Recently there is a great quest of producing alcohol from starchy resources, replacing the sugar cane. The most common starchy sources are cassava, maize and sweet potatoes and a lot of research are been realized with excellent results. In this work it was evaluated the influence of the concentration of dry matter on the enzymatic hydrolysis process of starch from sweet potato for ethanol production. Through the sweet potato was produced a flour using a low-cost method and easy operation equipments. The sweet potato flour was characterized physical and chemically and from these results was prepared the treatments for enzymatic hydrolysis. The experimental design considered as independent variable the dry matter concentration of the sweet potato flour in 3 levels; 10, 15 and 20% in the formulation of suspensions. The other variables were keeping constant being: temperature in the 1° hydrolysis step of 90°C and time of 2 hours; temperature in the 2° saccharification step of 60°C and time of 17 hours. The hydrolysates obtained at the three assays were transferred to six liter enlerynmeyer and inoculated with a biologic catalyst, Saccharomyces, dehydrated yeasts of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CAT 1, at a rate of 5% in weight. The flasks were placed in a shaker type orbital with controlled temperature of 30°C during a time of 15 hours. The initial reducer sugars concentration and respective ethanol concentrations in wine were: 11.2% glucose and 2.16% ethanol in the suspension with 10% of dry matter; 13.5% glucose and 4.39% ethanol with 15% and 17.5% glucose and 6.03% ethanol in suspension with 20% of dry matter. ix The results showed that the higher percentage of dry matter carried out to higher sugar yield in hydrolyzed. It was possible observed that products quality improved with a higher concentration of dry matter

Essential oils are products from plants and can be located in parts or in its entirety. There are several methods for its extraction, where the most suitable depends on the plant or the use of the essence. The main species cultivated in Brazil are the Corymbia citriodora, Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus staigeriana. The Corymbia citriodora is a species that was introduced in Brazil along with other species, with the initial objective of timber production. The yield of oil can range from 0.5 % to 3.0% according to the literature and this can be optimized by reducing the moisture content of the leaves. Studies show that the lower water content in the leaves allows the vapor stream generated in the extractor can drag, more efficiently, the volatiles stored in the cells as compared with the green material. The drying of the sheets is important for companies, so that there is transport of water, increasing the volume of the sheets to distillation and hence a greater volume of oil. The objective of this study was to compare the drying methods, analyzing the income of the essence and determine the best method to optimize the yield of essential oil. Experimental tests were performed natural drying 10, 15 and 20 days and fluidized with times of 60, 90 and 120 minutes and after drying were extractions of the oil. The results obtained for fresh leave yield was 1.20 % and the drying time which showed the highest yield was 15 and 20 days with 2.90 % and 2.70 % yield, respectively, with the lowest level humidity of 16%. The yields obtained in fluidized bed drying did not change as the natural drying to between 1.64% and 1.7%. It is concluded that the decreased level of the sheets increases the yield of oil and the temperature in the fluidized bed is essential for the removal of water from the leaves necessary to increase the yield

Ethanol, the main automotive biofuel, has its production based on the fermentation of sugars found in biological materials and on the distillation of the alcoholic media formed during the fermentative process. Stillage is the main residue from ethanol production, containing a high organic loading in addition to acidic and corrosive characteristics. Considering the available technologies to treat stillage, we highlight anaerobic digestion, which allows the reduction of the impacts associated to pollutants loading of this effluent and the generation of energy from the methane gas produced in the process. Based on the high treatment efficiency usually associated to the anaerobic process, this work aimed to assess whether anaerobic systems applied to the treatment of stillage are energetically self-sufficient. First we evaluated the energy recovery capacity in an anaerobic reactor applied to the treatment of stillage resulting from corn-to-ethanol processing. The results indicated the great influence that a correct selection of electrical equipment and their respective operating periods have on the net energy balance of the anaerobic treatment. The high energy consumption of the heater would not allow the system to achieve a positive net energy balance – the maximum energy recovery would reach only 0.68% of the consumption. However, the replacement of the mixture equipment would result in energy gains ranging from 8.5 to 967.9% of the consumption. In this work we also assessed the efficiency of methane yields for a few studies and the correlation between some parameters of the anaerobic process. With respect to the methane yield, we noted that mesophilic systems tend to be more advantageous than the thermophilic ones (efficiency of 76.45 ± 22.51% vs. 69.40 ± 30.36%). Considering the study... The application of microwave radiation on the sample preparation has been expanding increasingly in areas involving decomposition by wet and dry roads, fusion, extraction, acceleration of chemical reactions, for example. Currently, the use of microwave ovens for analytical purposes are recognized for having excellent performance for organic and inorganic samples. In the international market there are several kinds of microwaves oven which adapt the varied purposes, however yet with elevated prices which incapacitate your use as routine equipment in laboratory. Thus, many researchers have been choosing for developing own projects of microwaves oven production or to use domestic oven for the laboratory, with or without adaptations. For the evaluation of the proposed method was used in the Kjeldahl methodology for determining total nitrogen in samples of crude protein, using a domestic microwave oven and a digester pot made up in TeflonTM and distillation by steam. Were made to adapt and characterization of a domestic microwave oven, the confeccion vessel digester and the metal support for the vessel. The accuracy of the proposed method was confirmed by comparison of two methods, the standard method for conventional heating and by the proposed method, with heating by microwave radiation through the calculated values of relative standard deviation analysis

Japanese cornmint, also known as menthol mint (Mentiza canadensis L. syn M. arvensis L.), is an essential oil crop cultivated in several countries in Asia and South America. The plant is currently the only commercially viable source for natural menthol as a result of the high concentration of menthol in the oil compared with other crops. The hypothesis of this study was that harvesting at regular intervals within a 24-hour period would have an effect on essential oil concentration and composition of Japanese cornmint grown at high altitude in northern Wyoming. Flowering plants were harvested every 2 hours on 7 to 8 Aug. and on 14 to 15 Aug. and the essential oil was extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The effects of harvest date (Harvest 1 and Harvest 2) and harvest time (12 times within a 24-hour period) were significant on oil concentration and yield of menthol, but only harvest date was significant on the concentration of menthol in the oil. The interaction effect of harvest date and harvest time was significant on water content and on the concentrations of menthol and menthofuran in the oil and on the yield of limonene, menthol, and menthofuran. Overall, the oil concentration in grams per 100 g dried material for the two harvests (1.26 and 1.45, respectively), the concentration of menthol in the oil (67.2% and 72.9%, respectively), and menthol yield (1066 to 849 mg/100 g dried biomass) were higher in plants at Harvest 2 as compared with plants at Harvest 1. The oil concentration was higher in plants harvested at 1100 HR or at 1300 am and lowest in the plants harvested at 1500 BR. Menthol yield was the highest in plants harvested at 1300 HR and lowest in the plants harvested at 0700 HR, 1900 am, or at 0300 HR. This study demonstrated that harvesting time within a 24-hour period and harvest date (maturity of the crop) may affect essential oil concentration and composition of Japanese cornmint grown at high altitude in northern Wyoming.

The objective of this work was the analysis of the energetic ethanol production systems using as source of carbohydrates, manioc, sugar cane and maize crops. The searches were carried from the field in the Paranapanema River Valley, state of Sao Paulo in the operations of cultivation and industrial processing of raw materials for analysis. The expenditure of energy concerning the agricultural part was made by the energy consumption of stage production of one hectare of sugar cane, cassava and corn, tillage and planting procedure, inputs, driving the crop, harvest, transport industry and energy draining. The expenditure of energy referring to the part was made by the industry energy consumption of stage processing of one tonne of sugar cane, cassava and corn, in the operations of disintegration / milling, hydrolysis / treatment of the broth, fermentation, distillation and maintenance of equipment. Under the system of agronomic production of raw materials, manioc presented an energy expenditure below that of sugar cane and maize (9,528.33 MJ ha-1; 14,370.90 MJ ha-1 and 15,633.83 MJ ha-1, respectively). For the ethanol produced, the operations of cultivation has consumed 1.54 MJ l-1 with manioc; MJ 1.99 l-1 with sugar cane, and 7.9 MJ l-1 with the corn. In the industrial processing of a ton of raw material, sugar cane presented an energy cost less than the cassava and maize (1,641.56 MJ t-1; 2,208.28 MJ t-1 and MJ 3,882.39 t-1, Respectively), however, showed a higher cost than when they related to ethanol produced (19.38 MJ l-1; 11.76 MJ l-1 and 11.76 MJ l-1, respectively). In the final energy balance for each megajoules of energy invested in sugar cane were required 1.09 MJ (9%), for each megajoules of energy invested in manioc were required 1.76 MJ (76%) and for each megajoules energy invested in maize were required 1.19 MJ (19%). Overall, it appears that the manioc consumes less energy than sugar cane and corn crops in the process of agribusiness obtaining ethanol.
