The salivary glands of Drosophila saltans ( saltans group, saltans subgroup) analyzed in an advanced stage of programmed cell death showed the appearance of a single, round, nucleolar corpuscle inside the highly altered nucleus of every gland cell, at a time during which the integrity of the original nucleolus was already lost and the original nucleolar material apparently disappeared. In the same nuclei, which already had also lost the characteristic chromosome structure, some delicate chromosome threads were maintained. In many cells, the new nucleolar corpuscle and these chromosome threads are associated. These findings are novel. However, the hypothesis put forward concerning their meaning remains dependent on other studies.

Steers (379 +/- 10 kg) with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas were used in a 5 x 5 Latin square digestion trial to quantify and evaluate the relationship between intestinal protein supply and intestinal starch disappearance. Treatments were infusions of 0, 50, 100, 150, or 200 g/d of casein along with 1,042 g/d of raw cornstarch. Abomasal infusions were accomplished by passing tubing and a pliable retaining washer through the reticular-omasal orifice into the abomasum. Steers were fed a 93% corn silage, 7% supplement diet that contained 12% crude protein at 1.65% body weight in 12 equal portions/d. Periods lasted 17 d (12 d for adaptation, 2 d of collections, and 3 d of rest). The quantity and percentage of organic matter and protein disappearance from the small intestine increased linearly (P < 0.03) with infused casein. Greater quantities of starch disappeared with increased casein infusion (P < 0.01). The infusion of 200 g/d of casein increased small intestinal starch disappearance by 226 g/d over the control. Casein infusion did not affect the quantity or percent of organic matter, starch, or protein disappearance in the large intestine. Treatments did not change ruminal ammonia N, ruminal pH, or plasma glucose concentrations. Starch disappearance from the small intestine was increased with greater protein flow to the duodenum of steers.

There are three, not two, sibling antthrushes of the genus Chamaeza (Formicariidae) in eastern Brazil. One is the short-tailed, large, pale-billed, lower montane C. campanisona, with a spotted throat, dark forehead, and a long song ending in several grunts. The second is the long-tailed, small, dark-billed, montane and southern C. ruficauda, with barred undertail coverts and a short upscale song. The third is medium-tailed, small, dark-billed, midmontane, with a long upscale song like that of midmontane so-called ruficauda in Colombia and Venezuela. This northern group is like the third Brazilian species in proportions but not in coloration, so is considered to be the separate species C. turdia. The third Brazilian bird is probably C. meruloides Vigors 1825, based on an 1826 color plate; type specimens were sold at auction and have disappeared. It has a reddish crown and olive-brown back as in C. campanisona but reddish forehead and tail as in C. ruficauda; the throat is unspotted but the rest of the underparts are as in C. campanisona. C. meruloides and C. turdina form a vocally similar superspecies.

In five male cirrhotic patients (Child A) and in four age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects, whole-body protein turnover was measured using a single oral dose of N-15-glycine as a tracer and urinary ammonia as end product. Subjects were studied in the fasting and feeding state, with different levels of protein and energy intake. The patients were underweight and presented lower plasma transthyretin and retinol-binding protein levels. When compared with controls, the kinetic studies showed patients to be hypometabolic in the fasting (Do) state and with the control diet [D-1 = (0.85 g of protein/154 kJ). kg(-1). day(-1)]. However, when corrected by body weight, the kinetic differences between groups disappeared, whereas the N-retention in the feeding state showed better results for the patients due mainly to their efficient breakdown decrease. When fed high-level protein or energy diets [D-2 = (0.9 g protein/195 kJ) and D-3 = (1.56 g protein/158 kJ). kg(-1). day(-1)], the patients showed D-0 = D-1 = D-2 < D-3 for N-flux and (D-0 = D-1) < D-3 (D-2 is intermediary) for protein synthesis. Thus, the present data suggest that the remaining mass of the undernourished mild cirrhotic patients has fairly good protein synthesis activity and also that protein, rather than energy intake, would be the limiting factor for increasing their whole-body protein synthesis.

Pechini's method was used to prepare lead titanate zirconate with Zr/Ti ratio equal to 53/47. X-ray diffraction data revealed the presence of a rhombohedral phase, rich in zirconium, due to difference in carbonate stabilities, in PZT ceramics calcined at 600 degrees C. Infrared spectroscopy presented COO- bonds in the 1400 cm(-1) region, which disappeared after calcining at 700 degrees C. Seeds with rhombohedral (PZT 57/43) or tetragonal structure (PZT 45/55) were added to the precursor. The microstructure was differentially influenced by the nature of seed particles. Rhombohedral nuclei promoted preferential crystallization of lead zirconate. This heterogeneity directly reflected on values of k(p) and d(33). (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. Limited and Techna S.r.l. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that hypertrophied cardiac muscle is more sensitive to volume-overload than normal cardiac muscle. We assessed the mechanical function of isolated left ventricular papillary muscle from male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and age-matched normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) Submitted to volume overload caused by aortocaval fistula (ACF) for 30 days. Muscles were perfused with Krebs-Henseleit solution at 28degreesC and Studied isometrically at a Stimulation rate of 0.2 Hz. The ACF increased the right and left ventricular weight-to-body weight ratio in WKY rats; it also promoted right ventricular hypertrophy and further increased the basal hypertrophy in the left ventricle from SHR. The arterial systolic pressure was greater in SHR than in WKY rats, and decreased with ACF in both groups. Developed tension (DT) and maximum rate of DT (+dT/dt) were greater in the SHR-control than in the WKY-control (P<0.05); the time from peak tension to 50% relaxation (RT1/2) was similar in these animals. ACE did not change any parameters ill the SHR group and increased the resting tension in the WKY group. However, the significant difference observed between myocardial contraction performance in WKY-controls and SHR-controls disappeared when the SHR-ACF and WKY-controls were compared. Furthermore, RT1/2 increased significantly ill the SHR-ACF in relation to the WKY-controls. In conclusion, the data lead LIS to infer that volume-overload for 30 days promotes more mechanical functional changes in hypertrophied muscle than in normal cardiac muscle.

In this work, spinels with the general formula Zn2-xCoxTiO4 were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method and thermally treated at 1,000 A degrees C. The powder precursors were characterized by TG/DTA. A decrease in the DTA peak temperature with the amount of zinc was observed. After the thermal treatment, the characterizations were performed by XRD, IR, colorimetry and UV/VIS spectroscopy. The XRD patterns of all the samples showed the presence of the spinel phase. Infrared spectroscopy showed the presence of ester complexes for Zn2TiO4 after thermal treatment at 500 A degrees C, which disappeared after cobalt addition, indicating that organic material elimination was favored.

Carbachol injected into the locus coeruleus (LC) induced a dose-dependent natriuresis in the rat. This natriuresis was maintained above control levels during the 120 min of urine sampling. Seizures and arterial blood pressure increase were also observed but they disappeared within 20 min after carbachol injection. Natriuresis was not obtained with either injections of carbachol outside the LC or with hypertonic solutions injected into the LC. Injection of atropine into the LC blocked the natriuresis induced by carbachol. In summary, our data show that carbachol induces natriuresis by an action on muscarinic receptors located in the LC region. © 1990.

The three larval stages of Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus) have been evaluated for their immunogenicity by ELISA and immunodiffusion (ID) using sera from experimentally infested rabbits. During a primary infestation, first instar D. hominis were found to cause most reaction and allowed the earliest diagnosis by ELISA. An inhibition of the antibody response against second and third instars was observed. The inhibition disappeared after departure of the larvae from the host. In experimentally immunized hosts the antibody response, following challenge, was highest against second and third instar antigens. Antibody remained elevated during the infestation but fell immediately after the larvae had left the host.

The persistence of three pesticides (fenitrothion, dimethoate, and ziram) in apricots in field conditions and their fate during the drying process were studied. After the treatments, the pesticides showed fast decay rates with pseudo-first-order kinetics and half-lives ranging from 6.9 to 9.9 days. The drying process showed a different effect on residue concentrations in dried apricots: omethoate (metabolite of dimethoate) and ziram residues had almost doubled, while fenitrothion disappeared and dimethoate remained constant.

An experiment was carried out to investigate the biology of Salmonella Pullorum in two varieties of laying hens, from 5 days of age up to 9 months. One variety was resistant to systemic salmonellosis (light layers producing white eggs) and the other was considered susceptible (brown layers producing brown eggs). The brown birds were more affected by the infection, showing signs of clinical disease in the first month of life. Later, these signs disappeared, but postmortem examination revealed persistent gross pathological changes in the liver, spleen, heart and ovary. The rapid agglutination test detected reactors throughout the experiment, with the strongest agglutination from 1 to 7 months post-infection. S. Pullorum was isolated from some of the organs and the eggs laid throughout the experiment. The relationship between white birds and S. Pullorum was less intense, and there were no noticeable signs of disease. There were few gross pathological changes, and the bacteria were isolated infrequently and only for a brief period after infection, although contaminated eggs were laid by these birds. The strongest serological response in the white chickens occurred between the second and the fifth month post-infection.

In uplands and lowlands of Santa Teresa, central Espírito Santo State, Brazil, 405 bird species were confirmed by field, museum, and literature studies. Of these, 16 seem to have disappeared, while 67 other species seem to have been lost from the lowlands (where no large biological reserves exist). Due to a suggestion that human areas add species to beta-diversity, we verified that up to 79 species now present have perhaps invaded with human activity (and 10 others are likely to invade), a total similar to that for lost species. However, lost species are often rare and invading species often widespread, resulting in exchange of Picassos for Coca-Cola bottles. Furthermore, gains exceed losses only when large biological reserves are present, as in the uplands (Nova Lombardia, Santa Lucia Reserves, each with over 250 species). Small or irregular reserves usually lose well over half their species, and these are only partly replaced by the invaders, resulting in net losses of up to half the local avifaunas. If one lists only 31 probable invaders, rather than a possible 79, things are even worse; net losses occur even in the entire township and near reserves, reaching over 200 species around lowland private reserves. Future productive development of human areas can eliminate or maltreat many invading species, too. While approving taxes on improductive use of land, as it leaves other areas free, we suggest that many current local uses, such as for coffee, are luxury production and could, be taxed.

Exercise training is often recommended in prevention and treatment of obesity. The present study was designed to compare the effects of intermittent and continuous exercise on weight loss and carcass composition in obese rats. Obese male Wistar rats (monosodium glutamate [MSG] administration, 4 mg/g of body weight every other day from birth to 14 days old) were used. After drug administration, the rats were separated into three groups: MSG-SED (sedentary), MSG-CONT (continuous, swimming, 45 min/day, 5 days/week, with and overload of 5% body weight for 12 weeks) and MSG-INT (intermittent, 15s swimming intermitted by 15s rest, during 45 min, 5 days/week, with and overload of 15% body weight for 12 weeks). Rats of the same age and strain, administered with saline were used as control (SAL), and subdivided into three groups: SAL-SED, SAL-CONT and SAL-INT. The animals were evaluated at the 10 weeks of training and 8 weeks of its interruption. MSG rats showed higher carcass fat as well as weight and cell size in epididymal adipose tissue than SAL rats, indicting the efficacy of the drug in producing obesity. Intermittent training protocol led to a reduction in blood lactate accumulation during acute exercise and both protocols reduced body weight gain during the experiment in MSG rats. After 8 weeks of training interruption no differences were observed among groups in the examined parameters. Only intermittent exercise training improved aerobic fitness but both protocols were similarly efficient in determining weight loss. However, the effects were transitory, since they disappeared after detraining.
