1, Studies of evolutionary temperature adaptation of muscle and locomotor performance in fish are reviewed with a focus on the Antarctic fauna living at subzero temperatures. 2. Only limited data are available to compare the sustained and burst swimming kinematics and performance of Antarctic, temperate and tropical species. Available data indicate that low temperatures limit maximum swimming performance and this is especially evident in fish larvae. 3, In a recent study, muscle performance in the Antarctic rock cod Notothenia coriiceps at 0 degrees C was found to be sufficient to produce maximum velocities during burst swimming that were similar to those seen in the sculpin Myoxocephalus scorpius at 10 degrees C, indicating temperature compensation of muscle and locomotor performance in the Antarctic fish. However, at 15 degrees C, sculpin produce maximum swimming velocities greater than N, coriiceps at 0 degrees C, 4, It is recommended that strict hypothesis-driven investigations using ecologically relevant measures of performance are undertaken to study temperature adaptation in Antarctic fish, Recent detailed phylogenetic analyses of the Antarctic fish fauna and their temperate relatives will allow a stronger experimental approach by helping to separate what is due to adaptation to the cold and what is due to phylogeny alone.

MinE is an oligomeric protein that, in conjunction with other Min proteins, is required for the proper placement of the cell division site of Escherichia coli. We have examined the self-association properties of MinE by analytical ultracentrifugation and by studies of hetero-oligomer formation in non-denaturing polyacrylamide gets. The self-association properties of purified MinE predict that cytoplasmic MinE is likely to exist as a mixture of monomers and dimers. Consistent with this prediction, the C-terminal MinE(22-88) fragment forms hetero-oligomers with MinE(+) when the proteins are co-expressed. In contrast, the MinE(36-88) fragment does not form MinE(+)/MinE(36-88) hetero-oligomers, although MinE36-88 affects the topological specificity of septum placement as shown by its ability to induce minicell formation when co-expressed with MinE(+) in wild-type cells. Therefore, hetero-oligomer formation is not necessary for the induction of mini-celling by expression of MinE(36-88) in wild-type cells. The interference with normal septal placement is ascribed to competition between MinE(36-88),nd the corresponding domain in the complete MinE protein for a component required for the topological specificity of septal placement.

The diet and feeding habits of the epaulette shark, Hemiscyllium ocellatum, were investigated through stomach content analysis. Five groups of prey items were found. The index of relative importance showed worms and crabs,to be of greatest value at 51.3% and 40.1% respectively. The three minor prey groups were shrimps (7.7%), small fishes (0.7%) and amphipods (0.3%). Epaulette sharks tend to be crepuscular, although feeding bouts may occur at any time. They appear to be opportunistic predators, using olfaction and electroreception in prey capture. This species appears to be an important benthic predator in the reef flat environment on Heron Island Reef.

The functional importance of members of the S100 Ca2+-binding protein family is recently emerging. A variety of activities, several of which are apparently opposing, are attributed to S100A8, a protein implicated in embryogenesis, growth, differentiation, and immune and inflammatory processes. Murine (m) S100A8 was initially described as a chemoattractant (CP-10) for myeloid cells. It is coordinately expressed with mS100A9 (MRP14) in neutrophils and the non-covalent heterodimer is presumed to be the functional intracellular species. The extracellular chemotactic activity of mS100A8, however, is not dependent on mS100A9 and occurs at concentrations (10(-13)-10(-11) M) at which the non-covalent heterodimer would probably dissociate. This review focuses on the structure and post-translational modifications of mS100A8/A9 and their effects on function, particularly chemotaxis.

Two species of Deretrema (Zoogonidae) are reported from labrid fishes from the Great Barrier Reef. D. nahaense Yamaguti, 1942 is recorded from the gall-bladders of the labrids Thalassoma hardwicke (Bennett), T. jansenii (Bleeker), T. lunare (Linnaeus) and T. lutescens (Lay & Bennett). This species is recognised, despite having been formerly synonymised with D. pacificum Yamaguti, 1942. In addition to morphological distinction, D. nahaense appears to have strict host-specificity for the genus Thalassoma. D. woolcockae n.sp. is described from the gall-bladder of Hemigymnus fasciatus (Bloch). The new species is close to D. acutum Pritchard, 1963 and D. plotosi Yamaguti, 1940, but differs slightly in the distribution of the vitelline follicles, the sucker-ratio and the position of the cirrus-sac. In addition, this species also appears to have a distinct host-specificity, being restricted to one labrid species.

The integral of the Wigner function over a subregion of the phase space of a quantum system may be less than zero or greater than one. It is shown that for systems with 1 degree of freedom, the problem of determining the best possible upper and lower bounds on such an integral, over an possible states, reduces to the problem of finding the greatest and least eigenvalues of a Hermitian operator corresponding to the subregion. The problem is solved exactly in the case of an arbitrary elliptical region. These bounds provide checks on experimentally measured quasiprobability distributions.

The ultrastructure of the tegument and tegument-associated microorganisms of the gyliauchenid digenean Gyliauchen nahaensis is described by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The tegument is devoid of surface spines and is characterized by a moderately folded apical membrane, abundant vesicles, basal mitochondria, a folded basal plasma membrane, and a thick basal matrix. Microorganisms form a dense biofilm on the tegument of the posterodorsal surface and the excretory papilla. At least 7 microbial morphotypes were identified, including eubacteria, spirochaetes, and nanobacteria.

The Alzheimer's disease amyloid protein precursor (APP) gene is part of a multi-gene super-family from which sixteen homologous amyloid precursor-like proteins (APLP) and APP species homologues have been isolated and characterised. Comparison of exon structure (including the uncharacterised APL-1 gene), construction of phylogenetic trees, and analysis of the protein sequence alignment of known homologues of the APP super-family were performed to reconstruct the evolution of the family and to assess the functional significance of conserved protein sequences between homologues. This analysis supports an adhesion function for all members of the APP super family, with specificity determined by those sequences which are not conserved between APLP lineages, and provides evidence for an increasingly complex APP superfamily during evolution. The analysis also suggests that Drosophila APPL and Caenorhabdotids elegans APL-1 may be a fourth APLP lineage indicating that these proteins, while not functional homologues of human APP, are similarly likely to regulate cell adhesion. Furthermore, the beta A4 sequence is highly conserved only in APP orthologues, strongly suggesting this sequence is of significant functional importance in this lineage. Pulse-amplitude-modulation chlorophyll fluorometry was used to examine changes in dark-adapted F-v/F-m of endosymbiotic dinoflagellate microalgae within the tissues of the temperate coral Plesiastrea versipora exposed to elevated seawater temperature. The F-v/F-m was markedly reduced following exposure of corals to 28 degrees C for 48 h. When corals were returned to ambient (24 degrees C) conditions, F-v/F-m increased in an initial rapid and then secondary slower phase. Tissue discolouration (coral bleaching), caused by a significant decrease in the density of algae, was observed during the first 2-3 days of the recovery period. After 14 days, F-v/F-m was still significantly lower than in control corals. The recovery of F-v/F-m is discussed in terms of repair processes within the symbiotic algae, division of healthy algae and also the selective removal of photo-damaged dinoflagellates. Under field conditions, bleached corals sampled at Heron Island Reef during a bleaching event had significantly lower F-v/F-m than non-bleached colonies; four months after the bleaching event, there were no differences in F-v/F-m or algal density in corals marked as having bleached or having shown no signs of colour loss. The results of this laboratory and field study are consistent with the hypothesis that an impairment of photosynthesis occurs during heat-stress, and is the underlying cause of coral bleaching.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is one of the world's most popular scuba diving destinations. Unfortunately, a series of recent diving injuries and deaths has tarnished the region's safety record. In particular, media attention surrounding the disappearance of American divers Thomas and Eileen Lonergan has focused attention on dive operators' legal responsibilities and the consequences of failing to discharge their duty of care to customers. This paper briefly examines the relevant Australian law for recreational diving operations, and reviews risk management strategies that may reduce or prevent the occurrence of future problems. The new acanthocolpid genus Venusicola is erected for V. inusitatus sp, n. from the marine tuskfish Choerodon venustus from Heron Island on the southern Great Barrier Reef. This genus is unique in the family in having a greatly elongated ventral sucker with lateral apertural lips and a pavement of blunt spines lining the aperture.
