"La projecció d'un ideal estètic durant el Noucentisme. Josep Aragay i Blanchar (1889-1973)" es el primer estudi integral dedicat a aquest artista i teòric del Noucentisme. La tesi analitza amb profunditat la trajectòria d’Aragay com a dibuixant, pintor, gravador i ceramista, però també com a poeta, professor i polític; a més del paper que va exercir com a crític, polemista i teòric de l’art. La tesi posa de manifest la labor artística i intel•lectual d’aquest personatge que va assumir, defensar i projectar, fins el final de la seva vida, aquell ideal estètic de signe mediterraneista i classitzant, que sorgia a Catalunya a principis del segle XX.

Manuel Brunet i Solà (1889-1956). El periodisme d'idees al servei de la "veritat personal"

This doctoral thesis deals with the intellectual biography of the writer and journalist Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889, Figueres, 1956). It reconstructs the life and professional studies of the author, and the most important facets of his literature and journalism. In addition, it examines his literary texts. A special emphasis has been placed on the study of journalistic production of Brunet and on the analysis of the professional profile of the author. Examination and assessment of its production has been accurate, including a classification of the items and a comparison of his journalistic style with that of other contemporary authors, both Catalan (Josep Pla and Joseph M. de Sagarra), French (Charles Maurras and Léon Daudet) and English (GK Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc). The latter part of the work analysises the condition of "victor won" of Manuel Brunet after the Spanish Civil War, and how this author is an example of a whole generation of conservative Catalan nationalist witers who lived a difficult situation after the conflict.

Olfactory attractiveness of mixtures of some host plant and conspecific semiochemicals to the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824)

A simple "Y" shaped olfactometer was used in laboratory studies on the olfactory attractiveness of mixtures in various proportions of industrial analogues of some host plant and conspecific-based semiochemicals, or their combinations with banana rhizome, to the banana weevil. The aim was to identify factors that influence their attractiveness to the weevil, and consider the possibility for their use as lures for trapping the weevil in the field. Cosmopolites sordidus was attracted to the mixtures at specific concentrations and proportions of constituent chemicals. 6-methylhept-5-en-2-one was only attractive on its own at 1 µl/100 ml and in mixture with 4- mercaptophenol, but not at 10 µl, 0.01 µl, or in combination with banana rhizome. 4-mercaptohpenol and 2-n-butylfuran, which were compatible with most host plant-based chemicals and were attractive as a mixture, were perceived to be key elements in the composition of attractants to the weevil. It was concluded that in addition to the composition, other factors that may determine the attractiveness or otherwise of a mixture to C. sordidus are the proportions and concentrations of the constituent chemicals.

Luteococcus sanguinis sp. nov., isolated from human blood

An unusual catalase-positive, Gram-positive, coccus-shaped bacterium that originated from a human blood specimen was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Cell-wall murein and lipid composition analyses indicated that the unknown isolate was a member of the genus Luteococcus. The results of comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis were consistent with chemotaxonomic findings and showed that the unidentified bacterium represents a hitherto unknown sublineage, within the genus Luteococcus that is closely related to, but distinct from, Luteococcus japonicus. On the basis of both phenotypic and phylogenetic evidence, it is proposed that the unknown bacterium from human blood should be classified as Luteococcus sanguinis sp. nov., with the type strain CCUG 33897(T) (=CIP 107216(T)).

Taxonomic review of Haliclystus antarcticus Pfeffer, 1889 (Stauromedusae, Staurozoa, Cnidaria), with remarks on the genus Haliclystus Clark, 1863

Difficulties concerning the taxonomy of stauromedusae are long known, and there is a clear need for taxonomic revision of the genus Haliclystus, as well as the reevaluation of some species. Haliclystus antarcticus Pfeffer, 1889 is recorded from Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula. Due to the lack of detailed information on this species, we provide a redescription, presenting new data on the cnidome, morphometry, geographical distribution and intraspecific variation. Based on these characters, we propose that our specimens and Haliclystus auricula from Chile and Argentina are synonymous and should be classified as H. antarcticus. We also review the worldwide distribution of the genus Haliclystus Clark, 1863 and discuss taxonomic issues, concluding that some characters traditionally used in the taxonomy of the group should be used cautiously.

O cidadão está nas ruas : a cidadania republicana em Porto Alegre (1889-1981)

A partir da leitura de jornais portoalegrenses do período de instalação do governo republicano, procura-se identificar quais as práticas e prepresentações articuladas pela população urbana sobre o que seja a identidade do cidadão e o exercício da cidadania. Através de uma ‘descrição densa’ faz-se uma ‘micro história’ das perspectivas de atuação política da população urbana. Percebemos em nossa pesquisa uma intensa movimentação popular em torno do debate político nacional e regional de onde concuímos que estes setores não ficaram apáticos diante da República. Ao contrário, diferentes grupos sociais mobilizam-se para defender suas representações para a identidade do cidadão, ou seja, manifestam uma ‘cidadania informal’. Assim age o PRR ao formula a identidade do ‘cidadão educado’, aquele que, por respeito e subimissão ao partido, vota em seus candidatos e obedece as determinações desses líderes. Já a dissidência republicana articula a identidade do ‘cidadão eleitor’, esse deve ser convencido pela campanha política das propostas por ela defendida. De outro lado entidades dos trabalhadores da cidade evocam a identidade de um ‘cidadão coletivo’ que, como ‘multidão’, expressa seus interesses políticos em diferentes manifestações de rua. Essas entidades ainda formulam a identidade do ‘cidadão candidato’ que se lança na disputa de vagas no Congresso Estadual Constituinte. Contudo a fraude eleitoral promovida pelo PRR expressa a existência apenas daquela primeira identidade. As outras manifestações de cidadania são sumariamente ignoradas e sufocadas pelo partido que entende-se o único representante legítimo da República na cidade. Percebemos, assim, a existência de uma visão autoritária da prática política, contudo, não podemos ignorar a existência e a legitimidade dessas outras representações da cidadania em Porto Alegre.
