[EN] This paper deals with the study of some new properties of the intrinsic order graph. The intrinsic order graph is the natural graphical representation of a complex stochastic Boolean system (CSBS). A CSBS is a system depending on an arbitrarily large number n of mutually independent random Boolean variables. The intrinsic order graph displays its 2n vertices (associated to the CSBS) from top to bottom, in decreasing order of their occurrence probabilities. New relations between the intrinsic ordering and the Hamming weight (i.e., the number of 1-bits in a binary n-tuple) are derived. The PhD thesis at hand consists of three parts and describes the petrogenetic evolution of Uralian-Alaskan-type mafic ultramafic complexes in the Ural Mountains, Russia. Uralian-Alaskan-type mafic-ultramafic complexes are recognized as a distinct class of intrusions. Characteristic petrologic features are the concentric zonation of a central dunite body grading outward into wehrlite, clinopyroxenite and gabbro, the absence of orthopyroxene and frequently occurring platinum group element (PGE) mineralization. In addition, the presence of ferric iron-rich spinel discriminates Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes from most other mafic ultramafic rock assemblages. The studied Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes (Nizhnii Tagil, Kytlym and Svetley Bor) belong to the southern part of a 900 km long, N–S-trending chain of similar intrusions between the Main Uralian Fault to the west and the Serov-Mauk Fault to the east. The first chapter of this thesis studies the evolution of the ultramafic rocks tracing the compositional variations of rock forming and accessory minerals. The comparison of the chemical composition of olivine, clinopyroxene and chromian spinel from the Urals with data from other localities indicates that they are unique intrusions having a characteristic spinel and clinopyroxene chemistry. Laser ablation-ICPMS (LA-ICPMS ) analyses of trace element concentrations in clinopyroxene are used to calculate the composition of their parental melt which is characterized by enriched LREE (0.5-5.2 prim. mantle) and other highly incompatible elements (U, Th, Ba, Rb) relative to the HREE (0.25-2.0 prim. mantle). A subduction-related geotectonic setting is indicated by a positive anomaly for Sr and negative anomalies for Ti, Zr and Hf. The mineral compositions monitor the evolution of the parental magmas and decipher differences between the studied complexes. In addition, the observed variation in LREE/HREE (for example La/Lu = 2-24) can be best explained with the model of an episodically replenished and erupted open magma chamber system with the extensive fractionation of olivine, spinel and clinopyroxene. The data also show that ankaramites in a subduction-related geotectonic setting could represent parental magmas of Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes. The second chapter of the thesis discusses the chemical variation of major and trace elements in rock-forming minerals of the mafic rocks. Electron microprobe and LA-ICPMS analyses are used to quantitatively describe the petrogenetic relationship between the different gabbroic lithologies and their genetic link to the ultramafic rocks. The composition of clinopyroxene identifies the presence of melts with different trace element abundances on the scale of a thin section and suggests the presence of open system crustal magma chambers. Even on a regional scale the large variation of trace element concentrations and ratios in clinopyroxene (e.g. La/Lu = 3-55) is best explained by the interaction of at least two fundamentally different magma types at various stages of fractionation. This requires the existence of a complex magma chamber system fed with multiple pulses of magmas from at least two different coeval sources in a subduction-related environment. One source produces silica saturated Island arc tholeiitic melts. The second source produces silica undersaturated, ultra-calcic, alkaline melts. Taken these data collectively, the mixing of the two different parental magmas is the dominant petrogenetic process explaining the observed chemical variations. The results further imply that this is an intrinsic feature of Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes and probably of many similar mafic-ultramafic complexes world-wide. In the third chapter of this thesis the major element composition of homogeneous and exsolved spinel is used as a petrogenetic indicator. Homogeneous chromian spinel in dunites and wehrlites monitors the fractionation during the early stages of the magma chamber and the onset of clinopyroxene fractionation as well as the reaction of spinel with interstitial liquid. Exsolved spinel is present in mafic and ultramafic rocks from all three studied complexes. Its composition lies along a solvus curve which defines an equilibrium temperature of 600°C, given that spinel coexists with olivine. This temperature is considered to be close to the temperature of the host rocks into which the studied Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes intruded. The similarity of the exsolution temperatures in the different complexes over a distance of several hundred kilometres implies a regional tectonic event that terminated the exsolution process. This event is potentially associated with the final exhumation of the Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes along the Main Uralian Fault and the Serov-Mauk Fault in the Uralian fold belt.

Complex networks analysis is a very popular topic in computer science. Unfortunately this networks, extracted from different contexts, are usually very large and the analysis may be very complicated: computation of metrics on these structures could be very complex. Among all metrics we analyse the extraction of subnetworks called communities: they are groups of nodes that probably play the same role within the whole structure. Communities extraction is an interesting operation in many different fields (biology, economics,...). In this work we present a parallel community detection algorithm that can operate on networks with huge number of nodes and edges. After an introduction to graph theory and high performance computing, we will explain our design strategies and our implementation. Then, we will show some performance evaluation made on a distributed memory architectures i.e. the supercomputer IBM-BlueGene/Q "Fermi" at the CINECA supercomputing center, Italy, and we will comment our results.

It is currently widely accepted that the understanding of complex cell functions depends on an integrated network theoretical approach and not on an isolated view of the different molecular agents. Aim of this thesis was the examination of topological properties that mirror known biological aspects by depicting the human protein network with methods from graph- and network theory. The presented network is a partial human interactome of 9222 proteins and 36324 interactions, consisting of single interactions reliably extracted from peer-reviewed scientific publications. In general, one can focus on intra- or intermodular characteristics, where a functional module is defined as "a discrete entity whose function is separable from those of other modules". It is found that the presented human network is also scale-free and hierarchically organised, as shown for yeast networks before. The interactome also exhibits proteins with high betweenness and low connectivity which are biologically analyzed and interpreted here as shuttling proteins between organelles (e.g. ER to Golgi, internal ER protein translocation, peroxisomal import, nuclear pores import/export) for the first time. As an optimisation for finding proteins that connect modules, a new method is developed here based on proteins located between highly clustered regions, rather than regarding highly connected regions. As a proof of principle, the Mediator complex is found in first place, the prime example for a connector complex. Focusing on intramodular aspects, the measurement of k-clique communities discriminates overlapping modules very well. Twenty of the largest identified modules are analysed in detail and annotated to known biological structures (e.g. proteasome, the NFκB-, TGF-β complex). Additionally, two large and highly interconnected modules for signal transducer and transcription factor proteins are revealed, separated by known shuttling proteins. These proteins yield also the highest number of redundant shortcuts (by calculating the skeleton), exhibit the highest numbers of interactions and might constitute highly interconnected but spatially separated rich-clubs either for signal transduction or for transcription factors. This design principle allows manifold regulatory events for signal transduction and enables a high diversity of transcription events in the nucleus by a limited set of proteins. Altogether, biological aspects are mirrored by pure topological features, leading to a new view and to new methods that assist the annotation of proteins to biological functions, structures and subcellular localisations. As the human protein network is one of the most complex networks at all, these results will be fruitful for other fields of network theory and will help understanding complex network functions in general.

Degraded hillsides in Northern Pakistan are rehabilitated through social forestry campaigns using fast growing exotic trees. These plantations on former scrublands curtail access by livestock owned by landless pastoralists and create social tension. This study proposes an alternative strategy of planting indigenous fodder trees and shrubs that are well-suited to the local socio-ecological characteristics and can benefit all social segments. The choice of fodder tree species, their nutritional value and distribution within the complex socio-ecological system is explained. This study also explores the suitability of these trees at different elevations, sites and transhumant routes. Providing mobile herders with adequate fodder trees could relax social tensions and complement food security.

This review deals with the complex sex determining system of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, governed by the interactions between a genetic determination and the influence of temperature, shown in both domestic and wild populations. Naturally sex reversed individuals are strongly suggested in two wild populations. This can be due to the masculinising temperatures which some fry encounter during their sex differentiation period when they colonise shallow waters, and/or to the influence of minor genetic factors. Differences regarding a) thermal responsiveness of sex ratios between and within Nile tilapia populations, b) maternal and paternal effects on temperature dependent sex ratios and c) nearly identical results in offspring of repeated matings, demonstrate that thermosensitivity is under genetic control. Selection experiments to increase the thermosensitivity revealed high responses in the high and low sensitive lines. The high-line showed ~ 90% males after 2 generations of selection whereas the weakly sensitive line had 54% males. This is the first evidence that a surplus of males in temperature treated groups can be selected as a quantitative trait. Expression profiles of several genes (Cyp19a, Foxl2, Amh, Sox9a,b) from the gonad and brain were analysed to define temperature action on the sex determining/differentiating cascade in tilapia. The coexistence of GSD and TSD is discussed.

We present and test a conceptual and methodological approach for interdisciplinary sustainability assessments of water governance systems based on what we call the sustainability wheel. The approach combines transparent identification of sustainability principles, their regional contextualization through sub-principles (indicators), and the scoring of these indicators through deliberative dialogue within an interdisciplinary team of researchers, taking into account their various qualitative and quantitative research results. The approach was applied to a sustainability assessment of a complex water governance system in the Swiss Alps. We conclude that the applied approach is advantageous for structuring complex and heterogeneous knowledge, gaining a holistic and comprehensive perspective on water sustainability, and communicating this perspective to stakeholders.

Interactions between Eph receptors and their membrane-bound ligands (ephrins) are of critical importance for key developmental processes such as boundary formation or vascular development. Their downstream signaling pathways are intricate and heterogeneous at several levels, the combined effect being a highly complex and flexible system. Here we demonstrate that activated EphB1 induces tyrosine phosphorylation of the focal adhesion protein paxillin at Tyr-31 and Tyr-118 and is recruited to paxillin-focal adhesion kinase (FAK) complexes. Pretreatment with the specific Src inhibitor PP2, or expression of dominant-negative, kinase-dead c-Src abrogates EphB1-induced tyrosine phosphorylation of paxillin. Cells transfected with the paxillin mutant Y31F/Y118F displayed a reduced migration in response to ephrin B2 stimulation. Furthermore, expression of an LD4 deletion mutant (paxillin DeltaLD4) significantly reduces EphB1-paxillin association, paxillin tyrosine phosphorylation, as well as EphB1-dependent cell migration. Finally, mutation of the Nck-binding site of EphB1 (Y594F) interrupts the interaction between Nck, paxillin, and EphB1. These data suggest a model in which ligand-activated EphB1 forms a signaling complex with Nck, paxillin, and focal adhesion kinase and induces tyrosine phosphorylation of paxillin in a c-Src-dependent manner to promote cell migration.

Targeted sampling on the Dolgovskoy Mound (northern Shatsky Ridge) revealed the presence of spectacular laterally extensive and differently shaped authigenic carbonates. The sampling stations were selected based on sidescan sonar and profiler images that show patchy backscatter and irregular and discontinuous reflections in the near subsurface. The interpretation of acoustic data from the top part of the mound supports the seafloor observations and the sampling that revealed the presence of a complex subsurface plumbing system characterized by carbonates and gas. The crusts sampled consist of carbonate cemented layered hemipelagic sedimentary Unit 1 associated with several centimetres thick microbial mats. Three different carbonate morphologies were observed: (a) tabular slabs, (b) subsurface cavernous carbonates consisting of void chambers up to 20 cm**3 in size and (c) chimney and tubular conduits vertically oriented or forming a subhorizontal network in the subsurface. The methanogenic origin of the carbonates is established based on visual observations of fluids seepage structures, 13C depletion of the carbonates (d13C varying between -36.7 per mil and -27.4 per mil), and by thin carbonate layers present within the thick microbial mats. Laboratory experiments with a Hele-Shaw cell were conducted in order to simulate the gas seepage through contrasting grain size media present on the seafloor. Combined petrography, visual observations and sandbox simulations allowed a characterization of the dynamics and the structures of the plumbing system in the near subsurface. Based on sample observations and the experiments, three observed morphologies of authigenic carbonates are interpreted, respectively, as (a) Darcian porous flow through the finely laminated clayey/coccolith-rich layers, (b) gas accumulation chambers at sites where significant fluid escape was impeded by thicker clayey layers forming the laminated Unit1 and (c) focussed vertical fluid venting and subhorizontal migration of overpressured fluids released from (b). The Hele-Shaw cell experiments represent a promising tool for investigating shallow fluid flow pathways in marine systems.

The Kerguelen Plateau and Broken Ridge in the southern Indian Ocean together represent one of the most voluminous large igneous provinces (LIPs) ever emplaced on Earth. A scientific objective of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 183 was to constrain the post-melting magma evolution of Kerguelen Plateau magmas. In an effort to better understand this evolution, isotopic and trace element analysis of individual plagioclase crystals hosted within two Kerguelen Plateau basalts recovered from Elan Bank were undertaken. Previous whole-rock studies established that the two host basalts investigated in this study are samples of crustally contaminated (lower group) and relatively uncontaminated (upper group) basalt. Plagioclase phenocrysts from the uncontaminated basalt are dominantly normal zoned and exhibit a 87Sr/86SrI range of 0.704845-0.704985, which overlaps uncontaminated group whole-rock values previously reported. Plagioclase crystals from the contaminated basalt are dominantly reverse zoned and exhibit a 87Sr/86SrI range of 0.705510-0.705735, which all lie within contaminated group whole-rock values previously reported. There are no systematic within crystal core to rim variations in 87Sr/86SrI from either group, with the exception that contaminated group crystal rims have overall less radiogenic 87Sr/86SrI than other zones. These observations indicate that crustal assimilation occurred before the formation of Unit 10 plagioclase phenocrysts, which is supported by parent magma trace element abundance data inverted using carefully calculated partition coefficients. Trace element diffusion modeling indicates that the upper group basalt (Unit 4) experienced a more vigorous eruptive flux than the lower group basalt (Unit 10). We suggest that plagioclase phenocrysts in both the upper and lower group basalts originated from the shallowest section of what was likely a complex magma chamber system. We contend that the magmatic system contained regions of extensive plagioclase-dominated crystal mush. Crustal assimilation was not a significant ongoing process in this portion of the Elan Bank magmatic system. Both basalts exhibit compelling evidence for remobilization and partial resorption of crystalline debris (e.g., reverse zoned crystals, glomerocrysts). We suggest Unit 4 and 10 magmas ascended different sections of the Elan Bank magma system, where the Unit 10 magmas ascended a section of the magma system that penetrated a stranded fragment of continental crust.

The surface water hydrography along the western Iberian margin, as part of the North Atlantic's eastern boundary upwelling system, consists of a complex, seasonally variable system of equatorward and poleward surface and subsurface currents and seasonal upwelling. Not much information exists to ascertain if the modern current and productivity patterns subsisted under glacial climate conditions, such as during marine isotope stage (MIS) 2, and how North Atlantic meltwater events, especially Heinrich events, affected them. To help answer these questions we are combining stable isotope records of surface to subsurface dwelling planktonic foraminifer species with sea surface temperature and export productivity data for four cores distributed along the western and southwestern Iberian margin (MD95-2040, MD95-2041, MD99-2336, and MD99-2339). The records reveals that with the exception of the Heinrich events and Greenland Stadial (GS) 4 hydrographic conditions along the western Iberian margin were not much different from the present. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), subtropical surface and subsurface waters penetrated poleward to at least 40.6°N (site MD95-2040). Export productivity was, in general, high on the western margin during the LGM and low in the central Gulf of Cadiz, in agreement with the modern situation. During the Heinrich events and GS 4, on the other hand, productivity was high in the Gulf of Cadiz and suppressed in the upwelling regions along the western margin where a strong halocline inhibited upwelling. Heinrich event 1 had the strongest impact on the hydrography and productivity off Iberia and was the only period when subarctic surface waters were recorded in the central Gulf of Cadiz. South of Lisbon (39°N), the impact of the other Heinrich events was diminished, and not all of them led to a significant cooling in the surface waters. Thus, climatic impacts of Heinrich events highly varied with latitude and the prevailing hydrographic conditions in this region.

The main objective of this article is to characterize the reverse logistics system for mobile phones in Spain. The study includes the characterization of the different actors involved in the reverse logistics system and the description of the most common logistics practices in the sector. We will also opose alternative practices for managing this complex reverse logistics system and finally, we analyse the challenges of the current reverse logistics model. Some alternatives for the current model are location of reception points for end-of-use mobiles, the need to legislate the secondhand mobile phone market, and the location of the necessary recycling centres according to current legislation.

Este informe trata el diseño, desarrollo y construcción de un aerodeslizador de pequeño tamaño, equipado con control remoto que permite al usuario actuar sobre la velocidad y dirección del mismo. Este proyecto podrá ser utilizado en un futuro como base para el desarrollo de aplicaciones más complejas. Un aerodeslizador es un medio de transporte cuyo chasis se eleva sobre el suelo por medio de un motor impulsor que hincha una falda colocada en la parte inferior del mismo. Además, uno o más motores se colocan en la parte trasera del vehículo para propulsarlo. El hecho de que el aerodeslizador no este en contacto directo con la tierra, hace que pueda moverse tanto por tierra como sobre el agua o hielo y que sea capaz de superar pequeños obstáculos. Por otra parte, este hecho se convierte a su vez en un problema debido a que su fuerza de rozamiento al desplazarse es muy pequeña, lo que provoca que sea muy difícil de frenar, y tienda a girar por sí mismo debido a la inercia del movimiento y a las fuerzas provocadas por las corrientes de aire debajo del chasis. Sin embargo, para este proyecto no se ha colocado una falda debajo del mismo, debido a que su diseño es bastante complicado, por lo tanto la fricción con el suelo es menor, aumentando los problemas detallados con anterioridad. El proyecto consta de dos partes, mando a distancia y aerodeslizador, que se conectan a través de antenas de radiofrecuencia (RF). El diseño y desarrollo de cada una ha sido realizado de manera separada exceptuando la parte de las comunicaciones entre ambas. El mando a distancia se divide en tres partes. La primera está compuesta por la interfaz de usuario y el circuito que genera las señales analógicas correspondientes a sus indicaciones. La interfaz de usuario la conforman tres potenciómetros: uno rotatorio y dos deslizantes. El rotatorio se utiliza para controlar la dirección de giro del aerodeslizador, mientras que cada uno de los deslizantes se emplea para controlar la fuerza del motor impulsor y del propulsor respectivamente. En los tres casos los potenciómetros se colocan en el circuito de manera que actúan como divisores de tensión controlables. La segunda parte se compone de un microcontrolador de la familia PSoC. Esta familia de microcontroladores se caracteriza por tener una gran adaptabilidad a la aplicación en la que se quieran utilizar debido a la posibilidad de elección de los periféricos, tanto analógicos como digitales, que forman parte del microcontrolador. Para el mando a distancia se configura con tres conversores A/D que se encargan de transformar las señales procedentes de los potenciómetros, tres amplificadores programables para trabajar con toda la escala de los conversores, un LCD que se utiliza para depurar el código en C con el que se programa y un módulo SPI que es la interfaz que conecta el microcontrolador con la antena. Además, se utilizan cuatro pines externos para elegir el canal de transmisión de la antena. La tercera parte es el módulo transceptor de radio frecuencia (RF) QFM-TRX1-24G, que en el mando a distancia funciona como transmisor. Éste utiliza codificación Manchester para asegurar bajas tasas de error. Como alimentación para los circuitos del mando a distancia se utilizan cuatro pilas AA de 1,5 voltios en serie. En el aerodeslizador se pueden distinguir cinco partes. La primera es el módulo de comunicaciones, que utiliza el mismo transceptor que en el mando a distancia, pero esta vez funciona como receptor y por lo tanto servirá como entrada de datos al sistema haciendo llegar las instrucciones del usuario. Este módulo se comunica con el siguiente, un microcontrolador de la familia PSoC, a través de una interfaz SPI. En este caso el microcontrolador se configura con: un modulo SPI, un LCD utilizado para depurar el código y tres módulos PWM (2 de 8 bits y uno de 16 bits) para controlar los motores y el servo del aerodeslizador. Además, se utilizan cuatro pines externos para seleccionar el canal de recepción de datos. La tercera y cuarta parte se pueden considerar conjuntamente. Ambas están compuestas por el mismo circuito electrónico basado en transistores MOSFET. A la puerta de cada uno de los transistores llega una señal PWM de 100 kilohercios que proviene del microcontrolador, que se encarga de controlar el modo de funcionamiento de los transistores, que llevan acoplado un disipador de calor para evitar que se quemen. A su vez, los transistores hacen funcionar al dos ventiladores, que actúan como motores, el impulsor y el propulsor del aerodeslizador. La quinta y última parte es un servo estándar para modelismo. El servo está controlado por una señal PWM, en la que la longitud del pulso positivo establece la posición de la cabeza del servo, girando en uno u otra dirección según las instrucciones enviadas desde el mando a distancia por el usuario. Para el aerodeslizador se han utilizado dos fuentes de alimentación diferentes: una compuesta por 4 pilas AA de 1,5 voltios en serie que alimentarán al microcontrolador y al servo, y 4 baterías de litio recargables de 3,2 voltios en serie que alimentan el circuito de los motores. La última parte del proyecto es el montaje y ensamblaje final de los dispositivos. Para el chasis del aerodeslizador se ha utilizado una cubierta rectangular de poli-estireno expandido, habitualmente encontrado en el embalaje de productos frágiles. Este material es bastante ligero y con una alta resistencia a los golpes, por lo que es ideal para el propósito del proyecto. En el chasis se han realizado dos agujeros: uno circular situado en el centro del mismo en el se introduce y se ajusta con pegamento el motor impulsor, y un agujero con la forma del servo, situado en uno del los laterales estrechos del rectángulo, en el que se acopla el mismo. El motor propulsor está adherido al cabezal giratorio del servo de manera que rota a la vez que él, haciendo girar al aerodeslizador. El resto de circuitos electrónicos y las baterías se fijan al chasis mediante cinta adhesiva y pegamento procurando en todo momento repartir el peso de manera homogénea por todo el chasis para aumentar la estabilidad del aerodeslizador. SUMMARY: In this final year project a remote controlled hovercraft was designed using mainly technology that is well known by students in the embedded systems programme. This platform could be used to develop further and more complex projects. The system was developed dividing the work into two parts: remote control and hovercraft. The hardware was of the hovercraft and the remote control was designed separately; however, the software was designed at the same time since it was needed to develop the communication system. The result of the project was a remote control hovercraft which has a user friendly interface. The system was designed based on microprocessor technologies and uses common remote control technologies. The system has been designed with technology commonly used by the students in Metropolia University so that it can be readily understood in order to develop other projects based on this platform.

Measuring skin temperature (TSK) provides important information about the complex thermal control system and could be interesting when carrying out studies about thermoregulation. The most common method to record TSK involves thermocouples at specific locations; however, the use of infrared thermal imaging (IRT) has increased. The two methods use different physical processes to measure TSK, and each has advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the mean skin temperature (MTSK) measurements using thermocouples and IRT in three different situations: pre-exercise, exercise and post-exercise. Analysis of the residual scores in Bland-Altman plots showed poor agreement between the MTSK obtained using thermocouples and those using IRT. The averaged error was -0.75 °C during pre-exercise, 1.22 °C during exercise and -1.16 °C during post-exercise, and the reliability between the methods was low in the pre- (ICC = 0.75 [0.12 to 0.93]), during (ICC = 0.49 [-0.80 to 0.85]) and post-exercise (ICC = 0.35 [-1.22 to 0.81] conditions. Thus, there is poor correlation between the values of MTSK measured by thermocouples and IRT pre-exercise, exercise and post-exercise, and low reliability between the two forms of measurement.
