We propose a method to obtain a single centered correlation with use of a joint transform correlator. We analyze the required setup to carry out the whole process optically, and we also present experimental results.

Amorphous thin films of Fe/Sm, prepared by evaporation methods, have been magnetically characterized and the results were interpreted in terms of the random magnets theory. The samples behave as 2D and 3D random magnets depending on the total thickness of the film. From our data the existence of orientational order, which greatly influences the magnetic behavior of the films, is also clear.

We report on the growth of thin films and heterostructures of the ferromagnetic-insulating perovskite La0.1Bi0.9MnO3. We show that the La0.1Bi0.9MnO3 perovskite grows single phased, epitaxially, and with a single out-of-plane orientation either on SrTiO3 substrates or onto strained La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 and SrRuO3 ferromagnetic-metallic buffer layers. We discuss the magnetic properties of the La0.1Bi0.9MnO3 films and heterostructures in view of their possible potential as magnetoelectric or spin-dependent tunneling devices.

In the previous Comment, Forker and co-workers claim that perturbed angular correlation (PAC) data leave no alternative to the conclusion that the spontaneous magnetization of PrCo2 and NdCo2 undergoes a discontinuous, first-order phase transition at TC. We show here that their claim is in clear contradiction with a wealth of experimental evidence, including our own. Finally, we propose a possible origin for the disagreement between their interpretation of the PAC results and the literature on this subject.

The magnetic structure of the edge-sharing cuprate compound Li2CuO2 has been investigated with highly correlated ab initio electronic structure calculations. The first- and second-neighbor in-chain magnetic interactions are calculated to be 142 and -22 K, respectively. The ratio between the two parameters is smaller than suggested previously in the literature. The interchain interactions are antiferromagnetic in nature and of the order of a few K only. Monte Carlo simulations using the ab initio parameters to define the spin model Hamiltonian result in a Nel temperature in good agreement with experiment. Spin population analysis situates the magnetic moment on the copper and oxygen ions between the completely localized picture derived from experiment and the more delocalized picture based on local-density calculations.

Several ribbons of composition Fe73.5Cu1Nb 3Si16.5B6 and Fe73.5Cu1 Nb3Si13.5B9 were prepared by annealing the as-quenched samples between 525°C and 700°C; which induced nucleation of nanocrystallites of Fe bcc-type composition. Mean grain sizes were obtained from X-ray diffraction. Static magnetic properties were measured with both a Magnet Physik Hysteresis-Graph (up to 200 Oe) and a SHE SQUID magnetometer (up to 50 kOe). Soft magnetic parameters (coercive field and initial permeability) were very sensitive to grain size. The ZFC magnetization at low field showed a broad peak at a temperature TM, thus signalling a certain distribution of nanocrystalline sizes, and TM strongly decreased when the mean grain size decreased. Isothermal magnetization curves at low temperature showed the expected asymptotic behavior of a random magnet material at low and high fields.

Co-Ti-Sn-Ge substituted M-type bariumhexaferrite powders with mean grain sizes between about 10 nm and about 1 ¿m and a narrow size distribution were prepared reproducibly by means of a modified glass crystallization method. At annealing temperatures between 560 and 580°C of the amorphous flakes nanocrystalline particles grow. They behave superparamagnetically at room temperature and change into stable magnetic single domains at lower temperatures. The magnetic volume of the powders is considerably less than the geometric one. However, the effective anisotropy fields are larger by a Factor of two to three.

To understand the origin of the dynamical transition, between high-temperature exponential relaxation and low-temperature nonexponential relaxation, that occurs well above the static transition in glassy systems, a frustrated spin model, with and without disorder, is considered. The model has two phase transitions, the lower being a standard spin glass transition (in the presence of disorder) or fully frustrated Ising (in the absence of disorder), and the higher being a Potts transition. Monte Carlo results clarify that in the model with (or without) disorder the precursor phenomena are related to the Griffiths (or Potts) transition. The Griffiths transition is a vanishing transition which occurs above the Potts transition and is present only when disorder is present, while the Potts transition which signals the effect due to frustration is always present. These results suggest that precursor phenomena in frustrated systems are due either to disorder and/or to frustration, giving a consistent interpretation also for the limiting cases of Ising spin glass and of Ising fully frustrated model, where also the Potts transition is vanishing. This interpretation could play a relevant role in glassy systems beyond the spin systems case.

The recent observation of steps at regular intervals of magnetic field in the hysteresis loops of oriented crystals of the spin-10 molecular magnet Mn12O12(CH3COO)16(H2O)4 has been attributed to resonant tunneling between spin states. Here, we investigate the effect on the relaxation rate of applying the magnetic field at an angle with respect to the easy axis of magnetization. We find that the position of the resonances is independent of the transverse component of the field, and is determined solely by the longitudinal component. On the other hand, a transverse field significantly increases the relaxation rate, both on and off resonance. We discuss classical and quantum mechanical interpretations of this effect
