Parrots are the most threatened group of birds in the world, mainly because of the reduction and fragmentation of their natural habitats. However, few studies have investigated the dynamics of parrot populations in disturbed landscapes on a broad scale. In this paper, we studied the ecological interactions of the vulnerable blue-winged macaw (Primolius maracana) in a fragmented landscape surrounding a large protected park in southeastern Brazil. We sampled 36 forest fragments that varied in size, characteristics, degree of isolation and type of surrounding matrix in order to assess the importance of habitat features on the maintenance of these birds. Blue-winged macaws were recorded in 70% of the satellite remnants that were sampled, which included large and small blocks of forest. These areas were used as sites for feeding, nesting or overnight rests, and also provided connectivity for birds' displacements. However, the frequency of macaw visits varied among the remnants, and this was related to habitat features such as patch size, human use of surrounding land, and the proximity to the protected park, to urban areas and to the birds' roosting areas. In general, landscape-scale parameters explained more of the variation in the frequency of visits by macaws than did patch-scale parameters. These results demonstrate the importance of landscape mosaics for the survival of blue-winged macaws.

Segundo a literatura, Tersina viridis (Illiger, 1911) possui hábito gregário sazonal em deslocamentos locais. Os reais motivos desses deslocamentos ainda são poucos conhecidos. em reflorestamento de mata ciliar do rio Mogi-Guaçu, SP, foi possível quantificar a variação sazonal mensal na densidade populacional durante um ano. O número de indivíduos aumentou substancialmente durante a estação seca e ausência durante a estação chuvosa, assim, caracterizando um comportamento fortemente sazonal de ocorrência nesse local. Provavelmente T. viridis possui algumas rotas de deslocamentos quando aparecem em grandes agregados no período mais seco na região do interior do estado de São Paulo e vizinhanças. A grande abundância de algumas espécies de plantas ornitocóricas pode ser alguns dos motivos que determinam a rota desses deslocamentos na região estudada, e não o padrão geral da fenologia da frutificação das espécies ornitocóricas.

OBJETIVOS: Comparar parâmetros estabilométricos de mulheres idosas com ou sem histórico de quedas associadas ou não à osteoartrite (OA) de joelhos. MÉTODOS: Cinquenta e seis idosas apresentando ou não histórico de quedas (Q) e OA de joelho unilateral e bilateral foram distribuídas da seguinte maneira: grupo QOA (n = 10), idosas com histórico de queda e OA de joelho; grupo QSOA (n = 11), idosas com histórico de queda e sem OA de joelho; grupo SQOA (n = 14), idosas sem histórico de quedas (SQ) e com OA de joelho; e grupo SQSOA (n = 21), idosas sem histórico de quedas e sem OA de joelho. Para análise do equilíbrio semiestático usando uma plataforma de força, foram avaliados os deslocamentos anteroposterior (DAP) e mediolateral (DML), as velocidades de oscilação anteroposterior (VAP) e mediolateral (VML) em quatro situações na postura ereta. As situações avaliadas foram as seguintes: 1) PFOA: sobre superfície fixa e olhos abertos; 2) PFOF: sobre superfície fixa e olhos fechados; 3) PIOA: sobre superfície instável e olhos abertos; 4) PIOF: sobre superfície instável e os olhos fechados. RESULTADOS: As idosas com OA de joelho apresentaram maior DAP em todas as situações analisadas (P < 0,05), ao passo que idosas com histórico de quedas apresentaram maior DML (P < 0,05). Não houve diferenças entre os grupos para VAP e VML (P > 0,05). CONCLUSÕES: A OA de joelho, por si, é um fator prejudicial no aumento de oscilação do centro de pressão (COP) na direção anteroposterior, enquanto o histórico de quedas, independente da presença de OA de joelhos, traz prejuízos ao controle postural na direção mediolateral.

Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) is used to characterize the nanoscale electromechanical properties of centrosymmetric CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics with giant dielectric constant. Clear PFM contrast both in vertical (out-of-plane) and lateral (in-plane) modes is observed on the ceramic surface with varying magnitude and polarization direction depending on the grain crystalline orientation. Lateral signal changes its sign upon 180 degrees rotation of the sample thus ruling out spurious electrostatic contribution and confirming piezoelectric nature of the effect. Piezoresponse could be locally reversed by suitable electrical bias (local poling) and induced polarization was quite stable showing long-time relaxation (similar to 3 hrs). The electromechanical contrast in unpoled ceramics is attributed to the surface flexoelectric effect (strain gradient induced polarization) while piezoresponse hysteresis and ferroelectric-like behavior are discussed in terms of structural instabilities due to Ti off-center displacements and structural defects in this material. Neste trabalho abordamos a questão concernente à origem do princípio de trabalho virtual e sua consolidação como um dos conceitos fundamentais no estudo da mecânica analítica e, em particular, dos sistemas em equilíbrio estático. Ênfase foi dada às contribuições seminais de Stevin, Galileu e, sobretudo, as de d'Alembert e Lagrange, no tocante ao conceito de trabalho virtual. Além disso, faz-se um comentário geral sobre vínculos holônomos e deslocamento virtual. Alguns exemplos de emprego da equação de d'Alembert-Lagrange são apresentados, para mostrar como o princípio de trabalho virtual pode ser adequadamente aplicado.

This study pertains to a random sample of untreated French-Canadian adolescents (79 females and 107 males) evaluated at 10 and again at 15 years of age. Superimpositions on natural reference structures were performed to describe condylar growth and modelling of 11 mandibular landmarks. Superimpositions on natural cranial/cranial base reference structures were performed to describe mandibular displacement and true rotation.The results showed significant superior and posterior growth/modelling of the condyle and ramus. Males underwent significantly (P < 0.01) greater condylar growth and ramus modelling than females. With the exception of point B, which showed significant superior drift, modelling changes for the corpus landmarks were small and variable. The mandible rotated forward 2-3.3 degrees and was displaced 9.6-12.7 mm inferiorly and 1.9-2.7 mm anteriorly. Individual differences in ramus growth and modelling, both amount and direction, can be explained by mandibular rotation and displacements. Multivariate assessments revealed that superior condylar growth and ramus modelling were most closely associated with forward rotation and inferior mandibular displacement. Posterior growth and modelling were most closely correlated with anterior mandibular displacement and forward rotation. Modelling of the lower anterior border was independent of rotation and displacement.

In this paper we report an experimental and theoretical study based on a periodic density functional investigation into selected compositions of Pb1-xCaxTiO3 (x=0.0, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75). Based on our findings, we propose that the pseudocubic structure of these perovskites presents a long-range tendency for cubic symmetry, while the short-range displacements bring the solid solution to a tetragonal symmetry. The results are discussed in terms of x-ray diffraction, structural optimized parameters, Raman spectroscopy, band structure, density of states, Mulliken charge, and overlap population.

The need for standardization of the measured blow count number N-spt into a normalized reference energy value is now fully recognized. The present paper extends the existing theoretical approach using the wave propagation theory as framework and introduces an analysis for large displacements enabling the influence of rod length in the measured N-spt values to be quantified. The study is based on both calibration chamber and field tests. Energy measurements are monitored in two different positions: below the anvil and above the sampler. Both experimental and numerical results demonstrate that whereas the energy delivered into the rod stem is expressed as a ratio of the theoretical free-fall energy of the hammer, the effective sampler energy is a function of the hammer height of fall, sampler permanent penetration, and weight of both hammer and rods. Influence of rod length is twofold and produces opposite effects: wave energy losses increase with increasing rod length and in a long rod composition the gain in potential energy from rod weight is significant and may partially compensate measured energy losses. Based on this revised approach, an analytical solution is proposed to calculate the energy delivered to the sampler and efficiency coefficients are suggested to account for energy losses during the energy transference process.

In this work, the plate bending formulation of the boundary element method (BEM), based on the Reissner's hypothesis, is extended to the analysis of plates reinforced by rectangular beams. This composed structure is modelled by a zoned plate, being the beams represented by narrow sub-regions with larger thickness. The integral equations are derived by applying the weighted residual method to each sub-region, and summing them to get the equation for the whole plate. Equilibrium and compatibility conditions are automatically imposed by the integral equations, which treat this composed structure as a single body. In order to decrease the number of degrees of freedom, some approximations are considered for both displacements and tractions along the beam width. The accuracy of the proposed model is illustrated by simple examples whose exact solution are known as well as by more complex examples whose numerical results are compared with a well-known finite element code.

The Araguaia-Tocantins geosuture, which separates the Araguaia Fold Belt (AFB) from the Archean Amazonian Craton, was active in the late Middle Proterozoic. The Baixo Araguaia Supergroup was deposited, consisting of the Estrondo Group (lower quartzites with intercalated schists), Xambioá Formation (schists), and Canto da Vazante Formation (upper feldspathic schists); and the Tocantins Group consisting of the Couto Magalhaës Formation (phyllites, quartzites, slates, limestones, and metacherts) and Pequizeiro Formation (upper chlorite schists); and associated mafic-ultramafic bodies. The deformational history includes four regional phases of deformation within this supracrustal sequence: recumbent folds with vergence to the west; refolding with a N-S trend; an intense crenulation episode; and late thrusting from east to west. Metamorphism is of intermediate or intermediate-high pressure type with garnet, biotite, chlorite, and sericite isograds succeeded by a slightly or non-metamorphosed zone, from east to west. Rocks surrounding sparse gneissic-cored domes contain isograds of staurolite, kyanite, and fibrolite. These isograds are believed to be associated with the 1100 Ma Uruaçuano event. The Brasiliano Orogeny strongly affected the AFB with displacements due to transcurrent reactivation of great and old faults of the basement, slight folding in the supracrustal sequence, intrusion of small granite bodies, and development of domes with associated normal faults. The area underlain by the Estrondo Group was uplifted at this time, causing the deposition of the Rio das Barreiras polymictic conglomerate of the central area. K-Ar and Rb-Sr analyses date this thermo-tectonic event at 550 ± 100 Ma. The Archean basement is exposed in the cores of domes as a granite-gneiss association, the Colméia complex, which shows thermo-tectonic features that may be interpreted as polycyclic imprints (Jequié, Transamazonian?, Uruaçuano, and Brasiliano Events). © 1989.

The dispersion relations along the principal symmetry directions in BCC lithium-sodium alloys are calculated using second-order perturbation theory. The local modified Hoshino-Youngmodel potential was used for the lithium and the local Harrison model potential for sodium. The phonon density of states, the root mean square displacements and (Θ-T) curves are also calculated. In the absence of experimental data, just the theoretical predictions are presented here.
