The ammonia oxidation reaction on supported polycrystalline platinum catalyst was investigated in an aluminum-based microreactor. An extensive set of reactions was included in the chemical reactor modeling to facilitate the construction of a kinetic model capable of satisfactory predictions for a wide range of conditions (NH3 partial pressure, 0.01-0.12 atm; O-2 partial pressure, 0.10-0.88 atm; temperature, 523-673 K; contact time, 0.3-0.7 ms). The elementary surface reactions used in developing the mechanism were chosen based on the literature data concerning ammonia oxidation on a Pt catalyst. Parameter estimates for the kinetic model were obtained using multi-response least squares regression analysis using the isothermal plug-flow reactor approximation. To evaluate the model, the behavior of a microstructured reactor was simulated by means of a complete Navier-Stokes model accounting for the reactions on the catalyst surface and the effect of temperature on the physico-chemical properties of the reacting mixture. In this way, the effect of the catalytic wall temperature non-uniformity and the effect of a boundary layer on the ammonia conversion and selectivity were examined. After further optimization of appropriate kinetic parameters, the calculated selectivities and product yields agree very well with the values actually measured in the microreactor. The application of an aluminum-based microstructured reactor/heat-exchanger for measuring reaction kinetics in the explosive region is presented. Platinum-catalyzed ammonia oxidation was chosen as a test reaction to demonstrate the feasibility of the method. The reaction kinetics was investigated in a wide range of conditions [NH3 partial pressure: 0.03-0.20 atm, O-2 partial pressure: 0.10-0.88atm; reactant flow 2000-3000 cm(3) min(-1) (STP); temperature 240-360degreesC] over a supported Pt/Al2O3 catalyst (mass of Al2O3 layer in the reactor, 1.95 mg; Pt/Al molar ratio, 0.71; Pt dispersion, 20%). The maximum temperature non-uniformity in the microstructured reactor was ca. 5degreesC, even at conditions corresponding to an adiabatic temperature rise of 1400degreesC. Based on the data obtained, a previous kinetic model for ammonia oxidation was extended. The modified 13-step model describes the data in a considerably wider range of conditions including those with high ammonia loadings and high reaction temperatures. The results indicate the large potential of microstructured devices as reliable tools for kinetic research of highly exothermic reactions.

The kinetics of oxidation of water to oxygen by MnO4-, mediated by thermally activated ruthenium dioxide hydrate, has been studied. The rate of catalysis is 0.8 order with respect to the surface concentration of MnO4- (which in turn appears to fit a Langmuir adsorption isotherm) and proportional to the catalyst concentration, but is independent of the concentration of manganese(II) ions. The catalysed reaction appears to have an activation energy of 50 +/- 1 kJ mol-1. These observed kinetics are readily rationalised using an electrochemical model in which the catalyst particles act as microelectrodes providing a medium for electron transfer between the highly irreversible oxidation of water to O2 and the highly irreversible reduction of MnO4- to Mn2+.

A number of different, characterised, supported and unsupported oxides of Ru(IV) and Ir(IV) have been tested for activity as a chlorine catalyst in the oxidation of brine by Ce(IV) ions. All the different materials tested gave yields of chlorine of > 90% and first-order kinetics for the reduction of the Ce(IV) ions. The samples prepared by the Adams method were the most active of the materials tested and are typified by high surface areas and appreciable activities per unit area. The kinetics of the catalysed reduction of Ce(IV) ions by brine were studied in detail using an Ru(IV) oxide prepared by the Adams method and supported on TiO2 and the results were rationalised in terms of an electrochemical model in which the rate-determining step is the diffusion-controlled reduction of Ce(IV) ions. In support of this model the measured activation energies for the oxidation of brine by Ce(IV) ions, catalysed by either a supported or unsupported Adams catalyst, were both close (18-21 kJ mol-1) to that expected for a diffusion-controlled reaction (ca. 15 kJ mol-1).

Ruthenium red, a di-mu-oxo-bridged ruthenium complex, and its oxidised form, ruthenium brown, have been studied as possible homogeneous redox catalysts for the oxidation of water to O2 by Ce(IV) ions in H2SO4 and HCIO4. In both media the Ce(IV) ions oxidised the ruthenium red to brown and, with excess of Ce(IV), decomposed the ruthenium brown irreversibly to product(s) with three weak absorption bands at 390, 523 and 593 nm. Only in HCIO4 did the decomposition product(s) appear to act as a stable O2 catalyst. Spectral evidence tentatively suggests that the active catalyst may be a hydrolysed Ru(IV) polymeric species. The rate of catalysis was proportional to the initial concentration of ruthenium red/brown and the activation energy was determined as 36 +/- 1 kJ mol-1 over the temperature range ambient to ca. 50-degrees-C. At temperatures greater than 50-degrees-C the O2 catalyst undergoes an irreversible thermal decomposition reaction.

Spectroscopic absorption and emission measurements have been used to study laser deposition of YBCO films. They show that >95% of the monatomic Y and Ba initially ablated from the target undergo gas-phase chemical combination before film deposition. In contrast, considerable monatomic Cu persists into the deposition region. in this region, equilibrated gas temperatures are of the order of 2700 K. It is suggested that this high temperature facilitates film crystallization and epitaxial growth. The survival of monatomic Cu in the plume to the site of deposition is a manifestation of its endothermic reaction with O-2.

Tetrahexahedral Pt nanocrystals (THH Pt NCs), bound by high index facets, belong to an emerging class of nanomaterials that promise to bridge the gap between model and practical electrocatalysts. The atomically stepped surfaces of THH Pt NCs are extremely active for the electrooxidation of small organic molecules but they also readily accommodate the dissociative chemisorption of such species, resulting in poisoning by strongly adsorbed CO. Formic acid oxidation is an ideal reaction for studying the balance between these competing catalyst characteristics, since it can proceed by either a direct or a CO mediated pathway. Herein, we describe electrochemical and in situ FTIR spectroscopic investigations of formic acid electrooxidation at both clean and Au adatom modified THH Pt NC surfaces. The Au decoration leads to higher catalytic currents and enhanced CO2 production in the low potential range. As the CO oxidation behaviour of the catalyst is not changed by the presence of the Au, it is likely that the role of the Au is to promote the direct pathway. Beyond their fundamental importance, these results are significant in the development of stable, poison resistant anodic electrocatalysts for direct formic acid fuel cells.
