A multiscale, multiphase thermokinetic model is used to show the effective control of the growth orientation of thin Si NWs for nanoelectronic devices enabled by nanoscale plasma chemistry. It is shown that very thin Si NWs with [110] growth direction can nucleate at much lower process temperatures and pressures compared to thermal chemical vapor deposition where [111]-directed Si NWs are predominantly grown. These findings explain a host of experimental results and offer the possibility of energy- and matter-efficient, size- and orientation-controlled growth of [110] Si NWs for next-generation nanodevices.

The possibility of fast, narrow-size/chirality nucleation of thin single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) at low, device-tolerant process temperatures in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is demonstrated using multiphase, multiscale numerical experiments. These effects are due to the unique nanoscale reactive plasma chemistry (NRPC) on the surfaces and within Au catalyst nanoparticles. The computed three-dimensional process parameter maps link the nanotube incubation times and the relative differences between the incubation times of SWCNTs of different sizes/chiralities to the main plasma- and precursor gas-specific parameters and explain recent experimental observations. It is shown that the unique NRPC leads not only to much faster nucleation of thin nanotubes at much lower process temperatures, but also to better selectivity between the incubation times of SWCNTs with different sizes and chiralities, compared to thermal CVD. These results are used to propose a time-programmed kinetic approach based on fast-responding plasmas which control the size-selective, narrow-chirality nucleation and growth of thin SWCNTs. This approach is generic and can be used for other nanostructure and materials systems.

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (CS-NCs) possess compelling benefits of low-cost, large-scale solution processing, and tunable optoelectronic properties through controlled synthesis and surface chemistry engineering. These merits make them promising candidates for a variety of applications. This review focuses on the general strategies and recent developments of the controlled synthesis of CS-NCs in terms of crystalline structure, particle size, dominant exposed facet, and their surface passivation. Highlighted are the organic-media based synthesis of metal chalcogenide (including cadmium, lead, and copper chalcogenide) and metal oxide (including titanium oxide and zinc oxide) nanocrystals. Current challenges and thus future opportunities are also pointed out in this review.

This study reports the synthesis, characterization and application of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI). The nZVI was produced by a reduction method and compared with commercial available ZVI powder for Pb2+ removal from aqueous phase. Comparing with commercial ZVI, the laboratory made nZVI powder has a much higher specific surface area. XRD patterns have revealed zero valent iron phases in two ZVI materials. Different morphologies have been observed using SEM and TEM techniques. EDX spectrums revealed even distribution of Pb on surface after reaction. The XPS analysis has confirmed that immobilized lead was present in its zero-valent and bivalent forms. ‘Core-shell’ structure of prepared ZVI was revealed based on combination of XRD and XPS characterizations. In addition, comparing with Fluka ZVI, this lab made nZVI has much higher reactivity towards Pb2+ and within just 15 mins 99.9% removal can be reached. This synthesized nano ZVI material has shown great potential for heavy metal immobilization from waste water.

Nano Zero valent iron (Fe0) were reported as an effective material for azo dye removal, however, similar to other nano-materials, ultra-fine powder has a strong tendency to agglomerate into larger particles, resulting in an adverse effect on both effective surface area and catalyst performance. Here we report nano sized Fe0 particles dispersed onto the surface of natural bentonites. X-ray diffraction was used to study the sample phases. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were applied to study the morphology and morphological changes. Spherical individual Fe0 particles were observed after dispersion onto bentonites, and these samples were used for orange II (OII) decolourization with wide working pH range. Higher reactivity is attributed to good dispersion of Fe0 particles on clay minerals’ surface. This study is significant for providing novel modified clay based catalyst materials for the decolourization of azo dye contaminants from wastewater.

The kinetics of acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of seven methylated aliphatic epoxides - R1R2C(O)CR3R4 (A: R1=R2=R3=R4=H; B: R1=R2=R3=H, R4=Me; C: R1=R2=H, R3=R4=Me; D: R1=R3=H, R2=R4=Me(trans); E: R1=R3=H, R2=R4=Me(cis); F: R1=R3=R4=Me, R2=H; G: R1=R2=R3=R4=Me) - has been studied at 36 ± 1.5°C. Compounds with two methyl groups at the same carbon atom of the oxirane ring exhibit highest rate constants (k(eff) in reciprocal molar concentration per second: 11.0 ± 1.3 for C, 10.7 ± 2.1 for F, and 8.7 ± 0.7 for G as opposed to 0.124 ± 0.003 for B, 0.305 ± 0.003 for D, and 0.635 ± 0.036 for E). Ethylene oxide (A) displays the lowest rate of hydrolysis (0.027 M-1 s-1). The results are consistent with literature data available for compounds A, B, and C. To model the reactivities we have employed quantum chemical calculations (MNDO, AM1, PM3, and MINDO/3) of the main reaction species. There is a correlation of the logarithm k(eff) with the total energy of epoxide ring opening. The best correlation coefficients (r) were obtained using the AM1 and MNDO methods (0.966 and 0.957, respectively). However, unlike MNDO, AM1 predicts approximately zero energy barriers for the oxirane ring opening of compounds B, C, E and G, which is not consistent with published kinetic data. Thus, the MNDO method provides a preferential means of modeling the acidic hydrolysis of the series of methylated oxiranes. The general ranking of mutagenicity in vitro, A > B > C, is in line with the concept that this sequence also gradually leaves the expoxide reactivity optimal for genotoxicity toward reactivities leading to higher biological detoxifications.

Abstract Ag-TiO2 and Au-TiO2 hybrid electrodes were designed by covalent attachment of TiO2 nanoparticles to Ag or Au electrodes via an organic linker. The optical and electronic properties of these systems were investigated using the cytochrome b5 (Cyt b5) domain of sulfite oxidase, exclusively attached to the TiO2 surface, as a Raman marker and model redox enzyme. Very strong SERR signals of Cyt b 5 were obtained for Ag-supported systems due to plasmonic field enhancement of Ag. Time-resolved surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopic measurements yielded a remarkably fast electron transfer kinetic (k = 60 s -1) of Cyt b5 to Ag. A much lower Raman intensity was observed for Au-supported systems with undefined and slow redox behavior. We explain this phenomenon on the basis of the different potential of zero charge of the two metals that largely influence the electronic properties of the TiO2 island film. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

MoS2 nanotube bundles along with embedded nested fullerenes were formed in a gas phase reaction of molybdenum carbonyl and H2S gas with the assistance of I2. The amorphous Mo-S-I intermediates obtained through quenching a modified MOCVD reaction in a large temperature gradient were annealed at elevated temperature in an inert atmosphere. Under the influence of the iodine the amorphous precursor formed a surface film with an enhanced mobility of the molybdenum and sulfur components. Point defects within the MoS2 layers combined with the enhanced surface diffusion lead to a scrolling of the inherently instable MoS2 lamellae.

Several cell-free assays are currently used to quantify and detect the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). All of them have certain limitations, do not provide direct comparison of results and, to date, none of these assays have been acknowledged as the most suitable acellular assay and none has yet been adopted for investigation of potential PM toxicity. These assays include DTT, ascorbic acid, DCFHDA and PFN assays which have been used in measurements of the particles generated from various combustion sources such as diesel engine, wood smoke (or biomass burning) and cigarette smoke, as well as for outdoor measurements. All the probes use different units for expressing redox properties of PM. Also, their reactivity is being triggered by different types of ROS. This limits the direct comparison of the results that are reporting the toxicity of the same aerosol type measured with various probes. This study is evaluating and comparing the various assays in order to develop deeper understanding of their capabilities, selectivity as well as improve understanding of the underlying chemical mechanisms. This work examined the suitability of the PAGAT gel dosimeter for use in dose distribution measurements around high-density implants. An assessment of the gels reactivity with various metals was performed and no corrosive effects were observed. An artefact reduction technique was also investigated in order to minimise scattering of the laser light in the optical CT scans. The potential for attenuation and backscatter measurements using this gel dosimeter were examined for a temporary tissue expander's internal magnetic port.

The role of different chemical compounds, particularly organics, involved in the new particle formation (NPF) and its consequent growth are not fully understood. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the chemistry of aerosol particles during NPF events in an urban subtropical environment. Aerosol chemical composition was measured along with particle number size distribution (PNSD) and several other air quality parameters at five sites across an urban subtropical environment. An Aerodyne compact Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (c-TOF-AMS) and a TSI Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) measured aerosol chemical composition and PNSD, respectively. Five NPF events, with growth rates in the range 3.3-4.6 nm, were detected at two sites. The NPF events happened on relatively warmer days with lower humidity and higher solar radiation. Temporal percent fractions of nitrate, sulphate, ammonium and organics were modelled using the Generalised Additive Model (GAM), with a basis of penalised spline. Percent fractions of organics increased after the NPF events, while the mass fraction of ammonium and sulphate decreased. This uncovered the important role of organics in the growth of newly formed particles. Three organic markers, factors f43, f44 and f57, were calculated and the f44 vs f43 trends were compared between nucleation and non-nucleation days. f44 vs f43 followed a different pattern on nucleation days compared to non-nucleation days, whereby f43 decreased for vehicle emission generated particles, while both f44 and f43 decreased for NPF generated particles. It was found for the first time that vehicle generated and newly formed particles cluster in different locations on f44 vs f43 plot and this finding can be used as a tool for source apportionment of measured particles.

A photochemical strategy enabling λ-orthogonal reactions is introduced to construct macromolecular architectures and to encode variable functional groups with site-selective precision into a single molecule by the choice of wavelength. λ-Orthogonal pericyclic reactions proceed independently of one another by the selection of functional groups that absorb light of specific wavelengths. The power of the new concept is shown by a one-pot reaction of equimolar quantities of maleimide with two polymers carrying different maleimide-reactive endgroups, that is, a photoactive diene (photoenol) and a nitrile imine (tetrazole). Under selective irradiation at λ=310–350 nm, any maleimide (or activated ene) end-capped compound reacts exclusively with the photoenol functional polymer. After complete conversion of the photoenol, subsequent irradiation at λ=270–310 nm activates the reaction of the tetrazole group with functional enes. The versatility of the approach is shown by λ-orthogonal click reactions of complex maleimides, functional enes, and polymers to the central polymer scaffold.
Structure evolution characterization of Anyang anthracites via H2O2 oxidization and HF acidification
Resumo:
The structural characteristics of the raw coal (AY), the H2O2 oxidized coals (AY–H2O2) and the HF acidized AY–H2O2 (AY–H2O2–HF) were investigated by SEM, X-ray diffraction, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The results indicate that the derivative coals show an obvious increase in the aromaticity, crystalline carbon content and hydroxyl content, especially the AY–H2O2–HF. The stacking layer number of crystalline carbon decreases and the aspect ratio (La/Lc) remarkably increases for AY–H2O2 and AY–H2O2–HF. The crystalline layers become much thinner. The particle size of AY–H2O2–HF in width significantly decreases from 1 μm to less than 100 nm. The combination of H2O2 oxidization and HF acidification is effective to reduce the size of the aromatic layers and to increase the reactivity of derivative coals. The process can help us obtain the superfine crystalline carbon materials like graphite structure.
