Electrocaloric Effect in 0.85PMN-0.15PT Thin Films Deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition

The electrocaloric effect (ECE) of 0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3-)0.15PbTiO(3) (0.85PMN-0.15PT) thin films deposited on (111) Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been calculated. The reversible adiabatic temperature was calculated indirectly using the Maxwell's relation Delta T = -T/C rho integral(E2)(E1) (partial derivative P/partial derivative T)(sigma,E)dE. Permittivity and P-E measurements show an anomaly at 11 degrees C on heating only. This anomaly previously reported are claimed to arise due to the PNR depolarization upon heating. The absence of this anomaly during cooling suggests that no structural phase transition takes place. A negative electrocaloric effect is observed which is explained by the increase in the entropy term.

Evaluation of benzothiophene carboxamides as analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents

Nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) represent standard therapy for the alleviation of pain and inflammation. At present various classes of compounds have been reported as selective inhibitors of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). However, they are associated with adverse side effects. To address these issues, we report here a new class of compounds that exhibit potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory response. Substituted bromo-benzothiophene carboxamides (4-11) were examined for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Our findings demonstrate that newly synthesized bromo-benzothiophene carboxamide derivatives 4, 6, and 8 attenuate nociception and inflammation at lower concentration than classical NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen. These compounds act by selectively inhibiting COX-2 and by disrupting the prostaglandin-E2-dependent positive feedback of COX-2 regulation, which was further substantiated by reduction in the levels of cytokines, chemokines, neutrophil accumulation, synthesis of prostaglandin-E2, expression of COX-2, and neutrophil activation at lower concentration than the classic NSAID ibuprofen. Toxicological study reveals that these compounds are well tolerated and metabolized to avoid any toxicity. Thus, these molecules represent a new class of analgesic and anti-inflammatory agents. Neonatal exposure to 17 beta-estradiol down-regulates the expression of synaptogenesis related genes in selected brain regions of adult female rats

Aims: Administration of estradiol or compounds with estrogenic activity to newborn female rats results in irreversible masculinization as well as defeminization in the brain and the animals exhibit altered reproductive behavior as adults. The cellular and molecular mechanism involved in inducing the irreversible changes is largely unknown. In the present study, we have monitored the changes in the expression of selected synaptogenesis related genes in the sexually dimorphic brain regions such as POA, hypothalamus and pituitary following 17 beta-estradiol administration to neonatal female rats. Main methods: Female Wistar rats which were administered 17 beta-estradiol on day 2 and 3 after birth were sacrificed 120 days later and the expression levels of genes implicated in synaptogenesis were monitored by semi-quantitative reverse transcription PCR. Since estradiol induced up-regulation of COX-2 in POA is a marker for estradiol induced masculinization as well as defeminization, in the present study only animals in which the increase in expression of COX-2 gene was observed in POA were included in the study. Key findings: Down-regulation of genes such as NMDA-2B, NETRIN-1, BDNF, MT-5 MMP and TNF-alpha was observed in the pre-optic area of neonatally E2 treated female rat brain but not in hypothalamus and pituitary compared to the vehicle- treated controls as assessed by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Significance: Our results suggest a possibility that down-regulation of genes associated with synaptogenesis in POA, may be resulting in disruption of the cyclical regulation of hormone secretion by pituitary the consequence of which could be infertility and altered reproductive behavior. Determinación de la incidencia de parásitos internos en los bovinos del Complejo uno y dos de la Empresa Genética Agenor Gómez, Boaco, Nicaragua

El presente trabajo se realizó en el periodo comprendido entre Noviembre y Diciembre de 1989, con el objetivo de investigar la infestación de parásitos gastrointestinales y pulmonares de mayor importancia económica en los bovinos del complejo 1 y 2 de la empresa genética Agenor Gómez. Boaco, Nicaragua. Se muestrearon 242 animales, entre bovinos de la raza Aberdeen Angus y Brahman, distribuidos en las categorías siguientes: C1 (0-1 año), C2 (1-3 años) y C3 (>3 años). Las muestras fueron extraídas directamente del recto animal, luego refrigeradas a 5°C y fueron analizadas en laboratorio de parasitología del MIDINRA, localizado en municipio de Camoapa V región. La cantidad de huevos y larvas se registró para cada género empleando las técnicas de sedimentación en agua, flotación con solución salina saturada y el método de larvoscopia e identificación con fotografías. Al realizar el ANDEVA por género de parásitos reportados en el análisis coprológico para la variable N° de huevos y larvas/gr de heces, se encontró que existen diferencias significativas con P>0.05 entre los promedios observados de los diferentes hatos. Los niveles de infestación promedio en los distintos hatos oscilaron entre 0u y 2lu; donde u= número de huevos y larvas/gramos de heces. De estos 48 promedios (8 hatos por 6 géneros de parásitos), 6 alcanzaron valores >9; 1 hato C1 de la upe Las Brisas con media de 2lu del género Haemonchus, 1 hato e de la upe San Miguel con media de 20.87u del género Strongyloides, 1 hato C2 de la upe San Jorge con media de 17.69u del género Strongyloides, 2 hatos C1 de las upe las Brisas y San Miguel con medias de 10.67u y medias de 10.5u respectivamente, ambos del género Coccidia y 1 hato e2 de la upe San Jorge con media de 9.6lu del género Coccidia. En los promedios restantes se obtuvieron valores <6u perteneciendo a la calificación leve. Posteriormente se realizó un análisis de correlación para determinar el grado de asociación existente entre cada uno de los géneros de parásitos económicamente importantes, encontrándose que el género Coccidia presentó el mayor grado de correlación con respecto a los demás géneros encontrados, se encontró que las correlaciones >= 0.25 corresponden a los géneros Coccidia, Moniezia, Neoascaris, Strongyloides y Haemonchus con r de 0.25, 0.25, 0.48, 0.30 respectivamente, similar para Haemonchus y Moniezia con r de 0.289.

Through LSC funding, Thurrock Adult Community College (TACC) purchased a single-deck bus, equipped with all the essential equipment that has allowed them to deliver fundamental IT skills within local communities. The bus travels to various local towns and villages which in turn has brought learning to the learners. This has proved to be very useful for those who perhaps have difficulty travelling to the main campuses or do not have the confidence to enrol on a course.

South Essex College: Learner voice - a 360-degree approach

South Essex College has developed a college intranet called C_Space. This has grown from a handful of HTML pages to an intranet hosting 70 in-house developed applications and two million staff and student-generated pages. In the past three years, the College has developed a range of social networking tools within the site to engage students. This has provided a 360-degree appraisal system for the College, which has informed the content and design of the intranet, as well as influenced the overall development of the College.

Action for Children – Introducing collaborative learning using Google Apps for Education

Paul Kendrick, Vocational Trainer for Action Training, has created a bespoke virtual learning environment (VLE) utilising Google Apps for Education. Learners and trainers are now more fulfilled as they have greater ownership of their learning environment and can pick which applications best suit their learning needs. They can also work more collaboratively as they are able to share documents with other learners and trainers between different locations.

Oaklands College: Creating Collaborative Classrooms Online with LAMS (The Learning Activity Management System)

e-Learning Developer, Charlie Williams, has improved efficiencies at Oaklands College with the introduction of LAMS, the Learning Activity Management System. Charlie has worked alongside teachers at the College to create activities for a range of individual tasks, small group work and whole classes, based on online content and collaboration. Since 2010, this blended learning environment has improved retention as students can work at hours that suit them, and has given teachers more time to work on future lessons and other tasks.

Essex ACL - Broadening horizons with blended learning - technology toolkit for foreign language tutors

As part of an LSIS Regional Response Fund project, Essex Adult Community Learning (ACL) has created a toolkit. The toolkit provides training for foreign language tutors in producing digital resources which combine audio, video, text and communication activities. The toolkit which is now an integral part of a blended learning language course, has also developed tutors' skills in using technology for teaching and learning. The main aim has also been to provide an alternative and flexible method of delivery, especially where funding cuts have impacted on the cost of running taught courses.

Learners who were once deluged by stacks of paper and unable to utilise an internet connection in a horse yard are now able to access interactive learning exercises using Maxos: Xerte on a memory stick. Students are now more engaged and focused on their studies, teaching methods are much more diverse, and success rates have improved.

Clearly, research tools have increasing value for researchers in their research activities. Knowledge Exchange recently commissioned a project to explore use case studies to show research tools’ potential and relevance for the present research landscape.
