-executivo, pertencente ao grupo dos "bem-sucedidos", a cerca da realidade de deterioração da qualidade de vida no trabalho. Definimos como "bem-sucedidos" aqueles cuja alta qualificação acadêmica e profissional lhes possibilitam maior poder de escolha dentro do mercado de trabalho e, teoricamente, acesso a empregos por eles considerados mais próximos do ideal. No âmbito dessa dissertação nossos "bem-sucedidos" serão os "white-collars" detentores de MBA pela Harvard Business School, atualmente ocupando posições de gerência média em organizações. Ao longo desse trabalho discutiremos o papel dos downsizings e das reengenharias, bem como da nova revolução tecnológica, da redução do espaço fisico de trabalho a cubículos e da primazia da mentalidade gerencial "Wall-Street" na geração crescente de estresse e medo no trabalho e, consequentemente deterioração da QVT. Em seguida, avaliaremos os custos dessa deterioração da QVT e de que forma as próprias organizações estão indiretamente gerando as bases de uma emergente crise de criatividade, de saúde no trabalho e de corrosão de caráter dos seus trabalhadores. Partiremos, então, para a caracterização de nosso grupo amostral, levantando também a provável influência da cultura "Harvard" e do estigma de sucesso (com todos, os seus paradoxos) como fatores relevantes a serem considerados na análise das entrevistas e das possíveis contradições do discurso. Finalmente, a análise das entrevistas nos levará a conclusão de que QVT parece estar sendo transacionada por outros atributos como remuneração, justamente por aqueles que estariam em posição de almejarem ambos. A aparente perda da importância da QVT parece estar associada, principalmente, à transformação do trabalho em experiências transitórios sob a primazia da empregabilidade e do culto à flexibilidade. O desconcertante das reações apreendidas nas entrevistas é a sinalização de uma tendência que a cada dia parece se tornar mais realidade: a de que as práticas organizacionais trouxeram como efeito colateral danoso não apenas a corrosão do caráter do trabalhador, mas a própria fragmentação da idéia de vida no trabalho e fora dele

A questão sobre competitividade tem recebido muita atenção nos últimos anos, sobretudo nos Estados Unidos, Europa e Japão. Um dos maiores estímulos deste interesse tem sido o trabalho do Professor Michael E. Porter da Harvard Business School. No Brasil, são poucas as informações publicadas sobre a aplicação do modelo de Porter, apesar de ser amplamente conhecido no meio acadêmico mais desenvolvido e na esfera das grandes empresas

O livro começa com reflexões de diretores de quatro importantes escolas globais de Direito. Em seguida, professores discutem aspectos teóricos importantes - circulação de ideias, criação de sentidos, expansão da criatividade e postura cosmopolita - e outros compartilham sua experiência sobre possibilidades e limites do ensino jurídico globalizado. Há, ainda, o registro de uma conferência na Harvard Law School para discutir o tema, um ensaio com especulações sobre o futuro e um parecer sobre periódicos jurídicos internacionais. Temos colaboradores de universidades do Brasil, Colômbia, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Africa do Sul e Suíça.

(c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S Background and Objective: To compare the levels of Selenomonas sputigena and uncultivated/unrecognized Selenomonas species in subgingival biofilms from periodontally healthy subjects and from subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis. Material and Methods: Fifteen periodontally healthy subjects and 15 subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis were recruited and their clinical periodontal parameters were evaluated. Nine subgingival plaque samples were collected from each subject and all were individually analyzed for the levels of 10 bacterial taxa, including cultured and uncultivated/unrecognized microorganisms, using the RNA-oligonucleotide quantification technique. Between-group differences in the levels of the test taxa were determined using the MannWhitney U-test. Results: Subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis showed significantly higher mean counts of Porphyromonas gingivalis, S. sputigena and the Mitsuokella sp. Human Oral Taxon (HOT) 131 (previously described as Selenomonas sp. oral clone CS002), while higher mean counts of Actinomyces gerencseriae and Streptococcus sanguinis were found in periodontally healthy subjects (p < 0.01). Selenomonas sp. HOT 146 was only detected in the generalized aggressive periodontitis group. In the generalized aggressive periodontitis group, the levels of P.gingivalis and S.sputigena were higher in deep sites (probing depth = 5 mm) than in shallow sites (probing depth = 3 mm) (p < 0.01). Furthermore, in subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis, sites with probing depth of = 3 mm harbored higher levels of these two species than sites with the same probing depth in periodontally healthy subjects. There were positive correlations between probing depth and the levels of P.gingivalis (r = 0.77; p < 0.01), S.sputigena (r = 0.60; p < 0.01) and Selenomonas dianae (previously described as Selenomonas sp. oral clone EW076) (r = 0.42, p < 0.05). Conclusion: S. sputigena and Mitsuokella sp. HOT 131 may be associated with the pathogenesis of generalized aggressive periodontitis, and their role in the onset and progression of this infection should be investigated further.

Recent studies have implicated the dying cell as a potential reservoir of modified autoantigens that might initiate and drive systemic autoimmunity in susceptible hosts. A number of subunits of the exosome, a complex of 3'→5' exoribonucleases that functions in a variety of cellular processes, are recognized by the so-called anti-PM/Scl autoantibodies, found predominantly in patients suffering from an overlap syndrome of myositis and scleroderma. Here we show that one of these subunits, PM/Scl-75, is cleaved during apoptosis. PM/Scl-75 cleavage is inhibited by several different caspase inhibitors. The analysis of PM/Scl-75 cleavage by recombinant caspase proteins shows that PM/Scl-75 is efficiently cleaved by caspase-1, to a smaller extent by caspase-8, and relatively inefficiently by caspase-3 and caspase-7. Cleavage of the PM/Scl-75 protein occurs in the C-terminal part of the protein at Asp369 (IILD369↓G), and at least a fraction of the resulting N-terminal fragments of PM/Scl-75 remains associated with the exosome. Finally, the implications of PM/Scl-75 cleavage for exosome function and the generation of anti-PM/Scl-75 autoantibodies are discussed.

The focus of this research is to develop and apply an analytical framework for evaluating the effectiveness and practicability of sustainability certification schemes for biofuels, especially in a developing country’s perspective. The main question that drives the research analysis is “Which are the main elements of and how to develop sustainability certification schemes that would be effective and practicable in certifying the contribution of biofuels in meeting the goals Governments and other stakeholders have set up?”. Biofuels have been identified as a promising tool to reach a variety of goals: climate change protection, energy security, agriculture development, and, especially in developing countries, economic development. Once the goals have been identified, and ambitious mandatory targets for biofuels use agreed at national level, concerns have been raised by the scientific community on the negative externalities that biofuels production and use can have at environment, social and economic level. Therefore certification schemes have been recognized as necessary processes to measure these externalities, and examples of such schemes are in effect, or are in a negotiating phase, both at mandatory and voluntary levels. The research focus has emerged by the concern that the ongoing examples are very demanding in terms of compliance, both for those that are subject to certification and those that have to certify, on the quantity and quality of information to be reported. A certification system, for reasons linked to costs, lack of expertise, inadequate infrastructure, absence of an administrative and legislative support, can represent an intensive burden and can act as a serious impediment for the industrial and agriculture development of developing countries, going against the principle of equity and level playing field. While this research recognizes the importance of comprehensiveness and ambition in designing an important tool for the measurement of sustainability effects of biofuels production and use, it stresses the need to focus on the effectiveness and practicability of this tool in measuring the compliance with the goal. This research that falls under the rationale of the Sustainability Science Program housed at Harvard Kennedy School, has as main objective to close the gap between the research and policy makers worlds in the field of sustainability certification schemes for biofuels.

Il progetto Eye-Trauma si colloca all'interno dello sviluppo di un simulatore chirurgico per traumi alla zona oculare, sviluppato in collaborazione con Simulation Group in Boston, Harvard Medical School e Massachusetts General Hospital. Il simulatore presenta un busto in silicone fornito di moduli intercambiabili della zona oculare, per simulare diversi tipi di trauma. L'utilizzatore è chiamato ad eseguire la procedura medica di saturazione tramite degli strumenti chirurgici su cui sono installati dei sensori di forza e di apertura. I dati collezionati vengono utilizzati all'interno del software per il riconoscimento dei gesti e il controllo real-time della performance. L'algoritmo di gesture recognition, da me sviluppato, si basa sul concetto di macchine a stati; la transizione tra gli stati avviene in base agli eventi rilevati dal simulatore.
