This study was designed to evaluate the effect of nutritional supplementation offered during the pre- and postpartum periods on serum cholesterol, triglycerides and total lipids of Canchim beef cows and their relationship with folliculogenesis. Thirty cows with predicted calving date between September and October, kept in pastures of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu together with their calves, were randomly distributed into three experimental groups: the first received only a mineral mixture (Control Group, CG); the second group received a concentrate with 16% crude protein/kg dry matter (DM) and 3000 kcal digestible energy/kg DM offered for 45 days prepartum and 120 days postpartum (PREG); the third group received the concentrate from parturition until the 120th day postpartum (POSG). Consumption was estimated at 1% of body weight, and each cow received approximately 4.0 kg/day (fresh weight) of supplement. Blood samples were taken and an ultrasound examination of the ovaries was performed twice a week until the 60th day postpartum. The body condition score (BCS) and the weight of the cows were recorded at 15-day intervals from calving until the 60th day postpartum. Data are presented as mean +/- SEM. Mean weight and BCS at calving were, respectively, 448 +/- 54.9 kg and 6.2 +/- 0.25 (PREG); 432 +/- 71.1 kg and 5.5 +/- 0.69 (POSG); and 434 +/- 66.4 kg and 5.5 +/- 0.69 (CG). Total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TRIG) and total lipids (TLIP) were measured using colorimetry until the 60th day postpartum. TC averages were PREG 186 +/- 62.6 mg/dL, POSG 159 +/- 43.1 mg/dL and CG 133 +/- 35.1 mg/dL (P < 0.05). For TRIG, the means were PREG 29 +/- 11.3 mg/dL (P < 0.05), POSG 24 +/- 8.1 mg/dL and CG 26 +/- 12.1 mg/dL (P > 0.05). Serum concentrations of TLIP were PREG 588 +/- 145.6 mg/dL, POSG 512 +/- 137.6 mg/dL and CG 452 +/- 122.4 mg/dL (P < 0.05). The first dominant follicle (DF) was identified on Day 21 +/- 10.3 (PREG), 36 +/- 28.5 (POSG) and 51 +/- 32.8 (CG) after calving. The difference between PREG and CG was significant (P < 0.05). TC was positively correlated with the calving to first estrus interval (P < 0.05). Results showed that nutritional supplementation before parturition assured good body condition at calving and suggested that it was effective at increasing cholesterol availability to maintain ovarian follicle function and to favor earlier resumption of ovarian activity. The effects of agricultural-pastoral and tillage practices on soil microbial populations and activities have not been systematically investigated. The effect of no-tillage (NT), no-tillage agricultural-pastoral integrated systems (NT-I) and conventional tillage (CT) at soil depths of 0-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm on the microbial populations (bacteria and fungi), biomass-C, potential nitrification, urease and protease activities, total organic matter and total N contents were investigated. The crops used were soybean (in NT, NT-I and CT systems), corn (in NT and NT-I systems) and Tanner grass (Brachiaria sp.) (in NT-I system); a forest system was used as a control. Urease and protease activities, biomass-C and the content of organic matter and total N were higher (p < 0.05) in the forest soil than the other soils. Potential nitrification was significantly higher in the NT-I system in comparison with the other systems. Bacteria numbers were similar in all systems. Fungi counts were similar in the CT and forest, but both were higher than in NT. All of these variables were dependent on the organic matter content and decreased (p < 0.05) from the upper soil layer to the deeper soil layers. These results indicate that the no-tillage agricultural-pasture-integrated systems may be useful for soil conservation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the nitrogen topdressing influence in common bean irrigated (winter-spring), in the first year of no tillage implementation. The experimental design was split-plot with three replications in randomized blocks. The plots were formed by three types of ground cover, corn-grain, corn-grain intercropped with Brachiaria ruziziensis and only B. ruziziensis. The subplots were formed by five doses of nitrogen topdressing (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg ha(-1)), using urea as nitrogen source. It was determined the dry mass of residue present as ground cover, the full flowering time, the leaf nitrogen content, the 100 grains mass, the grain yield, the processing income, the chemical soil properties and economic analysis of common bean grain yield. It was found the common bean grain productivity in succession to corn-grain was positively influenced by nitrogen fertilization, showing it is economically viable only when given 160 kg ha(-1) of nitrogen and the intercropping corn-grain and B. ruziziensis use is the best option when the common bean is sown in succession.

The species of cover crops in pre-harvest of maize crop may influence the soil chemical properties. The objective was to evaluate soil fertility due to the use of plant species cover, previously cultivated with maize crop in no-tillage and conventional and subjected to nitrogen. The experiment was conducted at UNESP in Jaboticabal-SP, in an Oxisol clay during the crop years 2000/01, 2001/02 and 2002/03. The experimental design was randomized blocks in split plots with four replications. The treatments consisted of nitrogen (0, 60 and 120 kg N ha(-1)) and planting systems, and three under no-tillage system with the use of cover crops: Brachiaria, millet, Crotalaria and lablab, and under a conventional tillage. We evaluated at the flowering stage of corn, covering the crop year 2002-2003, the chemical soil layers (0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20; 0.20-0.30 m deep). Tillage systems and nitrogen levels influenced differently to the chemical properties of soil layers studied. Regardless of the nitrogen used in the conventional treatment showed lower organic matter content, calcium and value of sum of bases in the topsoil.

The increased availability of soil water is important for the management of non-irrigated orange orchards. The objective of this study was to evaluate the availability of soil water in a Haplorthox (Rhodic Ferralsol) under different tillage systems used for orchard plantation, mulch management and rootstocks in a "Pera" orange orchard in northwest Parana, Brazil. An experiment in a split-split-plot design was established in 2002, in an area cultivated with Brachiaria brizantha grass in which three tillage systems (no tillage, conventional tillage and strip-tillage) were used for orchard plantation. This grass was mowed twice a year between the rows, representing two mulch managements in the split plots (no mulching and mulching in the plant rows). The split-split-plots were represented by two rootstocks ("Rangpur" lime and "Cleopatra" mandarin). The soil water content in the plant rows was evaluated in the 0-20 cm layer in 2007 and at 0-20 and 20-40 cm in 2008-2009. The effect of soil tillage systems prior to implantation of orange orchards on soil water availability was less pronounced than mulching and the rootstocks. The soil water availability was lower when "Pera" orange trees were grafted on "Cleopatra" mandarin than on "Rangpur" lime rootstocks. Mulching had a positive influence on soil water availability in the sandy surface layer (020 cm) and sandy clay loam subsurface (20-40 cm) of the soil in the spring. The production of B. brizantha between the rows and residue disposal in the plant rows as mulch increased water availability to the "Pera" orange trees.

The cultivation of pastures in Brazil is mostly done with the species Brachiaria spp. However, there is little research on nutrition with manganese for this forage. It was aimed to asses the effects of manganese in the development and nutrition of marandu grass. The experimental design used was fully randomized, consisting of five rates of manganese ( 0, 15, 30, 60 e 120 mg dm(-3)) and four repetitions. The experimental unit was formed in a vase filled with a Red Latosol dystrophic. There were two cuts, the first after 38 days of transplanting seedling and the second 30 days after the first cut. Was evaluated the content of manganese leaf, the dry mass of the shoot, the number of tillers and the leaf area. The levels of manganese increased its accumulation in the plant, second cut compared to the first cut. The marandu grass showed high tolerance to manganese toxicity, reaching a high leaf content in the shoot without affecting plant growth.
