Processing maps for hot working of as-cast and wrought stainless steels of type AISI 304 have been developed in the temperature range 600 to 1250°C and strain rate range 0.001 to 100 s−1. The domain of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in as-cast material occurs at higher temperatures (1250°C) and lower strain rates (0.001 s−1) than in the wrought steel (1100°C and 0.01 s−1). The effect is explained in terms of enhanced nucleation rate of DRX due to the carbide, ferrite particles, stable oxides/nitrides and second-phase intermetallics in the as-cast microstructure. The DRX domain is wider in the wrought material although the peak efficiency is less (32%) than in the as-cast case (40%). The flow instability regime is not significantly affected by the initial microstructure

Raman investigations of C70 films in the 14-370-K range show significant changes across the orientational phase transitions around 270 and 330 K. Seven of the Raman modes of C70 soften smoothly across the transitions, the magnitude of the decrease in frequencies being in the range of 2-5 cm-1. Linewidths of the bands increase in the transition region over and above the anharmonic contributions.

Ground-state properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with point-defect disorder are investigated numerically in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The phase diagram in the p(point defect concentration)-delta(deviation from half filling) plane exhibits antiferromagnetic, spin-density-wave, paramagnetic, and spin-glass-like phases. The disorder stabilizes the antiferromagnetic phase relative to the spin-density-wave phase. The presence of U strongly enhances the localization in the antiferromagnetic phase. The spin-density-wave and spin-glass-like phases are weakly localized.

A geometrically polar granular rod confined in 2D geometry, subjected to a sinusoidal vertical oscillation, undergoes noisy self-propulsion in a direction determined by its polarity. When surrounded by a medium of crystalline spherical beads, it displays substantial negative fluctuations in its velocity. We find that the large-deviation function (LDF) for the normalized velocity is strongly non-Gaussian with a kink at zero velocity, and that the antisymmetric part of the LDF is linear, resembling the fluctuation relation known for entropy production, even when the velocity distribution is clearly non-Gaussian. We extract an analogue of the phase-space contraction rate and find that it compares well with an independent estimate based on the persistence of forward and reverse velocities.

Zirconia-based solid electrolytes with zircon (ZrSiO4) as the auxiliary electrode have been suggested of sensing silicon concentrations in iron and steel melts. A knowledge of phase relations in the ternary system MO-SiO2-ZrO2 (M = Ca, Mg) is useful for selecting an appropriate auxiliary electrode. In this investigation, an isothermal section for the phase diagram of the system CaO-SiO2ZrO2 at 1573 K has been established by equilibrating mixtures of component oxides in air, followed by quenching and phase identification by optical miroscopy, energy disperse analysis of X-rays (EDAX) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The equilibrium phase relations have also been confirmed by computation using the available thermodynamic data on condensed phases in the system. The results indicate that zircon is not in thermodynamic equilibrium with calcia-stabilized zirconia or calcium zirconate. The silica containing phase in equilibrium with stabilized zirconia is Ca3ZrSi2O9. Calcium zirconate can coexist with Ca3ZrSi2O9 and Ca2SiO4.

We study the generation of coherent optical phonons in spin-frustrated pyrochlore single crystals Dy2Ti2O7, Gd2Ti2O7, and Tb2Ti2O7 using femtosecond laser pulses (65 fs, 1.57 eV) in degenerate time-resolved transmission experiments as a function of temperature from 4 to 296 K. At 4 K, two coherent phonons are observed at similar to 5.3 THz (5.0 THz) and similar to 9.3 THz (9.4 THz) for Dy2Ti2O7 (Gd2Ti2O7), whereas three coherent phonons are generated at similar to 5.0, 8.6, and 9.7 THz for Tb2Ti2O7. In the case of spin-ice Dy2Ti2O7, a clear discontinuity is observed in the linewidths of both the coherent phonons as well as in the phase of lower-energy coherent phonon mode, indicating a subtle structural change at 110 K. Another important observation is a phase difference of pi between the modes in all the samples, thus suggesting that the driving forces behind the generation of these modes could be different in nature, unlike a purely impulsive or displacive mechanism.

A new water soluble cationic imidazopyridine species, viz. (1E)-1-((pyridin-2-yl)methyleneamino)-3-(3(pyridin-2-yl) imidazo1,5-a]pyridin-2(3H)-yl)propan-2-ol (1), as a metal chelator is prepared as its PF6 salt and characterized. Compound 1 shows fluorescence at 438 nm on excitation at 342 nm in Tris-HCl buffer giving a fluorescence quantum yield (phi) of 0.105 and a life-time of 5.4 ns. Compound 1, as an avid DNA minor groove binder, shows pUC19 DNA cleavage activity in UV-A light of 365 nm forming singlet oxygen species in a type-II pathway. The photonuclease potential of 1 gets enhanced in the presence of Fe2+, Cu2+ or Zn2+. Compound 1 itself displays anticancer activity in HeLa, HepG2 and Jurkat cells with an enhancement on addition of the metal ions. Photodynamic effect of 1 at 365 nm also gets enhanced in the presence of Fe2+ and Zn2+. Fluorescence-based cell cycle analysis shows a significant dead cell population in the sub-G1 phase of the cell cycle suggesting apoptosis via ROS generation. A significant change in the nuclear morphology is observed from Hoechst 33258 and an acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual nuclear staining suggesting apoptosis in cells when treated with 1 alone or in the presence of the metal ions. Apoptosis is found to be caspase-dependent. Fluorescence imaging to monitor the distribution of 1 in cells shows that 1 in the presence of metal ions accumulates predominantly in the cytoplasm. Enhanced uptake of 1 into the cells within 12 h is observed in the presence of Fe2+ and Zn2+.

The pressure dependence of the Raman spectra of RbIO4 has been investigated up to 27.3 GPa at room temperature using the diamond-anvil cell. The changes in the Raman spectra show clearly two pressure-induced phase transitions at 5.3 GPa from scheelite to pseudoscheelite and at 7.2 GPa from pseudoscheelite to wolframite. There is an indication of a possible phase transition at 18.3 GPa from wolframite to a denser complex structure. These transitions follow the same sequence as in other compounds such as alkali perrehenates, which crystallize in the scheelite structure. The systematics in pressure-induced phase transitions in alkali periodates is discussed.

We present a comprehensive study of magnetoresistance (MR) of the crystalline pseudobinary ?-phase Fe alloy series FexNi80-xCr20 (50?x?66). This alloy series shows exotic magnetic phases as the composition (x) is varied. It has a critical composition for ferromagnetism at x=xc?5960. MR was measured in the temperature range 1.7110 K and up to a field of 7 T. The observed MR was small and the change was ?1%. The temperature dependence of MR was found to contain a positive and a negative contribution. The positive term was found to be ?H2 and it dominates at high field and high temperatures. We explain this as a manifestation of Kohlers rule. The negative MR was found to have a quadratic dependence on magnetization M. The magnitude of the negative MR reaches a maximum as x?xc.

Using a dynamic materials model, processing and instability maps have been developed for near-alpha titanium alloy 685 in the temperature range 775-1025 degrees C and strain-rate range of 0.001-10 s(-1) to optimise its hot workability. The alloy's beta-transus temperature lies at about 1020 degrees C. The material undergoes superplasticity with a peak efficiency of 80% at 975 degrees C and 0.001 s(-1), which are the optimum parameters for alpha-beta working. The occurrence of superplasticity is attributed to two-phase microduplex structure, higher strain-rate sensitivity, low flow stress and sigmoidal variation between log flow stress and log strain rate. The material also exhibits how localisation due to adiabatic shear-band formation up to its beta-transus temperature with strain rates greater than 0.02 s(-1) and thus cracking along these regions. The two-phase thermodynamic (2PT) model is used to determine the absolute entropy and energy of carbon dioxide over a wide range of conditions from molecular dynamics trajectories. The 2PT method determines the thermodynamic properties by applying the proper statistical mechanical partition function to the normal modes of a fluid. The vibrational density of state (DoS), obtained from the Fourier transform of the velocity autocorrelation function, converges quickly, allowing the free energy, entropy, and other thermodynamic properties to be determined from short 20-ps MD trajectories. The anharmonic effects in the vibrations are accounted for by the broadening of the normal modes into bands from sampling the velocities over the trajectory. The low frequency diffusive modes, which lead to finite DoS at zero frequency, are accounted for by considering the DoS as a superposition of gas-phase and solid-phase components (two phases). The analytical decomposition of the DoS allows for an evaluation of properties contributed by different types of molecular motions. We show that this 2PT analysis leads to accurate predictions of entropy and energy of CO2 over a wide range of conditions (from the triple point to the critical point of both the vapor and the liquid phases along the saturation line). This allows the equation of state of CO2 to be determined, which is limited only by the accuracy of the force field. We also validated that the 2PT entropy agrees with that determined from thermodynamic integration, but 2PT requires only a fraction of the time. A complication for CO2 is that its equilibrium configuration is linear, which would have only two rotational modes, but during the dynamics it is never exactly linear, so that there is a third mode from rotational about the axis. In this work, we show how to treat such linear molecules in the 2PT framework.

We study phase transitions in the colossal-magnetoresistive manganites by using a mean-field theory both at zero and non-zero temperatures. Our Hamiltonian includes double-exchange, superexchange, and Hubbard terms with on-site and nearest-neighbour Coulomb interaction, with the parameters estimated from earlier density-functional calculations. The phase diagrams show magnetic and charge-ordered (or charge-disordered) phases as a result of the competition between the double-exchange, superexchange, and Hubbard terms, the relative effects of which are sensitively dependent on parameters such as doping, bandwidth, and temperature. In accord with the experimental observations, several important features are reproduced from our model, namely, (i) a phase transition from an insulating, charge-ordered antiferromagnetic to a metallic, charge-disordered ferromagnetic state near dopant concentration x = 1/2, (ii) the reduction of the transition temperature TAF-->F by the application of a magnetic field, (iii) melting of the charge order by a magnetic field, and (iv) phase coexistence for certain values of temperature and doping. An important feature, not reproduced in our model, is the antiferromagnetism in the electron-doped systems, e.g., La1-xCaxMnO3 over the entire range of 0.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1, and we suggest that a multi-band model which includes the unoccupied t(2g) orbitals might be an important ingredient for describing this feature.

We study muon-spin rotation (mu SR) spectra in the mixed phase of highly anisotropic layered superconductors, specifically Bi2+xSr2-xCaCu2O8+delta (BSCCO), by modeling the fluid and solid phases of pancake Vortices using liquid-state and density functional methods. The role of thermal fluctuations in causing motional narrowing of mu SR line shapes is quantified in terms of a first-principles theory of the flux-lattice melting transition. The effects of random point pinning are investigated using a replica treatment of liquid-state correlations and a replicated density functional theory. Our results indicate that motional narrowing in the pure system, although substantial, cannot account for the remarkably small linewidths obtained experimentally at relatively high fields and low temperatures. We find that satisfactory agreement with the mu SR data for BSCCO in this regime can be obtained through the ansatz that this ''phase'' is characterized by frozen short-range positional correlations reflecting the structure of the liquid just above the melting transition. This proposal is consistent with recent suggestions of a ''pinned liquid'' or ''glassy'' state of pancake Vortices in the presence of pinning disorder. Our results for the high-temperature liquid phase indicate that measurable linewidths may be obtained in this phase as a consequence of density inhomogeneities induced by the pinning disorder. The results presented here comprise a unified, first-principles theoretical treatment of mu SR spectra in highly anisotropic layered superconductors in terms of a controlled set of approximations. Scattering of coherent light from scattering particles causes phase shift to the scattered light. The interference of unscattered and scattered light causes the formation of speckles. When the scattering particles, under the influence of an ultrasound (US) pressure wave, vibrate, the phase shift fluctuates, thereby causing fluctuation in speckle intensity. We use the laser speckle contrast analysis (LSCA) to reconstruct a map of the elastic property (Young's modulus) of soft tissue-mimicking phantom. The displacement of the scatters is inversely related to the Young's modulus of the medium. The elastic properties of soft biological tissues vary, many fold with malignancy. The experimental results show that laser speckle contrast (LSC) is very sensitive to the pathological changes in a soft tissue medium. The experiments are carried out on a phantom with two cylindrical inclusions of sizes 6 mm in diameter, separated by 8 mm between them. Three samples are made. One inclusion has Young's modulus E of 40 kPa. The second inclusion has either a Young's modulus E of 20 kPa, or scattering coefficient of mu'(s), = 3.00 mm(-1) or absorption coefficient of mu(a) = 0.03 mm(-1). The optical absorption (mu(a)), reduced scattering (mu'(s)) coefficient, and the Young's modulus of the background are mu(a) = 0.01 mm(-1), mu'(s) = 1.00 mm(-1) and 12kPa, respectively. The experiments are carried out on all three phantoms. On a phantom with two inclusions of Young's modulus of 20 and 40 kPa, the measured relative speckle image contrasts are 36.55% and 63.72%, respectively. Experiments are repeated on phantoms with inclusions of mu(a) = 0.03 mm-1, E = 40 kPa and mu'(s) = 3.00 mm(-1). The results show that it is possible to detect inclusions with contrasts in optical absorption, optical scattering, and Young's modulus. Studies of the variation of laser speckle contrast with ultrasound driving force for various values of mu(a), mu'(s), and Young's modulus of the tissue mimicking medium are also carried out. We report high-pressure Raman, infrared (IR), and optical-absorption spectra of alpha-ZrMo2O8 (trigonal) up to 38 GPa at room temperature. The spectroscopic studies are consistent with diffraction results that show that alpha-ZrMo2O8 transforms into delta-ZrMo2O8 (monoclinic) at about 1 GPa and the delta phase converts to the epsilon phase (trielinic) at about 2.0 GPa. Optical-absorption measurements give an estimate of the band gap of about 0.6 eV at the lowest pressure. Band-gap changes with pressure are confirmed with visual observations. ZrMo2O8 changes from transparent at 5 GPa to yellow at 10 GPa, red at 18 GPa, and at about 30 GPa it becomes opaque.
