Background.  Limited data exist on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals' ability to work after receiving combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). We aimed to investigate predictors of regaining full ability to work at 1 year after starting cART. Methods.  Antiretroviral-naive HIV-infected individuals <60 years who started cART from January 1998 through December 2012 within the framework of the Swiss HIV Cohort Study were analyzed. Inability to work was defined as a medical judgment of the patient's ability to work as 0%. Results.  Of 5800 subjects, 4382 (75.6%) were fully able to work, 471 (8.1%) able to work part time, and 947 (16.3%) were unable to work at baseline. Of the 947 patients unable to work, 439 (46.3%) were able to work either full time or part time at 1 year of treatment. Predictors of recovering full ability to work were non-white ethnicity (odds ratio [OR], 2.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20-3.54), higher education (OR, 4.03; 95% CI, 2.47-7.48), and achieving HIV-ribonucleic acid <50 copies/mL (OR, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.20-2.80). Older age (OR, 0.55; 95% CI, .42-.72, per 10 years older) and psychiatric disorders (OR, 0.24; 95% CI, .13-.47) were associated with lower odds of ability to work. Recovering full ability to work at 1 year increased from 24.0% in 1998-2001 to 41.2% in 2009-2012, but the employment rates did not increase. Conclusions.  Regaining full ability to work depends primarily on achieving viral suppression, absence of psychiatric comorbidity, and favorable psychosocial factors. The discrepancy between patients' ability to work and employment rates indicates barriers to reintegration of persons infected with HIV.

Bone morphogenesis is a complex biological process. The multistep process of chondrogenesis is the most important aspect of endochondral bone formation. To study the mechanisms which control this multistep pathway of chondrogenesis during embryonic development, I started by isolating cDNAs encoding novel transcriptional factors from chondrocytes. Several such cDNAs encoding putative homeoproteins were identified from a rat chondrosarcoma cDNA preparation. I have been concentrating on characterizing two of these cDNAs. The deduced amino acid sequence of the first homeoprotein, Cart-1, contains a prd-type homeodomain. Northern hybridization and RNase protection analysis revealed that Cart-1 RNAs were present at high levels in a well differentiated rat chondrosarcoma tumor and in a cell line derived from this tumor. Cart-1 transcripts were also detected in primary chondrocytes, but not in numerous other cell types except very low levels in testis. In situ hybridization of rat embryos at different stages of development revealed relatively high levels of Cart-1 RNAs in prechondrocytic mesenchymal cells and in early chondrocytes of cartilage primordia. It is speculated that Cart-1 might play an important role in chondrogenesis. The second putative homeoprotein, rDlx, contains a Distal-less-like homeodomain. rDlx RNAs were also present at high levels in the rat chondrosarcoma tumor and in the cell line derived from this tumor. In situ hybridization of rat embryos revealed high levels of rDlx transcripts in the developing cartilages and perichondria of mature cartilages. rDlx transcripts were also detected in a number of nonchondrogenic tissues such as forebrain, otic vesicles, olfactory epithelia, apical ectodermal ridge (AER) of limb buds, the presumptive Auerbach ganglia of gastrointestinal tract. The unique expression pattern of rDlx suggests that it might play important roles in chondrogenesis and other aspects of embryogenesis. ^

How do sportspeople succeed in a non-collaborative game? An illustration of a perverse side effect of altruism Are team sports specialists predisposed to collaboration? The scientific literature on this topic is divided. The present article attempts to end this debate by applying experimental game theory. We constituted three groups of volunteers (all students aged around 20): 25 team sports specialists; 23 individual sports specialists (gymnasts, track & field athletes and swimmers) and a control group of 24 non-sportspeople. Each subgroup was divided into 3 teams that played against each other in turn (and not against teams from other subgroups). The teams played a game based on the well-known Prisoner's Dilemma (Tucker, 1950) - the paradoxical "Bluegill Sunbass Game" (Binmore, 1999) with three Nash equilibria (two suboptimal equilibria with a pure strategy and an optimal equilibrium with a mixed, egotistical strategy (p= 1/2)). This game also features a Harsanyi equilibrium (based on constant compliance with a moral code and altruism by empathy: "do not unto others that which you would not have them do unto you"). How, then, was the game played? Two teams of 8 competed on a handball court. Each team wore a distinctive jersey. The game lasted 15 minutes and the players were allowed to touch the handball ball with their feet or hands. After each goal, each team had to return to its own half of the court. Players were allowed to score in either goal and thus cooperate with their teammates or not, as they saw fit. A goal against the nominally opposing team (a "guardian" strategy, by analogy with the Bluegill Sunbass Game) earned a point for everyone in the team. For an own goal (a "sneaker" strategy), only the scorer earned a point - hence the paradox. If all the members of a team work together to score a goal, everyone is happy (the Harsanyi solution). However, the situation was not balanced in the Nashian sense: each player had a reason to be disloyal to his/her team at the merest opportunity. But if everyone adopts a "sneaker" strategy, the game becomes a free-for-all and the chances of scoring become much slimmer. In a context in which doubt reigns as to the honesty of team members and "legal betrayals", what type of sportsperson will score the most goals? By analogy with the Bluegill Sunbass Game, we recorded direct motor interactions (passes and shots) based on either a "guardian" tactic (i.e. collaboration within the team) or a "sneaker" tactic (shots and passes against the player's designated team). So, was the group of team sports specialist more collaborative than the other two groups? The answer was no. A statistical analysis (difference from chance in a logistic regression) enabled us to draw three conclusions: ?For the team sports specialists, the Nash equilibrium (1950) was stronger than the Harsanyi equilibrium (1977). ?The sporting principles of equilibrium and exclusivity are not appropriate in the Bluegill Sunbass Game and are quickly abandoned by the team sports specialists. The latter are opportunists who focus solely on winning and do well out of it. ?The most altruistic players are the main losers in the Bluegill Sunbass Game: they keep the game alive but contribute to their own defeat. In our experiment, the most altruistic players tended to be the females and the individual sports specialists

The aeronautical charts are a convenient means to provide aeronautical information in a manageable, condensed, and coordinated way. Despite having an extensive regulatory legislation backed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), this kind of specialized mapping is defined by a marked symbolical disparity between the different editions published by countries and publishers. This implies not to follow the uniformity and consistency principles that ICAO have identified as essential to help ensure the safety of international civil aviation. Plans for the implementation of a global interoperability of aeronautical information require urgently rethink the way in which, so far, this information has been published and disseminated. A single, transverse, and independent symbolical specification would contribute to the generation of a well defined final-product that provides general purpose aeronautical information for an unequivocal interpretation. The contribution of this article is the verification of the real possibilities for the definition of a general specification that provides the mechanisms for a reliable, indisputable, and legible reading of aeronautical charts under any operational circumstances and conditions. Such conditions must be aligned with the specificities of any country, publishers or crew.
