En estos comentarios nos ocupamos de los cardos y su influencia en el desarrollo de las tareas rurales durante el siglo XIX, a partir de los siguientes puntos de discusión: La localización de los cardos en el ámbito de la provincia de Buenos Aires; su forma de reproducción; cual es la relación existente entre la presencia de cardos y la presencia de hombres y animales; el manejo y la organización del trabajo en la estancia primitiva en función de los cardos, la influencia del cardo en la yerra y su papel de condicionante temporal. Contrariamente a lo que la historiografía había supuesto, consideramos que los cardos no determinaron el ritmo de las tareas rurales, sino que esto estuvo más relacionado con la escasez de mano de obra.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 198, Sites 1207, 1208, 1212, 1213, and 1214 were drilled on Shatsky Rise, coring Lower to mid-Cretaceous successions of nannofossil chalk, porcellanite, and chert. Although recovery was poor, these sites yielded an outstanding record of calcareous nannoplankton, providing valuable data concerning the evolutionary succession and paleobiogeography of the largest Cretaceous marine habitat. Mid-Cretaceous sections (Aptian-Cenomanian) were recovered at all sites, and Site 1213 includes an apparently complete Berriasian-Hauterivian section. Biostratigraphic dating is problematic in places because of the absence or rarity of zonal fossils of both Boreal and Tethyan affinity. The majority of nannofossil assemblages are relatively typical of this age, but there are clear differences that set them apart from coeval epicontinental assemblages: for example, Lithraphidites carniolensis is common to abundant throughout and was most likely an oceanic-adapted taxon; the cold- to temperate-water species Crucibiscutum salebrosum, Repagulum parvidentatum, and Seribiscutum primitivum are entirely absent, indicating the persistence of tropical, warm surface water temperatures; and the warm-water species Hayesites irregularis is common. Most striking, however, is the virtual absence of Nannoconus and Micrantholithus, both taxa that were conspicuous and often common components of many Tethyan and Atlantic nannofloras. These forms were almost certainly neritic adapted and usually absent in deep open-ocean settings away from guyots and platforms. Other Tethyan taxa are also absent or rare and sporadically distributed (e.g., Calcicalathina oblongata, Conusphaera spp., Tubodiscus verenae, and Lithraphidites bollii), and factors related to neritic environments presumably controlled their distribution. Site 1213 also records extended Early Cretaceous ranges for species previously thought to have become extinct during the Late Jurassic (e.g., Axopodorhabdus cylindratus, Hexapodorhabdus cuvillieri, and Biscutum dorsetensis), suggesting these species became Pacific-restricted prior to their extinction. Watznaueria britannica may also have been a species with Pacific affinities before reexpansion of its biogeography in the early Aptian. One new genus (Mattiolia) and thirteen new species (Zeugrhabdotus clarus, Zeugrhabdotus petrizzoae, Helicolithus leckiei, Rhagodiscus amplus, Rhagodiscus robustus, Rhagodiscus sageri, Rhagodiscus adinfinitus, Tubodiscus bellii, Tubodiscus frankiae, Gartnerago ponticula, Haqius peltatus, Mattiolia furva, and Kokia stellata) are described from the Shatsky Rise Lower Cretaceous section.

El trabajo se propone revisar algunas vías de recepción de la obra piagetiana en Argentina, principalmente a partir de la figura de un actor clave y representativo de una generación de nuestro país: Aníbal Norberto Ponce. Partimos de la hipótesis que afirma que en Argentina, la obra de la Escuela de Ginebra ha sido recepcionada principalmente con un doble interés convalidante. Por una parte, el de la fundamentación teórica que las hipótesis piagetianas aportaron a la pedagogía nueva; por otra, la referida al rol central e ineludible que las lecturas de la obra adquirieron, a mediados de siglo XX, para pensar una Psicología evolutiva orientada a la infancia. La matriz que definió el experimentalismo positivista a comienzos de siglo XX no fue reemplazada por otra de nuevo cuño, sino que fue la que albergó demanera ecléctica la recepción de las investigaciones psicológicas que contenían la crítica al paradigma de la ?física social. En el cruce entre las concepciones naturalistas de la psicología y la emergencia de paradigmas orientados por el 'sentido' (Foucault, 1957) es donde debemos situar las lecturas tempranas de la obra piagetiana. Las primeras lecturas de Piaget durante la primera mitad del siglo XX muestran una apropiación estructuralista, siendo comprendido, fundamentalmente, desde la dimensión evolutiva de la llamada 'teoría de los estadios'. La figura de Aníbal Ponce (1898-1938), difusor de las ideas de Marx y de Engels en nuestro país y pensador interesado en los problemas de la psicología de su época - psicología sobre la que enseñó y escribió en las décadas de 1920 y 1930-, es un caso paradigmático de los usos que se hacen, en este periodo, de la Escuela de Ginebra. Ponce efectúa una precoz lectura, análisis y transmisión de las tesis de la Psicología Genética a través de sus textos, y difunde este pensamiento en los cursos dictados a docentes en el Instituto Nacional del Profesorado y a un público más amplio en el Colegio Libre de Estudios Superiores. El hecho de que Ponce utilice a Piaget como referencia central para delinear sus cursos para docentes, es elocuente respecto del grupo de problemas al cual se vinculan sus investigaciones. Fiel a la perspectiva de la época, no concibe una práctica de la enseñanza que no se encuentre sustentada en el conocimiento científico de las características del pensamiento infantil, y allí sitúa el interés delas investigaciones ginebrinas. En los trabajos poncianos pueden reconocerse algunas de las interpretaciones más recurrentes de las ideas piagetianas: la de una especie de recapitulación de la filogeniaen la ontogenia -muy a pesar de su explícita oposición al recapitulacionismo-, y la de la caracterización de 'etapas' que describen las habilidades o características infantiles generales, en función de una edad. Esta perspectiva se convertirá, con los años, en un clisé de lectura que tomará las investigaciones piagetianas como una fuente de descripciones generales acerca de lo que puede esperarse o no, en la conducta de un niño de determinada edad. La predominancia de la dimensión estructural de este enfoque, queda evidenciada en el hecho de tomar al estadio como descriptor asociado a una edad, y explicativo por sí mismo, para cualquier tipo de operaciones intelectuales implicadas. En estas breves notas sobre la obra ponciana se encuentran algunas de las líneas de pensamiento predominantes en Argentina y Latinoamérica (Van der Veer, 1997). Partiendo de un modelo que recorre el trayecto que va del egocentrismo a la descentración, se trazan las líneas de una 'psicología de las edades', que presenta a Piaget como el referente de ese pasaje que garantiza todo intercambio social. La lectura estructural y evolutiva sitúa a Piaget entre las figuras de la psicología infantil, leída en clave teleológica, que pretende dar cuenta del pasaje de la irracionalidad primitiva a la racionalidad moderna y adulta. A pesar de los escasos estudios referidos a la psicología ponciana, creemos que es innegable la importancia de este autor para comprender la recepción y transmisión de la obra de Piaget, como antecedente de la Psicología del Desarrollo en Argentina

Late Eocene to Pleistocene planktonic foraminifers from Leg 120 Holes 747A and 749B on the Kerguelen Plateau were quantitatively analyzed. Microperforate tenuitellid forms dominate the Oligocene to middle Miocene, and 17 species (including the new species Tenuitella jamesi and Tenuitellinata selleyi) are recorded. A lineage zonation of tenuitellid foraminifers is proposed as an alternative scheme for refinement of the Oligocene-Miocene biostratigraphy in high latitudes. Progressive or abrupt alterations in morphological characters within this lineage, producing different morphotypes or species, coincided with prolonged or sudden changes in paleoclimate. These microperforate planktonic foraminifers thus appear to have potential as indicators of cold-water masses and temperature fluctuations in post-Eocene oceans.

An almost complete Upper Cretaceous sedimentary sequence recently recovered on the Kerguelen Plateau (southern Indian Ocean) during ODP Leg 183 was analysed for planktonic foraminifera in order to refine and integrate the zonal schemes previously proposed for the Southern Ocean area. Detailed biostratigraphic analysis carried out on holes 1135A, 1136A and 1138A (poleward of 50°S palaeolatitude during Late Cretaceous time) has allowed recognition of low and mid-high latitude bioevents, useful for correlation across latitudes, in addition to known Austral bioevents. The low latitude biozonation can be applied to Turonian sediments, because of the occurrence of Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica, which marks the boundary between Whiteinella archaeocretacea and Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica zones. The base of the Whiteinella archeocretacea Zone falls within the uppermost Cenomanian-Turonian black shale level in Hole 1138A. The stratigraphic interval from upper Turonian to uppermost Santonian can be resolved using bioevents recognized in the mid-high latitude sections. They are, in stratigraphic order: the last occurrence of Falsotruncana maslakovae in the Coniacian, the first occurrence of Heterohelix papula at the Coniacian/Santonian boundary, the extinction of the marginotruncanids in the late Santonian, and the first occurrence of Globigerinelloides impensus in the latest (?) Santonian. The remainder of the Late Cretaceous fits rather well in the Austral zonal scheme, except that Globigerinelloides impensus exhibits a stratigraphic range in agreement with its record at the mid-high latitude sections and extends further downwards than previously recorded at southern sites. Therefore, despite the poor recovery in certain intervals and the presence of several hiatuses of local and regional importance as revealed by correlation among holes, a more detailed zonal scheme has been obtained (mainly for the less resolved Turonian-Santonian interval). Remarks on some species often overlooked in literature are also provided.

Bulk carbonate content, planktic and benthic foraminiferal assemblages, stable isotope compositions of bulk carbonate and Nuttallides truempyi (benthic foraminifera), and non-carbonate mineralogy were examined across ~30 m of carbonate-rich Paleogene sediment at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 259, on Perth Abyssal Plain off Western Australia. Carbonate content, mostly reflecting nannofossil abundance, ranges from 3 to 80% and generally exceeds 50% between 35 and 57 mbsf. A clay-rich horizon with a carbonate content of about 37% occurs between 55.17 and 55.37 mbsf. The carbonate-rich interval spans planktic foraminiferal zones P4c to P6b (~57-52 Ma), with the clay-rich horizon near the base of our Zone P5 (upper)-P6b. Throughout the studied interval, benthic species dominate foraminiferal assemblages, with scarce planktic foraminifera usually of poor preservation and limited species diversity. A prominent Benthic Foraminiferal Extinction Event (BFEE) occurs across the clay-rich horizon, with an influx of large Acarinina immediately above. The delta13C records of bulk carbonate and N. truempyi exhibit trends similar to those observed in upper Paleocene-lower Eocene (~57-52 Ma) sediment from other locations. Two successive decreases in bulk carbonate and N. truempyi delta13C of 0.5 and 1.0? characterize the interval at and immediately above the BFEE. Despite major changes in carbonate content, foraminiferal assemblages and carbon isotopes, the mineralogy of the non-carbonate fraction consistently comprises expanding clay, heulandite (zeolite), quartz, feldspar (sodic or calcic), minor mica, and pyrolusite (MnO2). The uniformity of this mineral assemblage suggests that Site 259 received similar non-carbonate sediment before, during and after pelagic carbonate deposition. The carbonate plug at Site 259 probably represents a drop in the CCD from ~57 to 52-51 Ma, as also recognized at other locations.

Completion of studies on material collected during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 199 at Site 1220 in the equatorial Pacific allows calibration of the ranges of >35 stratigraphically important diatoms to paleomagnetic stratigraphy for the Oligocene and earliest Miocene (~33.5-21.5 Ma). The taxonomy of these taxa is reviewed, and age estimates of their first and last occurrences are compiled. The diatom zonation for the Oligocene and earliest Miocene of the equatorial Pacific is revised and correlated with paleomagnetic stratigraphy. This biostratigraphy is likely to be applicable throughout the low-latitude regions of the world's oceans.

The book is devoted to stratigraphy of Cretaceous deposits from high latitudes of the southern hemisphere (subantarctic part of the ocean), as well as to geological and climatic Cretaceous history of the area. Correlation with Cretaceous sediments from warm water regions is carried out. Description and photos of characteristic species of planktonic and benthic foraminifera and calcispherulides are given.

Stratigraphy of Paleogene deposits from high latitudes of the Pacific region (Koryak Highland, Kamchatka Peninsula, Karaginsky Island - in the northern hemisphere, Australian-Antarctic region - in the southern hemisphere) on planktonic foraminifera are under consideration in the book. Correlation with Paleogene of the warm Pacific belt is given. On the basis of geographic and stratigraphic distributions of planktonic foraminifera climatic zonation and the Paleogene climatic curve are analyzed. Description and photos of 115 species and varieties of planktonic foraminifera are given in the palaeontological part of the book.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 103 recovered Lower Cretaceous sediments from the Galicia margin off the coast of Iberia. The high diversity and abundance of assemblages makes this excellent material for the study of Early Cretaceous calcareous nannofossils. With the exception of a hiatus between the upper Hauterivian and lower Barremian, nannofossil distributions form a continuous composite section from the lower Valanginian to lower Cenomanian sediments recovered at the four sites. The sedimentation history of this rifted continental margin is complex, and careful examination of the nannofossil content and lithology is necessary in order to obtain optimum biostratigraphic resolution. The Lower Cretaceous sequence consists of a lower Valanginian calpionellid marlstone overlain by terrigenous sandstone turbidites deposited in the Valanginian and Hauterivian during initial rifting of this part of the margin. Interbedded calcareous marl and claystone microturbidites overlie the sandstone turbidites. Rifting processes culminated in the late Aptian-early Albian, resulting in the deposition of a calcareous, clastic turbidite sequence. The subsequent deposition of dark carbonaceous claystones (black shales) represents the beginning of seafloor spreading, as the margin continued to subside to depths near or below the CCD. The diversity, abundance, and preservation of nannofossils within these varied lithologies differ, and an attempt to distinguish between near shore and open-marine assemblages is made. Genera used for this purpose include Nannoconus, Micrantholithus, Pickelhaube, and Lithraphidites. In this study, six new species and one new subspecies are described and documented. Ranges of other species are extended, and an attempt is made to clarify existing, yet poorly understood, taxonomic concepts. A technique in which a single specimen is viewed with both light and scanning electron microscopes was used extensively to aid in this task. In addition, further subdivisions of the Sissingh (1977) zonation are suggested in order to increase biostratigraphic resolution.

Isotopic depth stratification and relative abundance studies of planktic foraminifera at ODP Site 738 reveal three major faunal turnovers during the latest Paleocene and early Eocene, reflecting the climatic and structural changes in the Antarctic surface ocean. Faunal Event 1 occurred near the Paleocene/Eocene boundary and is characterized by a faunal turnover in deep dwellers, decreased relative abundance in intermediate dwellers and increased relative abundance in surface dwellers. This event marks a temporary elimination of the vertical structure in the surface ocean over a period of more than 63,000 years that is apparently associated with the sudden shutdown of the "Antarctic Intermediate Water" production. The appearance of morozovellids before this event suggests that polar warming is the cause for the shutdown in the production of this water mass. At this time warm saline deep water may have formed at low latitudes. Faunal Event 2 occurred near the AP5a/AP5b Subzonal boundary and is characterized by a faunal turnover in deep dwellers with no apparent change in surface and intermediate dwellers. Increased individual size, wall-thickness and relative abundance in deep dwelling chiloguembelinids suggests the formation of a deep oxygen minima in the Antarctic Oceans during the maximum polar warming possibly as a result of upwelling of nutrient-rich deep water. Faunal Event 3 occurred in Subzone AP6 and is characterized by a faunal turnover in surface dwellers and a delayed diversification in deep dwellers. This event marks the onset of Antarctic cooling. A drastic decrease in the delta13C/delta18O values of the deep assemblage in Zone AP7 suggests an intensified thermocline and reduced upwelling following the polar cooling.

The equator to high southern latitude sea surface and vertical temperature gradients are reconstructed from oxygen isotope values of planktonic and benthic foraminifers for the following five time intervals: late Paleocene, early Eocene, early middle Eocene, late Eocene, and early Oligocene. Paleotemperatures are calculated using standard oxygen isotope/temperature equations with adjustments to account for (1) variations in sea water delta18O related to changes in global ice volume over time and (2) latitudinal gradients in surface water delta18O. These reconstructions indicate that sea-surface temperatures (SST) of the Southern Oceans in the early Eocene were as high as 15°C, whereas temperatures during the late Paleocene and early middle Eocene reached maximum levels of 10°-12°C. By the late Eocene and early Oligocene high latitude SST had declined to 6 and 4°C, respectively. For most of the early Paleogene, low latitude sub-tropical temperatures remained constant and well within the range of Holocene temperatures (24°-25°C) but by the late Eocene and early Oligocene declined to values in the range of 18° to 22°C. The late Paleogene apparent decline in tropical temperatures, however, might be artificial because of dissolution of near-surface foraminifera tests which biased sediment assemblages toward deeper-dwelling foraminifera. Moreover, according to recent plate reconstructions, it appears that the majority of sites upon which the late Eocene and early Oligocene tropical temperatures were previously established were located either in or near regions likely to have been influenced by upwelling. Global deepwater temperature on average paralleled southern ocean SST for most of the Paleogene. We speculate based on the overall timing and character of marine sea surface temperature variation during the Paleogene that some combination of both higher levels of greenhouse gases and increased heat transport was responsible for the exceptional high-latitude warmth of the early Eocene.

Three sites drilled during Leg 122, Site 761 on the Wombat Plateau and Sites 762 and 763 on the Exmouth Plateau, provide a composite Cretaceous section ranging in age from Berriasian to Maestrichtian. Together, these sites contain an apparently complete, expanded Aptian-Maestrichtian record. Consistently occurring and moderately well-preserved nannofossil assemblages allow reasonably high biostratigraphic resolution. Our data indicate that traditional middle and Upper Cretaceous nannofossil biozonations are not entirely applicable in this region. In this investigation, we compare in detail the relative ranges of key Cretaceous nannofossil markers in the eastern Indian Ocean and in sections from Europe and North Africa. We have determined which previously used events are applicable, and which additional markers have biostratigraphic utility in this region. Significant differences in Campanian-Maestrichtian assemblages exist between the more northern Site 761 and Sites 762 and 763. Such differences are surprising, considering that these sites are only separated by 3° of latitude. We interpret them as marking a strong thermal gradient over the Exmouth Plateau region. Other results include the recovery of an expanded Albian-Cenomanian sequence containing a mixture of Austral and Tethyan floras, which will enable correlation of biozonations established for these two realms; the recovery of two condensed but apparently complete Cenomanian-Turonian boundary sections; correlation of Upper Cretaceous calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy with magneto- and foraminifer stratigraphy; and correlation of portions of the Barrow Group equivalents to the Berriasian and Valanginian stages.
