Latitudinal clines provide natural systems that may allow the effect of natural selection on the genetic variance to be determined. Ten clinal populations of Drosophila serrata collected from the eastern coast of Australia were used to examine clinal patterns in the trait mean and genetic variance of the life-history trait egg-to-adult development time. Development time significantly lengthened from tropical areas to temperate areas. The additive genetic variance for development time in each population was not associated with latitude but was associated with the population mean development time. Additive genetic variance tended to be larger in populations with more extreme development times and appeared to be consistent with allele frequency change. In contrast, the nonadditive genetic variance was not associated with the population mean but was associated with latitude. Levels of nonadditive genetic variance were greatest in the region of the cline where the gradient in the change in mean was greatest, consistent with Barton's (1999) conjecture that the generation of linkage disequilibrium may become an important component of the genetic variance in systems with a spatially varying optimum.

Using a subtractive hybridisation approach, we enriched for genes likely to play a role in embryonic development of the mammalian face and other structures. This was achieved by subtracting cDNA derived from adult mouse liver from that derived from 10.5 dpc mouse embryonic branchial arches 1 and 2. Random sequencing of clones from the resultant library revealed that a high percentage correspond to genes with a previously established role in embryonic development and disease, while 15% represent novel or uncharacterised genes. Whole mount in situ hybridisation analysis of novel genes revealed that approximately 50% have restricted expression during embryonic development. In addition to expression in branchial arches, these genes showed a range of expression domains commonly including neural tube and somites. Notably, all genes analysed were found to be expressed not only in the branchial arches but also in the developing limb buds, providing support for the hypothesis that development of the limbs and face is likely to involve analogous molecular processes. Blepharophimosis ptosis epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) is a human disorder caused by mutations in the forkhead transcription factor gene FOXL2 and is characterized by facial dysmorphology combined in some cases with ovarian failure. To better understand the role of FOXL2 in the etiology of ovarian failure in BPES, we examined its expression in embryonic ovaries of mice, chickens, and red-eared slider turtles, representatives of three phylogenetically distant vertebrate groups that have different mechanisms of sex determination. Expression of Foxl2 was detected in early ovaries of all three species around the time of sex determination and was associated with both somatic and germ cell populations in mice. Expression was sexually dimorphic in all cases. Sequence analysis of turtle and chicken FoxL2 orthologues indicated an unusually high degree of structural conservation during evolution. FoxL2 was found to be autosomal in chickens, and therefore unlikely to represent the dominant ovarian-determining gene that has been postulated to exist as a possible explanation for female heterogamety in birds. Our observations suggest that BPES may result from early abnormalities in regulating the development of the fetal ovary, rather than premature degeneration of the postnatal or adult ovary. Further, our results suggest that FOXL2 is a highly conserved early regulator of vertebrate ovarian development.

A new questionnaire, the Maternal Mental State Input Inventory (MMSII) was created to measure mothers' preferences for introducing and elaborating on mental states in conversation with their young children. In two studies, the questionnaire was given to mothers of young children, and the children's theory of mind (ToM) development was assessed with standard tasks. In both studies, the questionnaire exhibited good internal reliability, and significant correlations emerged between mothers' self-reported preferences for elaborated, explanatory talk about the mental states and children's theory of mind performance. Further, mothers' conversational preferences, as measured by the MMSII, were the best predictors of children's theory of mind development when relevant control variables were included in the analyses. These results converge with naturalistic observational research that has demonstrated links between mothers' conversational styles and their children's theory of mind. They go further in suggesting that mothers' tendencies toward elaborated, explanatory talk about a range of mental states is particularly beneficial to children's theory of mind development. Esta pesquisa de mestrado teve como principal objetivo investigar estratégias de cálculo mental, utilizadas por alunos de uma 5ª série/6º ano do ensino fundamental ao resolver cálculos de adição e subtração. Para atingir este objetivo procuramos responder aos questionamentos: Quais estratégias de cálculo mental, alunos da 5ª série/6º ano empregam na resolução de cálculos de adição e subtração? Que relações existem entre o tipo de cálculo envolvido e a estratégia adotada para resolvê-lo? Para respondermos a essas questões, seguimos uma metodologia de natureza qualitativa, configurada como estudo de caso do tipo etnográfico. O trabalho de campo foi desenvolvido em uma turma de 5ª série/6º ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola pública da rede estadual de ensino do município de Serra. A pesquisa aconteceu de maio a dezembro de 2013. Oito alunos resolveram uma atividade diagnóstica composta de quatro sequências de cálculos mentais, a saber, fatos fundamentais do número 5, do número 10, do número 20 e do número 100, dentre adições e subtrações próximas a esses resultados. Todos alunos participaram da etapa de entrevistas. Dos oito alunos, foram escolhidos dados de três que participaram de outras etapas da pesquisa. Os registros realizados pelos alunos na etapa de observação da turma, na etapa diagnóstica e na etapa de intervenção didática, as anotações no caderno de campo e algumas gravações em áudio serviram como fontes de coleta de dados. Utilizamos as estratégias identificadas por Beishuizen (1997), Klein e Beishuizen (1998), Thompson (1999, 2000) e Lucangeli et al. (2003), como categorias de análise. Através da análise de dados, constatamos que as escolhas das estratégias de cálculo mental pelos alunos variaram de acordo com o tipo de sequência de cálculos, a operação aritmética (adição ou subtração) e o estado emocional deles durante a atividade. Foi possível identificar o uso de duas estratégias combinadas, o algoritmo mental e estratégias de contagens nos dedos para grande parte dos cálculos. O uso do algoritmo mental mostrou-se um procedimento de grande sobrecarga mental e, em alguns cálculos de adição sem reserva, serviu apenas como apoio à visualização numérica, sendo executado pelo aluno da esquerda para a direita, semelhantemente à estratégia de decomposição numérica. Os dados deste estudo apontam para: (i) a necessidade de se trabalhar fatos numéricos fundamentais de adição e subtração via cálculo mental de maneira sistemática em sala de aula; (ii) a necessidade de se ensinar estratégias autênticas de cálculo mental para que os alunos não se tornem dependentes de estratégias como contagens e algoritmo mental, que são mais difíceis de serem executadas com êxito; (iii) a importância de entrevistar, individualmente, os alunos a fim de compreender e avaliar o desenvolvimento destes em tarefas de cálculo mental.

Body and testicular biometric parameters are very important for establishing reproductive patterns and, consequently, the development of protocols for assisted reproduction in different species. A direct correlation between the testis weight and the sperm population was observed in other studied species, because the testis size primarily reflects the total volume of the seminiferous tubule, its main component. The objective of this study was to determine the testicular volume parameters and correlate data from morphometry of testis and seminiferous tubules with body mass in six adult crab-eating foxes. The mean body weight of the crab-eating foxes in this study was 6.53 kg, with approximately 0.068% allocated to the testicular mass and 0.042% specifically to seminiferous tubules, which represented 87.5% of the testicular parenchyma. The albuginea comprised 12.5% of the testicular mass. The mean diameter of seminiferous tubules was 236 µm, and the mean thickness of the seminiferous epithelium was 62.9 µm. Values of tubular parameters indicate a sperm productivity close to those observed in previously studied carnivores.

This study aims to be a contribution to a theoretical model that explains the effectiveness of the learning and decision-making processes by means of a feedback and mental models perspective. With appropriate mental models, managers should be able to improve their capacity to deal with dynamically complex contexts, in order to achieve long-term success. We present a set of hypotheses about the influence of feedback information and systems thinking facilitation on mental models and management performance. We explore, under controlled conditions, the role of mental models in terms of structure and behaviour. A test based on a simulation experiment with a system dynamics model was performed. Three out of the four hypotheses were confirmed. Causal diagramming positively influences mental model structure similarity, mental model structure similarity positively influences mental model behaviour similarity, and mental model behaviour similarity positively influences the quality of the decision.

A study of adult Culicidae ecology was carried out from January 1992 through January 1993 at the rice irrigation system of the Ribeira Valley Experimental Station. The adaptation of Anopheles albitarsis to the anthropic environment became evident through the adult collections made at its various habitats represented by the irrigation system and the edge of the residual pond, as well as at those made within the local patchy residual woods. Other potential disease vectors were prevalent in the irrigated system too. There were Aedes scapularis, Culex nigripalpus and Cx. ribeirensis that were collected at various habitats. Remarkable differences among their prevalences were obtained such as between the natural forest and anthropic environments. In the former An. albitarsis was practically non-existent, thus suggesting that it might be considered as eusynathropic. As the populations of other species seemed to increase in the anthropic environment, they may be regarded as hemisynanthropes. Observations suggest the hypothesis that the development of irrigated land may be a factor in the emergence of An. albitarsis, and some other species, as well as the possibility of an increase in the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria.

Aedes albopictus were reared in different containers: a tree hole, a bamboo stump and an auto tire. The total times from egg hatching to adult emergence were of 19.6,27.3 and 37.5 days, respectively, according to the container. The first, second and third-instar larvae presented growth periods with highly similar durations. The fourth-instar larvae was longer than the others stages. The pupation time was longer than the fourth-instar larvae growth period. The temperature of the breeding sites studied, which was of 18° C to 22° C on average, was also taken into consideration. The mortality of the immature stages was analysed and compared as between the experimental groups; it was lower in the natural containers than in the discarded tire. The average wing length of adult females emerging from tree hole was significantly larger (p < 0.05) than that of those emerging from the tire.

Despite a massive expansion of education in Portugal, since the 1970’s, educational attainment of the adult population in the country remains low. The numbers of working-age people in some form of continuing education are among the lowest, according to the OECD and EU-27 statistics. Technological Schools(TS), initially created in the 1990’s, under the umbrella of the Ministry of Economy in partnership with industry and industrial associations, aimed to prepare qualified staff for industries and services in the country, particularly in the engineering sector, through the provision of post secondary non-university programmes of studies, the CET (Technological Specialization Courses). Successful CET students are awarded a DET(Diploma of Technological Specialization), which corresponds to Vocational Qualification level IV of the EU, according to the latest alteration (2005) of the Education Systems Act (introduced in 1986). In this, CET’s are also clearly defined as one of the routes for access to Higher Education (HE), in Portugal. The PRILHE (Promoting Reflective and Independent Learning in Higher Education) multinational project, funded by the European Socrates Grundtvig Programme, aimed to identify the learning processes which enable adult students in higher education to become autonomous reflective learners and search best practices to support these learning processes. During this research, both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to determine how students organise their studies and develop their learning skills. The Portuguese partner in the project’ consortium used a two case studies approach, one with students of Higher Education Institutions and other with students of TS. This paper only applies to students of TS, as these have a predominant bias towards engineering. Results show that student motivation and professional teaching support contribute equally to the development of an autonomous and reflective approach to learning in adult students; this is essential for success in a knowledge economy, where lifelong learning is the key to continuous employment.

A mitose é o evento celular, através do qual uma células transmite uma cópias do seu DNA às células filhas. Este processo é mediado pelo fuso mitótico, o qual consiste numa rede bipolar microtubulos. A dinâmica dos microtubulos é regulada por proteínas associadas a estes (MAPs – Microtubule-Associated Proteins), tais como as proteínas associadas às extremidades positivas dos microtubulos (+TIPs – Plus-ends Tracking proteins). As proteínas associadas às CLIPs (CLASPs – CLIP-associated proteins) pertencem a esta família e estão altamente conservadas nos eucariotas. Estas interagem com os microtubulos regulando o fuso mitótico, a segregação dos cromossomas e o comportamento dos microtubulos ao nível do cinetocoro. Assim, as CLASPs têm sido descritas como essenciais à manutenção da integridade genética durante a divisão celular. Um modelo animal knockout para o gene Clasp1 é uma ferramenta indispensável à descoberta do papel da CLASP1 a nível fisiológico. Nos animais knockout foi observado um fenótipo letal, no qual 100% dos recém-nascidos morreram poucos minutos após o nascimento, no decurso de falência respiratória. Após análise histopatológica, observamos que os pulmões dos animais knockout apresentam um atraso no desenvolvimento. Porém, a análise da expressão de marcadores de diferenciação celular, mostrou que os pneumócitos tipo I e II estão presente e diferenciados nos animais knockout aquando do seu nascimento. No entanto, um defeito primário a nível pulmonar ainda não pode ser excluído. Níveis elevados de glicogénio no parênquima alveolar dos animais knockout sugerem imaturidade pulmonar ou deficiente produção do líquido surfactante. Adicionalmente, ainda não está esclarecido de que forma pode este atraso explicar a letalidade observada nos recémnascidos knockout. Verificamos também que expressão de CLASP1 é transiente ao longo do desenvolvimento, sendo particularmente elevada no cérebro, o que pode explicar o seu papel já descrito na biologia dos neurónios. A CLASP1 é ubiquamente expressa em mamíferos adultos, o que sugere que esta proteína é também importante em tecidos diferenciados. Nesta fase, o significado biológico da CLASP1 em mamíferos ainda não foi descortinado. No entanto, nenhum animal knockout para Clasp1 foi capaz de sobreviver ex uterus, o que sugere um papel fundamental desta proteína na fase final do desenvolvimento dos mamíferos.
